Bernstein´s recording is one of the worst imo. Completely loses the the subtleties of the piece in favor of just speed and chaos. Even the performance of the orchestra itself is severely lacking with bad intonation and things. The 2014 recording with London symphony orchestra and I think it was Maxim Shostakovich conducting is way better imo.

Shostakovich is actually a relatively popular 20th century composer and his 5th symphony is arguably his most popular and easily listenable composition...
Grant Darnell It's a forced finale with a mocking tone at times, the dissonance throughout the movement adds to the feeling of something not being right as if the orchestra and music is being forced, much like a forced march. Shostakovich did this as a sort of hidden protest against soviet oppression and censor and is lucky the Soviets didn't see that or he would've been disappeared.
Is there any actual evidence that he wrote it as a "hidden protest?" Like I get that it's a nice idea and there was that book that claimed all those things, but I'm pretty sure it's been thoroughly discredited since then. Also like that would be monumentally stupid, considering he had relatively recently pulled his 4th symphony (a far more avant-garde work) from its premier because of its modernist qualities.
@@trombonegamer14 Really. I think it's a great disservice to musicology that anti-Soviet takes of music are seemingly accepted without a whiff of evidence. While I understand that it supports the governing regime, these sorts of takes (when unsupported) completely undermine the field of study if it turns out to be nothing but propaganda.
