Ported vs Sealed Enclosure Subwoofer Box Test with Decibel Meter Using My Daughters Bass Car

  • An interesting car audio experiment comparing a sealed vs ported sub box using my daughters bass car sound system (my oldschool Rockford Fosgate setup) to illustrate the decibel difference between a sealed subwoofer enclosure vs a ported subwoofer enclosure to see how much output is gained between the two setups using an SSA APM-1 dB meter. I hope this video helps you decide which box you choose when building a box for your woofers.

You’re a cool dad, my dad tutted and disapproved his way through to helping me install my first system and still complains about sounds systems in my car 20 years later. He still asks to listen to the system whenever I make changes though, I treasure those times with my Old Man... :)

I love those old Rockfords... I'm running an old school Rockford Fosgate power 500.1bd on one Cerwin vega stroker 12 at 1ohm. They dont recommend running them 1ohm but it slams very well for one sub in a small vented enclosure. I hope my little girl takes to bass the way yours has... Props to ya man. Any way a man can bond with his kids is a win. Just a plus getting to do it with something you enjoy. Congrats to ur daughter for the 1st place finish....

Love your videos!! Great for Brianna!!! .... With larger area ports the db gain over sealed does get higher.. Eventually it does go 3 db louder... In fact sometimes more 4 to 5 db... But always prove it with a meter!!! Nobody argues with a good meter!!

Ive believed for years, that sealed hits harder. I had 2 old Kicker 15s in a sealed box and I used to set off Car alarms..and THAT was my guage. They sat in the back of a Sport Explorer and had plenty of airspace to expand.

I just haven't been able to find a sub with the same force factor. I went to 4 12" JL audio 12w3 running off twice the power. It was loud but nothing even close to the beating the 2 Fosgate DVC 12's would give you. I wish Rockford Fosgate would release a classic series of car audio where the legends that made the company would be available. I would buy multiple systems just to have backups of everything.

You've probably gone on to a different setup by now, but I wonder what your air speed is in those ports. They might be compressing your output. Also, porting increases the volume at a specific frequency, so it's not necessarily 'supposed' to be +3dB everywhere in the range. Your port tuning and your listening area's tuning are two very different things.

Nice comparison but I wonder how much of a difference there would be sealed if you just took the ports out instead of plugging them?

What I've noticed is that, to gain 3db or more from the subs in a ported enclosure. You need an enclosure that's ridiculously large. As in like 2x larger.
I prefer sealed honestly. My 12s are in a sealed enclosure.

Small sealed box for cars, large ported box for home theater 👍
      Yes, they're usually 2x as large😂

This agrees with the iron law that of course more space makes more Bass.
I've always loved triple or quadruple sealed setups because you can fit twice the drivers in the same amount of air space while maintaining a tighter more accurate sound that has more impact.
I'm actually headed out to the garage right now to start building my sealed enclosure for three 12-in stereo integrity SQL 12s. They are the best deal out there by a mile if you want ultra high performance xbl2 motor sealed subwoofer setups.
Ported can move a lot of air sure but you're never going to get that blur your eyeballs Hammer to the chest at a concert perfect drums feeling out of them.

sealed sounds better and hits lower. if you're going for spl then yeah ported. but i'm into SQ these days.

@@XX-121 if you run enough power on sealed it's still loud but has that concentrated impact and clarity and transient ability that ported doesn't it's worth running twice the power to a sealed setup

We used to get a lot of db gain on isobaric 3 chamber, all ported, 2 drivers. 30 years ago. I preferred conventional boxes for sound quality..these days if you put 2000 watts to a 10" maybe you won't miss the conventional feel?

  • @Newschoolcovers

Are the 36hz the tuning frequency? Then it should be way more than like 1,5db. If so, your ports are too small and compress very hard what makes them behave like a closed box on high spl due to much port speed.

  • @Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix

I'd like to see the dB reading at 20-25hz sealed vs ported. I'm interested to see which will hit harder on the low frequencies. Great video.

Sealed has almost flat response over Low frequencies. If you have a powerful amp and a subwoofer, go for sealed for hard hitting bass

  • @YipperX5

I had a similar situation with my triple audiobahn alum10q's. Friend if mine has 3 as well. Mine are sealed and his is ported and we can not find any major differences between the outputs. The difference is that he rebuilt his with dual 4ohm coils and I am using all stock from the shelf subs. I assume that is because AFAIK these are supposed to be in a sealed setup from per manufacture specs. His setup is approximately 2db louder but they sound identical according to the crowd :D

This question might have been asked and answered already in the comment thread but..Would you say in a music listening scenario instead of a db scenario, the sealed gives a better ,tighter, accurate bass response and is worth the loss of 1 plus some change db?? Thanks if you feel like answering! 👍🙏

    • @johnnycorn7225
      @johnnycorn7225 3 роки тому +2

Since nobody answered I will I absolutely know that the flatter response and better transient response of sealed makes it far superior for me but then again I'm a 46 year old musician that's been a lot of time on a metronome.
Also the earthquake reproduction characteristic of sealed where it literally displaces a section of air in your vehicle that is heaven and a ported does not do this it just fans around a whole bunch of air from the port and sub. It never has that instant earthquake shock type impact to it and I like that.

does the 4" x 14" port mean 4" diameter tube cut to 14" length?
I thought it meant a rectangle cutout 4" high and 14" wide.
I think it needs a larger port than the 4" diameter.
    Which is correct?

In most instances a given drivers optimal ported volume is much larger than it’s optimal sealed volume. That’s why there’s usually a much larger dB difference between the two enclosure types.

Roughly 100 cubic inches for a cylinder 4x8 or 0.058 cubic feet added to the sealed volume per side so 2.558 cf sealed vs 2.5 cf ported would technically be more accurate. I honestly don't feel that 0.058cf (0.232% difference to be exact) in volume would have altered the outcome enough to mention. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I think it depends on your preference I notice a ported box sounds very good in my Tahoe but in a car it sounds like a lot of rattling but sealed boxes sounds good in my car and Tahoe just not as much bass outside so I feel it depends on the vehicle and enclosed trunk or not and a open space trunk I feel ported sounds better in trucks and seal sound better in cars

  • @mikebham4638

I’ve moved my boxes around my trunk just to see if the box is facing your back you get different thump or set up as close to the rear as you can speakers facing the rear.

Does the bass feel "smoother" when sealed and more "boomy" when ported? Or is that difference also negligible?

    • @E4EonEbay

notes are slightly more boomy, but depending on how the box is designed a ported enclosure can sound better than a sealed in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting.
