I think there was a nice chemistry between her and the conductor. When she just finished she looks to him with a question of acceptance of her performance and when she finds it she smiles and it is a sign of relief. She rise and goes to hug him. It seems like he is a fatherly master to her.
Who’s here after the chopin competition finals? By default I compare everyone playing this year to Kate and this is still one of the best performances of this concerto i’ve seen 😍
I'm a big fan of Kate and I always come back to her Scherzo, Ballade and this Concerto too! But I really have to give credit to Bruce for nailing the concerto. His playing at the Rondo section is just so clean and crisp. Kudos to him!
I keep coming back to this recording. There is so much concentration and effortless grace in Liu's playing. It is a shame how the recording industry has neglected her talent since her 3rd prize win in 2015: There isn't a single album by her (except for her competition performances from Warsaw, certainly not the best conditions to record anything), and relatively few concerts to be found online. Here is a truly wonderful young pianist the world should hear much more from.
FlaneurSolitaire: So glad to have someone else besides myself bring up this topic. I just can’t understand how the major record labels can continue to ignore a talent like this. I’ve been listening to her UA-cam performances for close to six years now, and I believe, more than ever, that she is a unique artist, and that it is a crime not to document such artistry with the highest quality recordings and videos. DG or Sony: Add Kate Liu to your roster. Take a chance and record a Chopin CD. Her fans around the world will thank you.
@@lienlee7654: She needs to make a stopover in the San Franciso Bay Area and play another recital here! I just found the program for her concert in Minneapolis, and now I’m really jealous. She’s playing Beethoven Op. 111 (which is new, at least there’s no UA-cam video yet), plus Chopin G Minor Ballade & G Major Nocturne, and the 3rd Brahms Sonata. Wow! What a program. 🙋🏻♀️🎹
I've probably listened to this performance nearly a hundred times. I was just a passive listener of classical music until I found this. Something about it is just magical
Bruce was fantastic this year. however, it added context to Kate Liu's performance. In my opinion, this is the best performance of the E minor Concerto that I have ever heard. Great orchestra. Chopin wrote this concert to be played by a woman for a man.
The identity of a pianist is not winning the competition but playing to touch people's hearts. From that perspective, Kate Liu is truly the world's best pianist.
When the audience starts applauding you before the piece has even finished, you know beyond a doubt you've captured their hearts. So it was that beautiful and charming Kate Liu gave a stirring if not quite technically pristine performance of the Chopin 1st, but good enough to place her 3rd in the winner's circle of the 2015 Chopin Competition. In fact, Kate is the first American to win a prize here since Garrick Ohlsson snagged 1st in 1970. That is quite an accomplishment. Part of Kate's powers lie in her ability to not get ruffled when a gaff hits. I've seen many a pianist better than Kate buckle and just crumble under the pressure of making a single mistake in competition. Kate has the ability to keep her composure and forge ahead and that's what kept her technical and musical prowess working to see her through the extreme pressure to a triumphant end. For that, as well as a beautiful performance, we have to lay bouquets at her feet. Note that even Maestro Kaspszyk was totally taken with her, as evidenced by his emotional embrace at the end of the concerto. I fear for Kate. She is an extremely gifted pianist who is now thrust into the pressure-pot-cooker world of professional piano concertizing. Her good looks and talent assure she will be picked up by a major concert management agency. Is she ready for such pressure? No less than Van Cliburn cracked under it after less than two decades of non-stop concertizing. Most prize winners have two option: immediately embark on a grueling concert schedule...the "strike-while-the-iron-is-hot" approach, or to quietly resume studies, give occasional concerts and gradually fade from the public's memory. The latter is a common occurrence; take all the prize winners of the last 50 years and notice that only a handful have survived. The public is very fickle and it takes an artist of the caliber of a Lang Lang or Evgeny Kissin to keep them interested in coming to see you. Kate has a huge decision in front of her. I hope she makes the right one.
+J Joe Townley Dear J Joe Townley, (Kate's) music has nothing to do with nationality (since nationality is a form of violence!) Besides, Kate Liu was born in Singapore, her physical appearance is Asian. Kate's playing music is divine as you say above!
