My understanding is that as soon as some higher up in the New Zealand government heard about what happened they immediately offered to activate the pacific version of NATO and offered whatever support they could. As well two thirds of their countrymen were in support of sending troops to help in Afghanistan.

From a 9/11 survivor, (I was in Tower 1 when the first plane hit, then had to run for my life when the first building fell. After I got my bearings I made my way down to the harbor) I want to thank you for your reaction to this wonderful story. I was one of the people those amazing boat captains came to take off Manhattan Island. The subways shut down completely, but the bridges weren't shut down completely, they were only shut down to auto traffic. They remained open to foot traffic as tens of thousands made their way out of Manhattan on foot. One of my older brothers came into Manhattan that day on foot over the Brooklyn Bridge to find his daughter who was in college not for from The World Trade Center. He was able to find her and they both walked back out over the Brooklyn Bridge to safety.

Another New Yorker here. I was in tears before you guys even started watching the video. The level of respect that you guys showed in your intro was really touching. It's understandably a sore and difficult subject to speak about for anyone. It's especially important for anyone from the tri-state area to acknowledge the care and consideration you put into even showing this material to your children. Everyone has an anecdote or unfortunate reality like your husband's. Sorry sir I forgot your name just now.
I figured I'd contribute and share mine. I was in my second day of the 6th grade and it was roughly 9am. School has not really started; all the students were still in homeroom. The first thing that happened was a teacher I can't remember stormed into the room essentially dragged my homeroom teacher out of the room to let her know what had happened presumably out of earshot of the children. She returned crying and wouldn't stop and looked like a grieving widow. The other teacher realized she had screwed up and immediately found and left one of the schools security to watch us. Us kids are understandably all confused and we weren't downright refused information when we asked for it. Then the horror set in. All students (a NY public school, so hundreds, maybe thousands of students) were moved from their classrooms into the main general auditorium and lunch room. No information just a lot of scared faces. That was the worst of it was everyone over 5 feet tall had no vocal chords. By now you should've figured out that I was in one of the unaffected boroughs (Queens). And then the match. Mr. Lewis, our Dean, every few minutes would walk back and forth between the auditorium and lunchroom and call out lists of names and finish with "your parents are here. You're going home." Out some variation of that. At the end of the school day, I was one of 7 children remaining. This might sound like negligence, but in hindsight I'm in agreement with my dad that leaving me in an essentially empty brick and concrete building supervised was probably as safe a place as I could possibly be.
It was maddening watching for hours as hundreds of people just vanished around me without any explanation. I was really annoyed and I was going to let my dad have it when he finally did pick me up. I was wrong. I got as far as what the hell dad? And he didn't say a word the look on his face was all I ever needed to know. My dad is a born and raised Brooklyn native who lived through all of the stereotypical horrors of that neighborhood through the 50s-90s before it was heavily gentrified. He is not afraid of anything, I've seen this man chase after a grizzly he caught a glimpse of in Yellowstone to get a picture. He was afraid, and it scared the ever loving shit out of me. Complete silence as we pick up my brother from his elementary school only a few blocks away. Then, silent car ride home. My brother was just as confused as me but all I did was look him dead in the face and shake my head no. That was it.
He took us home and sat us in front of the TV and turned it on and honestly I didn't know what I was seeing. "Is this a movie?" To which my brother got a firm no.
That's when it really all hit for me. And I just started throwing out names...
    Mom?
    Uncle Jimmy?
    Uncle Patrick?
    Uncle Matt?
    Kelly?
    Jen?
Thank God my mother was alright. I was young and my internal map of NYC was not as encyclopedic as it is now. My mother worked in Harlem in upper Manhattan miles away so she was safe of the falling buildings. But she was still trapped among the people escaping the north side of the island into the Bronx.
For the others, all I got was a resounding "I don't know," which is far more terrifying than any definitive answer. In the days to come I would find out that all my uncles were safe. But being two firefighters and a sanitation truck driver they were in the thick of it through the whole catastrophe and cleanup effort. Uncle Matt was forced into early retirement for his efforts. He was among the many firefighters who got sick from the debris clouds and has since passed. Uncle Jimmy and Patrick are still kicking. They made it to normal old age retirement.
So there it is. Everyone remembers, no one ever forgets. Thanks for reacting to this one guys. Apparently I needed to get some of that out. So I appreciate it if you took the time to get this far.

