  • EMD-equipped locomotives pulling freight and passenger trains as they cross the arctic circle at the Saltfjellet mountain area, Norway. Recorded on February 19, 2013. The temperature was at about -18°C (0°F) at noon, but fell to -20°C (-4°F) during the afternoon as the sun disappeared behind a mountain.
This video shows the following locomotives/trains:
    - RailCare type T68 (Vossloh Euro 4000, EMD 16-710), northbound, hauling a CargoNet freight trein.
    - NSB Di 4 653 (EMD 16-645), southbound passenger train.
    - NSB D i4 654 (EMD 16-645), northbound passenger train, climbing, nice sound.
    - Di 3 616 (EMD 16-567), southbound. This old locomotive is owned by the Norwegian Railroad Museum and is pulling a train belonging to the Norwegian National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket). Not in regular service, this train was a part of a special event.
    - CargoNet type CD 312 (Vossloh Euro 400, EMD 16-710) hauling a northbound freight train as the daylight fades.

This is such a beautiful position to film trains!
    Absolutely great video!
    And respect for enduring -20°C!

Amazing landscape, awesome location. Winter at its best plus the freight train make a perfect combination together. Well done and cheers from Poland!

Stunning beauty - brilliant. Thank you for suffering for your art so we can enjoy these spectacular images. I've just visited (summer 2015) and I know how remote it is up there. I love the length of the shots and the use of the sound to anticipate the arrival of the trains.

Chris H Thanks, glad you liked it. Listening to the sound is definitely a part of the experience if you ask me.

What a beautiful video !!! Specially liked the the third train and the train with the museumloco (NoHab). I passed the Arctic Circle this summer but had only one hour time to spent up there. Didn't see any train. Thank you for uploading this video !

Imponerende kvalitet på kameraet, og veldig effektfullt særlig på toget som passerer fra ca 3 minutter til 5 minutter. Blir faktisk spennende å sitte og vente på at det kommer forbi!

PeterNGloor, no, the MaK/Siemens-built NSB Di 6 / ME 6 / DE 2700 which I guess you are referring to does not appear in this video.
    veedub198909, it's a Canon Legria HF G10 with a Canon DM-100 microphone. And a dead cat. :-)
    Thanks for watching.

It´s really great to watch this impressing landscape and listen to the sound of the EMD-machines.

I cannot even conceive -18 Celsius (having more than +35 in Athens these days).
How did you survive this waiting for the trains? Or did you use remote control for the cameras?
At any rate, many thanks for sharing this video with us!

togotog, I will be in the region between Bodø and Trondheim in February and want to do some railroad photography. Where is this location? Is it on Saltfjellveien and, if so, how much hiking from the highway? Thank you. Great video.

    • @togogtog
      @togogtog  5 років тому

Thanks Jody. Yes, this is near the Saltfjellveien main road (E6), just a five minute walk west of the The Arctic Circle Centre ("Polarsirkelsenteret"), where you may park your car. Walk a few minutes along a gravel road in a NW direction, then cross the river over a small wooden bridge. While you can walk anywhere on the snow and ice, the road and bridge (both probably covered by snow) leads you to the former Arctic Circle Station, which is a spot where you may legally cross the railway tracks. Good luck!
