Yes! Display auto-rotates--even upside down if needed. There's a wall plate adapter out there now for this unit as well. And thanks for the tip. Did you check what the internal temp was reading in Console > About?

Been running mine for a few weeks. The downside right now is the lack of low end 2.5G switches in the Ubiquiti lineup to pair with it. The enterprise 16 switch at almost $500 is way too high end for most needs this gateway will be handling. (Home 1 gig internet / fiber.) Additionally my particular ISP would have preferred to drop straight into a fiber SFP which is not an option here, so I had to get a media converter SFP to Ethernet. The USW Ultra needs a 2.5G version. It’s a great option for distributing 1G and boatloads of PoE (cameras) but it’s a swing and a miss for high internal data rate while mixing in a 1G fiber connection. For most folk if they don’t need massive PoE, the Lite 8 is a better option because it’s Layer 3 and the Ultra is only Layer 2. Great box. It needs the supporting switch made.

The Max sounds like a great product if it could connect directly to the new U7 pro with 2.5 and power it through POE. Lacking this feature is a huge miss, which could have been solved if there would have been an Max Switch with 2.5 and POE. However that doesn’t exist either unless you want to buy enterprise at enterprise prices. The form factor of the 16 port switch is too large to match with the UCG max. People who buy maxes want to avoid needing a rack.

Thanks for the feedback! That switch is a good match! I'm hoping that come out with a more affordable Enterprise 8 PoE type switch without the SFP+ ports.
It's a cool device for smaller/home installations that want both UniFi Network + Protect, it's just unfortunate how much they're charging for storage, esp given they use relatively cheaper Kingston drives in them. It's also very disappointing that the no-storage variant does not come with a storage sled, preventing you from using your own drive without first buying one of theirs. It's a scummy up-sell tactic on Ubiquiti's part. I hope that changes in the future or they at least sell the sled at a reasonable price (it really should be included though). I'm waiting for some kind of UDR refresh (maybe a UDR Max) that I can easily recommend to friends/families, my home is already full UniFi but it's hard to recommend their current line-up for homes, at least if you need cameras too.
Thank you! You helped me to decide between udm pro and gateway max. I clearly now know that i need gateway max with my u7 pro, u7 pro max and for future want to add cameras and ring door. Ring door should be capable, right ?
The U6+ plus needs power that the UCG Max itself cannot provide. You need either a PoE switch added between the UCG Max and U6+ or a PoE Injector/adapter: UniFi PoE on Amazon amzn.to/48S0FtW
Yeah, I should've mentioned that. No UniFi gateways have port aggregation but nearly all the switches do except for USW-Flex, USW-Flex-Mini and USW-Ultra.
Hello, vey nice video. Please give me your advice: I currently have 2 Wifi 7 APs and a 16 port Pro Max Switch. I pretend por purchase a cloud gateway to truly take advantage of the Unifi ecosystem, and in the future probably I will get another 2/3 Wifi APs. I am currently upgrading my Internet fiber speed to 10Gb. What gateway do you recomend in order to talke advantage of the 10Gb at least for my desktop work station?
That’s some fast internet! You’ll need a Unifi gateway that supports a 10G WAN connection. Then, you’ll need a 10G network switch. A minimum, the switch would be the USW-Flex-XG. $300. This one has the regular RJ45 Ethernet ports. Or, it’s easier to just get the Aggregation switch that has 10G SFP+ ports. This one you can connect directly to your Unifi Cloud Gateway. That’s what I would do. In terms of the cloud gateway that you need: at minimum UDM-Pro. That can handle 10g internet but only without threat detection. If you turn that on, it will go down to 3.5G. A UDM-Pro-Max will get you 5G with full threat detection. But if you want full speed 10g internet without compromise, you’re looking at the EFG. It’s a pretty $2k. store.ui.com/us/en/category/cloud-gateways-enterprise-scale/products/efg?a_aid=Apex&chan=yt
Thanks for you detailed answer. It seems that UDM Pro Max would be the way go. Just another question: I’ll just use the 10Gb in one or maximum 2 work stations. In this case I’ll still need the Aggregation Switch? Or I just can use the 10 SFP port of the UDM Pro Max directly to the workstation? Also my current USW 16 Pro Max POE has two 10Gb SFP ports, could I use one of them?
I have a Linksys router and looking to put a U7 outdoor externally to get wifi in the garden, will that connect straight to my router or do I need a gateway of some sorts?
You don’t have to get a gateway. This video is for you: Add UniFi Access Point to Existing Network | Step-by-Step ua-cam.com/video/q6l7_-mWsbc/v-deo.html
I have the UXG Max and the Cloud Key 2 and the (not the Cloud Gateway Max). Is that an equally good setup? If not, why? Both devices together have 1GB more than the Cloud gateway Max.
The UCG Max at 1TB is $350 but the UXG Max and CloudKey+ at 1TB is $400. Spec wise, nearly all the same. So your setup might be more robust, and easier to upgrade components in the future, but for $350 all in one, the 1TB UCG Max seems pretty good.