As an outsider, I always value these perspectives of people who have gone through loss. I myself have gone through horrors in my lifetime, but I never fully comprehended true loss until the news came to me a few days ago that my 12 year old sister tried to take her life. She is still in the hospital. She couldn't wake up. I can't handle it. You are so strong to have lived through that. Although our losses are from different circumstances, loss is the same. I'm glad you've persevered. So there you go, that's my story. I was in another country when my baby sister took over 100,000 MG of painkillers. I've never felt so helpless. I didn't know if I'd see her face again. My wonderful baby sister.
I don't know what it is about your story that affects me to this extent. I've always felt a lot for other people, but I just can't put into words how your story has made me think so very much. Bless you. Your family deserves the very best. I'm so grateful that your mother survived. I'm sure she is a profound woman.

And the men's women who have passed away in this war for our country should be more honorary for them respect also need to think and respect the present bush for not being a p**** like the one we got now for standing up for the country and taking action that the longest war we ever had in history but most of it because being too nice Americans by helping them get their government donate them the American money giving them our equipment and show them how the fight for the country so as soon as our dumbass present we got now so pull out make us look like we lost this deep down every American knows America did not lose it for they did what they did they all came out victory and heroes in my eyes and they should never have to pay a damn thing for the rest of their life they shouldn't come back over here be homele they should get free insurance free food for the family everybody in America you need a Passover we need to pass the law if you fight and we always sees and fought not but just joining the army you have to go overseas if I we all should be paying in if any of our taxes good every man and women who fight so we can take care of our heroes and we should not regret it we should be proud of it we are not the number one in the war of the best government but our military our soldiers of the United States of America is still the most dominant powerful leaders of the war we choose to be nice to other and respect other countries we're not on the either side we are with God our government may not but our heart and soul of the country is for resist that frag like he is the king of the country and he is we should honor it not putting me down on the ground catching it on fire ripping it up showing away disrespecting it that should be a lady she'll be kicked out the f****** America to do that if you came from a different country he came from American citizen you need to obey and part of the laws of America not the law when you came from so remember you came over here for a better life better for your kids your birthday well respect the country that gave you that life you can't do that get the f*** out that's why yeah please do not vote for Democrats ever again so far that I started voting very f****** Democrat was a failure and the one before we had before I started voting for the for the hoe seem like to me it's a Democrat party is all f****** all screwed up they're not for America before they sell and the antichrist because he's coming and got his coming back we need to stand by and stand with Israel no matter what that is a temporary of God they are the one out of the three you do not want to take you want to be with him as well America is a nice takes America is the one country as well so I just. And unfortunately the Russia is the other country China will be on the either side we all know that but Russia will also put a soccer to us the whole time we thought they are on the other side whether or not now I know everybody think towards coming in right now but it's coming yes he's coming some people think it's going to be in 21 no it's not going to be in 21 no one don't know not in Jesus itself God said the people keep making the day he's not going to he's not going to come back until no one is expected to happen and you wouldn't think about it but I will tell you a sign but one man said the war is in peace that's just a sign that last finest time we still got a little while ago on that in our eyes and got eyes it could be a day please zombies when you call me okay that's that's fake news you ever got inside of their brains and maybe stupid so that's what they think it's coming out this really don't have nothing to do with the world coming in other than it's going to piss God off because it's man-made and we're all getting punished for it thanks a lot trying for f****** that up and whatever it's name on the American side need to be kicked out shipped to China and a towhead maybe in power right now but they won't let the power forever one day they will always hurt me or die and they will be punished for all the crime they did wrong no way they can call their cells the other people they're good people all the other countries fall for it like Russian China for the pussies and they don't want to be attacked by because they can take over them too America is not f****** afraid of them it's not afraid of nobody you know that we want to lose or not we're not going to back down I'm going to protect our lady we have helped every freaking country in this war and what kind of respect of America's get back and get cues that world the bad people that were either but then again I would cost around the world we're not beating our women there are making our kids married I'm grown ass ugly ass guys and what it's not going by and killed in people who was the world to take care of them and run them off and kill the main leader we ran them out it's 7 days when we first start and we kill the son now our dumbass president pulled us out and they found out about it they all happy that American sleeping because they know they know that they wouldn't be able to take over if we didn't left because we would have killed that's why they waited and they hide out there was afraid of America but they also knew we're not going to say that forever they are good haters and they are very patient the other countries need to get ready and be apparel cuz they're not going to work with the world forward is coming and they will get killed and they will get dominant and who stands beside them with them we'll just history repeats itself world war II before he started and guess what we had a virus going out and killing me everybody gets sick and also stuck in the world well guess what happened now if I just got out start killing people all said we're in war this time it's not here yet but it's coming I don't believe it's going to be in my in her hours time but it will be in our kids time thank you to men and women who the rest of your life as far as the country God bless you oh by the way we will be back of a wreck once again fighting tonight but this time we need to wake up the war to show them we can and we are the nicest country in the world and the health respect but we also are one of the most powerful things country that you really don't want to f*** with

