I used to call all the Nashville radio stations to play him (discovered him with his first album) and they would say "who is he" and hang up. Sad that he only got the recognition he deserved after he died. Better songwriter than Dylan. Check out the John Prine from the Heart website.
I'm almost 71 and have been a fan for 48 years. You have a lifetime to discover all of his incredible songs. I envy you for all the discoveries you have ahead of you.
I’m 66 and I’m just delving in this beautiful man music,I’ve listen word years, stupid mistake I made .Thankful I finally jumped into the rabbit hole to John Prine
You will find some songs don't grab you. But the ones that do well grab you by the soul. I first heard sam stone when I was active duty and some of my buddies didn't come home.
The greatest love I have ever had, my soul mate, and I had whole conversations with the songs we sent each other. When we first started talking, I asked him what he thought of John Prine, not expecting that he'd know of him, as I know few people who do. He immediately began singing a John Prine song. That's when I knew he had my heart. Covid got the best of his mental state and he left me last Friday. Then texted to say he was sorry. This is the last song I ever sent to him. I will always know we belonged together. I will carry him in my heart and I will always wish him all the best...
I'm 39 and never knew of john prine till I found sturgil Simpson who is my current favorite artist and know john prine was his idol and good friend... I now hear why!!!!
That is almost exactly what happened to me.. Been listening to Kurt Vile for a long time, and then in 2020 he released an EP that included ”how lucky” (duet) and ”Speed of the sound of loneliness”.. After realizing those were covers - I jumped on the Prine train and I havn’t jump off yet.
John did capture the essence in what ever "it" was he was singing about, wish I had a favorite but they are all my favorites. John Prine is my favorite.
‘Well I got no hate, and I got no pride I got, so much love that I cannot hide’ makes me cry man song is so beautiful RIP MR PRINE thank you for your music and emotion
I didn't know of you, until you were gone. I still need you, because MS hurts. Life hurts and I imagine God smiles when he heard you sing. You put your heart in your songs.❤
One of my favorite Prine lines ever: "I guess that love is like a Christmas card / You decorate a tree, you throw it in the yard". Such a great metaphor for a failed relationship, family. This is the best written song ever about a failed marriage.
I feel ya brother. I had two failures and the 3rd one that was the best got sick and died. Since then I met one and she broke my heart. This song goes out to HER! Mr. Prine was a master song writer and an awesome guitar picker. I'm learning his songs that make people laugh.
Great storyteller, a great man, great singer/songwriter, There was not a bad bone in his body when he was alive John is now resting in eternal peace in heaven
John Prine, John Stewart, and Chris Smither got me thru a period in the early '90's after my 1rst wife ran off with another guy. Music and great lyrics can save your life. As time goes by you gain perspective. Sometimes what you lose is not as valuable as you think it was at the time. The "Bruised Orange" song by Prine is great therapy. Best wishes....
I’m so sorry that I missed out on so many years of great music and lyrics. My husband had asked me if I heard of him but I said no. My life was so busy I didn’t have time or the internet. My husband passed away at the age of 49,18 years ago and so sorry that I missed out on many years of great music from John Prine ❤️
Was lucky to have been asked to write liner note in Johns upcoming greatest Oh Boy songs being released in July. 3,000 copies available, if you want one text D at 910-540-8471
Prine fan since 1971, a welcome accident (exposure to that first album). I had just returned to the "World" after my second tour in SE Asia. John's lyrics helped me and still are.
I am really disappointed in the fact that John Prine's music passed me by. It's only recently that I found him on youtube, but soon realized what I'd been missing from my record and MP3 collection. I've always loved country music despite living in the UK and I'll stand to be corrected if John wasn't considered a bona fide country artist, but oh my, what a monumental talent he obviously was.
Every word of that applies to me too. I lot of people are saying that they somehow never heard of John P over the decades, and only recently discovered his fantastic songs and style.
I almost missed experiencing John P. fortunately for me a roommate in the service turned me on to him back in 1977. I have been a fan ever since. I've gone from albums to cassettes' to CD's with John Prine, and loved it the whole way (not the cassettes' so much). But I have never considered him country, I've always seen John Prine as Folk music and just John Prine, truly in his own class.
30 years old and just came along this man’s catalog, glad to be blessed enough to listen to such soulful music. also just found out he too is from Maywood Park IL LONG LIVE JOHN PRINE
Was very blessed to see John play twice.. It was so amazing, he’s an amazing storyteller & singer. This man was the real deal. We lost an amazing talent & human being in Mr. John Prine.. R.I.P. ✝️
I heard of John Prine's death from this awful virus this week but was familiar with just "In spite of ourselves" with Iris Dement. When a friend, who's only in his late twenties, posted his own version of this song as a tribute I was blown away. With all the time I've got on my hands right now with "social distancing" and "self isolation" I've been searching UA-cam for more material. And the more I find, the more I want to search. I'm left wondering, how has this genius escaped my attention all my life. I'm truly disappointed to be here now, following his passing, but music and lyrics like these will live forever! RIP John!
I feel for you and envy you all at the same time. I remember discovering Prine when he was just starting out, but never got to see him live until I moved to Nashville 20 years ago. You're going to have the joy of discovery but the regret of knowing you'll never see him perform live, or speak to him after a show to try to convey your gratitude for the music he's shared with us. You are right that his music will live forever, and others will discover it as you have. Enjoy your journey!
Karen German Through my searching of UA-cam for John Prince material, I've now also discovered Steve Goodman and his amazing talent. Thank God for these recordings.
I didn't know this song. Introduction is so good. Song is even better. Two Aquarians, bound to fall apart. But we're going to our daughter's for Christmas. She's head of maths at her school, we didn't do so well in employment. I was a hippie and my ex was a neo-hippie; we have issues with consumer society. Split up nearly 30 years ago but can still work together. Didn't seem remotely likely when we split up.