Hi ,Can you use other switches with the UCG-MAX ?. I have 8 port netgear poe swtich and then convert my existing to asus router to access point via wifi or is it all proprietary to Unifi.
Yeah, you definitely can. You just can't manage the third-party switch from the UniFi dashboard but you'll see the devices connected downstream. And, yes, also can add the Asus router as an access point. You'll have limitations though so eventually, you'll go down the UniFi rabbit hole and get all their equipment ;)
How much sqft do you need to cover? You might be okay with a UniFi Express (UX) and a CloudKey+ (for your NVR). It depends how many cameras you want to add. If you want an alternative to the UCG-Max, at your internet speed, you'll be fine with a UDR. There is a big limitation on the number of cameras though.
Adding PSE would increase internal heat a LOT - it would likely self-destruct. The power transformers in particular for PSE are the primary problem - they usually need some sort of heat dissipation on them.
So my current setup is a Zyxel USG110 router going to a 24 port POE switch, and from that comes out my Unifi Gen 1 Cloud key and 2 access points. Am I understanding that this UCG MAX would replace my Zyxel, and Cloud Key? If so, can I transfer my customizations I made to my Zyxel to this as I have a static IP and need to access things within my network from outside?
Yes, it’ll replace your cloud key and your router. Just setup your cloud gateway max with the same settings or whatever settings you need. Since you’ll be replacing both your router and cloud key, I would set up the UCG Max from scratch. You can backup some UniFi application config files though if you’ll like and restore to the UCG Max.
I’m looking at removing my netgear mesh and going unifi my biggest concern is need one AP that is not wired back to the the network 2 AP can have wired backhall but one need to be in mesh mode and I want to keep all AP u7 is possible any ideas?
U6-Extender would be easiest at $150 but of course is not U7. All UniFi APs basically do mesh. U6-Mesh also great option. No idea if UI is coming out with U7 versions. But consider if you really need that in the first place. If you really do, you should be able to power on the U7-Pro and mesh it.
Their Pro-Max-16 is kinda a desk, or wall-mounted, switch. But yes, hopefully there can be a smaller, more affordable one. Maybe something similar to the Enterprise 8 PoE in terms of form factor.
Im looking for a setup for home security. Im thinking 7 cameraes. 1 dorbell and 2 wifi routers.. my plan is using a CG max 1TB and a lite 16 pos switch. then there is ekstra ports for internet in rooms aswell. does it sound like a viable solution??
If you only need Unifi for camera security, and not networking, you can consider the CloudKey+ or UNVR instead. The NVR is room for full size hard drives and can work with your existing, non-UniFi network. However, if you want ongoing full UniFi, this cloud gateway max would great. Just realize that if you turn on 24/7 recording on all the cameras you listed, the 1TB won’t give you much playback history. I haven’t put 7 cameras on the UCG Max yet so I can’t tell you how many days of footage you’ll get. But, if you’re okay with only recoding smart detections, then this would be a perfect solution.
HI one question I know ubiquity sells option up to 2TB but I wonder if I get the none storage and I have a 4TB NVMe will it recognize it? I know some times some devices are limited on how much storage they can recognize
I've already read that someone just did that without an issue. I can't guarantee it though. Just buy the same type of NVMe, a quality one, and it should work.
Synolgy do NOT has 2.5GB connections, yeah you can connect both 1GB of the Nas to 2 ports 1GB on the switch and use one of the 2.5GB ports on the switch to connect to yours computer 2.5GB port, you will get 2GB ( 1GB + 1GB ) from the NAS if you have Multichannel active. The other option is to pay an arm and and a leg fro the Synology 10GB network adapter.
@@ApexOneTech Synology do NOT have 2.5 Nics, you can connect the 2 ports of the Synology NAS ( 1gb + 1gb ) to the switch and have a max of 2 GB in multichannel if yours computer has a 2.5GB Nic.
I'm so sad and disappointed to see this device. It would have been perfect, if it wasn't for its software suite which horribly lacks modern traffic SHAPING capability that other devices such as the Mikrotik routers via RouterOS, and Netgate via pfSense+, or EdgeRouter (UISP) offer out of the box. For me, to be unable to fine tune my own network traffic other than by setting hard limits is unacceptable. So I will never buy into this underwhelming ecosystem until Ubiquiti/UniFi ups its game.

