- This was a real issue that after posting this, others had similar issues. I thought if you did not have the chip present the car would flat out not start, but not with this Cherokee.
You will get a laugh out of this and hopefully my frustrations will benefit and shorten your troubleshooting life. Once the key system sees the chip you do not need it to keep the car running.
very nice -- my key's end snapped away, and I put the end part in my pocket and I didn't think of there being some RFID chip or something so that the key would allow the car to start but without the chip close enough nearby the car would would disallow continuation of running -- after watching your succinct video, I snapped the key's end back on, and now the cheap Jeep is running smoothly again -- thanks for helping -- bless you Sir
Hi there I have wj 1999. And last week it did the same engine shutoff. I fixed this...1st. I locked the car with the daily remote I use, then I removed the battery positive wire, after a wile i reconnected the wire, I brought the second remote control and open the doors, And congrats the engine started.
Thanks,
Had the same issue on GC 2002. I also have two keys and this video saved me a lot of grief. Thanks!
hey man i know this is a super old video i just want to say thank you today!! i was about to set my jeep on fire a couple min ago and now i feel like banging my head against the wall because it was just a simple key!!! thank you so much!!!!!
IF it cranks without starting on some models it could be the 10amp PCM/ECM fuse under the hood has a hairline break that is hard to see, can happen if you jump a dead battery, so swap that fuse. ALSO if like me you get a spare dumb key for the door and you put it in to start the Jeep, it does the same thing. & The Keyfob even works to lock and unlock doors but it acts like the keys were 'deleted', after 1999 the error code Pxxxx comes up for the skim communication, but it still can just be that 10amp little red fuse by the battery, since he does not mention it , check that first with a bright light or just swap it. & I'm rootin for you hope that's it.
Thank you, Erik- saved my life! TOTALLY works, and I DID laugh out loud when the damn thing started and idled. Neighbors must think I'm a nut...
I know with this model Jeep's when you turn on the car without the chip it Will turn on but then turns off right after 2 seconds. I saw this in a informational video by Jeep themselves.
Thank you, you just saved me a night of no sleep !
Insert your key and turn the drivers side door lock to the right , then left and then right again ...this will reset the security system.
Had the same problem, your comment saved us.
Many thanks!
Tried it, but did not work. could you explain more
What do you mean turn the lock to the right and left. You mean unlock, lock, unlock?
the JGC(Jeep Grand Cherokee)s/WJs have known issues with loose wires in driver door and bad/old batteries causing these specific issues
Thank you so very very much. That just happened to me with using a remade key .
Little trick Tape or zip tie your chipped key to the halo behind the plastic and have extra keys made for the ignition and the doors. (Doesn’t matter if you change the ignition tumblers and have a different key for the door and ignition). The computer is happy reading the chipped key and you can change the tumblers if worn out or have a cheap key made and use it. No more 80 dollar keys that have to come from the dealership. No new computer just plain old hardware store keys 🤷🏼♂️. I own more Cherokees than one man should sooooo 😂
I only have one key
Any idea why Grand Jeep Cherokee turns on but then dies right away
Stalling could be caused by crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor which are cheap
Congrats on commenting without watching the video
Would that be why sometimes it won’t turn over in Park?
What if I lost the original key, what can I do?
Question any ideas what else could do this if the key is ok
😲 thank you i have had to replace ignition cylinder on our 04 jeep grand cherokee laredo due to wear it was the only key we got from previous owner so when i changed cylinder it wouldn't start, replaced battery still it would turn dash on yet not start i was frustrated and then i saw this video thanks again i have put original key on the ring with the new one so that our son is ready to roll!
My Jeep just started doing this any TIPS OUT THEIR WOULD REALLY HELP
Wow same problem, it was driving me crazy, thank you for clearing that up!!
Your welcome!
LOL, I was about to write a comment that it's probably the wrong key, (no chip) or throttle position sensor, or the computer has crapped out. At the end I found out it was the key. :)
Thank man you saved me $300 dollars, your the boss,,,,thanks
Does a 1999 have a chip on the key as well? I am buying it tomorrow and the guy had a new ignition key and door key made for it, but it doesn't have a chip.
Gracias amigo
thanks for the help it work
I have this problem in my car how I can solve this problem.
Show me every thing for solve this problem and I ask you is there relation between impolizer and control box in front
I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee with a chip key. Every now and then, and becoming more frequent, the SKIM fugs up and won't let the jeep run. I have the bottom of the steering column cover off, and when it acts up, I have to disconnect the skim, turn the key to on, then off a few times, then reconnect the plug on the SKIM and it works again. Pain in the bum, but it works. I only have one key, and it is chipped.
Just did this and it worked but sometimes shuts of sometimes stays on. Did you resolve the whole issue eventually ?
Why don't you just glue the chip under the plastic next to ignition. And your worries be gone.
for such a cheap key better make a new one
Hi, i replaced my pcm in a 2002 JGC. I have the keys to the jeep the pcm came out of, could i just open both keys and switch the chips?
John Everett yes you can
John Everett if the pcm it came out of has two keys and you have two keys to yours you can easily program the two keys from your pcm to the new pcm and have 4 keys so you always have extra sets... It's free just look on Google how to program a chipped key to a wj/grand Cherokee
Years ago a lady at a big lock smith shop told me they had a way to match the chip code with any chip type keys. It didn't sound too expensive. I don't know???
I bought blank jeep chipped keys from ebay and the locksmiths want $200 to cut and clone.
Stringer Media I guess not so cheap after all!
did you change out the ecm in your process of hunting down the problem?
