  • Dot had a load of apples on her apple tree so we decided to make some apple juice and cider. i had to make a quick and dirty apple scratter to save use having to do it by hand. it worked great and we ended up with 10 gallons of juice in the end.

    Loved this video, great fall project! Can almost smell the apples. It’s fun that Dot’s parents are now helping too! And it’s cool you’ll be giving to your neighbours AND the horses. All lovely indeed! I’m one who hates to see the summer pass, but this sweet video is cutting through my autumn blues. Well done!

    I read a book by a guy living on the black mountains near Wales. He had given his pigs the mashed apples and not realised it had gone over somewhat.
    The pigs got very drunk and were violently sick and had explosive diarrhoea, looking back he could laugh but at the time the smell was apparently quite something!

    Thanks, have made apple jack before from hard cider i made, all you need to do is freeze distilling. This basically means putting the cider in the freezer, the water freezes but the alcohol dosent so you drain it off. This comes out about 30% proff depending on the strength of the cider, very nice indeed

    Great solution to a problem. Also, dunno how it's done, but I had a neighbor make apple butter out of the mush after making cider. Guess it's cooked down for a while, then ran through a fine sieve to get out the large particles. Not sure what's added to it, if anything, but It's quite tasty, kind of like an apple jam.

      Old time apple butter is crushed apples, cider, spices, heat and TIME. My father and a friend made apple butter in a huge iron kettle. It took about 12 or so hours of tending a fire, but was that stuff awesome.

    • @elizabethholden9351
      @elizabethholden9351 6 років тому +1

      Actually it's fairly easy to make. Cook it down with water, brown sugar, and spices ( usually cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and ginger) to your taste. Strain it and can it in sterile jars. Boil jars to seal. I have also cooked the mash in a crock pot on low heat, when I had other chores. If you peel apples before hand you can also make apple sauce; nothing better with a roast pork and potato cakes dinner.

    Mmmmmm home made cider, yum, be careful giving the apple cake( waste) to the horses, check with the owner, some horses may bolt all the apples at once and could get colic (very bad for horses), better on the compost heap. You could have a good taste test party when the cider ready though, If you need any testers Id volunteer ; )

      @PKMartin 6 років тому +1

      British people don't call the liquid that comes out of apples "cider", we call it apple juice. "Cider" here implies it's alcoholic, there isn't any other kind of cider.

    • @Crewsy
      @Crewsy 6 років тому

      PKMartin
      There’s the difference then. Cider here in Canada and the USA as well I guess is the fresh squeezed juice from apples where as apple juice is filtered in someway losing taste along the way.

    • @valkasolidor6727
      @valkasolidor6727 6 років тому

      Did you notice how easily the juice came out of the scraps when he squeezed it in his hand? Now imagine squeezing an intact apple by hand. Good luck with that.

    • @QALibrary
      @QALibrary 6 років тому

      My thinking behind the question is: First off you doing a number of actions instead of one thing (putting apples in a physical machine crusher) - but adding to that by building and developing a thing to mash up the apples - that takes more time and effort and also losses juice etc in the processing each operation is not 100% efficient (seeing I have not got all the facts I can not work out the effort and crushing pressure of the machine via physics formulas). My Second part, have you lot not heard of physics and law of levers to make more efferent work this is a lot better than squeezing an intact apple by hand that why people invented an apple press? Also not sure why Kris was using one lever to work the press instead of 3, being so out of balance he might have ended up doing more work/effort (not sure about the SI unit/term) where it would have been more beneficial to screw in the other two handles into to press to have full 3 levers working.