+Anna Mayer Thank you for the interesting background on Kate. As you say she is indeed divine. She must be a naturalized US citizen since she is entered as from the USA. I would be very interested in knowing if she intends to embark on concertizing or if she plans to continue with her studies and pursue a PhD in music. Do you happen to know?
lepaintre123 Merci, lepaintre. Actually, the more I listen to Kate's interpretation all the more I am absolutely taken with her and her lyrical interpretation. She has a lovely touch, and at 21 has done something almost unthinkable: win 3rd prize at the second most prestigious competition in the world at such a tender young age. Astonishing!
+J Joe Townley Absolutely agree 100%. btw watch her interview video, she clearly has an American accent. I enjoyed her performances which remind me so much of Rubenstein's Chopin. Her ability to play phrases and keep them alive and organic, simple and even all at once is what really does it for me.
This Concert was my favorite during adolescence. At 86 years old now, I still love it with all my heart. For this reason, I turn to the magnificent performance of Kate Liu again and again.
This is by far the best piano performance for this Chopin Concerto. I have listened to 12 other ones and none is as addictive as this performance. I have listened like 100 times no and it is still fresh and so soothing to the soul!
I'm a Chopin fan. I can't have enough of Chopin... Since I listened to Kate Liu's interpretation, I cannot listen to any other pianist in that concerto. Despite the very few mistakes and imperfections, it is PERFECT! This is a miracle she performed and a huge shame that she didn't win the first prize.
Not gonna call it a shame she didn't win, because Cho's performance was worthy of the winner's circle. But I gotta say that Kate Liu's performance is my personal favorite because it's just pure passion and emotion! I love this performance and it is my favorite... her passion reminds me of Cliburn's early recording of this piece which I must have listened to a hundred times.
Cho's performance got a score of 9 from 14/17 juries so I would not say that it's a shame, but I love what Kate puts in the music through her fingers for sure. I feel I can imagine Chopin's emotions via Kate's performance better in my opinion
I've heard tens of different renditions of this piece through out the years. This one isn't the fastest. It isn't the most perfect. It isn't the most technically virtuosic. But it is the one I always come back to. Something about Kate touches in a way that very few other pianists ever have before. There's a deep, unique kind of emotion being felt here, both by Kate and by us. Thank you, Kate.
You hit the point, this is the moment when you can relax, because someone there is more delicate and subtle than you. The only thing left is to enjoy it and experience the music that is inseparably connected with the musician.
This is so amazing she really knows natually how to make the rythm really excting and gives this peice right tention. It is the best performance of this masterpiece ever and ever will be.
Just saw her perform this past Sunday in Miami...she left me speechless...what superb and talented artist. She has become my favorite interpreter of Chopin compositions.
I never have been a great fan of Chopin, but after this performance by the charming Kate, I changed my mind!! Her piano delicate and so sweet, and looking at her fingers moving on the ivory is something exceptional. Everything looks so easy so natural!! What a talent.
This is one of my favorite piano concertos. Kate Liu’s rendition is powerful and at the same time lyrical and moving. I only found out about her recently. Her career as a concert pianist didn’t seem to have taken off after this piano competition. What a shame for such a talented musician.
She is the pianist who resonated most with the public and she also received the most perfect scores from the judges but her average was lower so third place. But I still think she was the break out star from that competition.
Born to play Chopin, I'm with the Polish viewers in my amazement that she didn't win first prize but the important thing is that she shared this music with us.
I believe the reason that she din win was becos of wrong note....As far as i rmb watch Seong Jin Cho's playing there is no wrong note or mayb quite little....even though is not that obvious by Kate played quite an amount of wrong note..... PS: I din listen to the whole concerto.....only judging by listening to vivace bcos that the movement that im interested on xD
She came close, but Charles-Richard Hamelin and Seong-Jin Cho played damn near flawlessly, and they played as beautifully. If you want the definitive version, check Krystian Zimerman's recordings of the two concertos. I don't always like his interpretations on other Chopin, although his technique is unbelievable, but his concertos were a step above any other versions I've heard (including Rubinstein's). BTW, I was at university with one of Kate's teachers Alan Chow. He was, and probably still is, a wonderful pianist.
