Got Your 6 Storytellers showcases the exemplary talents of some of our country's most innovative military veterans and how they're impacting their communities.
Jason Everman squandered the early part of his youth playing in rock bands and commercial fishing in Alaska. He is a veteran of OIF/OEF, and has served in both Ranger Regiment and Special Forces. Jason recently graduated from Columbia University with a BA in philosophy, and is currently eyeing post-graduate programs in military history.

Thanks to Jason for paying the $600 to record Nirvana's Bleach album. He got the ball rolling, in his own small way.

He played in three awesome bands: Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mind Funk. He financed Nirvana's first album and paid for the tour shirts so they could make a little money on the road. He's the predominant guitarist on the cover of Bleach. He shared the stage with Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Kim Thayill, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Dubar at various moments. He's Jason Everman.

Im commenting using my wife's sign on email because I don't normally comment on social media. Anyhow, got to meet Jason Everman in Kuwait as we were ramping up for the invasion.. Turns out we were co located in the same building and I discovered his presence purely by accident. Got to hear a first hand account of Kurt writing my fav Nirvana song (About a Girl) from Jason. Sadly, I left country a couple days later. Without a doubt, the most surreal memory I have in my 20 year military career and definitely the coolest.... Jason, glad you made it through the war (so did I)..... Wish you the best in future endeavors. It was really awesome to meet you.....

Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden was going there at the same time and was already a talented punk rock musician. I don't think you read between the lines, and it was too short to articulate his experiences and why they were noteworthy spiritually. how he wasn't happy, and needed to fill holes in his soul. He found this sense of purpose and brotherhood in the military with his brothers, learned more about himself through those experiences than living a normal life. IT's hard to understand that unless you've been through it. So it makes sense you wouldn't understand, not to offend you just saying.
Ever have some experience or been searching for some experience that was so life changing and deep that you thank god you were blessed to have experienced it? but somehow cannot put into words what this greatness is? thats what he was trying to get across i think.

For work I tried something else at first but felt like him unaccomplished and always searching. Now I’m a music teacher and performer. I always loved the music, but the discipline and order changed everything back in the drum corps days.

Even though he never recorded with Nirvana, the world might've never gotten Nirvana at the level that we did if it weren't for Everman since he's the one that paid the sub pop fee to release the Bleach.

Here is a man from my generation that is to be respected. A degree in Philosophy from an Ivy League school, a musician that played in impressive bands, and a Special Forces veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq. He presents himself as modest and intellectual, unlike Ted Nugent, a loud mouth, sexist, draft-avoiding coward. Real men don't write songs about abusing women and gun-hugging. Real men use guns when needed, then put them away afterwards. This man is an inspiration, Ted is a dangerous joke, that does not deserve respect for anything about his life. Here is a truly impressive American Gen-Xer.

    • @DeadlyRamon
      @DeadlyRamon 7 років тому +27

Ted Nugent (hardly a Gen-Xer) did save the life of an off-duty policeman who was getting physically assaulted by two younger crooks on the street while he and his wife Shemane were out on the town celebrating their 10 year anniversary. That isn't an act of a coward, regardless of how he responded to the Vietnam draft.

DeadlyRamon.. I will say this though. What I like about this guy is that though he was special operations, dedicated service to his country and to us civilians, he has strong sense of compassion and the ability to talk to young folks. Personally Ted Nudget probably loves this country just as any body else.. but my problem with him is spends more time wanting set of liberal people, young people and anyone that doesn't agree with him..and appearently enjoys doing it. To each their own I guess.. Mad props to this guy who is a special operator who rock a 'man-bun' , still dig the band Black Flag and share how his story is connected to the rest of us.

I agree with you, matthew gallaway. I prefer not to spend too much time talking about Ted Nugent. I`ll only do it here because someone else brought his name up.
I don`t have much respect or fondness for Ted Nugent. I never liked him and I think he`s a loud-mouthed, racist, despicable draft-dodging coward who feigns toughness and masculinity by hiding behind his arsenal of weapons(but of course, he does have every right to own said weapons).
I do think Ted loves his country. I don`t doubt that for a moment but I don`t like him and I think he is a vile and reprehensible human being.
I have a great deal more respect for Jason Everman than I do Nugent. Also, Soundgarden and Nirvana are better than anything Nugent has ever done.

We just got done with a small U.S tour and we’re heading to Japan in September and Europe in October followed by a massive U.S tour for the next 5 months before probably heading back to Europe for the summer. But I’ve been having this desire to join the Army and pursue the same path as Jason. I think about it everyday. It’s always on my mind. I’m 26 now and I don’t want to be 30 and join the military. But I want to be Special Forces. On top of that I want the structure and discipline in my life. I don’t know what to do really.

It's kind of funny how good we have it, and we can judge things without any experience.

@@whiskey4609 What a funny comment! Probably from someone born in US. Your Country gives that "peace" to you by making war with third world countries in their lands, not in "America", the best way to profit. An american talking about nowadays being a peaceful time, thats so funny, even the word "relatively" doesn't fit... I always say, the most dangerous international terrorist group is the US Government and its Army, "lets exploit everything those poor people have, using the argument to install democracy there." But yeah, I agree with you, Americans are certainly very spoiled.

I served from 87 to 08 as an Infantryman. 30th AG is where I started in November 1987. I never lost my individuality. I had a lot of fun and did some really cool shit. When we crossed the berm on 24 February 1991 in to Iraq we had Slayer's "War Ensemble" blasting in our vehicle. I served in Iraq 03/04 and 05/06. I went back to playing drums in 2009 and still play in a punk band today.