I was with my wife when 911 happened. We went to pick up our young son from elementary school early of course. Everyone was scared because we knew tall buildings were being targeted and our sons school is near a tall building. Our very young son saw the concern on us and my crying wife. He looked up at his mother and told her not to worry, he was going to be a soldier when he grew up and protect her. He did grow up, went to West Point, became an Apache Helicopter pilot and served a year in Afghanistan. He is currently a Captain in the U.S. Army.

As an American in MISSOURI. My dad was a firefighter EMT and they were drinking coffee in the TV room at the station. My dad said that every station switched over to a news channel and my dad knew immediately that we were gonna be at war. During the cleanup of 9/11 my dad was actually supposed to be sent down to New York but he ended up staying. We will NEVER FORGET. It didn’t just impact the people who saw it, it impacted the generations to come.

Thank you guys for your love and support. This day is haunting. I was 8 and I remember the day, but in flashes. Everything felt very blurry and slowed down almost like the day went on forever. I was in Virginia when it happened, but I remember the adults around me being scared of something happening here because we're a big military base area, navy is huge here and people were worried it would be another Pearl Harbor event, plus the pentagon is in VA and that's where the other plane hit. Soo it was a stressful day. I remember seeing the news footage but not understanding it. I remember my dad was very very quiet and pensive. And then just like that I don't remember anything else... not the days that followed not seeing anything about it around me... But when I was a teenager and the 10 year anniversary came around, my best friend and I decided to go back and watch the footage from that day. We hadn't seen it in 10 years and we weren't exactly experts on the subject... So we felt it was time to dive into what happened. To this day when I think about that night, it breaks my heart, it takes my breath away. Watching that footage... oh my god it broke me. It broke both of us. It felt like we were watching it for the first time. It felt like it was happening all over again, it was so real so shocking and devasting. We cried and held each other, we cried to the point of exhaustion. To this day seeing those planes go into the buildings is triggering and it hits me so hard. I'm so sorry Sam that you went through that kind of fear about your parents, that must have been terrible. Thank you for paying your respects here. I'm glad you did this video this story deserves to be told.

I was in virginia too. I was in 5th grade. My teacher decided not to tell any of us what was going on so I didn't find out until another kid told me on the bus ride home. I remember getting home and went straight to the TV and Watched the news footage and just cried. I also remember my family freaking out because I have an uncle that was an American Airlines pilot and no one knew where he was or if it was one of his planes. Luckily he was ok. Such a traumatic day but This was an amazing story.

