  • The startup sound has been an iconic part of the Macintosh since 1984. With Apple discontinuing the sound, Jim Reekes, the creator of the sardonic sound we know today-voiced his opinions. To pay homage, let’s time travel through Mac startup sound history.

    UPDATE: in macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple has officially released a checkbox option that lets users turn the sound back on! We did it! We brought back the bong!
    Hey, all! Hope you enjoy the new video. As part of our tribute to the Mac startup sound, today we ask: what startup sound was your favorite, and do you think Apple should bring it back to the Mac?

    • @DBLCreations
      @DBLCreations 6 років тому +15

      I have a Mac Pro, that came with macOS Sierra and it even doesn't play the sound anymore, it did in the beginning though, just not anymore since a couple of updates. So a command line might fix this, i will try it out. But yeah, i think they do need to bring it back. There was always an option to turn it down or mute it, so i think people should have that choice. I liked it, it let me knew that my system started up fine.

      The Quadra startup sound (or any Mac with the 1 MB ROM) was my favourite. Apple should definitely bring back the startup chime - it's what made the Mac different from a PC way back when.

    Never been a Mac person, but it sucks that they got rid of the startup sound given its history. At the very least, you would think they would have at least gone the 'disable by default, but give the end-user the option' route. RIP :(

The startup sound, glowing Apple logo and MagSafe charger made me feel like I bought a very unique and premium laptop! I feel like some of these features add to the experience of owning a MacBook and I would definitely like to see Apple bring it back.

    I'm so much used to it (for the past 12 years, which is more than 40% of my entire life) that I can't really imagine a Mac not having this sound. Steve Jobs would never let this happen.

    5:09 My favourite Macintosh startup sound is the one at 0:11 - 0:13 (Source: very old Computer Clan video). I believe that it's one of the greatest sounds ever.
    I'm also with the 96% of the poll; I might not use Apple products, but I would really like the sound to return back. I would like to hear it on startup. I think that it makes Macs stand out from generic Windows PCs.

When I boot 68040, it is the regular Mac chime. When I boot from the PowerPC card, I get that cooler sounding chime.

    I remember when I was 11 and I got my first iMac, fantastic little 21 inch thing it made me so happy, hearing that beloved "Duunnn" chime is part of the mac experience, to me that sound means "hello! what will we do today?" in its own chirpy so-dumb-it-cute way, removing that to be "slick" or "sophisticated" takes away from what a mac really is, A device to just enjoy the magic of technology and computing.

    I have the one of the first iMacs with the startup sound (1998 Rev. B Bondi Blue), and one of the last iMacs with the startup sound (Late 2015 5K Retina), and yes both start up with the same sound which is amazing to think about given how nearly everything else is completely different. Very sad how Apple removed it from the latest Mac models, and it just goes to show how the Mac is being neglected by Apple in the post-iOS-device era (iMac with Retina 5K and iMac Pro are really the only big product releases they've done to show otherwise in the last four years, maybe the 2016 MacBook Pro but that one is debatable for a variety of compromises, and the MacBook only exists to provide an iPad-style Mac at a much higher price).

    Want the Startup chime again on 2016+ Mac? Follow this info:
    (so far confirmed to work on many models using Mojave or Catalina)
    1. Open Terminal
    2. Type sudo nvram StartupMute=%00
    3. Enter admin password and press enter (you will not see anything as you type)
    4. Restart Mac and enjoy.
    To disable, do anyone of these 4:
    - Type sudo nvram StartupMute=%01
    - Type sudo nvram -d StartupMute
    - reset PRAM on startup (press and hold CMD (⌘)-OPT(⌥)-P-R on startup)
    - turn off and pull plug on desktop Macs (not all models)