I play at the guitar and sing a bit. There hasn't been a party in 45 years I've went to that John didn't go with me! There are of course lots of songs I've sang but when I sang "Sam Stone" or "Please don't bury me" not only did you have everyone's attention, everyone would be singing along ... and in the room, everyone was smiling.... Imagine everyone getting along!! Thanks John RIP.
"And your heart gets bored with your mind and it changes you". Wow. I've loved that line for years. To me it means you're thinking, worrying, thinking same stuff over and over, all in your mind. Your heart finally gets so sick of it that your heart breaks thru and starts you looking at the NOW and your feelings about NOW and you FEEL what your heart and body sense in this amazing world and life.
In the context of the song, I think it means that if you're married, said the vows, supposedly made the commitment, you need to "walk the line" as Johnny Cash would say. Allowing yourself to entertain all these "feelings" and divorce somebody because "you got bored" is bogus. Nobody should fall for somebody like that, maybe they'll go extinct.
Jordan Miller I hope you got to see him. I was planning to see him this summer. Now he’s very sick and the world is crazy. The music helps. John Prine’s music always helps.
I say this about John.. he has written some of the best songs.. soothing.. relaxing.. memorizing.. this song here, has become my favorite.. written and sung by John.. his voice.. goes with his words
Was fortunate enough to see John a few times in Glasgow, one being a double act with Iris De Ment........ Amazing live act, amazing songwriter...... Thank you for the ''magic'' John.
SO heartbreaking to hear of his passing. It was already a bit of a tough day today and now I see this! It's so odd losing people like this that are famous. That one-sided exchange of joy and happiness means we hold a special little corner of our hearts for some of these entertainers and yet they know nothing about us in return. John Prine has always been one of those entertainers I've cherished - so many sun-soaked days drinking beer with friends or late night cribbage games with his voice in the background. I'm going to have to have a glass (or two) of wine for JP tonight! I just have a heavy heart today, not just for him but for his family and for anyone else that's died because of this or has lost someone close to them. While I listen to these tunes tonight I send you all the warmest and sweetest vibes I could possibly muster. "Super vibes", some would say. RIP, Mr. Prine. Spread your cheer and your music and deliver that mail all over the universe.
John Prine is a mirror reflection of the greatest singers / songwriters of our past generation , His songs will live for ever in the hearts of humankind . John Prime is truly one of my favorites!
He makes it sound simple, but ever try to play it? I've spent the last MONTH trying to learn this to where I can play it live (after the clusterfuck of course!), And I kept thinking, "damn, how can something that sounds so simple be so difficult to master!" John was a master of his craft, no question.🙏
Patrick Schnall keep at it dude and you’ll get it. I thought it was very difficult to begin but once you’ve got that thumb and index finger picking pattern down you’re sweet!
Can't believe at 55 I had never heard of this guy until a month ago. Most songs are a tune with some lyrics tacked onto it. But this guy, JHC amazing songs. Hello There, sent me into floods of tears. I always loved Roger Waters ability to write a song with meaning and he's the reason I got turned onto John Prine. I'm ever grateful to him and to the late John Prine for writing such emotive and meaningful music.
I still cannot believe you are gone, John Prine. I've been listening to and playing your music on my guitar since the '70s. It has been my heartbreak during COVID, that you are gone.....
"Your heart gets bored with your mind and it changes you". Wow...so much in that one sentence! This song is from the double LP "The Missing Years". Every song on that LP is great! Tons of guest artists singing, playing, writing, and producing songs on it. My fav John Prine LP. I'll be missing John whatever years I have left that are still missing.
Its an awful mess. Its almost like you cant not feel sorry for the poor bastard, or bitch and because they are being so foolish. Best to find these things out sooner than later. Gods blessings in disguise, as most are in life..

Marco van den Berg Helemaal mee eens. Lovely song.
SO MANY 2 CHOOSE FROM, BUT I AGREE
He makes it sound simple, but ever try to play it? I've spent the last MONTH trying to learn this to where I can play it live (after the clusterfuck of course!), And I kept thinking, "damn, how can something that sounds so simple be so difficult to master!" John was a master of his craft, no question.🙏
Patrick Schnall keep at it dude and you’ll get it. I thought it was very difficult to begin but once you’ve got that thumb and index finger picking pattern down you’re sweet!
American legend. Divorce for Christmas..what a line
That slide part is just gorgeous.
Totally agree
It’s heartbreaking for us all who loved his music. He always leaves one in a state of awe. Is this your favorite song?
miss him. his lyrics so clever , so perfect.
First I’ve ever heard of this man. Songwriting and lyrics are so good.
Listen to the first album, simply called John Prine. A true classic.
Dakota L always start with his first album.
Same here...i love it
Thank You Mr. Prine! Among the best of the best.
Right? sound like he was involved with a Gemini, or Libra. LOL'
The Missing Years is such a great album! It’s so beautifully balanced with all its wonderful songs. 💜
Bellissima canzone!qui John mi ricorda un po' Bob dilan...😊😍😘🎶🎸🎶💘💘💘💘💯
Dam good song writer and singer, God has him now
The depth of that train set story is understood perfectly by many a man having gone through a divorce
The whole song is too. It's beyond absurd how genius he was.
@@mikedunlap4259 sadly I only discovered this man a few months ago...his music has dominated my playlist every day since. And now he's gone
Women get it, too. We paint the living room whatever color we want! Haha!
@@KatieEHoffman lol. How many times have you changed the living room color back to something you prefer?
Beautiful.
This song really touched me deeply.
Thank you John.
