I imagine that a lot of people hearing Rhapsody in Blue all the way through for the first time would be surprised to learn that several pieces they recognize from movies, TV shows, etc., all in fact happen to be from the same piece.
It surprising common that is for many ballads and older pieces of music. In a different realm its like Tchaikovsky whose prolific library is found all over the place with no association to the original composer.
The best part is that this isn't just a novelty, these instruments actually capture the feeling of this piece well; for example, the up-and-down chords at 1:34 sound like a train, which is _exactly_ what Gershwin intended.
@@asukalangleysoryu6695 it's a pocket trumpet, those sounds horrible, also his embouchure really gives it away. I don't think you need to play trumpet to realize that
Evan Romito his embouchure is good and all his fingering is correct, and with a Harmon mute you really can’t tell the difference in tone between pocket and regular trumpets
The really amazing thing is that they stripped a piece designed to be performed by a full symphony orchestra and a damn talented solo pianist down to two melodicas with a brief trumpet piece...and I don’t feel that it lacks for anything!
I don't have one so I don't know, but it looks like he is manipulating the pitch with his mouth like he's whistling. I know you can do it with an harmonica-maybe it's the same?
Obviously not the whole piece, but from 5:07 to the end at least the guy on the left is. At 5:13 ish you can see his cheeks puff out with him still sustaining that note, which is indicative of circular breathing.
Austin Lan I think you're right. Ever try sustaining a big chord like that for that long on a melodica? I have and it takes loads of air. I'd guess the guy on the left doesnt have big enough lungs to do that without circular breathing
It doesn't take a lot of air to sound a melodica but at the same time there isn't much back pressure so you can get very soft sounds very easy and hold louder sounds for really long. Also, no air flows through the instrument if there aren't any keys pressed, so they get a lot of chances to breathe. They can take a tiny breath between staccato notes if they want.
Exactly what I was going to say. The phrasing is incredibly long throughout, especially with the larger chords. I bought a melodic a a few months ago, and even a regular triad is difficult to sustain for more than a few seconds. They go through several bars unphased.
What does that mean for those who are not into inner-city slang? I learned the the Queens English and do not understand the word homies, and I do not mean that as a racist blur. I am just curios, peace out LOL.
Kjelly Lund homies basically means friend and it is more commonly used among black people but it’s not a racial slur or anything like that. Frankly, it’s common enough here that I’m actually a little surprised you don’t know it. We really are “two countries separated by a common language” 😂

I agree and if this is how classical music and other styles that are less popular with the youth can live on on the internet, then I could definitely live with that
Love this. Starts out looking comedic but quickly this turns into a serious performance. Fun, of course, exactly as intended by Gerschwin. I bet he would have loved it!
To me either. But I dont really know how he did this. Maybe by blowing so much air in the melodica? (Cause it seems like he has to work a lot.) I would try it myself but evryone around me is sleeping so Ill better wait😁
I first heard Gershwin`s Rhapsody in Blue in Disney`s Fantasia 2000 (where they animated it, still the image that I think when I hear this piece), then it blew my mind that it can be arranged for other instruments when it was played in Nodame Cantabile, then finally I come here, where they played it all on two melodicas. Wait what. A glissando on a melodica? Yeah. I guess it's a similar technique to the clarinet glissando in the original? I didn't know that was possible on a melodica.
Hah hah, same... and the vibrato? Or better yet the de-tuned notes like you can do on a harmonica. I didn't think that would be even possible on the melodica.😮👍
