0:00 Tesla Wireless Charging Platform
2:37 Sponsor (Brilliant)
3:43 FreePower Wireless Charging Technology
The new Tesla Wireless Charging Platform is inspired by Cybertruck’s angular design and metallic styling, providing 15W of fast charging power per device for up to 3 devices simultaneously. It features an aluminum housing, and the charging surface is composed of soft alcantara. It comes with an integrated USB-C cable, a 65W USB-C power adapter, and a detachable magnetic stand that allows you to use the charging pad at an angle for better viewing. It’s engineered with next-generation FreePower wireless charging technology, which charges any Qi-capable device but the main difference is the device can be placed anywhere on the surface without precise alignment. Standard chargers with Qi wireless charging rely on magnetic resonance to transfer energy, which means that the charging pad and device's receiver coil need to be close to each other, usually within a few millimeters, for the transfer of energy to occur. However, FreePower allows freedom of placement. Place your devices anywhere on the charging pad without worrying about it not charging, and charge multiple devices simultaneously with precise power delivery up to 15W per device. The surface activates combinations of 1, 2, or 3 coils based on the location of a device’s receiver, delivering high-efficiency, high-quality charging experiences. FreePower is on a mission to bring this type of wireless charging capability not just to wireless charging pads but to nearly all surfaces that one might encounter in a typical day such as desks, counters, tables, and of course in vehicles. My 2018 Tesla Model 3 does not have any wireless charging, but beginning in 2020 all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles come equipped with wireless charging on the center console for up to two smartphones. Although there's no confirmation of this happening, it is my own educated guess that the next logical step is for Tesla to include the same FreePower wireless charging technology that is in this new Wireless Charging Pad in their vehicles going forward. Having said that, it is more difficult to change and implement new technology like this in vehicles due to the more complex production process, but a bold prediction of mine is that Tesla will add this to their vehicle interiors beginning with the Cybertruck. This type of tech is great for cars because if a phone slides around on the pad it won’t stop the charging or if you’re trying to keep your eyes on the road and decide to quickly place your phone on the charger you don’t have to worry about placing it in a specific spot, thus increasing safety if only slightly, which is enough justification for Tesla because they’ve always said safety is their number one priority. Hopefully someday we’ll see wireless charging for electric vehicles, but no matter if or when that happens, the cool thing is we have amazing technologies like FreePower pushing the boundaries of what wireless charging can be today for all the other devices in our lives.