@@ApexOneTech thank you!
They have the 2.5g Max, now they need the 2.5g ultra switch.
Their Pro-Max-16 is kinda a desk, or wall-mounted, switch. But yes, hopefully there can be a smaller, more affordable one. Maybe something similar to the Enterprise 8 PoE in terms of form factor.
Ok, i find . It`s a new topic
In case of CGU, when I enable IDS/IPS, I am limited to 1Gbps but is it a limit for each lan port, or on the wan?
All ports are 1gbps. So, yes :)
The LAN ports are 1G on the UCG-Ultra so it won't matter.
I should also mention, make sure you PoE switch will have enough PoE budget to support all your cameras and APs.
@@ApexOneTech I also have 2 wifi ap and thinking of the doorbell
Hi. How you find the comparison table ?
Go here and scroll to the bottom: ui.com/us/en/cloud-gateways
HI one question I know ubiquity sells option up to 2TB but I wonder if I get the none storage and I have a 4TB NVMe will it recognize it? I know some times some devices are limited on how much storage they can recognize
I've already read that someone just did that without an issue. I can't guarantee it though. Just buy the same type of NVMe, a quality one, and it should work.
@@ApexOneTech thanks

So the rumor is wrong that the no-storage version wouldn‘t have an ssd-latch?
@@gregsonberlin3782 It will not come with a SSD tray but Ubiquiti will sell a tray for the no-storage variant.
Does it support more than 2 TB?
I haven’t personally done so but I know others that have installed third party 4TB and it worked without an issue.
Yes, that's one option. I meant the latter: getting the 10 gig adapter but just using it up to 2.5. Why? Because 2.5 is enough 99% of the time.
@@ApexOneTech Synology do NOT have 2.5 Nics, you can connect the 2 ports of the Synology NAS ( 1gb + 1gb ) to the switch and have a max of 2 GB in multichannel if yours computer has a 2.5GB Nic.
Anyone notice theirs getting hot?
What’s the internal temp you’re seeing?
If only it had POE. Missed opportunity in my opinion
Would probably be difficult to package and manage heat
they forgot rule number 1, never give away feet for free
I'm so sad and disappointed to see this device. It would have been perfect, if it wasn't for its software suite which horribly lacks modern traffic SHAPING capability that other devices such as the Mikrotik routers via RouterOS, and Netgate via pfSense+, or EdgeRouter (UISP) offer out of the box. For me, to be unable to fine tune my own network traffic other than by setting hard limits is unacceptable. So I will never buy into this underwhelming ecosystem until Ubiquiti/UniFi ups its game.
can i buy the no storage option and install my own nvme without buying anymore addons?
No. You’ll need to get UniFi’s $19 tray
