    20:24 That's a puffed rice cannon. I seen them in Japan. Edit* On further research, it is a grain puffer, it can on other grains, in Korea they use it for puffed corn(very similar to popcorn), hence the butter quote. Like the cereal Kellogg corn pops.

    35:18. I think she hit the nail on the head with that one. It is the type of place where if you have someone coming to visit and wanting to try the full experience, perfect. We could think of something we might like better, but if you are craving local food that is a place to go. Every country has places like that. National treasures.

    38:07 those are yoghurt drinks or probiotic drinks like Yakult. In fact the carrot one you drank is actually from Korean Yakult rebranded as hy. Probably if you had slammed more of those earlier during the trip you might have regulated your gut issues faster. the feminine looking bottles have probiotic strains supposedly made for skin care, weight loss or making ladies part fresh 😅

    When I went to the doctor before moving to Japan, the doctor was warning me not to drink the water out of the taps there for the first week or so that my body would get use to the bacteria. It just happens to certain people I guess. I've traveled over Europe, Australia, and Asia. Never gotten sick.

    Eric you should buy activated charcoal capsules. 5 or 6 of those can clear up stomach issues very very quickly. I you have food poisoning and make a trip to any ER they will give you this black sludge like stuff. It’s activated charcoal. Even if it’s not food poisoning it can help immensely. Cheers. 😊

    Hey Eric, remember you cheered me up, when I was in hospital with ulcerative colitis? Well it turned out I am histamine intolerant too. That is tricky, because one day you can eat all sort of food, without a problem and the next day you eat the same and get really really sick. It has to do with riping processes, so cured and ripe products can get me real sick with throwing up, headaches, or diarea. For me probiotics were a gamechanger, no colitis as long I take my probiotics and stay on a histaminfree diet. Maybe it will help you too to get your gutbacteria up their game when you are traveling. However, great series, thanks for always share your life with us.

    @5:55 Thank you, K&E, for always being so entertaining!
    However, Eric, sorry if this is unsolicited medical advice. Having seen your condition as a veteran viewer, speaking medically, you may be suffering from "Selective IgA Deficiency" It is one of the most common primary immune deficiencies and is usually asymptomatic (meaning without symptoms, as most people don't know they have it). Generally, the antibody (immunoglobulin IgA) fights "bugs" or pathogens in the body that are lined with mucus like the sinuses, breathing tubes, or stomach and intestine. If you are concerned, I suggest you get tested for anything like that; it is done via blood work. One of the major concerns for people who may have this is that when someone with it gets a blood transfusion, they may have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) requiring immediate attention. Therefore, those with this immunodeficiency wear medical bracelets.
    If this is the case with you, then you may get sick when you encounter a new pathogen (bacteria, viruses, or toxins) or those you haven't encountered in a very long time. This is because the antibodies you form when you first encounter pathogens wane over time, making you more prone to infections. This is probably why you most often get sick when you travel. Still, those with this Selective IgA deficiency are not mounting an intense enough fight against these pathogens. The body tries to get rid of these pathogens by "flushing" out the system by causing vomiting and diarrhea, the same reason most people are not given antibiotics when they have similar conditions.
    Hope this was helpful!

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  11 місяців тому +1

      That actually sounds like that might be what is going on, interesting. Is there any treatment for this? If this was my problem, do you think there is anything I can do to prep myself for trips to try and avoid this reaction?

    • @greensky01
      @greensky01 11 місяців тому +1

      @@kydeanderic
      Yes, it may be one probable cause for your condition. Unfortunately, there is no current cure for such a condition as it is genetic. Much like how we cannot change the color of hair or eyes we were born with, we can only treat its symptoms.
      As far as what you can do to prep or avoid a reaction, is really a good question. Like how Kyde was mentioning the oysters cross-contamination, we cannot do much regarding the unknown variables. Frankly speaking, it is a challenge to know what will and will not cause a reaction in your body. Other than proper hygiene and normal precautions I haven't really come across literature stating otherwise.
      If you are suffering from it, and need to be tested first, then your condition is mild to moderate. Most mild cases are managed symptomatically. Though, what you have been doing is actually good.
      As you may already know, when someone vomits or has diarrhea, the body loses many electrolytes such as potassium (involved in pH and fluid maintenance along with electrical action potential of nerve and muscle cells), sodium (maintains proper fluid balances, allows various electric potential and maintains blood pressure), and chloride and bicarbonate ( which help in the appropriate acid/base balances).
      For example, many people suffering from cholera are treated symptomatically with oral rehydration. The problem occurs when you have it in a more severe form in which you have recurrent sinus, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal infections. People become too weak and unstable and lose many electrolytes. Those with severe symptoms are generally given antibiotics for prophylaxis. Still, in your situation, if it is the case, it seems to be mild, and you probably need to be more cautious (which I know you have been) and keep doing what you have been doing.
      Obviously, you and Kyde know each other best, so if you feel something is wrong, please do not hesitate to seek medical attention. Still, since I do not know your complete medical history, you should discuss this and other concerns with your primary care physician and/or an immunologist.
      All the best; I wish you two more safe and healthy adventures in the future!
      Thank you!

    • @greensky01
      @greensky01 11 місяців тому +1

      @@kydeanderic
      Also, regarding food-borne illnesses, you need to look for several things to determine the etiology.
      In general, a healthy person with a new onset of diarrhea is most often caused by bacteria that someone ingests. These bacteria take somewhere between 1 day - 5 days from the time of ingestion to form toxins, which then cause diarrhea.
      Depending on the type of bacteria, someone can have watery, bloody, or mucus diarrhea with or without fever and abdominal pain. Still, the most common cause of watery diarrhea is the bacteria E. Coli. It occurs about a day after ingestion. E. Coli is associated with undercooked beef or foods contaminated with bovine feces.
      In addition, improperly prepared foods like pasta, rice, or potato salad can have bacteria that produce preformed toxins. Ingestion of these preformed toxins primarily causes vomiting with/without diarrhea. Preformed toxins generally cause vomiting about 1-4 hours after ingestion.

    Maybe it’s the tap water? I always use bottled water whoever I travel, even if it’s something as mundane as brushing my teeth. The water treatment quality isn’t the best in Korea, as they suggest to use a countertop water filter system. I’ve only been to Japan once, but the hotel I stayed at said the tap water was drinkable. Maybe Eric is super sensitive to tap water/the ice provided in drinks. My dad is the exact same as Eric where he gets sick whenever he travels, but when he avoids tap water and ice, he’s totally fine. 😅
