- A massive manhunt is underway for the gunman behind shooting rampages at two businesses in Lewiston, Maine, that left up to 20 people dead and up to 50 injured. Police have identified 40-year-old Robert Card as a person of interest, saying he’s “armed and dangerous.” NBC’s Emilie Ikeda reports for TODAY.

He threatened to shoot up a National Guard Armory and no one did anything?!?!? You have to take any threat like that seriously!!!

He's not allowed to own a gun..The strict gun laws in NH is for us innocent law abiding citizens so we dont have one...The criminal doesn't care about your gun laws..They just get what they want to use illegally..

People aren't *obviously* mentally well vs. *obviously* mentally unwell.
It is a spectrum and where they are on that spectrum changes based on their situation.
If people are in pain and they want to reflect that pain onto others, guns are far more effective than anything else.
Guns are a simple compact way at hurting/killing others with a simple pull if your finger. And you don't have to be right next to that person, you can hurt them at a distance. It is designed to do just this. And it does it very well.

Mental health issues of our military (veterans) is a huge issue. No one thought to continue providing healthcare services after he was released from a facility this past summer?? If he was continuing to hear voices and obviously spiraling downward, why wasn't he placed back into a facility (if not for his safety, but for the safety of others)?? Obviously the people around him were aware of his declining mental health and deeply concerning behavior(s).
It's the responsibility of each individual and their family to address mental health issues military or civilian

I keep seeing this being said. My thought is, this evil man had it planned(scoped out). Went to the first spot, cops called, police all went to that area, he drove away quickly, went to second spot (as police were responding to first location). Then the police had to respond to the second spot as well as evil man drove away, ditched the vehicle, and now took off. My thought was he was thinking of it as a "distraction". With something of such great loss in the first location, he fooled the cops by thinking it wasn't going to happen again 4 miles away. With two big, awful situations, it gave him time to flee.

So red flag laws did not work here. The guy recently was in a mental lockup so was a federally, if not state, prohibited person and cops could have taken his guns but did not.
I bought a shotgun several years ago and one of the questions on the background check form (done online there at the store) asked if you'd ever been ordered by *a judge* to be admitted for mental health reasons. You can admit yourself and therefore the answer on the form would be a no. Also most insurances cover X number of days in a hospital and once your insurance won't pay you get discharged.
I have no clue how this guy ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks (self admitted or ordered by the court) but that slight detail could be a reason for why he still had access, if he did.

Hopefully Lewiston and its surrounding towns didn't defund their police departments back when that was a thing. Some of the lowest gun crime stats in the nation are in Maine. And all over Maine tens of thousands of high powered rifles are being tuned up for deer season next week or so, so the guy is literally moving through a sea of deer rifles everywhere he goes.

Prayers go to the victims. I have to ask, why has someone with confirmed mental health issues out of the hospital, blatantly not taking medication or receiving services, being checked on by the police after making violent threats, to be allowed access to a firearm? I will for the second amendment, but I disagree with allowing people being with confirmed criminals and confirmed mental health patience requiring on going services to have access to any weapon. As a country we don't take mental health seriously. That is the bigger issue that we see here. Especially when a news station so easily has access to that information. Two balls dropped: health care and police. It has to be said.

I know they are searching for this guy and a shelter in place is in order. However no doubt he is dead. He left a suicide note and took the cowards way out. He probably drowned himself near the water where his car was found.
Its a shame they didnt look for him and his firearms after his first domestic violence complaint, his domestic restraining order or the two weeks in a mental illness facility for threatening to murder a large amount of innocent citizens. Why legislate more gun laws when the dozens they have now arent enforced? Seems when its our lives the only ones with the responsibility to protect it is ourselves. Thats why its called self defense and the reason we need whatever tool is required to do so. We live in a world full of individuals so evil they can snatch the life from innocent people without guilt. Theres no government legislation that can remove that growing evil....no rules, no laws, no amount of police. It can only be done with equal or overwhelming violence from a good man or woman protecting your family, yourself or complete strangers.

The US government and those concerned should regulate the possession of weapons among those with mental health issues and veterans with a history of PTSD. When armed with very lethal weaponry, they may pose a potential threat to society.