Nice haircut Andy
I thought it was about a wireless car charger. That might be worth buying.
Wireless car charging might be an interesting concept, but the waste of energy in the magnetic coupling kinda defeats the purpose of economy. Perhaps if the coil could rise from he floor and come in very close contact with the coil in the car, creating sort of an armature to enhance magnetic coupling, you're gonna waste a lot of energy.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why the 5 second procedure of open port - plug in charging cable is so disturbing to people. Even backing in to a Supercharger takes what - 30, 45 seconds? I've got other things to worry about.
@@The_DuMont_Network I used to feel the same way, until I had an iPhone who's lighting port starting messing up and wouldn't charge through it. If that phone also have wireless charging, that would have allowed me to keep the phone longer. Besides port failures cords also break, when you least expect it.
@@The_DuMont_Network I think its more about autonomous driving. When having a ride share service, you need the cars to be able to charge autonomously. Tesla could have charging stations dedicated to fleet charging, with inductive charging in parking spots. Number the spots, car knows which spot and the schedule of cars from the fleet are using that spot. Then off it goes back to ride sharing... thats my opinion on the next logical steps...
For everyone wondering how this is remotely impressive, keep in mind, creating a charging pad that can give charge wherever you place it and charge at a decent rate isn’t easy. In fact it’s so difficult, Apple’s finest attempted to make one, even announced it as an official product, but cancelled it due to engineering issues, mainly with it overheating in order to give it an adequate charge rate. Yes all in one pads exist, but they’re almost always inconveniently big, clunky, and have abysmal charging rates.
Good point!
The irony of this is, their charging plates in the cars are the absolute worst…
When I clicked on this, I thought it was wireless charging for the car itself 😅.
The newer cars already have wireless charging for your phone.
I think perhaps we were _meant_ to think that.
what about wireless charging for the car itself ?
my 2021 Model Y charger doesn't work -- can this fit into the place of a Model Y?
1:37 Not even MagSafe stands? Not the flat puck on a cord, but like 3 in 1 stands with MagSafe. I never looked back after getting a few
Unfortunately my 2022 Model 3 has wireless but won't charge my iPhone 12 Pro Max with the MagaSafe case on 🙁 So I curious if this new Tesla wireless pad charger solves that issue?
Do you mean that your phone with the case on is too big to fit in the slot to charge? Because it should work with the MagSafe case on. I put a Jada wireless charging pad in my 2018 Model 3 and my iPhone 13 Mini with an Apple leather MagSafe case charges just fine on it. The pad has magnets in it like the case, so it lines right up.
My model 3 does charge with the Apple qi case on it… but placement is finicky … when adjusted after a few seconds it’s stays and charges in place
@@Resist4 I stand corrected, it does work, just a little slow in connecting.
@@try_always I stand corrected, it does work, just a little slow in connecting.
@@try_always And that's another drawback to the wireless charging pads, well, other than this new one from Tesla. Let's hope it eventually makes it into their vehicles.
Is Freepower a seperate company? I can not see anything about Tesla on their website.....?
If only you could remove the cable from the charger so that if it breaks you can swap it with another one
That’s what Apple tried to do when they attempted to make one, but it ended up failing. There must be engineering complications with designing it that way.
Having a removable cable would make it easier for the port to fail sooner than a non removable cable.
For $300 its a no go for me. I would love it if we could get this retro-fitted in the M3
It will cost more than $300 to have it retro fitted in the Model 3.
Anyone know if you can still refer people for free supercharger miles
I can’t believe you’re hyping this thing up like it’s something revolutionary. There is literally nothing novel about this besides the aesthetics.
Lol 😅
Such a misleading video title for such an ordinary product.
Y’all must not know anything about wireless charging pads then. “Nothing novel” yet you can’t mention one single three in one wireless pad. Why? Because they barely exist. It’s surprisingly difficult to engineer a single flat pad that can wirelessly charge wherever the device is placed. It’s so difficult, Apple was slated to release one but ended up cancelling it due to engineering flaws. There ARE single pads out there that can do this to a degree, but they sacrifice power in order to not overheat, which is why Apple cancelled their, it wouldn’t charge fast enough. It’s called tech appreciation, not fanboying, and not remotely misleading considering there isn’t any other charging pad that can this what it does that effectively. And even if it wasn’t all that cool, who tf cares, it’s his channel, he gets to post stuff that interests him. And here he is making a successful career off UA-cam as a result while you’re stuck in the comments wasting your life away.

300 damn dollars!! I jumped back in my seat, but I shouldn't be surprised because its Tesla Merch LMFAO. Not even Apple would dare!
Hoping this would be implemented into future Teslas.. who knows maybe this would be in the CyberTruck
The current 3/Y wireless chargers don't fit "pro" size phones with an OtterBox on them - one of the very few (very small) gripes I have with the vehicle
yea i have the 13 pro max and it doesnt charge in the 3's wireless charger which is annoying. i wish you could install a new one or something like this in its place
12 pro max doesn’t fit 3’s wireless charger
I bought one from a third-party way back when I first got the M3. Fits two phones and my big ass note 20 ultra with its big cover only fits sideways
I read somewhere that it only supports up to 7.5w for iPhones and 15w for androids. Maybe the charging speed would increase with future software updates.
2nd, the cable isn't replaceable and it's not even braided, so if anything happens to the cable then you'll probably have to replace the whole thing.
3rd, the detachable magnetic stand seems to be a waste of material. The stand could've been integrated into the charging pad itself. Some computer keyboards have those tiny legs on the bottom that could be deployed to raise the angle of the keyboard. But I guess that wouldn't seem as premium.
4th, if it can also charge the Apple Watch then it would be more appealing. But I guess it would be up to apple to make their watches qi compatible.
The 7.5W power for iPhones is a restriction placed by Apple. They only let their magsafe chargers operate at higher power, up to 14W.
So all other Qi chargers will be the same for iPhones.
My 2023 MY comes standard with this and it works flawlessly. No need to spend $300 for my house, I’ll use my wired ones
do you have to plug the charger in? I see a cord extending from the charger.
Of course you have to plug the charger in. How else would it get power to charge the devices? lol
@@Resist4 I thought it could be a solar power battery charger. Nothing wrong with it ask you something I just assumed that he would have tried having solar power for a battery charger.