My jeep has been doing this issue on and off the last couple months! I cannot figure out why, but I only have one key that came with my jeep and it's the grey key with the chip in it. What else could cause this? I've been driving it anyways, but found I have to rev the engine every time I start it because eventually that will catch and keep my car running, but then a couple weeks ago the entire car just died completely on me. I had to have it towed to the shop, they said they replaced a few cables and fuses, I left the shop and the exact thing happened to me again a couple days later. Had it towed again and they wanted to say it needed a new starter and relay but they wanted to charge me another $565 after I already paid over $200 for literally nothing. I had it brought back to my house and replaced the starter and relay myself but I'm having the same issue still! I was stranded for 6 hours the other night; I'm too afraid to rev my engine now so I'm avoiding that until I can figure out what else could cause this issue! I've replied the IAC sensor and fuel pump filter. my next guesses are the crank shaft position sensor or fuel pump.
Hey Jessica, You may want to have your AIC or Automatic Idler Control replaced if it has over 70k plus miles which is almost an automatic replacement that will fail during 70+ k miles. You may have 100+ miles and maybe it has already been replaced and is good for a good 70k miles. They are very easy for a DYI or Mechanic to replace and are about $80-130 bucks. Here is a video on it - ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=2000+jeep+jeep+cherokee+iac+replacement
Better you know going into it. The more expensive fix that it could be but not as likely is the computer failing. I would go with the AIC
Thanks! I have already replaced the IAC sensor and fuel pump filter. Last weekend I replaced the starter and starter relay. I've been told to check the spark plugs but I feel like the shop I had it towed to twice would have checked that? But I'm wondering if it could be the fuel pump or crank position sensor? I feel like I'm in over my head at this point. :/
I really appreciate your response thank you!
Jessica, I feel your pain. Cherokees can be very tough to troubleshoot as they have multiple issues that can look like others. My take on this, is someone took your money by replacing your starter, and if it runs well for as long as it has then your sparkplugs are not the issue. Fuel pump might be consistent and is an ok guess to replace, but that can be tested. Crank position sensor, if out would always act up. I do not want to give you advice to go on a hunt to replace parts, but common sense would tell us that the AIC was the best place to start. There are some other items, I do not have their names that would control the idle, but your saying it is intermittent? or you just cant idle? If it is intermittent, then you have to dig deeper, and most mechanics like to just replace and test. I found this on 02 sensors which might be a way to go see the symptoms wont idle - ua-cam.com/video/ZDPfgKaC5Ks/v-deo.html
Jessica, I had a very similar problem....read message #3 on this thread... www.cherokeeforum.com/f5/2000-jeep-grand-cherokee-anti-theft-problem-197861/ Turns out it was the wiring from the SKIM module that run through the steering column. I had not been able to start the Jeep for a couple days....just moved the tilt wheel down a bit and tried again and it worked fine. No guarantee how long that will work....sounds like a broken wire inside the insulation from moving the tilt wheel around over the years. Of course, I'm not sure from reading your messages if your problem only occurs when you are initially cranking the car or if it is actually dying on you while you are driving. If the problem is related to the SKIM module, then it's something that only occurs during the initial start-up.
I finally gave in and took my jeep to someone my renter recommended. He tested the fuel pressure and knew my fuel pump was not acting right. I paid him to replace it for me and my jeep has been running perfect!!!!! It was my fuel pump all along! Thank you for your replies!! I need a project car so I can learn how to do all of this myself!
I currently have the exact same car but lost the keys and were wondering is there a way to replace the ignition without having the old key in the ignition
how much was the gray key cost u ??
How did u fix it ? I'm buying a 04 Cherokee with the same problem . There's only one key but the car starts for 4 or 3 second and the key light flashes and the car turns off . How would I fix that ?
if you dont have a working key then a new key must be programed in car
GTP 750 new chipped key instead
A bit late but it's the skim module to check ,call dealer
Try replacing the battery in the key.
Did yoy cycle the key from OFF to RUN three (3) times to dee if a code was displayed in ODOMETER like P1563?

Dietrich Nattzi Blitzwerfer the JGC(Jeep Grand Cherokee)s/WJs have known issues with loose wires in driver door and bad/old batteries causing these specific issues
Gabe Ulrickson I’ve seen you leave this reply a few times, could you elaborate on it more please? Which wire? How do you fix it? Thanks. You seem to know a lot about it.
Johnny's Cousin Steve if you find a wire that looks burnt out or doesn’t have that much continuity going through (like a charger that you have to hold a certain way to charge) that’s how those wires work and you just have to cut it and splice it or run it new again from end to end if you wanted to
Something wrong with key chip
My car does that now but my engine light is on
What f***k my grand Cherokee is 2004 and starts and gets on, but immediately shuts down, and I disconnect battery and put it back and I turn again and it does the same...And I know it is not a key issue I don't have any copy hey have only the original......
sorry my reply is a year later but please tell me how your situation turned out? (p.s. youtube was messing with me)
My 2001 CGJ has 2 weird issues it will start and warm up fine i'll either back up put it on drive then stall
or i'll drive and the minute i put my foot on the break it wants to stall but i het the gas a little harder to avoid it from shutting off
can any one please help me... as I lost the only key I had.made a spare one it starts and turns off.
any solution please
Reen Sam its the security system that shuts down fuel pump....you need new key or reprogram the keys and then reset ur remote fobs lol
I had a new but its not a transponder key. Secondly to reprogram the key you should have a original key with you
Any solution from you or a way to bypass this system?
Reen Sam you have to get it programmed at a dealer for the chip if it's a silver key your screwed
That is not true. Any locksmith can program them.
Hey quick question. Mine just started doing that but with my chip key any ideas
W hff at is p1685 on 2003 j33p

Rob Blank no
My jeep just clicks don't crank what you think it can be because you said you know these jeeps thanks please get back to me