    I hate the new Apple these days, they just keep removing things people love, things that are iconic, and things we are used to, when its not needed! Apple back in the day used to ADD features, not REMOVE them, their products felt different, and i think its a real shame that Apple is removing these features, that their products are recognized for.. And all the way back in 2007, when the Apple event where the iPhone was getting announced, Steve said its gonna be a Phone, a iPod, and a breakthrough Internet communication (my english is bad i know), now tell me, how useful is an iPod, without a headphone jack? And that they dont have space for it, goddamn it, a guy from the internet brings it right back, which takes up much more actual space, so that excuse is kinda useless. Jeez, this is long, i doubt that anyone cares enough to read this all lol

      Nah, Apple used to be notorious for having proprietary connectors and only being able to write to storage media formatted in their file system so you couldn't put a file on a floppy on a Mac and use it on a PC. I think there were a lot of things to like about Apple before they switched over to focusing almost entirely on portable devices, but that wasn't one of them.

      "Apple back in the day used to ADD features, not REMOVE them" - actually, Apple has a very long history of discarding older features in order to move forward.
      When it transitioned away from the 68k CPUs it didn't try and maintain compatibility for newer machines, because that would have compromised its ability to innovate.
      When it released the iMac it removed the floppy drive. Conventional logic dictated that the iMac could never succeed without a floppy drive because every PC manufacturer still supplied them, but look what happened.
      Apple was also first to eliminate the optical drive, starting in 2009.
      Apple has never been slow to remove legacy technology when it thinks it's headed for the graveyard, and so far it's never been wrong to do so.

    you forgot to mention that the power macintosh 6200 had a startup sound exactly like the one we know but instead in d major instead. also the startup sound in big sur is a lot different than that of other macs because the sound is part of the firmware not the OS so even if you downgrade back to catalina you will still hear the new big sur startup sound even if you turned it on back in big sur. the startup sound this time is in f major

    Can You Do An History Of Nintendo Startup Sounds?

  • @kfcnyancat
    @kfcnyancat 5 років тому +1

    I get why startup and shutdown sounds got removed from Macs and Windows. They make starting up and shutting down slower, and while they used to serve the purpose of telling you the computer is working, they really don't need anymore because most people know how to use computers. Design shouldn't get in the way.
    While my logical brain knows this, I can still miss computers being flashy, OSes being aesthetically unique and trying to wow you.

  • @wcodelyoko

    That sound is SOOOOOOO SAD! I just hate it. It's almost creepy, expecially when it gets to get lower and lower for every mac that comes out.

  • @OtioseFanatic
    @OtioseFanatic 3 роки тому

    On my 2020 Intel Macbook Air, the terminal command circulating around DID re-nable the sound, but its volume was tied to your system volume level so if you had your mac muted or low volume when shutting it down, you wouldn't hear the chime on start-up. Im guessing thats why people thought it didn't work. Its nice that turning it back on now is just a checkbox though.

    2:53 But if you're seeing this screen, that actually indicates a start up error, and you're likely hearing a scary Chime of Death as well, either after the normal startup sound or even instead of it. So, if you reboot to this screen, you're likely to be more scared, not less, and this is like the opposite of a "palette cleanser."
    Normally a Mac OS crash would show an error message with a bomb icon that also claims that the computer must be restarted. That is, if it didn't just stop responding instead.

    To unmute the startup chime:

    To mute it again:

I've always found it to be very friendly and inviting, while still saying "You are about to use an awesome computer." It helps that there were a bunch of 5200s at my elementary school, and thus the 5200 startup sound was the first Mac startup sound I ever heard.

    OS 9's intro was simple, and displayed the welcome message in a couple of languages.
    OS X Kodiak (Public beta) and Cheetah 10.0 and Puma 10.1 and Jaguar 10.2 all used the same intro.
    It changed in OS X Panther 10.3 (which had 2 intro videos, a beta intro and a final intro).
    It changed again in OS X Tiger 10.4, which only had one video.
    OS X Leopard 10.5 and Snow Leopard 10.6 used the same intro again.
    OS X Lion 10.7 was the 1st to ship without a welcome video. That was a real bummer.
