Super encouraging! Thanks. Feeling so limited sometimes and your advice is just what I needed.
I've been shooting the same way. Most shots it's practicals, an added light where needed, and a cube light. Works great.
I love how this video inspires us to shoot, it just simplifies alot the process and makes you want to film something.
These were really helpful and practical lighting tips, thank you!
awesome video Zach!
You are so amazing bro. So inspiring, insightful and creative. I really enjoy your videos so much. Keep up the good work 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much! I’m stoked they can inspire
Beautiful work
This was very helpful man thank you! I can’t tell you how much stress your videos take away for my upcoming Production 1 short film for college less than 2 months away
Awww man, that’s the best thing I could read!! thank you so much!!! I’m so happy this could help
perfection is the enemy to completion, love that.
"Getting the A24 Look in 3 min"
Video Length: 19 min.
Love this, I am needing more info on lighting for sure and I'll check out the lights too, I love that they are magnetic.
They are really fantastic! Highly recommend
awesome! and great voice Jackie!
Love this, your videos are so informative.
Great video bro …. I love your style of film making
Solid! Thanks for making this!
Awesome video Zach, thanks.
Awesome video and quite insightful on how to optimize resourcefulness. Bless up
Beatiful work... Love the minimalistic approach, very inspiring.
Yes you don’t need overwhelming set ups
Another good thing to use as far as a huge BLACK Background... is Weed Carpet/material (I don't think this is the right name)...
but what you would use to put down on the ground to keep the weeds from growing...
it is Light and Cheap.
Nice moods you created with those little lights! 🔥
They are fantastic! Highly recommended
Wonderful job y'all. 👍🏽
why not shoot at your base ISO, and then add grain in post? Film crews do everything they can to maximize dynamic range, and then get the look they want in post. You could've shot it at 800, or you could've shot at 12800 and then ND'd back down to the exposure you wanted.
@@Studio_234 you misunderstand…. If you wanna shoot something dark, you can stop down to t4 while you do your lighting, and then right before you shoot, you pull back out to t/2 (or you use nd, or monitor with a -2 lut, doesn’t matter). If you want to create dark imagery, more dramatic lighting, that’s great. Compose your shot that way, but shoot it in a way that keeps your shadow detail above the noise floor. Then you can at least preserve that shadow detail if you want to.
That’s very different than shooting everything like a sitcom and relighting the film in post, or shooting on a green screen.
@@colemoweryI don’t think he understands how to ETTR to reduce noise in post. And I also think he doesn’t understand just how much is done with VFX and color and everything else in post to make the “normal “ looking images we see in most movies these days.
We need clean images as professionals, even shooting on film you want as little noise as possible.
I love your work you’re a genius
Fair point! I’ll keep this in mind
Because in guerilla filming you don't have a crew and the option have adding a bunch of lights
Zach: Let's figure out how to get the absolute most bang for your buck.
Negative Phil: It'll never work.
Bhahahahahahahahahaha my favourite comment yet!
Negative Phil: no it’s not
Negative Phil strikes again
Dude! You need to make a music video with Jackie singing if you haven’t done that yet.
Excellent as always man...
Thank you!!
Awesome video!
the chemistry is 🥰
hahaha "negative phill" - great video man, thanks
I learned a lot from this video, thanks
wow you are a genius
Another awesome tip video:).
"BRAVO Darling(s) BRAVO
Of all of your videos Zach...
THIS Video (so far) is the BEST...
You have touched a piece of my soul...
You are touching a lot of people's soul.
Thank you and your Crew for all that you do.
Looks awesome! The only note I’d make is with the medium and close up of the first set up in the basement. I think adding a bounce board underneath her could bring some fill for her eyes, or add a second dimmed mc light for an eye light since we miss a lot of the emotion by not seeing her eyes at all. Awesome work and thank you for making solo shoots feel more accessible and achievable 🫶🏻
03:21 these soft compression artifacts 🤩🤩
you da man
I love your camera gear, any guid on how to build that?
@14:12 this confirms your next short has to be a scene from les mis
What handle do you have on the DJI gimbal! I've been looking for one just like that to hold my monitor the exact way you are without needing to balance it on the camera itself which makes it look quite goofy.
These were the longest 3 minutes of my life
I prefer a flat sheet for neg fill instead of fitted but it gives a bit more NEON vibe
Good video 👍
You used the FX3 but whats your opinion on the FX30 ? also good to achieve similiar things or is the APSC Sensor realy not that good in lower light situations?
Many thanks! :) What is the diffuser ?
great footage
you say you are shooting on the Sony FX3 in the video, but your gear below shows the Sony A7 iii as the main camera
Name a more iconic duo than Zach and Jackie 💪
Oh my god, Jacquie and I love this! Printing and putting it on our biceps as a connecting tattoo.
Where was the red jumpsuit movie shot? It looks amazing!
Hamilton Ontario!
Did I miss a link to your Ronin? Looks like a DJI Ronin SC but with an add-on for the LED monitor?
What is that gimbal you are using?
2:12 Very cheeky swearing but tucked away under the silence ;)
Where did you get that light stand for the small light?
man, you are dope!
You’re dope!
haha and in your first shot you have like two stands to try and stretch the black fitted sheet, a c stand for the diffusion..., and you say not putting up so much stands and focusing on story... but in your favor, i really appreciate seeing how to do lighting as a solo operator... but still seems like you still need like 5 stands or more as a solo operator... to mount diffusion, bounce, neg, flag, etc... regardless of the size of the light...
I feel like they set a bit more different in vibes, if we were going with a more sad or depressed vibe and wanted the Molus light, probably shouldve toned it down a bit. I thinks its a tad bit too warm.