I must be honest, I was a addict back then but I do remember waking up around 8:50 am, a few minutes passed, and I turned on the TV as usual, I had fallen asleep watching Fox news as always, but when I seen what was going on, I thought for a moment the TV had been turned to a movie channel throughout the night, Then I realized what was happening, That day changed my life forever, that day was the day I dropped to my knees, and prayed for hours, and I became clean that day, never touched drugs again, I seen how precious life was, and how quickly it can be taken, and I also seen how selfish I was to live that way. I love your family, and thank you for standing with us as we reach the 20th Anniversary, Please pray for our fallen soldiers and all the others hurt while we was trying to leave Afghanistan, please pray for the ones that our current Government selfishly left behind as well. I never realized 9/11 had that kind of emotional impact on a global scale. I knew it was an economical impact for businesses, but I guess I just didn’t think any countries outside of a general area really knew about it and that it’s a part of their history, too. To hear that it had such a profound effect on people’s hearts on the other side of the world brings tears to my eyes.

I had 17 “friends of friends of friends” sleeping in every corner of my Manhattan apartment that night. We watched the news and cried. All of the restaurants in the neighborhood were giving away free food so we picnicked and watched more news and cried some more. But there was some incredible goodness that came forth that day and over the following weeks and months. I usually don’t watch 9/11 stuff bc it was a traumatic time - stories the world will never know except for those of us who lived through it. But remembering the good stuff is important and I’m glad you’ve shared this video with your viewers. We should all remember.

I was in the Army in Germany, the attacks happened early afternoon if I remember right. I was at a German meeting away from home. I was so upset I went for a run then twisted my ankle badly. In the German hospital, a lot of staff heard an American GI was being treated, a dozen people at least came to talk with me. Returned to the meeting, entire place was surrounded by police because a few of us soldiers were there. My wife and kids in another city had military police guarding the entrance to the apt complex. Neighbors were leaving flowers and candles. It was a horrible and crazy day but same time the love and respect showed was amazing.
Sadly, I learned a week later that someone I served with just a year earlier was in the second tower hit. He was on the phone with his wife when the second plane hit. RIP William Pohlman

We didn't live in NY but my grandparents were born and raised in NYC. I was almost 11 years old in the school library. The teachers turned on the TV. Some of the kids, including myself, got up and was watching it with them. Then the second plane hit the other tower. The teachers and kids screamed and the teachers moved us away from the TV so we couldn't watch it anymore. I still remember the screams from the teachers and other kids. All parents were called to pick us up and my grandparents worked at a military base so they were immediately evacuated. A very surreal moment, especially for a 10 year old.

My mom was in the 7th tower which was the building right behind the twin towers and also fell with the twin towers. I was 4 years old and I remember my aunt just coming to pick me up from daycare and not knowing what was happening. When we got to her house I remember seeing the first tower smoking on the tv and thinking oh that’s mommy’s building then the 2nd plane hit. All I remember asking my family is my mom going to die? And the smoke over the city was so thick, my mom survived and I remember just sticking to her like glue once she was able to get home. She said she just heard a big boom and paper flying down, and everyone running out the building. My mom walked from her building to Brooklyn where we live and stayed the night with a cousin and once cell towers were back up she called us to let us know she was ok. It was one of the scariest day’s for me and I know I was lucky because many other families weren’t able to say that about their loved ones. Amazing that you guys are letting your kids learn about this!