I enjoy this recording of Chopin's E minor probably more than anyone else's that I've heard....and I've been listening to this piece for almost 40 years, but I can understand why they gave the 1st prize to SJ Cho. His technical proficiency was obvious and the chances of him becoming a famous soloist is higher. With that said, Ms. Liu's performance reminds me of the way the late Van Cliburn poured his soul into every piece he played. This recording makes me emotional every time I hear it.
My favourite interpretation. I do not know why it moves me so much, especially there are so many other talented musicians - but Kate brings eveything I love about classic music.
You notice how the audience started clapping well before the final note from the orchestra? Apparently everyone in the building was moved also! That didn't happen for the other finalists!
Still remains the most satisfying and heart wrenching performance of this concerto I’ve ever heard/seen. Looking forward to her reaching 2 million views! 😎🎹
She had the audience breaking into rapturous applause even before the piece ended! Seeing the smiles of approbation on members of the orchestra, concertmaster & conductor warmed my heart! Kate, we music-loving folks here in Malaysia would love to hear you play, so make a date with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Dewan Fil once the pandemic is over!
Another more Malaysian superfan here! I almost got to see her in Indanapolis, but she pulled out (I think due to injury). Really hoping to see her live sometime! Her Schumann is incredible ua-cam.com/video/64C4nL2VNKA/v-deo.html
With a deep respect to all from that contest, this performance is certainly an outstanding one. For me personally this one was a 1st prize performance among concertos 🌸
I came to Chopin competition videos because I started with watching Seong-Jin, but Kate's performance is amazing. She has so much control over the piano and her tone is absolutely intoxicating!!! Oh my
Akiko Ebi and Martha Argerich were jujors during this competition. These are the villains, they gave Kate very low marks from the very beginning. It is thanks to these people that she did not win the first place, although as we saw during the entire competition, she deserved the victory.
I know no one wants to hear about mistakes, but there were simply too many in her performance to win, regardless of whether you like her interpretation or not. It’s part of the competition.
Kate gra Chopina tak , jak wyobrażam sobie , że powinien być grany ... emocjonalnie , pięknym , delikatnym dźwiękiem i z duchowością bardzo mi bliską ... dlatego pokochałem Kate Liu .
I've listened to this over and over. She moves me like no other can, playing the same piece. She adds another dimension that others fail to do. Just my humble opinion.
A friend of mine said, among the recordings of Chopin’s E minor concerto Krystian Zimerman’s one is an „etalon”. I’ve listened to it: it’s really very good! His orchestra is the best I’ve ever heard in this piece (Zimerman was the dirigent too), much better than the Chopin competition’s orchestra. The piano part is very developed, imaginative, original, really „Polish”. It was an experience. In the case of a well-known, often played piece, the biggest problem is: what can you say new, different from the former performances? All the participants of the Chopin competition wanted to show: they can give some original, some never-heard solutions. These ideas came from their own, sometimes are good, interesting, convincing ones. They play their own Chopin. Zimerman’s interpretation is also from his own, really special, extraordinary. In case of Kate Liu, I feel she doesn’t want to do something new or „original”. She never puts something into the work. She doesn’t play from her own. But she takes her own FROM the work, her solutions are the composer’s solutions. I could tell the difference like this: Zimerman plays good, Kate Liu plays true. Others are uniform in their endeavouring to be different. Kate IS different in her being one of a kind. She was interviewed in Warsaw after the competition: how to describe her participation at Chopin competition in three words? She said: - Experience. Moment. Passion. I think this is what you can feel from her playing. Kate is a true musician.
I completely agree, the Korean pianist sounded like robot compared go her. No mistakes, they are still grading musicians as if they are kindergarten, what a disgrace.
@Ti A you think something flawless means a robot? how one-dimensional you are 😂 your disrespecting other pianists never makes Kate look better. you have to know that. she is great just the way she is. if anything your rudeness is disgracing that.
