I had a similar scenario when I brought a second kitty into the house. They did the whole enemies, pretenemies, frienemies, and finally true friends. Adorable. I was scared to leave them alone ... fearing they'd wreck the house ... but one day I thought "I don't care. I have to leave. Wreck the house if you must!!" I come back hours later to find them asleep together, their foreheads touching, and their paws touching. They really had me fooled for a while. 🙂💖

As the human mom of two non-related ginger boys, this fills me with so much love, joy and nostalgia. Nothing beats seeing the barriers crumble and a budding relationship form between your furbabies. :)

I 100% agree!! I had a male cat that would let the rescued kittens suckle him. At first I thought it was weird, but then watched how the kittens would thrive from that closeness and realized what a truly loving soul he was to other cats. I already knew that from his interactions with me, but he continued to show his awesomeness until he was 20!! I sure miss him. Now we have three rescues and swear two are brothers a few years apart. The other is a cool, very prideful Siamese.

my two cat first day they met they fought and did not even get close to each other but now they are best friends ever 😁
Same with my neighbor's. First two days they're hissing to each other and today they're playing together like a football team with a pingpong ball and a rug as the net.
This is not how you introduce a new cat. Keep separate to the them adjust to smell, then let them see each other. Supervised time together. But this turned out perfect. Sweet brothers for life.
Agreed. This one turned out good but it can go the other way and they can completely reject each other and be always stressed and alert and fighting each other.
I was about to post the same thing. Glad it works out, but the wrong way to do it. You break it down into steps, as you said, each for a few days.
1. New cat in separate room. Cats can hear each other, but that's it.
2. Move times with each cat's scent into the other cat's space so they can smell it other.
3. Open door into new cat's door with a screen or barrier between, so they can smell, see and interact with each other, but can't touch.
4. Remove the barrier for short, supervised visits. Make them longer as time goes on until they are eventually able to roam free.
For a good example, check Claire LuvCat's videos when she adopted the mom and her two kittens into her home with 5 or so cats already. You can see all the stages that I outline except maybe for two. it's done very gradually over a period of a month or more, and she completely avoided most of the hissing and growling and all of the swatting at each other but introducing them gradually and not threatening the earlier cats' territory by abruptly dropping the new cats in.

Yah I saw a few mistakes but honestly wasn’t worried because they did it mostly right and most importantly the big cat was clearly a happy, well adjusted cat, and you could hear the gentle positivity in the owners voice. cats tend to mimic their owners emotionally, so I wasn’t surprised that these kitties actually started getting along quite quickly! One of the best things you can do for your pets psychological well-being is take care of your own, and your relationships with those you live with, because pets pick up on our energies: their emotional state is bound to ours, and they will act based on their emotional state.

Almost same. My older cat is a drama queen, he throws a fit every time I pet the younger. He needs a cuddle, a treat, a place on my lap every time the younger one is getting it. He's so jealous even after 6 months!
@zenmasterme my two do this too, they're still not cool with each other, they'll tolerate sleeping about four feet apart though. I try to get them to play, got plenty of toys, even tried treats/bribery, nothing's really worked yet. lol.

I feel like the reason why the cat had a hard time taking to the kitten was they were basically forced into meeting. Like, cats are really territorial and you're meant to keep them separated for at least a week while having them get use to the others scent. THEN slowly introduce them. It makes me really sad that a lot of cat owners force a cat to suddenly share their territory

Here's a tip: If you get another cat along with the one you already have, keep them separate for a few days. Find out where they like to sleep. Then exchange their bedding. It helps the two get along quicker because they are more familiar with each other's scent.
This was my two they are also brothers (half). The older growled, hissed etc. It’s been a few months and they generally get along. The big one will put the kitten in his place when need be but doesn’t hurt him.
I used a pet playpen for the first few weeks.
Little Sacha wore Cosmo down! When they sleep together it appears Cosmo was joined by Sacha, not other way around. She's so keen to be with her big bro! I loved all of this. Thx. Much love from Adelaide down under! 👇💜🙃

These owners deserve very high praise! Too many people return pets, or drop them at shelters when it isn't "love at first sight"; these folks demonstrated amazing patience! Animals typically figure it out, given enough time. Well done!

My aunt had this problem when she tried to introduce her old cat to a kitten she had rescued.
The old cat passed away unfortunately after their move, but when she got a new cat, she did proper research and introduced them slowly.
Now they love each other, even if the one hates being groomed by the other.
@Froddobaggins WasmyMilkman What my aunt ended up doing was keeping the two cats separate for a few weeks. The new cat stayed in one room, and everyday, she took the blankets that had the cats scent in it and let the other cat get used to the scent, and vice versa. Then she allowed the cats to see each other through the window. Eventually, she was able to open the door and let the cats interact with each other. Since they had already gotten used to each other's scent, they were relatively comfortable with each other by that point.

Not necessarily. We had an older cat and got a tiny kitten, kept them separated for a bit to get used to each other's scent. Our older cat was actually very welcoming. The little guy was always rough. Even after being neutered, he bullied our older cat til the day he died. We always felt bad about it. We'd like to get another cat but are leary that he will bully a new cat.

That's why i love cats. Last 2019 i only got #1 my wife is mad because i took a cat in, then #2, then my 1st one got pregnant with with #2, now i got 5. Now my wife decided not to give away the 3 kittens, she's got mad because i joked that i wanted to give away the kittens.🤣😂 Now the kittens are 3months old.

How cute are they...too funny man! Cosmo was not having it at first...like hell no! So glad he came around and he’s so gentle with him...he knows he’s a baby...precious!
This was surprising. The "ginger/marmalade" orange-striped kitties are known as the friendliest and most mellow. I had one at he was adored by everyone who met him. My vet said they took an informal poll at her office and most people said if they could have only one kitty, it would the orange-striped one.
Normally when two cats are introduced, they are suppose to be separated from room to room so that they will give each other time to notice one another and get used to each other, but this turned out okay! Looks like the owners got lucky! 😌

Omg, so I waited like 4 days to introduce. At first they hissed and stuff. Now they won't stop playing and pouncing on each other. But Luna my tuxedo is a lot more laid back now. Probably due to a combination of a new apartment that we moved into and the new kitten. Also, Leo the bengal meows while eating. So weird lol.
