How to make stone ruins tabletop terrain

- In this video I'll show you how I make stone ruins entirely out of XPS foam. I'll also show you my favourite way of painting better stone walls. These walls can be kept unglued to remain modular. Perfect for smaller tabletop scatter terrain or combined to create a larger structure.

Last night we used some of your techniques to build stone walls and paint some ruins! They came out great and all the players in our campaign participated and it was definitely a bonding experience for everyone!

Great video and great build. One thing on a ruined building like this it is a bit weird that all bricks are in one piece unharmed ;-)
Trying this today! Going to go through a lot of black paint it seems. I'm guessing spray painting wouldn't work as well due to all the recesses
Good luck! If you're using spray paint, make sure it's foam-safe. The propellent in normal spray paint chews through foam. Test it out on a scrap piece before trying it on your build.
Getting into the wargaming hobby and found this video! Awesome work and great walkalong! I do have a question about the thickness of foam you are using I assume this if 1/2" thick foam. FOR THE ALGORITHM :)!
Hi Johnathun, welcome to the hobby! Yes that's right, the foam starts out as 1/2" thick. I also sometimes use 1" thick foam. The bricks are 1cm by 1cm by 2cm.

What are your thoughts on using balsa wood instead of foam for the wood? Feels like you could potentially get a more realistic result and have an easier time getting the wood grain texture
Absolutely! Balsa would totally work. Personally, I prefer foam since it's much cheaper and can be turned into something a bit more stylized with a hot wire cutter.

One tip that I have for you is when you paint the foam with the base color (in this case black) mix in some modpodge matte with the paint. This will help strengthen the foam to make your terrain more durable. Check out Jeremy’s UA-cam channel Black Magic Craft to find the recipe and also to get some inspiration for more builds.He has some amazing terrain and many tips for building with foam. Thanks! I'm familiar with Jeremy's awesome work and know about his Mod Podge mixture. I personally don't have any issues with durability as-is, but I'd agree with you and suggest adding Mod Podge if the extra strength is needed.
If you use wood glue instead of P.V.A. the bond is stronger. You can DIY your own mod podge mixture that works just fine when mixed with paint; just do a Y.T. search.
If you wanted to seal your build, what would you use?
Mixing mod podge into the black base coat is great way to add extra durability.

I don't know that I'd be able to achieve the same results without a foam wire cutter thing, seems like just a utility knife wouldn't work nearly as well.
For bricks, I'd suggest 5mm thin foam board and using a knife to make 5mm x 5mm x 10mm bricks. It'd be tricky to cut down thicker XPS foam. For the wood, a wire brush can produce some nice texture.

Be warned, this project is impossible without the hot wire table. Manually cutting bricks and planks is an exercise in frustration and futility.
Haha, it's definitely not as easy. I'd suggest some alternatives such as regular foamboard walls without individual bricks and stir sticks / balsa wood for the planks.
