Yeah, AI is a good idea but whenever people (artists and writers specifically) are scared that it is going to replace them if they ask for just a little extra pay, that’s when you know that it’s going a little too far a little too fast.
The big issue with arguing about whether "iPad kids" will turn out worse is that the iPad isn't the relevant factor. The parenting choices and potential neglect is the concern - the iPad is just the most modern symptom of how some parents delegate responsibility away from themselves.
Exactly. While yes there are clear OTHER problems caused by the iPads and Social Media and the internet - it's not so much the device that is to fault for that. And at the end of the day, it's the parenting that is to blame, not the device, not the access to dopamine hits and all that. Ex. Social Media is leading to increased anxiety due to being more connected with the world. But ... so did radio, so did TV. Sure, by today's standards those are MUCH SLOWER ways to getting information - but there was a time where they were the fastest methods of their generations and they led to increased anxiety and depression for all the same reasons. I'm sure the telephone interconnecting households had a similar affect to seeing your family update their lives on Facebook - just a little slower than now but faster than the past.
First poster is wrong. Radio and TV didn't straight up replace parenting the way tablets have. IPad kids are addicted to dopamine hits since they're babies and in addition to that, the lack of the parenting stunts their cognitive development which is why now we see so many children that cannot read. I say this as a teacher if it matters.
I'm a gen alpha kid, (like one of those kids that's in-between gen z and gen a) and it's true that it's parents fault that they are acting like this, sadly I got a ipad (not an ipad but rather a tablet.) It's utterly disgusting, My family talked about this last night, you shouldn't give kids a device until 13. You can allow them to watch TV shows or play games, but not without supervision. Just watching UA-cam videos. I can’t imagine going through life, especially early childhood, in such a hazy bubble with no external stimulation. TV does mess up children, growing up in the 00s there was definitely a difference between kids whose parents gave them unlimited access to the TV and kids who weren't allowed to watch as much. TV kids just weren't able to keep themselves entertained in my experience. iPads are even better at keeping children passively entertained (and adults as well) so I don't think it's strange to worry about it. Moderation is key in my opinion, it'll always be up to the parents

Ok - first off, attention span: its hard to formulate any anount of emperival evidence that being raised on iPad's is dentrimental to people attention span / social skills, but I don't think it takes a lot of studying to realize that tiktok/yt shorts are bad for attention span and it all has to do with dopamine: for a sinple explanation when someone watches something that they like they're brain rewards them with dopamine, and as a neurotransmitter there is almost no end to the amount it can produce, your brain will be actively seeking out more and more content (and the most effective way is short form content). And this leads to shorter attention span: im not arguing that iPads themselves will cause shorter attention span, im arguing internet with no regulation can and will. Now unfortunately i am a byproduct of getting devices from a relatively young age but I would argue that i did a good job of regulating myself and this leads to counter point no.1, just because kids arnt told to stop doesn't mean they dont inherently know how to, i would argue that kids to a certain point will take a step back and attempt to make a change for the better. On the other hand that doesn't actually mean that they necessarily will, even when looking at schools statistics, now it is very easy to be overwhelmed by numbers, especially when they are shock numbers, numbers designed to produce fear and shock to try to curve a certain behavior or trend, it's easy to see them and get overwhelmed and not understand what is actually going on, especially with wrong presentation of data, like suicide rates being up (let's say for instance) 100%, well if there was only 1 suicide a year then its only 2 now; they argue that more and more teens are on their phones for a lot more and it leads to a decline in mental health, and we have to ask our selves apposed to what? There weren't any mobile phones in the 1900 and this decline of mental health isn't necessarily caused by phones, correlation is not causation, and with our newer generation being a lot more open then let's say the 1980's where the DSM-3 was still having homosexuality as a mental condition, it's easier for people to really embrace that things arn't always alright and it's okay to not be alright. And it's not just that, past generations royally fucked us with the "kids are stupid" mentality that hasn't died yet. Phones are an escape for people, but that being said it's also a detriment, people compare themselves to filters, and people who have the money to spend 1000$'s on beauty care, it's not easy for us to cope with realizing that we won't be the best in a lot of facets of our life, and its not easy to settle and be contempt with ourselves for how we are, and I'm not the only person on the Internet who knows this: and I'm certainly not the best to be talking about this given that I'm a kid and inherently don't know much about how the world works (that's not just me being sarcastic I genuinely don't) In summary, it's not just phones or short form content thats fucking us over its moderation, we need to be proactive in moderating what our kids do online.
iPad kids: it’s not the technology that’s ruining kids, it’s using those devices to do the parenting that’s the problem. It’s a parent issue, not so much a technology issue. I also think the internet is different than anything else experienced in previous generations.
For the first one. It’s not the iPads really, it’s the content that kids are accessing on the ipads. Each generation gets even worse and at this point parents let iPads parent their children. Furthermore, they’re letting the people on the screen parent their children. UA-camrs and TikToks aren’t good parental figures, and some can even be a bad influence. Not to mention the dopamine and attention span issue. Kids can’t be raised by Skibidi Toilet. The series isn’t even that bad, as I’m sure it was meant as a stupid little joke for teenagers. But when it blows up and kids are watching this kind of thing 24/7, it becomes an issue.
It's the iPad now. but before that it was Video Games. and before that it was TV. and before that it was the Radio. and before that it was books. and before that it was oral stories. This "The current generation is the worst one" is literally as old as the written word. the only thing that makes Gen Alpha worse off is that they uniquely live in an era where public education has been rendered so thoroughly unworkable through decades of intentionally bad policy...and of course, the long-term damages of Covid-19. but as it is, Teachers are forced to teach to a curriculum that doesn't actually teach anything except how to take a test, they have no authority to manage or discipline their students, Mass shootings and Police presence have forever shattered the illusion of safety that is conducive to learning, and students are expected to do so much work in and out of school (6-8 hours school, 3-4 hours homework) that it's no wonder that students end up as perpetually stressed burnouts that actively rebel against their teachers.

Yeah they're not focusing on the real issue, the parenting. They're focusing specifically on the iPad when thats just part of it.