I always come back to this young lady's Chopin pieces. She must have a very beautiful soul to produce such a sincere interpretation. It really comes from the heart. :)
This young woman has that necessary combination of technique, expressiveness, clarity, grace, gentlemess and control that makes a great pianist. Her interpretation is excellent. As usual, there are those who think that playing loud, pounding the keys is artistry. There are those who think that playing faster is better. Perhaps catching the subway after the concert is most important to them. Kate is already a great pianist and will continue to grow as one in every way. I enjoyed her playing very much.
There was such a deep mutual understanding and respect between the pianist, conductor and the orchestra here. It would be an absolute dream to see Kate performing together with maestro Jacek Kaspszyk again!
Looking at the pollish conductor, one can clearly catch how much her performance was CHOPIN. It was beautiful with such subtle inspirational touch. It was genuinly soul touching.
Her unique tone.......She's reminded me of the quote in Tarkovsky's Nostalgia -- 'unspoken feelings are unforgettable'. I think Chopin would have been most proud of her emotive playing and bel canto line. For me the winner and a huge revelation.
I'm no expert at piano but really she has a sensitivity and achieves an unassuming elegance and nobility that I think may have been missed. The tough thing on the judges is that they can only listen to a performances once while we have the benefit of watching this over and over. Yes Seng Jin Cho was astonishing and I don't know which is better but everytime I listen to this rendition I find another layer of subtlety and emotion. There's something to be said about that. Well done Kate!!
I like the new one from bruce (2021) but i dispite that the altough brilliant fazioli doesnt puncture its high tones as well to penetrate the orchestra.
As a concert pianist I have to say...without a doubt ...this young lady exudes so much emotion in her interpretation , that alone would have commanded the highest marks in my opinion.Secondly , it would be obvious to anyone with a real ear for interpretation that DaVinci or Monet could not have been judged with such critical standards as have been issued in the former posts..interpretation is left up to the artist in the end ....Only those who would be able to perform this piece at this level of genius should be allowed to judge this performance ..myself included ..therefore I must grant her what she deserves ...GOLD
+yomama yodaddy she did amazing, beautifully emotionally played but Cho is the Gold. People loved her play and cho was way beyond this - its hard to explain - My friend was there whole competition. She said Kate was amazing understood why polish people loves her style but Cho won over. Cho was the big issue there everybody talked about him - I know its your opinion. Good thing is most of them remember Cho and Kate then others.
You wrote "As a concert pianist I have to say" - it follows from that, that you are a concert pianist. If you are not a concert pianist, and if you did not want to express that you were a concert pianist, then you have problem with English. And now you write "you must be blond" - you are definitely not a first class artist, you are too bumpkin for that. A first class artists, what concert pianists are, have good manners. What you apparently don't have. And you even hide, you do not post by your real name. What is your real name so we could check on you?
you are so primitive, and you don't even shame... I am wondering how old you are and what is your education level, and IQ... one thing is sure: you are not an artist and never will be one. You are a big nobody. You abuse the possibility that on the internet you can display yourself as anybody you just can imagine.
Actually, her technique is so advanced and well developed that we can't perceive. And because of that, she can focus on the musical expression of the emotions
Pianists (and musicians, at large) are gifts to our world, that make composers masterpieces, everlasting. Kate, your performance touched me. Thank you.
A magical performance. Kate will be a great champion - so far I think she is the best and the most likely to have a successful career as a soloist. The standing ovation at the end confirms her power as an artist that can attract and fill concert halls - this is what the classical world needs! Brava Kate!
Simply lovely, magical performance by a lovely young woman. The embrace between Ms. Liu and the Maestro at the conclusion is so genuine and touching! The audience is the ultimate judge and by their exuberant ovation Ms. Liu came out on top!
Kate. your music is so pure and white. It brings tears. 😭😭. thank you for sharing your most beautiful playing. i'm really glad God sends you to this world.
I ve met Kate in person after her Montreal International Competition. She has such small hands and does everything so delicate and brilliant. She is one of my favourite young pianists
Kate’s playing is poetic, easy to listen, no hard edges. What do you want from a 18 yr old ? Actually, the more I listened to her, the more I love her (playing).
