- The last time I bought a cheap "John Cooper Works" it wasn't at all. It was just an S with the JCW Aero package. This time I finally picked up a REAL John Cooper Works R56 Mini for far more money, but I might have overpaid. I don't know what's wrong with it yet but it has some serious problems.

Oil filter housing gasket. Worst design ever. That also isn't a stock JCW exhaust. They should have twin round with JCW logo embossed. The transmission is unique to the JCW with larger input shaft so clutch and flywheel are totally different from Cooper S

If the VIN confirms it is a real JCW, then it’s worth repairing. If it is a Frankenstein S/fake JCW then part it out and recoup your money.
Scrap it and never speak of this again ......

Front wiring harness is easy to replace. Plus with how easy it is to pull the front on these it should be easy to fix.

As a British man who has owned plenty jcw Mini Cooper S across all chassis code, I’d say the only thing on that car that’s JCW is the brembos. That car is a normal mini S with jcw parts added. You’ve been scammed heavily

There is potential for the mini. There easy to work on. Don’t forget to do a walnut service. That might help with the leak down test.

Wow. I've come to know my R55 pretty well, having done quite a bit of maintenance. Certain things bother me about my car and I'm always trying to rectify small little things, but this car makes mine look MINT. I say you fix it. Start swapping connectors. Im not so sure about the input shaft being different but I havent googled deep enough. There's really not that much different though, a couple sensors, rods, pistons, tune.
JR, next car you plan to buy, get it on a Jack before you pay!

My 95 Neon blew the rear main and it would use a quart to work and a quart back plus puddles at each stop. Found a shop that replaced it for 300 bucks. Best money I ever spent vs doing it in my driveway in feb years ago. Hopefully it salvageable but it has good parts i spose if nothing else. Hoping for the best for you.
Probably threw in $50 worth of stop leak, changed the oil and gave it back knowing the engine will blow before it starts leaking again 😂
No, he actually replaced the seal and it never leaked from the main again. It had about 160k on it and still ran good till almost 190k when it tossed the timing belt. It needed paint and a door hinge mounting point was damaged bad enough I couldn't aline the drivers door properly after I replaced it so figured time to walk away.

@@commonsenseisdeadin2024 I tried the fix in a can, didn't work. Owner of the shop said he thought the oil pan was leaking but he would do whatever it needed. He said when he started taking it apart the rear seal almost fell out but it took him a couple of hours so he only charged me 300 like I was quoted at another shop😁
I just noticed a bunch of cheap Mini's near me for sale. One is in great shape but needs an engine, seems a common thread. I got room to store them till pickup JR...

The cooper s eaither had limited slip option and it was also available with out it! But the cooper s trans will bolt right in to the jcw i went through a few with mine! And the cooper s and also the clubman trans both fot that

JCW’s are indeed completely different it took over 4 months from order to shipment to the US when i ordered mine in 2006. By the way you want a spicy exhaust just remove the in line resonator….lots of pops and crackles after that ….when you get on it anyway.

That mini looks like a car my neighbor's kid would have. Literally the first thing he does to any car is take a cutoff wheel to the muffler. But he completely removes it. 😂 He even convinced his Sisto let he cut hers off. 😂
I was at a traffic light yesterday, behind a Cooper S, and I noticed the rear window wiper. I would describe it as having an Eric Wiper Arm (beefy), and a John Ross Wiper Blade (wimpy). Nerds Rule! =P
I said yesterday the bolt on the battery terminal bolt hold down being broke was sign of what the rest of the car was going fro be like

Oil filter housing cracked or gasket is bad. I rebuild my JCW engine three times before it got totaled. Love/ hate! Taking the front end off was a 2 HR job the first time. Could probably do it in 10 min now. Called my dealer just to check, the transmissions have two completely different part numbers according to them. Don’t know how different they really are.

No it’s you oil filter housing seal.. just replace mine a few weeks ago on my 09 jcw clubman with is basically the same car as yours. Not a very hard job to do

My 11 JCW was the valve stem seal, every thousand miles it used a quart of oil.
According to GM that oil condition is completely acceptable for a brand new car!

I’d say warped head from overheating is where to find the oil leak.
I don’t think that’s the factory JCW exhaust as that’s not what my JCW exhaust looked like. And I’m pretty sure the engine is the exact same between JCW and the S models but the injectors, turbo, exhaust and intake are different.
It's pretty bad when I would want the mower more than any of the MINIs in the shop.... and I'm a "Mini Guy" (I own 5, 3 are JCWs) - I wouldn't touch the one you have with a 10-foot pole....

i have a 2010 r55 jcw 100%stock, i may sell. like 50k miles. laser blue. 6speed. legit. 1 dent in rear quarter from neighbor. bangs and pops.very clean
For a cooper S from 2007-2010 is 172hp and for JCW is 208HP!
Though the rebuild would be fun content, probably best to part that turd out.
