Well...that was interesting...... I travelled the whole line to Alexandra in the railcar in mid 1965... same year another Scout friend and I got off at Little Mt Allan... tramped up to a farm where we were allowed to stay overnight in shearers' quarters, then next day over the hills to the Silverstream Valley Next year 3 of us tramped from ( the late )Green Hut , down the Devils Staircase to stay in Christmas Creek hut, then next morning along with 3 OBHS prefects whom my companions knew,, a wet and muddy slog out to Hindon station to get the railcar back to Dunedin.... Great to see that part of the country again.
Awesome video. loved the scenery and the old bridges. The trip back was really cool and I had my headphones on full blast and the DJ engines sound really good. DJ locomotive definitely my favorite freight train and it's nice to see it running
Glad you enjoyed the video mate, As much as I did finally after all these years getting to film that train. I have always had a soft spot for the DJ class locomotives, Have done for years since I was a kid. Nothing beats that lovely Southerner blue colour scheme they wear.
A great video and a great trip, definitely something I’m keen to do one day as the scenery is fantastic, my parents did this trip about 24 years or so ago now I think.
That trip is definitely well worth doing, And apparently Dunedin railways are going to run this all the way up to Pukerangi again, So you should get to experience even more of the gorge. They have a good selection of other trips as well that they do, I was looking at them when I was down there, So I have my eye on some other trips right now as well, So definitely want to do more with them.
The full length of this railway for the Dunedin Railway train tours would’ve put a great deal to the network, but the section between Middlemarch and Cromwell has been converted into a rail trail in the 1980s…
I was thinking about that myself, What travelling to Cromwell or Cyde would have been like. Funny enough Dunedin railways just announced literally after doing this that they are going to start running trains to Pukerangi once more, So now people will experience even more of the gorge. Still want to go to Oamaru though, So might make a final decision on that next week and start booking something.
Hope they go right back to Middlemarch some time soon. We will book that trip for sure if they re-instate that run. Missed out using the Otago Central Line in 1974 on the old Railpass days. PICTON, South Island.
@Phil-oj5nr I think it's possible that Dunedin Railways could return to Middlemarch in the near future again, But we will have to wait and see. I too would consider doing that journey again if they do extend their journeys back up that far. Currently on their social media I see they are doing track work beyond Hindon, So things are looking promising there.
