Elon Musk delivered the commencement address at the USC Marshall School of Business undergraduate ceremony on May 16, 2014. He was introduced by Dean James G. Ellis.
1. Work SUPER hard
2. Gather/Join great people full of talent and work ethic
3. Pay attention to SIGNAL, not noise
4. Don't follow the trend
5. Take risks now when you're young and don't have much obligation
You have Elon on campus after all the LA traffic, and you give him less than 5 minutes (with pretty bad sound recording).
He is visibly under prepared by any standard, but his sheer presence let me feel my tuition paid off lol.
I think maybe Elon only has 5 minutes.
The crowd is ecstatic and that was only 2014 Elon Musk imagine to have 2021 Elon Musk.
Got to appreciate the raw candidness….he is still that same person …8 years later and billions $ later
Fight on !
how could you possibly put this legend into a stifling box of 5 minutes he deserves eternity
Take risks and do something bold you won't regret it.
I was beaming with pride at my daughter's graduation from USC Business School, my alma mater. I was thrilled to hear Elon Musk speak. He was fantastic. Elon is a shinning example that "high beta" people(aka risk takers) move the world forward. 3X he was near personally bankrupt by his companies that became huge successes. In the one failure and your done forever world that I come from it is refreshing to see a risk taker succeed spectacularly 3X from near business death. Lesson here is pain that doesn't make you weak or kill you makes you experienced, stronger and better and someone to take a chance on. I would back Elon in any venture.
you only give this guy 6 minutes. this is pathetic. he should be given 1 hour.
It's like the twitter for Musk, he made magnificent use of it.
agreed
@@stephenharperisgay this comment aged like wine.
7 years later, this ‘guy’ became the richest man on Earth 😮
@@stephenharperisgayyeoo💀
I think he was a bit nervous, perhaps unprepared. But fuck it, he's Elon Musk, he can do whatever he wants.
He's always like that. I think he's a Sci-Fi geek like a lot of us on the interbutts. Wouldn't you be nervous?
wish the volume was higher
OMG luckiest class ever
Facts
I would agree to a degree.…
But I had an equally great commencement speaker(s) when I graduated in 94’!
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were my commencement speakers!
Incredible! I’m proud he spoke here
This guy is so dedicated loved the video ❤️ .
Even if you’re not successful it’ll be worth it
Elon Musk for president.
BlueBetaPro Yes please
Jean-Luc Decoster yup
if he runs for president then he won't be able to give time for spacex and for better future we need spacex
Elon Musk for Emperor :D
He can't. He was born in South Africa and his parents aren't American...
I wish Elon Musk would run for governor of California.
Frankly I think he would get less done as governor than as CEO of two companies. Politicians have so many people they have to cater to. He would have a lot less freedom of action if he ran for office. And I'm pretty sure he would hate it and consider it a waste of his time.
@@PINGPONGROCKSBRAH yup. do you want him to work 24/7 or something xDD
he doesn't have the time for this, he's only into engineering which can help changing the world and saving human species. A lot of people can run president but only he can achieve what he's been doing and visualizing.
It's great how as great of a achievement and business as paypal is, it just get swept under the table compared to his other accomplishments.
Christopher Walken is amazing.
For People who are don't have time to watch the entire video.
1) Work super hard in the initial stage of the company.
2) Gather great people.
3) Focus on products more than advertising.
4) Don't just follow trends, have a first-principles approach. Physics or Psychology
5) Take risks when you're young cause you don't have the burden of the family, especially kids.
These two quotes....
"So, work hard, like, every waking hour. "
"Rather than reasoning by analogy,
you boil things down to the most fundamental truths you can imagine, and then you reason up from there.
And this is a good way to figure out if something really makes sense, or is it just what everybody else is doing.
It’s hard to think that way, you can’t think that way about everything.
It takes a lot of effort. But if you’re trying to do something new, it’s the best way to thing.
And that framework was developed by physicists to figure out counter intuitive things, like quantum mechanics.
It’s really a powerful, powerful method. "
Can you explain me the 2nd quote you mentioned, in simpler words, that 'Boiling it down to fundamental truths' one.I didn't quite understand that actually...
who would have guessed that 6 years later elon would be come the richest person on the planet and among the most influential too
luved it
Only 6 minutes!?If this were my commencement,I would like to listen to his speech for hours rather than listening principal and other guys talking trash...
Exactly !
It is incredible to think about his humble beginnings.
Super humble, his dad only had a diamond's mine in South Africa
he came from a wealthy white family in Apartheid South Africa. Very humble indeed
"humbled" :D
Does anyone know what he was referring to in the fourth point- when he talked about working out things from bottom to top and relying on analogies, and its relation to thinking employed in quantum mechanics? I think I have a fuzzy idea of what he means, but I'm not totally sure...
Let me know if you got that point and explain me in simpler words please.
Musk's speech was right to the point. He lives in SoCal . Fight On!
his 2nd advice is very dangerous for startups though, in fact it's a suicide idea. Spending everything to make the product better it's a suicide mission for startups. The ideal plan would be start off with a great/useful product and spend 80% of money on marketing and 20% on R&D.
@@blackbox1024 you can't just generalize like that. If you're an electric car startup like tesla you better spend most if not all of your money on RND at least in the early stages. However, if you're something like a platform-based company like airbnb, you're gonna have to up marketing efforts more
@4:21 Rather than reasoning by analogy, boil things down to the fundamentals of truth. Reason from smallest to biggest. Principles of physics, also the derivative of all knowledge - Philosophy
Did you understand that line of his,if yes please explain to me in simpler words.I didn't get that one...
Best speech I’ve heard💪🏻💪🏻 but i wonder why he was stuttering
I feel lucky to be a part of that