....why did you buy fitted sheets if you were just going to tear out the elastic? Why not just get flat sheets?
Haha, they were at a bargain store for super cheap! I also didn’t know they were fitted lol
You're doing great!!! Love your projects. If you have a chance to visit China, I'll be glad to cooperate with you!
what diffusion flag is that?
Stories do be needing to be told 😂
Affiliate link that white diffusion!
Sure, small LED as a top light 100% looks like Dune. Greg Fraser is propably scratching his head how you've managed to do that.
a e s t h e t i c
The Amazon link for the small led isnt 😮working
It's good but she needs a bit of eye light
Sooooo goooooood!!! Can we be friends?!!! Geeezus!!
We’re friends!
Ouh, such noisy image from fx3 ... actually in the lights, not in the darks. How is that?
I disagree and would say you can't use a small light like this unless youre using a camera where you can crank the iso. This wouldn't give you enough output if you were shooting on an Alexa mini or a red and didn't want your image to fall apart.
It's weird to say the "A24 look" when A24 is primarily a distributor and doesnt "make" those movies. EEEAaO which you showed at the start for example was just distributed by them. The "look" belongs to the actual directors and team.
It's kind of crazy that you show the movie name and below it only attribute A24, who for most of these movies does nothing.
thats what i'm saying. these idiotic "filmmakers" really think this is a thing. Karsten does this same shit. so ignorant... makes them look very uneducated...
Studios do not establish lighting and cinematic looks of a golem the director and cinematographer do and every project is different. If you see a similarity it’s by accident not design. No director or cinematographer would allow this.
yeah, my biggest gripe with such content is that people spin this narrative of a "studio look". FFS, this ain't Marvel, these are completely different movies shot by different crews, DOPs, directors...
wheres link for backstage guy
Just added Matt’s info!
A gentleman and a scholar🙏
If you think a24 is about the way they look then you're not watching a 24 movies. Also, they don't have an established look. They typically look exactly how they should when it comes to their plot/story/location.
There is no one "A24 look", each film is conceived, directed and photographed in totally different conditions; countries, scripts, lighting style, camera angles, locations, color correction. It's a pretentious as sayin "learn how to paint as an impressionist in 3 min".
I know right, it's pretty demeaning.
I don’t know but I like more the BTS than your final results, maybe you have to switch to the BTS camera, looks more sensitive to light
Get the A24 look in 3 minutes. 20 Minute video.
jesus i hate when people say this. its like saying all magnolia movies have a certain look... or neon. or to even make your point even sillier, expand it to a major studio. doesn't work.
The concept of an A24 look is such bullshit. They just happen to work with filmmakers who have a strong visual style.
Midsommar, The Lighthouse, Past Lives, Good Time, Talk to Me, Ex Machina, are all A24 movies and they couldnt look more different from each other.
Shooting for coverage is the mark of a director who has no point view.
Bro looks like bargain bin Wolverine 😂
the vid is 19 mins
A24 look does not exist
Just a way to get clicks
THANK YOU! It’s literally just people doing what they do
It’s not A24 bro, it’s the directors and the cinematographers. It’s so annoying how big of a pedestal A24 has been put on. They put out great movies, but they aren’t behind the fucking camera..
Fair point! A24 like any company is the make up of their talent. That said, their films all have style, which is something many major companies are lacking
@@ZachRamelan green knight looks totally different to talk to me which looks totally different to hereditary which looks totally different to the witch which looks totally different to the lighthouse which looks totally different to Midsommar - they have completely different visions behind the camera, different aesthetics, lighting, cameras, lenses - I mean the list is endless! The only thing uniting them is A24 - they are all very unique, individual visions in my opinion, even amongst the same directors
3 mins😂
How can A24 have a look XD it's a company
Haha, it’s the easiest way to say stylish cinematography that fits in a title lol
@@ZachRamelan I do forget at times, UA-cam want short and sweet Titles to cater toward people with Tik Tok short attention spin custard Brains! XD
I don't get it, you're showing different movies with different looks, there's no distinct "style" or LOOK of A24, a lot of mainstream movies or Netflix movies look exactly like that. The only suggestion in that case would be to shoot on set as close as possible to what you want to see in the end. It's not only lighting, it's the art department, stylists etc. There's not such thing as CINEMATIC look, ffs. It's a myth. Basic color-corrected film scan can be cinematic, Alexa footage can be cinematic, hell, take any Wes Anderson movie - is it not cinematic because it looks different? Also... The problem is that all the YT "cinematographers" forget one very important factor - TEXTURE. Why are you afraid to go all in with style? Film blur, bloom, grain, proper low key with very low black levels, color density. Okay, the grain is there, but it doesn't look like it belongs, because the image is too sharp. All the shot footage looks like a YT short film because of that, I'm sorry.
LOVE YOUR WORK....but the title of this video is laughable. Get it in 3 minutes lol. it could take forever to set up those lights and flags that you set up for that basement scene. BADASSS by the way, but not in 3 minutes
Lol A24 style. A24 is a production comp. Just credit the director of Photographers man if you like their look it has nothing to do with A24...
Come ON man! Title says 3 minutes. Video should've been 3 minutes long too! Or at least 1st wrap around 3 minutes chapter and then deep dive if want to rant so desperately
Interesting point! I’ll be sure to incorporate something like that in the next vid! Thanks for the idea
Heaven forbid you come up with your own look?
“…in 3 mins.” Makes a 20 min video 😂
Dude also doesn’t understand the meaning of aesthetic. Uses it like a schoolgirl on instagram
What the fuck is the A24 look? Jesus these “trendy” videos are getting out of control
there is no a24 look... this is a fallacy perpetuated by lazy student filmmakers who have decent equipment and no story
