I've spent some time with the new 5th-gen iPad Air, which comes with the same M1 processor as the MacBook Air. Does that now make the iPad Air a suitable alternative? The answer may surprise you.

#iPadAir #M1 #MacBookAir #LaptopReplacement #iPad #MacBook #Apple #Versus #DigitalTrends #Computing #iPadAir5thGen - Наука та технологія
Hey everyone! Quick note - While the graphic at 0:25 says iPad Mini, this video is definitely focused on the new M1 iPad Air. Sorry for any confusion! While you're here, let us know - Do you plan on picking up the new M1 iPad Air? Why or why not? We'd love to hear your opinions!
The drift you talk about in the video is probably due to cursor inertia being on. Try turning it off.
Yes. Getting an iPad Air. Liked and subbed.
There is another use case that applies to me. The worker who gets supplied with a corporate laptop also needs a personal device. The iPad with a keyboard and mouse is excellent. Now and again, I need the laptop capabilities for personal use. To ensure my employer has no visibility of my private life, I use my own devices to organise my personal life. My employer has a policy that you can't bring a personal laptop to work, but you can bring a personal tablet. The iPad with a keyboard almost completely replaces the need to have a laptop for personal use, which would be the case for many people. As I'm not a natural writer, I use the Grammarly iPad app to write content, which allows me to edit the content on the fly. If Apple could add true monitor docketing capabilities, then I could genuinely use the iPad as a laptop replacement in my personal life.
This is exactly my situation! I have a 2018 pro and eying up an M1 for stage manager and as you say keeping my personal device.
Great comparison! Real quick, the “drift” you were mentioning on the iPad cursor, can actually be turned off in settings. It can be found under Accessibility>Pointer Control>Trackpad Inertia. Just disable “Trackpad Inertia” and the cursor will behave like normal.
Thanks for that. It was really helpful!!
this was really helpful thank you
Apple really should just ditch iPadOS and put full-fat MacOS on its tablets. At this point it's just unnecessary fragmentation, and limits the functionality of iPads significantly.
I would hate that, and hope Apple never does that. You like Mac OS? Get a MacBook Air. IPad OS is perfect for its form factor. My art apps visibly use the power and RAM so no regrets for the M1 iPad Pro.
@@sloppynyuszi well everyone's not an artist!
Exactly! But they aren't productivity oriented, so think of it as money minded decision!
It depends on our needs, yeah I do acknowledge it as a teacher using both iphone and ipad air. It worked like a charm to me in the classroom.😊
For me, the big thing is not being locked down to a tablet OS.
Thank you for helping me choose!
whatd you get?
Great details and then I realize this is a year old. So is there a newer and updated version of this review?
You keep reiterating the A13 Bionic chip on the previous IPad Air, which is incorrect. iPad Air 4 has the A14 Bionic chip. A13 is available on the base iPad model.
Wonder if the decision changes with stage manager and full external monitor support for ipad air…
The iPad Air feels awkward to type on versus the Surface Pro 8 to me, the Magic Keyboard isn't as flexible either. If you're not doing intensive still to take advantage of the M1, then the Surface Pro 8 is also a great alternative. (Xbox Game Pass is also a thing that's perfect for the form factor, better for video conferencing too)
I have a windows laptop…and a regular basic iPad …..the laptop sits in a drawer…the iPad is attached to my hip basically. I just ran some updates on my laptop…windows 10….not all the updates went thru…I spent an hour and a half on that laptop just trying to do basic maintenance. When I turn on the iPad it’s responds immediately and I get to where I want to go in a snap….the laptop takes about 5-10 mins to boot up…..unless I get a a MacBook I’m not doing laptops anymore.
Picked up a 3rd gen Air when they were released. It does everything I wanted it to do, though I had hoped Apple would improve iOS (now iPadOS) on tablets. Sadly, it still feels very clunky, especially multitasking. I'm not sure Apple is ever going to deliver an OS worthy of their tablet hardware.
The only thing I would choose an iPad over a MacBook is the 5g connectivity.
I love my iPad Pro M1 11’ but wished I went bigger. My previous iPad Pro was the 12.9”. Especially when you using it like a laptop. Apple’s Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is overpriced by $100 or more but it’s amazing for the functionality it brings. Even though I miss MacOS. I can get all my stuff done on an iPad.
What “stuff” are you referring to? I have the iPad Air 5th Gen.
I like the iPads flexibility. I have a desktop so the iPad supplements that perfectly.