I wanted to acknowledge this video on a personal level before it even begins. I watched your family's intro as to where you were on 9/11 and I love to hear everybody's individual story as to where they were when that tragedy occurred. Myself, I was in the United States army at the time as an E3 private first class in training on a military base in America and in uniform in the early hours of that day. We all in my class and company New almost instantaneously what had happened in New York City and what we were now facing. I was in my training to be a combat surgical assistant specializing afterwards in neurological surgeries. I was one of the class leaders of the time and also a barracks leader as well. Being in the United States military specifically, the United States army was a very traumatic time for all of us in uniform. The thought of world war III happening at that very moment while we were just out of high school and some of us doing the very first thing they've ever done in life on our own. I was sitting next to my best friend private bow. He lived a half a block from the twin towers and watched his entire life crumble when the towers dropped. I have had a hard time watching movies based around the twin Tower area and along 9/11 story lines. I was 18 and on my own facing exactly what I signed up to face. I was ready for anything, but, scared for everything I was about to face. I can speak for every one of us in the military at that time on 9/11 of the year 2001. We buttoned our shirts better and we shined our boots a little bit brighter, shaved our face one last time grabbed our weapon we gritted our teeth and we had no other option but to face what they threw at us. We all chose it in one way or another and we all knew it. Our family's knew it. Our friends knew it. The world including our NZ family knew it as well as our brothers and sisters across the world. Not only were the towers attacked the Pentagon was attacked another plane was dropped full of people in Pennsylvania that was on route to another attack. So those of us that were headed to a forward detachment rolled our socks tight packed our bags well and got ready for our orders. The rest of us that stayed stateside we awaited our orders and to which base and the hospital attached to it. Or the rest of us from infantry to transportation to refueling to aviation mechanics to nurses and tax and surgeons and every one of us at the time...
Your intro was perfect as is everybody in the world right now who starts off with their story of where they were that morning or evening or that time of the world wherever we all were. My final story with the military ended on a good note as a decorated soldier with a good track record and a big swell of pride for what I achieved. I never went to war, I took care of our brothers and sisters who really needed extra care in the surgical realm, that's where I stepped in. I was in the United States army from the years 2000 to 2004.
I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. And might just do it again before I get too old.. it's worth it in the end. I live each day of my civilian life thereafter as a friend and family to all and as organized as I was at 18.
Thank you for sharing your family. Ask away. Us Americans are open to talk about that day, or, really any day or topic of any sort at length and any detail you want to know... We are social people but if you back us into a corner... Ooh... Or touch a hair on a friend or family of us... Ooh. That's a scary thought. That is a world event!
Now I can finish the video as I pack for a fly fishing trip since it's ice out spring in northern Maine Yankee land...
So NZ Fam, how bout them rainbows I hear of out in those waters.... Are they really as beautiful as I've seen on this tube and on the hobbit??

Born and raised in NY, I was 16 at the time, I was at school. I remember leaving class, grabbing my sister and having to walk home frantic. They shut down all modes of transportation because for one thing they didn't want any other mass incident where there would be hundreds of people in one place. Remember we had no idea what else was going to happen. But also because you didn't want anyone who shouldn't have access to have a way to go anywhere to do anymore harm. Seeing clips, photos, anything of 9/11 is like a fresh knife to the heart all over again. I was in high school then, I live in California and I remember getting ready for school and my mom coming in and telling me to turn on the news because the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane, and didn't I go there once? Yes, yes I had. I'd visited New York City a year or two prior and travelled to the top of the WTC as a tourist. The view was amazing. That entire day, I was glued to every scrap of news, I remember having a dentist appointment that afternoon, and as we're driving to it, I heard on the news reports people screaming, and just couldn't hold in my tears. I'd been absorbing it all day at school, glued to the tv's. I remember at the dentist office writing down every scrap of information that was released on the news onto a napkin at the dentist because it was the only thing I had to write on. I saved every newspaper and magazine in the following days that I could. I cried for two weeks straight I think because of the hurt, the fury, and the sadness at so much lost. My father thank god wasn't on a business flight that day, he was scheduled for one a week after 9/11 and had been on one 2 weeks prior. It touches my heart that so many across the globe shared in our pain that day, that we weren't isolated in our tragedy, forced to bear it alone. It warms my heart to have seen how so many countries responded with sympathies and gestures of goodwill in the aftermath. Just watching these clips you're showing twists that knife in my heart all over, but I'm willing to bear the pain because it keeps the memory fresh in my mind as we ought to never forget what happened that day.