What do I want from an 18 year old, you ask?? To put their cell phones down for 10 seconds and experience the world around them, along with this brilliant performance!

Kate has a special gift that is able to take human soul very high within itself, into a realm where we've always dreamt to be, but afraid to go. She leads on here familiar and there already changing paths of human emotionality. It's a thrilling yet delightful revelry. We love it. She measures it like a chef's secret ingredient, makes us love it, wanting more...but more would not be good, because less is the perfect amount that makes us wanting more... Yes Kate, I want more...

she's special, a star to shine for sure, to command as much as captivate, so fresh, felt and fine is her play, with a sensitivity and finesse that Chopin could only dream of
I think all the smiles of approval the veteran conductor gave her during the performance, and the hug afterwards tell the story. She definitely brought something special to this piece. This is my first time hearing her play, after listening to her official interview for this competition. I'll be watching for her in the future. :)

Thanks for letting me skip the orchestra part efficiently
Thanks king
She is the pianist who resonated most with the public and she also received the most perfect scores from the judges but her average was lower so third place. But I still think she was the break out star from that competition.
Born to play Chopin, I'm with the Polish viewers in my amazement that she didn't win first prize but the important thing is that she shared this music with us.
Yes she is amazing!!!
He was, and probably still is, a wonderful pianist.
pianist is not a robot
I enjoy this recording of Chopin's E minor probably more than anyone else's that I've heard....and I've been listening to this piece for almost 40 years, but I can understand why they gave the 1st prize to SJ Cho. His technical proficiency was obvious and the chances of him becoming a famous soloist is higher. With that said, Ms. Liu's performance reminds me of the way the late Van Cliburn poured his soul into every piece he played. This recording makes me emotional every time I hear it.
ケイトさんの踊るかのごとく演奏する姿、奏でる音は見ていて飽きません
My favourite interpretation. I do not know why it moves me so much, especially there are so many other talented musicians - but Kate brings eveything I love about classic music.
You notice how the audience started clapping well before the final note from the orchestra? Apparently everyone in the building was moved also! That didn't happen for the other finalists!
Still remains the most satisfying and heart wrenching performance of this concerto I’ve ever heard/seen.
Looking forward to her reaching 2 million views! 😎🎹
I'm in tears by her interpretation.... What shame she didn't win.... In my opinion still the best concerto performance in 2015
She had the audience breaking into rapturous applause even before the piece ended!
Fellow Malaysian here! Can't wait to see MPO live again and hopefully Kate some day in the future!
Another more Malaysian superfan here! I almost got to see her in Indanapolis, but she pulled out (I think due to injury). Really hoping to see her live sometime! Her Schumann is incredible ua-cam.com/video/64C4nL2VNKA/v-deo.html
!!!
still waiting till this day for her to grace her presence in Malaysia... if not Singapore (her hometown) 🥲
With a deep respect to all from that contest, this performance is certainly an outstanding one. For me personally this one was a 1st prize performance among concertos 🌸
Agree with all my heart.
心洗われるような澄みきったピアノの音 オーケストラとの自然な融合
何度観ても言葉で言い表わせない、せつない感情が湧いてきます。
I Love Your piano, waiting for you, Kate !! from Japan🎼
I came to Chopin competition videos because I started with watching Seong-Jin, but Kate's performance is amazing. She has so much control over the piano and her tone is absolutely intoxicating!!! Oh my
Haha same!

I don't know much about piano but I do know that she touched my soul and brought me to tears
Kate’s performance is mesmerizing🙏
The greatest pianist of chopin competition 2015. Compliments. The better wishes for you career
Chociaż minęło juz 6 lat ciągle pamietam Kate Liu i jej niezwykle wykonanie koncertu finałowego. Brawo! Moim zdaniem to ona była najlepsza.
I completely agree, the Korean pianist sounded like robot compared go her. No mistakes, they are still grading musicians as if they are kindergarten, what a disgrace.
@@tia904 Exactly. A robot.
@Ti A you think something flawless means a robot? how one-dimensional you are 😂
your disrespecting other pianists never makes Kate look better. you have to know that.
she is great just the way she is. if anything your rudeness is disgracing that.