A14 not A13 in the previous AIR
I love my m1 MacBook Air. I wouldn’t even consider using an iPad for a replacement
Do you recommend the iPad Air instead of the Macbook Air for students in college? Planning to buy but im torn right now since what I really need is one thats convinient and accessible using only for school activities (taking notes, zoom/google meetings, minimal edit on pics/vids for school reqs) cause files like docs, ppts or excels can be save on google drives now.. really hoping for your advice🙏🏻
i have the same question
Following this
I am going to b honest, I have both devices and I say that MacBook Air would probably be a safer bet because u can just do more like transfer files easier as well as a big enough screen so that your backpack will be able to fit
@@itzjustjeremyasia567 thank you! this really helped!
Isn’t this a comparison of the iPad Air vs Mac book? Why does it show in the beginning of the video “review of iPad mini”
Hi! Video editor Dan here - That was a mistake on my end, but this video is definitely focused on the iPad Air, not the iPad mini.
They need to have iPad Pro with MacOSx
Software support is way more important. iOS is always fluid, but the limitations of iOS are generally annoying or a bit artificial. For example, you can now extend displays and use a sort of "desktop" mode called stage manager.
iPad is more casual, no commitment, like a phone. MacBook is a computer, larger, bulkier, for doing real work. And do you need the MacBook Air? May be, but everyone benefit from using a Mac book. A snapper, better, longtime use computer, that act as a larger iPhone. It just works.
I m lost with this iPadOS air M1 as it doesn’t help to install Cisco packet tracer application and also no choice for UTM or ALSTORE to take that way.regret now
I would have chosen an iPad over a MacBook back in Feb 2022, but the reasons I went for the MacBook were coding, file transfer to Android, using external storage devices and video editing (which was made convenient by the Touchbar on MacBook Pro 13)
Great video
@3:40 A14, not A13
This review focused on treating them both like a laptop even though one is a tablet. Will there be a contrasting follow-up video where they’re both treated like a tablet even though one is a laptop? For example, walking around a worksite to take pictures and write some notes during an inspection? Or using AR to diagnose and repair heavy equipment?
that's a very very very niche use casr
now final cutpro and logic pro avaible
Ive the ipad pro 10.5 from 2017. Thinking of getting a new ipad or a macbook. M1 still more than enough for me. I use my device mostly for media but contemplating studying in my spare time. Not sure what to do.
So what did you really go for ? Even I am confused between the two.
@@-With-Me- still on my 2017 ipad. Decided to use it for another while
iPad Pro 11 here I come.
Currently using an iPad for classes and I’m looking at getting a MacBook Air instead
For me apps is actually the reason I prefer the iPad over the mackbook. Primarily a leisure device. Apart from MS office ipad better for me
im just telling you guys that, ‘baseus’ doesn’t have mfi sertificate 🙏🏻
Think I'd rather have a Surface Pro 8.
You can find old Zune music players too instead of an Apple product. Available in brown!!! 💩 Good luck!
@@scottwallace1 I'm an apple guy now, but let's not pretend that the iPod was superior to the Zune.
Ipad is great for entertainment and light work, but im sorry i will use my macbook for any “real” work
It just more convenient, as ipad is not really multitasking friendly and no way can actually replace macbook, at least for now
Thats why i prefer the basic or the air version only instead of invested on the pro version
But ipad is just so good for entertainment, which is why i reaching for ipad a lot more than my mac 😂
Why would you leave macos for ios????
In my conclusion ipads are for different kinds of artists and designers type of prople and macbook for skillful professional work experience
Most certainly. True ARTISTE.👨🎨🎩😂
A touch screen on the laptop is not a good idea as I wouldn't like to wipe the screen clean few times a day.
99% of the time, the laptop lid is closed, and the HDMI cable to my external monitor is plugged into my laptop. In the cases where I tend to use the laptop touch screen, the tablet is the better form factor. To me, the touch screen on a laptop is overrated.
Yeah, maybe change it when your opening graphic has nothing to do with what you’re actually talking about. How do things like that get past a review (I’m presuming that as a professional, you review your work before publishing)? Also, thank you for the actual video content :)
Digital Trends acknowledged the title mistake in the opening pinned comment. Mistake by the producers. They owned up to it!
if u have a job that requires you to be productive, you basically need a MacBook. If you have all the time in the world then get an iPad
I'm a full-time cooma, so I need iPad.
Ipad pro/air cant defeat macbook air beacause of macos 😂
The iPad Pro will never replace the Mac with its limiting software. For real work you need a Mac. For light “productivity” you may get away with an iPad.
it depends on what your opinion of "real work" is.
@@MR-pt7ou exactly. Every device is suited for different professional use.
Yup you're right. Everyone else is just lying to themselves
@@MR-pt7ou real work is defined as running multiple businesses that actually produce real income in the 7 and 8 figures
I hate how the magic keyboard has loose fabric around the spine it looks awful.
ipad is nowhere near what you can do on macbook
I use Canva and pages only heheheh