    @karenmcglone9096 2 роки тому

I hadn’t seen/heard of the boat saving efforts as big as it was. So thank you for sharing this reaction. It goes to show how so many hero’s were hard at work and most of the world, even a few states away, had no clue it was happening.
I was on my way into work in KY so I was not in harms way. I arrived at the customer service call center for Cingular Wireless just as the second plane hit. Throughout the day calls were coming in with more and more “details” of what was happening. Many thankfully, turned out to be rumors only, but stuck in our building with no direct link to the unfolding news updates, it was very hard to continue to take the calls from across the country.
As we would get to our lunch break we spent them around our cars listening to the most current information being broadcasted on the radio. Many coworkers had family and friends in NY that day with no way of connecting with them to be sure they were ok. The AT&T tower that was atop of the north tower (I believe it was) understandably was out of service. Our tech crews worked feverishly to reroute calls thru our networks to restore a lifeline from the island to the rest of the world. It was never enough or continual signals as the lines were overloaded with calls trying to get thru. but it was a start. Within a couple days, the company had installed tvs in our break rooms and had the news broadcasting nonstop from then on.
The desperation in so many people’s voices, trying to reach a loved one was just heartbreaking. You wanted to reach thru the phone, give them a hug and tell them it was gonna be alright. Of course we couldn’t and we didn’t know if things were going to be alright or not. Crews from across the country in many lines of work began descending on NY to aid in the search, recovery, and IDing of people and bodies. Firefighters, EMTs, police, medical personnel, food services, clergy, first responders, heavy equipment operators, clean up crews, construction, search and rescue teams and so many more sacrificed their time, weeks and months at a time, in order to help us feel safer and to be able to account for all that was lost. People, animals, buildings, etc. I day I pray is never repeated. Though proud to say, I’m an American who is a part of this wonderful land where we all pull together to lift each other up.

I had talked with him earlier - my mom wanted to see the white cliffs of Dover. He took us to a room and made tea for us as he told us what happened. We were confused so he took me down to the crew quarters to watch on TV. After we returned to England, we realized it would be a while before we would get home. People were so kind. The Epping volunteer firemen wanted desperately to get to NY to help. But of course no travel was allowed. When we were able to fly home, everyone on the flight was a bit more nervous. The air Marshall’s were everywhere. I felt sorry for one middle eastern family were watched carefully every time they had to go to the bathroom.

I live in Pennsylvania and I was teaching elementary school that day. I did not know what was happening until the principal came to my door to quietly report that a plane had crashed into the trade center. We did not put on the television because we didn’t want to scare the students so we didn’t really understand the magnitude of what was going on or what it was about. It wasn’t until lunch when we were in the teacher’s room that we saw it replayed on tv and the speech language pathologist told us her brother called his family to say he was on the stairs trying to get out (he worked in one of the towers) and he wanted to say goodbye in case he didn’t make it. He did make it out but many of his coworkers did not. It was a scary day. When we learned of the plane that crashed in shenksville, PA we grieved again. We were given a statement from the superintendent to read to the kids just before dismissal so they would have a little idea what happened without scaring them.

I did work at the WTC early in my career and always wonder about my co-workers that were there that day. I will always remember how absolutely beautiful that day started out. The perfect September day. My six year old son was at school that morning and when I saw the second plane hit the second tower, I knew that this was not an accident. Knowing that there were still planes in the air that were not responsive, I immediately drove to my son’s school to pick him up. We live very close to a nuclear power plant and not sure if they were going to be targeted. I just wanted my children with me during this time of not knowing what would happen next. I have not had the courage to visit the WTC memorial site but hope to go there some day. I was working in lower Manhattan, four blocks from the World Trade Center. It was the most horrific day of my life-I saw the second plane hit, and witnessed people jumping from the burning towers. After the dust had somewhat settled from the second building collapse, I was able to get off the island over the Brooklyn Bridge; eventually I made it home, but it took some doing.

