Dermot Morgan, the actor who played Ted, died of a heart attack the day after they wrapped filming on the final episode of Father Ted. He was only 45. 😢 This year marked the 25th anniversary of his passing. 🙏 There’s a memorial to him somewhere in Merrion Square in Dublin.
Edit: You should see Dermot’s other work like The Live Mike, Father Trendy, Scrap Saturday, Thank You Very Very Much, Mr. Eastwood (music video) and his stand up performances (on UA-cam).
Edit: Frank Kelly (played Father Jack) died exactly 18 years after Dermot did.
Edit: If Dermot were alive today he’d be in his early seventies.

The original ending of this episode was a lot darker. Ted finds himself back at the same window from the beginning with Kevin preparing to jump, only this time instead of talk him down, Ted asks him to move over, implying he's resigned himself to being stuck on the island forever and also intends to commit suicide.
Dermot Morgan, who played Ted, suddenly and tragically passed away the day after filming of the series had ended. Since they didn't find the suicide ending funny anyway, and as a tribute to Dermot (it's actually a common misconception the show was cancelled because he died, but this isn't true,) the creators changed it to a montage of all the funniest moments across the show, with the final ending implying life simply goes on for Ted.

Also bittersweet is the ‘Small, Far Away’ documentary about Father Ted. There are also a couple of documentaries about Dermot Morgan’s life and career prior to Father Ted as a comedian / satirist in Ireland on radio and tv there, his triumphs and his frustrations. Father Ted was going to be the stepping stone to other things he hoped to do now he’d achieved stardom, but it ended up being the apex of his career - and not a bad one. RIP Dermot Morgan.

The writers were not happy with this ending even before dermots passing, but i feel his death certified the killing of that ending. I’ve watched all of your Fr Ted reactions, and I just wanted to say thank you! Well done for getting to the end. Was great watching you guys appreciate it as much as we did originally.
I don’t mind admitting, I was crushed when it ended. I’d been living in Moscow when the final season aired, and I’d come back with an acute case of depression (it wasn’t a pleasant experience!). My dad had taped the entire final season whilst I was away, so on my first night home, I watched the entire lot, thinking it would cheer me up. At the end of the last episode, I think I wept for a solid hour. Of course, I’d heard about Dermot Morgan passing whilst I was abroad, and the sadness of it hit me like a wave. Watching them back now though has brought a smile to my face from beginning to end. 😁
That final montage, by the way, features a scene from every episode in every season. It was the perfect way to end it.
Also, ‘Kevin’ the suicidal priest is, is played by a well known Irish stand up comedian, Tommy Tiernan. He’s great. There’s a clip of him here in action that’s well worth a reaction!!

I loved the ending to Father Ted. It was so perfect, and some contentment can be found in it. Even though Ted is doomed to spend the rest of his life on Craggy Island with Dougal, Jack and Mrs. Doyle, and none of his dreams will come true…there is solace to be found in being part of a strange family in a forever barmy, yet familiar place.
And for the showrunners to recap the entire series in a montage with a beautiful rendition of the Father Ted…it’s a perfect tribute to Dermot Morgan and really hits home what an amazing show it was.

The ending, as originally filmed, had Ted about to throw himself out of the window rather than face life with Jack and Dougal on Craggy Island. It was then decided that this wouldn’t be a good way to end the show so they did the montage instead. Before location filming on the third and final series of Father Ted, Morgan underwent a mandatory medical examination in which he was found to have high blood pressure, and was prescribed medication. On 28 February 1998, one day after recording the series' final episode, Morgan suffered a heart attack while hosting a dinner party at his home in London's Hounslow area, at which the Scottish musician Jim Diamond was present. He was rushed to hospital, but died soon afterward. He was 45 years old.
Morgan's sister Denise said "He wasn't feeling great at the end of the meal and I went to the bedroom with him. He had a heart attack, and I didn't recognise it. From my limited training in first aid, I wasn't sure exactly what was happening. The symptoms didn't match what the books said. I said to him 'I think you are okay' and we went back to the table. He apologised for having left the room and the next thing he just collapsed. We tried to resuscitate him but it didn't work." Father Ted co-star Frank Kelly said "Dermot's mind was mercurial. I think he was a kind of comedic meteor. He burned himself out."

45:21 When Covid first hit I found a custom mask manufacturer and got the Father Ted 'Careful Now / Down With This Sort Of Thing' banners printed on it. £30 for 10 washable masks but well worth it :D

You should watch Derry Girls. The actor playing the suicidal priest plays a main character. In the final episode of Derry Girls, the actor playing Dougal has a part in the final episode.

I think you guys would really enjoy a sketch show called Big Train. It was broadcast on the BBC shortly after Father Ted ended it’s run, it had the same writers as Father Ted and featured some of the funniest comic actors around at the time (including Mark Heap, Kevin Eldon, Amelia Bullmore and a very young Simon Pegg!). The sketches were completely absurd (such as a Wild West shootout between Chaka Khan and the Bee Gees). I think you guys would have a blast watching it, and would love to see your reactions to it 😂

Loved going on this Ted journey with you King and Queen B. This show was important to me in the first lockdown. Was it just me that got a bit tearful? The IT Crowd is a ballbustingly funny and quite surreal in a good way sitcom in a cracking sitcom setting. You will love it.

I heartily recommend the 1988 Irish action film 'Taffin'. Starring a young Pierce Brosnan (in between Remington Steele and Bond) as Mark Taffin, a handsome yet brooding tough guy debt-collector/local hero. It also features several of the cast members of Father Ted - Frank Kelly (Father Jack) is, ironically, the landlord of the local pub; Gerard McSorley (the impostor Todd Unctious) is Taffin's best mate, and Father Ted himself, Dermot Morgan, is the MC introducing strippers at the local nightclub. It's a cracking little film and often overlooked.

The writers did think about making a 4th series even before they had made the final series but then they felt that if they did they would have started to repeat what they had already done, Dermot Morgan died at a house party several days after this final episode, had that not have happened they might have made a millennium special or something.
Speaking of which if you wanted to make up a happy but also sad ending for Father Ted here's mine: A few years after the final episode Ted, Dougal and Mrs Doyle woke up on January 1st 2000 to find that Jack had passed away and this time they got the money he had previously left them in the will and they decided to leave the parish and move to America. Bishop Brennan tries to refuse it but they black mail him with the video tape of him and his son, so they leave the parish and move to America, they take Mrs Doyle with them and live happily ever after!

I’ve seen every episode of Father Ted a dozen times. But only just now have I noticed that the very first line in this episode has a priest introducing Ted to “Father Brian Eno”, along with a brief cameo by Brian Eno himself.

The sad song on the bus was by a band called Radiohead. Most of their music was like that. I remember once a reviewer where writing about one of their new albums said it was the best album in the world to commit suicide to! So they knew where going playing that one on the bus.

Balance of happy and sad. Well done queen that’s how traditional Irish music is played . A sad song is always followed by riotous song and before you get to riotous they pull ya back down with some beautiful sadness. Beautiful sadness writing those words just reminded me of our beautiful Sinead o Conner who we lost yesterday, may her soul finally find peace.

I haven't read through 600 comments, but Father Brian Eno is THE Brian Eno who played keyboards for Roxy Music and co-produced David Bowie's trilogy of Berlin albums, invented the term "ambient music" and has done loads else, so it's nice to see him spending 2 seconds in a Father Ted episode just for the hell of it.