I hope by pure statistical chance that this ends up as an NPC's name

whats up with the volume? turn that shit up
Who else is here for English Online?
*Raises hand*
Could it be that in this day and age you don't *need* to spend on traditional advertising?
What did he say at 5:27
Elon is so cute.
Yes! I came from Wikipedia
📍Culverhouse College of Business
Too bad he only talked for 6 minutes :/
1:45
I can barely hear him, even with my volume at max!
Please increase the sound on this video.
Stuttering shows intelligence, his brain is working while he talking.
He looks very tired. Hope he can get more time for himself!
Hahaha yes awesome thank you keep this here forever grateful. Elle. However! #regret my science notes on physics twitter ? Is that too prompt? 👂
He is a terrible speaker, but he is a hero.
He put all of his ability points into science
wrong,idts
That's what people don't understand about the rare ingenious of a brain that must work around the conventional engineering of a brain caused by certain voids... in the brain. He is highly analytical, I see that, he might also have a bit of OCD.
It's fine. He speaks well and you couldn't expect he likes an international speaker because he is not.
I think he speaks well.

Five minutes USC? Is Musk a job applicant on an elevator pitch?!
USC: Meh, let's get some random billionaire doing some hype stuff and give less than 5 minutes to speak.
7 years later...
Who is watching this after Elon Musk becomes World's Richest Person?
He probably slept 4 hrs before coming
100 hours a week doesn't equate to double the work compared to someone working 50, especially for creative/knowledge areas. I could be working 50 and getting things done much more precisely compared to 100 hour-weeks full of mistakes and blunders.
Wouldn't agree with him on getting twice more done with twice more time spent, efficiency doesnt work like that
It would probably be more because of the momentum
Well let's see. Who's the multi billionaire? Oh not you so fuck off
he seems nervous.
Good advice, I guess, but it's not very strong as a commencement speech
6:08 that blonde is a ten
Totally agreed 👍😉
I was in the audience when he gave this speech at USC. I remember being very annoyed at him for making his girlfriend sleep in the office. That part of the speech rolled around in my brain for weeks.
wtf elon was there
Ruthless businessmen? Yes. Innovator and friend of the people? Nope. Just ask him on his views of competing alternative energy vehicle brands/technology like hydrogen and any other electric car that doesn't get him paid.
You can make some of the people happy, some of the time...
idk they make sense to me, hydrogen fuel cells arent really used commercially for a reason, they arent that efficient compared to electric the rate of progression for battery storage far exceeds the energy efficiency of combustion. and his cars can charge alot quicker than other manufacturers cars who might I add only create green cars to meet regulations. Not many of them exceed it.
Kenny CanHe The opposite is true. All battery will never be a viable alternative to fuel combustion because those 60000ib tractor trailers rolling down the highway will never be able to run on an electric motor charged by a battery. The battery would weigh heavier than the cargo, and it'd take a week to charge.
***** Simply not being Elon Musk is enough to save lives.
clinkit The power of the motor they use (310kW, 600 Nm)in the tesla S enough to run a 60,000lb truck and if they optimise the tranmission ratio will help too, but you prob won't get great mileage on it at the moment.
You're talking about a very young industry here, it's stupid to speculate that something will "never be able to run" if they have never tried to use their technology to work on a truck.
he is not a good public speaker
you are fucking scumbag
I'm so disappointed! None of this guy said made sense.
work hard as hell success is not a fairy trip he said work 2 times harder than the competition to get things done in less time !
Javid Suleyman Does it make sense now?
I am a Trojan class of 2014. This was such a huge disappointment. We were so stoked that our commencement speaker is Elon Musk. He was in every way unprepared and rude for not being prepared.
Julie Kim you guys gave him 5-6 minutes? In my opinion he gave great ideas and advice I wrote them down now time to take action
Julie Kim Huge disappointment? Elon Musk said that he doesn't prepare for his speeches. He said he would rather work on his companies than spend the time to prepare for a speech. Sure, he stutters a lot but that's because most of the speech is impromptu. You should be thankful that one of the most innovative people in the world spoke at your graduation, not a lot of people get that opportunity. Pretty ignorant comment you made there.
This man is running several companies at once. I'd say that he has done far more for you through his business and engineering than you could ever adequately thank him for.
Julie youre a privileged little cry baby
He was never nervous, he just always talked like that. This guy stutters a lot.