I just watched your video on the boatlift on 911and liked it very much. I was in the state of Missouri in the Southwest corner working in a factory welding when everyone started saying that you need to see this and we went into the break room and found out what had happened. The plant was shut down for the day and everyone was send home. The next few days everyone at the plant was a bit uneasy and jumpy.

I was sitting in English 9A class, after the first plane crashed into the first tower, our Principal came over the school's pa system telling all the teachers to turn on the news. Within seconds of the television being tuned in, I watched as the second plane hit.
3 years later I enlisted. The events of that day, even though the were many miles away from me, shaped my life in ways I had never expected when going to school that day.

It's really something how one day, just one single day or moment, can have such a massive impact on someone's life path. Our parents & grandparents had Pearl Harbor....we had 9/11. Here's hoping (and praying) that future generations never have to go through anything even remotely similar to 9/11.

I think the closing of bridges and tunnels was based on several things. One, keep lookie-loos from trying to get in and tie up needed access by any first responders. Next, those areas would be highly desirable "easy" targets for further terrorist attacks. And they didn't want any more potential terrorists to get through and do more damage. Initially, only entry roadways to Manhatten were closed and then they eventually closed all exits. I'm now a retired nurse but on 9/11 it was my day off from work, so I was still in bed watching TV, being very lazy. Then the news hit and I just felt numb, like the first time hearing President Kennedy had been shot. Then next reaction: get dressed and get to my hospital, even though I live thousand miles away from New York (Indiana). Called my unit (surgery) and told to stay put as all non-emergency surgeries were being cancelled just in case percentage of casualties would be airlifted or other targets closer to my home would be targeted. It all seemed surreal. Such a helpless feeling. Interesting to hear what citizens in other countries saw and felt that day...it truly did affect all of the world.
May I add that I find your family truly delightful. Thank you for your channel and for seeing your children are exposed to so much history!!

I worked by NASA & my husband at one of the largest chemical plants at the ship channel. We thought we would also be a big target. The port of Houston area folks were all rushing to North Houston. It was terrifying for all Americans. Luckily we lived next to Ellington Field. The only planes we saw every day where jet fighters making their rounds. We felt so safe with those jets flying over! No trains, no boats & no commercial planes. Sky was dead silent for a very long time. The sound of our fighter jets kept our spirits high! Thanks again for teaching your kids about world history!

I was sitting in my Office on Camp Comanche, Tuzla Canton, Bosnia with my co-worker/buddy. We had Armed Forces Network on the Radio and heard the report of the first plane hitting the WTC. We decided to go find a TV and went up to the Coffee Bar where they had one. We got there just in time to see the second plane hit the other building. We, being old soldiers, knew what this meant right off. I looked at my Ex-Green Beret friend and said "We're going to war". He, being rather laconic in nature, just said "Yep". The National Guard Troops around us looked at us like we were crazy. I addressed some of the guys I knew there and said they had better get used to the idea because who ever did this is going to die.

I was stationed in Naples, Italy where we were part of a NATO communications hub. It was just when the Italian 1SG came in and was yelling at us to turn on the TV. By the time we got to the AFN station, the second plane was just about to hit. We were just in shock. All of us Americans were told to go home immediately. As soon as we got to the housing area, we were locked down for a week. Marine snipers were sporadically placed throughout the housing area and the NATO/US bases. We knew we were going to be called up to deploy but it didn't happen for us just because we were part of NATO. But we still provided equipment and communications support from where we were.

My memory of the beginning of 9/11 started when my daughter called me from her duty station to turn on the TV. I turned it on just in time to see the second tower hit, I literally slid off of the couch onto the floor. Everything on her NAS had already gone into lockdown so it was a while before she made it home. And that is why the bridges and subway were shut down...no one had any idea who was orchestrating the attacks nor where the next place would be hit, so every route possible needed to be contained.

