Paul Whitehouse was in a sketch show on the BBC called The Fast Show.
One of his many characters was a drunk old man who told stories that were basically unintelligible and therefore hilarious his catchphrase was "I was very, very drunk at the time".
One episode out of nowhere he told a super sad story about a lost love, my whole family was watching and you could have heard a pin drop he sold the sadness so well, my mum had to get a tissue to get something out of her eye.
He is a very underrated actor in my opinion.
The clip is on UA-cam and its called Rowley Brikin - Sad story, brace yourself if you watch it, he gives what I think is his best performance ever.

I think those two clips just set the characters up, and yes they are (intentionally) horrid. Which makes what happens to them in some future sketches so good. Check out _Considerably Richer Than You (Hotel Owner)_ and _Stanley and Pammy's Lottery Win_ for example.
Also, check out the Self Righteous Brothers, two more great characters with Harry and Paul. There's a whole bunch of them out there.

It’s a comedy, not to be taken too seriously and it’s absolutely fine not to like it you’re entitled to your opinion. It’s usually people who have had nothing and through either luck or hard work they have a 3 bedroom house rather that a 2 bedroom one and they do rub it in to family members as if they are stinking rich and often they are so poor that all they have is money! 😂

To put it in context, the two characters play working class people who happen to get a little financial success...and it got to their head.
To emphasise their working class background, they were made to come from the same town as Ozzy Osbourne... Birmingham...hence the "Brummie" accent.

Your 'turtle neck' is a 'polo neck' in the UK although many younger British and Irish people may not know that either, as they tend to use both interchangeably today? It can become confusing when buying American clothing too as your sizing is different to ours, usually far bigger for some reason or another? Check it out?

What do the British call a turtleneck?
This type of sweater is called a turtleneck in the US and a Polo neck jumper in the UK. Wearing a turtleneck is a good way to keep your neck warm during cold days. The collar usually consists of a double-folded fabric, making it extra insulating.
Itchy though I used to or maybe still own a yellow one.

We call them turtlenecks too. EDIT: We also have rollnecks which are even longer with more material, so need to be rolled down a lot. Like having a thick in built scarf in a garment. 🇬🇧

When people from Birmingham say "the other" they contract it to "t'other" so he said "t'other a mere pauper" or something along those lines.

@KingBoomer 2:39 he says "an' t'other an'umble pauper" it's a Yorkshire dialect (even though for some reason they're speaking with a scouse/liverpool accent in this sketch) where "the" is abbreviated into a "t" at the beginning of the word that follows it. What he said in plain English was "and the other, a humble pauper" implying she is poor, or without quality of life.

    • @surfury