Did you try this device yourself?
Yes it works great so far
@@aslye Did you pay for it or did they give it to you free?
We're talking once we actually get to wirelessly charge the Tesla themselves - while mobile...you know, via something like I don't know, the SUN????
Why would a charger need firmware updates?
Hi Andy, is that charging mat compatible with the apple watch? If so that would be super useful in our family where we have 3 of them. Thanks!
No
I thought it was the new CAR wireless charger we saw on investor day! This is nothing new.
Lol I thought it was a wireless Tesla charger for the car itself 😂
The Model 3 also had alcantara too. This is an interesting product but boy is it expensive at $300.
This is not new. Free power has been around for a few years. Brands like nomad have been using it in their base station. Oddly they no longer offer the version with free power. Licensing end? Not sure.
My 2023 M3P's (alleged) 15W Qi charging pad seems to only charge at about 5W, which feels glacially slow compared to its much faster 15W USB-C outlets.
😞
PS - I have a Samsung S22+, and it usually feels quite warm after even a short charge on the wireless charging pad.
Anyone have better Qi charging results?
At this point all wireless charging is slower than wired, they are just not as efficient. But that might be changing soon.
Plus, wired charging doesn't heat up the battery as much as wireless. For the 2 seconds it takes me to plug in a cable, worth saving my battery life.
@@mowcowbell And yet wireless charging never wears out a port or causes a cable to fray.
@@Resist4 And yet I've never had a port wear out or a frayed cable.
@@mowcowbell I have, numerous times. But I have always kept my phones for a long time. I've had the lightning port on two iPhones that stopped charging the phones and 2 earbud cords short out due to fraying and the power brick to a MacBook Pro cord fray out and fail. You are lucky you haven't experienced it because it's pretty common, these things don't last forever. I do know that if my previous iPhone had the wireless charging ability, I'd still be using it because I had to upgrade to a new phone because I couldn't charge it anymore.
Meanwhile the wireless charger in the model 3 isn’t compatible with the iPhone 13/14
I thought this wireless charging was going to be for Tesla vehicles. 😛
Exactly - me too!! Haha I were definitely not alone in thinking this! Who cares about wirelessly charging anything else non-Tesla related?? 😆😆
I see tesla more than a car company
And Tesla stock keep dropping like a rock at every turn.
I called the wireless charging for the cars over a year ago 🥳
Thank you for the discount with Brilliant. I’ve been looking at them for a while but was unsure, so now I can try it and see if it’s worth it for me.
I have to agree with others. This is unimpressive. I just don't get this for the average consumer. It's expensive, bulky and lacks portability. I'd have to buy too many to feel the needed benefit. It reminds me a cellphone "bag" from before. I can see the funny cartoon now: user unpacks this from their carryon bag to charge their ipad, ear buds, and phone on the plane. Flight attendant says, you'll need to stow that; Meanwhile, other passengers are simply using their portable power bricks. Hard pass!
It will appeal to those that love new tech. If you don't understand the engineering, then yeah it's not impressive to you.
@@Resist4 I guess I misunderstood. Thanks for education. I don't know what I would have done without the insight. I'm impressed now.
@@derickdevindavis You're welcome, I enjoy helping the uneducated.
Tesla’s current wireless charging in Y is very disappointing.
It was their first time doing it. As Andy said this tech could make it into their cars.
I thought this was about wireless car charging. Disappointing.
We discuss actual wireless car charging toward the end of the video 👍
I said this years ago and people were having non of it. As EVs get cheaper and more people not in gated communities need places to charge you cant have 100 dollar copper cables swinging in the wind unattended. People break into cars for a phone chargers. Either make the charging cable out of something worthless or do wireless charging.
15W is still weak as shit compared to cable.
So basically it is if Tesla made AirPower. Got it.
We don't need to solve for the Z in the XY equation as roads and the bottoms of cars can easily be made to work within the current close proximity Z axis.
How does the BEV charging ecosystem change when roads can charge cars in motion. This has already been demonstrated, all we are waiting on is for implementation and economy of scale to drive down costs. A good place to start would be the slow lanes of up hill grades.
Try refueling your gas car while driving it. I can guarantee we will have in motion inductive charging within a few decades and it will be ubiquitous shortly after on all interstates and many freeways and state routes.
This will completely eliminating the need to DCFC during road trips. Charging at home might remain easier and cheaper to still just use a j1772 EVSE.😊
As I have stated previously, the coupling losses are simply too great. Why waste that much power, and who the Hell is going to pay for that rolling charge in motion hardware? Thanks, I will stick with stopping and plugging in, and taking a leak and a break for 10-15 minutes every 250-300 miles.