I was in First Grade when this happened, six years old. We were in the middle of our English lessons when the principal calls the classroom to tell the teacher to turn on the news station, with caution. She turned on the news, and I couldn't comprehend what I was watching. My brother and I, along with many other students, were picked up by our parents/caretakers. I didn't even watch the entire event until I got home with my parents. It just felt like I was watching a horrible apocalypse film. Everyone was terrified that the nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was the next target. Apparently, the entire base was on high alert. Later that day two planes taking off from the base broke the sound barrier! Living near Wright-Patterson AFB, I'm used to hearing planes come and go, but this sound was terrifying. My parents were tense and hovering over my brother and me as they continued to watch the news. Other than the sonic boom, I soon avoided watching the TV to read my Harry Potter book instead. Overall, I can't believe the feeling I still remember, but as I got older I was told that my age group would practically be the last to "remember" anything of that day due to our ages. I can't wrap my head around that...

On 911 we lived in NY just 50 miles from Ground Zero. (Suburbs of NYC) It was the most beautiful clear blue sky day, I even mentioned to our daughter who I was bringing to school, Wow look at the sky! 10 mins later the planes hit! That night everything was eerie silent, all we could hear were the US Air Force planes flying overhead. One of the saddest moments when I drove by the train station the next morning (train that went into NYC) and all the cars left overnight in the parking lot. Many of our residents did not return. The next few days we began to feel the loss and our American Flag began to fly everywhere, along the highways, homes, stores, etc. We United under the most horrific situation. I remember that day as if it was yesterday.. I worked for Ansett Australia and due to company difficulties, Tuesday Sept 11 was my last day after 13 years service with this great airline.
After finishing my shift at 9pm, I got home and my wife and I were about to go to bed when the late news came on. We stayed up till 3am watching the news come through, could not believe what was happening.

I was in school in 6 th grade near Carlisle Pennsylvania and I still remember the intercom to the teachers to read there email. They read a quick message from the email and we continued school as normal teachers acted as it was a normal day. I couldn’t imagine what they were thinking throughout they day but they held it together to keep us calm. Our school was the shelter for the town so we were most safe there anyways. We were about an hr away from summer set pa, about hr and a half from the pentagon and about 2 hrs from New York City. It later led me to join the fire fire dept and 15 years later now a lieutenant rank in the volunteer fire service, we will never forget that day for sure. I was about 11 or 12 and didn’t fully understand everything at the time. Nothing beats the firefighter and honor that we hold to our communities and risk we will go through to protect and bring peace to the people we serve. In America at least 75% of firefighters are volunteer and receive no direct compensation and we work full time jobs and usually a lot of overtime and weekends, we just love to be there to help someone on most likely there worst or one of there worst days of there life, and it’s no greater honor to help someone in need or as the Bible says to lay down your life for someone else in need. I was just up over 42 hrs a couple weekends ago because I had to work 14.5 hrs and then had a tornado outbreak and was up all night then left from helping the community to work another 8 hrs on a Saturday and still would do it again cause we had people who lost property and could not travel cause trees and power lines were blocking roads. Got some sleep then had to work 8 hrs Sunday and 8 hrs all the following week.

Months after the attack, various people on the news tried to insist that people would forget where they were and what they were doing when they found out, like it wasn't a big deal. Like we should just sit back and do nothing.
Twenty years ago, the morning of September 11th, I'd just recently started my freshman year of college. I walked into the cafeteria and saw what I thought was a disaster movie on the TVs. Everyone seemed oddly quiet, too. A little later, I realized it *wasn't* a movie, it was a *real news broadcast.* I finished breakfast in a daze that continued through the rest of the day. I had no idea what was going on. Everyone around me whispered about planes and bombs, something about the Pentagon, and the towers. I didn't know what the World Trade Center was before that day. Grandpa served in WWII and I wondered if this was how people felt when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
