Kenneth, totally agree with you about carrying & using an old film camera-and how it helps you interact with people and make new friends. The images themselves record a certain period of fashion, social trends and values, and that helps us understand what happened in the past. Ginsberg’s use of an old Kodak allowed him to capture and record
things & people around him-and that is remarkable. An old Kodak Retina is one of the best cameras that fold neatly into your coat pocket but can be pulled out on short notice to capture a photo. Really well done.❤❤😊😊

The Retina IIIC was used for the Antarctic expedition "Hellbent for the pole" . Great images !

Love Ginsberg’s photographs. I don’t think Ginsberg used the IIIC - that model came out in 57 and I think that Ginsberg started using his Retina from 53 and possibly earlier. Looking at a few of Ginsberg’s self portraits taken using his Retina my own bet is on that camera being the Retina 1 (010). The IIIC is a lovely camera though.

The Kodak Retina IIIC is a very fine camera. it is well made, smooth operating and has a very sharp Schneider-Kreuznach 50mm f2 lens. This camera can take very sharp photos. Its light meter is slow to use, but w practice it isn't hard to use. the shutter is whisper smooth w a very light click. Finding a Retina and having a tech giving it a clean, lube and adjust so worth it. 😊

I completely agree! You don't happen to know a camera repair person that works on these do you? Now that Chris Sherlock has retired, although fortunately he does produce how to videos.

I have the IIIc (small c), which is basically the same camera but as you noted it is the earlier model and there are no frame lines. It was a great vacation camera when the kids were little. It took up no space in the suitcase . The photos were always excellent The Schneider F2 Xenon lens is among the legendary lenses and the Gossen light meter was always right on. I agree with you about the 80mm lens. I bought mine for $20 but is so complicated that I don't think I ever used it. I also have the Retina IIIS which was Kodak top of the line interchangeable rangefinder. It is really a fine camera with automatic changeable frame lines and parallax correction. However, the 135mm lens only focuses to 14 feet which makes it almost unusable in many instances. Always enjoy your videos!

The interchangeable lenses on the IIIc is just a holdover. What’s good is that it lets you access the shutter and adjacent lens surfaces for cleaning.
IIIS is insane one paper, seems like the perfect leaf shutter exchangeable lens RF, but has several drawbacks in real life.
It is perhaps the best exchangeable lens RF that was ever made, that does not take Leica, Contax or Nikon mount lenses.

The small c is the first one I learned photography on, so good. Sometimes, though it's smaller, I like that viewfinder better.