So Tesla solved the problem that Apple could not😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Apple should be offering their model this year in white🤣🤣🤣
I really want one of these Tesla phone chargers...but...I use an Apple iPhone. What the Tesla website doesn't tell you is in regards to iPhones with Magsafe. Magsafe is a different charging standard than the Qi standard. Non-MagSafe devices that wirelessly charge using the Qi charging standard can take advantage of the fast 15w charging with this Tesla charger. Magsafe iPhones can only get 15w charging speeds with a Magsafe wireless charger (not this Tesla charger that uses the Qi standard). All is not lost though...Apple has built-in the Qi wireless charging standard on every iPhone, so you can definitely charge an iPhone on this Tesla charger...but...you're only going to get about 7.5w speeds, not the full 15w. Also...Apple Watch won't charge on this Tesla charger either. 😢 So when you look at it like that, you're paying $300 for a slower wireless charger (if you have an iPhone). For $40 at the Apple store, you can get a MagSafe charger for faster charging. I still want this Tesla charger though...lol. #teslafanboy

Come on man, a qi wireless charger for 300 bucks? Sure it has more coils, which by the way also means that this ridiculous gadget bleeds power like a firehose, a typical American energy wasting 'solution'. Ridiculous e waste.
A lot of people have phones that cost $300
Yea, I tried out a €5 wireless Qi charger from ikea. Still thinking it was unworth. Worked quite good, but after a few months and the third time I woke up with a dead phone I just threw it in the drawer. I don’t see why you would need this.
@@ashyouknow7420 and no one has a $300 charger to charge that $300 phone 🤣

@@Resist4 The word Tesla is synonymous with car in many contexts, and the comment was light-hearted so I'm sorry your emotions got dragged into a reply. Also, the word "WIRELESS" is right over top of Andy's car in the thumbnail. Using the words "phone-charger" would've been more concise and likely saved you and I a few seconds, but no worries on this end.
You don't address its efficiency with an actual figure! It is so low it's a joke and by the laws of physics it will remain so. Little said of value here.
I bought a wireless charging capable phone because I work in a dusty environment and the charge port always broke after 2-3 years, so I plugged it up and almost exclusively use wireless charging. I find it great that my Model 3 supports it.
But asking 300$ for a wireless charger is horribly overpriced, maybe 150$ would be more reasonable while still on the high side, but let's be real, you can get wireless chargers for 15-20$ that do the same, they stand up you drop your phone on there and they charge, do I care that I can move the phone anywhere on this pad and it still charges? No, not so much as to spend that kind of money.
The wireless charger in my M3 sucks so I won't buy this one.

Did you even watch the video? Most wireless charging pads only have a couple coils, so the phone has to be positioned correctly. This pad has 30 coils, so a device can be positioned in any way on the pad.