Kate made the superbe interpretation and performance! Thank you for her deep touching playing.
I always come back to this young lady's Chopin pieces. She must have a very beautiful soul to produce such a sincere interpretation. It really comes from the heart. :)
Same here.
Absolutely stunning performance ❤ Congratulations from Aotearoa New Zealand 🇳🇿
어떻게 이렇게 한음한음 잘 들릴까. 또랑또랑하게~
그리고 리듬감이 너무 좋네요~~
섬세함도 말할것도 없구요.
Już się nie mogę doczekać...kolejnego KONKURSU😁👍🌹

This is truly one of the best playing of this masterpiece I ever heard! This girl deserves golden award! 👍

+ADGO Fingers-crossed. I'm giving up all pretense of being impartial. GO KATE!!!
Hey ADGO, thx for uploads the kissin plays op10 and op25 etude ! ! !
U just inspired me, and now i very very very LOVE MUSIC ! ! ! !
Elegant. What could be better.
I'm writing in!
Unspoken feelings are unforgettable... It is now my favorite quote!! Ty
Piękne wykonanie Kate. Dla nas byłaś najlepsza (Beautiful performance by Kate. You were the best for us) - polska publiczność (Polish audience).
videos like this are a gift to mankind
+yomama yodaddy If you are a concert pianist for real, why do you post by a phantom name? i do not believe you.
What is your real name so we could check on you?
wow ..please ..not another piano snob....sounds like you blew a gasket...should I call you a "waaambulance" ?
you are so primitive, and you don't even shame... I am wondering how old you are and what is your education level, and IQ... one thing is sure: you are not an artist and never will be one. You are a big nobody. You abuse the possibility that on the internet you can display yourself as anybody you just can imagine.
Her total absorption in the music is mesmerising. We are drawn into it together with her.
note the standing ovation at the end, truly a brilliant performance
She teaches us that its not about techniques. Its about the emotions and the soul. Beautiful work of art.
How beautifully expressedvJune Man
Actually, her technique is so advanced and well developed that we can't perceive. And because of that, she can focus on the musical expression of the emotions
I like her (third place) mor than 1st place
@@chirapolchowchuen9099 yes, I agree, she is wonderfully special.

The standing ovation towards the end is testament to her excellent performance.
I love the way she slightly delays the notes between 5:42 and 5:45, making it sound much more romantic and heartbroken...
She knocks on each note and phrase to allow me to feel all of them. She takes time and waits for me to understand it. Steadily and considerably.
Brava Kate!
About me she is the best, the First Prize Winner, no doubt!!!
this was the first live performance of this piece giving me goosebumps! awesome performance of this masterpiece I love so much.
Mistakes are inevitable but tensions she creates are beautiful and emotional and nostalgic
가끔 연주자들이 신들린 연주를 할때가 있는데... 처음의 늘어진 연주보다 후반부로 갈수록 점점 텐션 오르는 연주가 빠져들게 했던... 후반부는 넋을 잃고 들었네요
Such a pure, clear tone and beautiful emotional phrasing. This is what piano playing is about
Two years later and I still keep coming back to this performance when I want to listen to this concerto.
Really? Her Hands look really big on the video
Kate’s playing is poetic, easy to listen, no hard edges.
What do you want from a 18 yr old ?
Actually, the more I listened to her, the more I love her (playing).

Kate has a special gift that is able to take human soul very high within itself, into a realm where we've always dreamt to be, but afraid to go. She leads on here familiar and there already changing paths of human emotionality. It's a thrilling yet delightful revelry. We love it. Piękne, dla mnie: "the winner is..Kate Liu!"
she's special, a star to shine for sure, to command as much as captivate, so fresh, felt and fine is her play, with a sensitivity and finesse that Chopin could only dream of
Beautiful wording ;)
I think all the smiles of approval the veteran conductor gave her during the performance, and the hug afterwards tell the story. She definitely brought something special to this piece. This is my first time hearing her play, after listening to her official interview for this competition. I'll be watching for her in the future. :)
