    My ball python is weird. She’s very active and hates not being handled. She looks around her cage for me and tries to climb out when I’m near the cage. She’s very adorable and her booper snoot it cyoot.

      Selina This reply and no longer applies to you, but idc. When you get a ball python and put it in the enclosure, leave it alone for a week or two. If it's kinda skittish, hold them once or twice a day for about 10 minutes, and they will gradually become more holdable. Good luck with your boop noodle! (I'm not an expert I just got this information from a reptile educator, I'm just a kid ;-;)

      @@GeckoGaming-yc8gr I got my ball python and i fed it the same day she got used to her enclosure very fast (and when i got her the last time she was fed was 10 days ago) and like 2 days after that i was able to hold her. since then i have almost held her everyday and she seems to like it and is totally relaxed and loves exploring.

      Gourgandise you should try out a lizard some are act like puppies even able to come if you call their name. They like cuddling because your warm and they love being pet. This is if the lizard is of course handled often. I’d recommend trying to pet or handle a blue tongue skink or bearded dragon. Many people enjoy bearded dragons company. Blue tongue skinks are sometimes harder to come by depending on your area.

    When I first bought my ball python, I was told she was eating frozen/thawed rat pups but WHENEVER I tried to feed her, she would refuse! I tried bigger sizes, smaller sizes, color, scent and temp differences.
    Everything would be perfect, temp, humidity, clutter, hides etc. Then a couple weeks passed, and she started to loose a lot of weight and so I took her back to the store and said "OMG HELP, SHES GONNA DIE"
    So they took her in the back and offered a live rat pup and she took it immediately. I was furious!
    So my stubborn ass snake refuses anything but live which just makes me so sad every time I feed her knowing I'm help killing a rat in the process and that it can be dangerous
    But I know its what I gotta do. :(

    Hi Alex! I HOPE YOU READ THIS! I was part of a ball python group on Facebook and they were first off incredibly rude and self-righteous, haha but mostly they seemed to be completely against any enclosure that wasn't a tub or a rack. I would love to hear your opinion on this as published experts have never stated the same (as far as I can tell from my research). This just seems to be proliferating amongst the internet world. Also, people have said Jumpstart thermostats are really bad and when they fail they fail in the ON position- which can burn and kill the snake. Do you still use the Jumpstart thermostat? Will you be upgrading or switching anytime soon.

    • @GoHerping
      @GoHerping  6 років тому +11

      When it comes to thermostats, I've been told terrible things about all of them. "Never use zilla!", "Never use jumpstart!", "Never use [insert every company in existance]!" In my experience, the Jumpstart one is great, but any electronic has a possibility of failing so it's important to keep tabs on them. Facebook groups have been interesting lol. Many people try to force others into one way of doing things, and one way only. Tubs are great in many cases, but have many cons, just like tanks. Rack systems are very debated, and there are so many variables with them. I want to do some videos in more details with my opinions on all of this because it'd be a long comment to type out haha. But overall, there's more than one way to care for every animal, and one way isn't the most viable or best option for everyone. So I just try to take in as many opinions as possible and come to the best conclusion.

    • @tinierthanthou1
      @tinierthanthou1 6 років тому +2

      Ok but...why would you need a “rack system” if you only have one snake?

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 6 років тому

      Jumpstart and similar inexpensive thermostats use a small mechanical relay to switch the output ON and OFF. Those small relays will not last forever when switching on and off many times a day. These controllers are best for very long on/off cycles. And yes, these relays can fail in the ON position. So how long they last depends how they are used. For heat mats, a better alternative is a proportional controller like the many types sold specifically for reptile heating that typically cost around 100 dollars. Those can switch on and off with virtually no limit.
      I am not on facebook, but I am one of those tub snobs. This is 2018, we know what kind of snakes ball pythons are, we know how they react, we know they are secretive, we know that they do best with a reasonable humidity. All we know is best achieved with a tub compared to a glass tank. There is no debate anymore. A person does not need an expensive rack persay, but anyone with multiple ball pythons would really benefit from a good rack. For the single snake keeper, a cheap industrial shelf (even those cheapo plastic shelf sets from home depot) and a tub that you can secure the lid will work. The tub should not be too tall. Add a good heat mat or heat tape, add a good temperature controller. Ball python will love it. I started with a few gray tubs from Freedom Breeder. Just the tubs. I made my own lids from pegboard and 3/4 inch square pine. I added some latches to secure it. Worked very well.

    Only just finding your channel after getting my ball python, Zelda. She's still a baby and I haven't had her for very long so there's not much to report about her besides that she's very calm and sweet. But these videos have helped me feel a bit more confident about how to plan stuff out and take good care of her. Even in just a couple days, she means a lot to me already. I love her very much and I'm grateful to have found your videos so that I can ensure she is well cared for ♡

    I have a baby female she’s new but she has eaten 3 times since I got her. Ever since she shed she hasn’t eaten it’s been like 3 weeks. Her temperature is 95 but I think the humidity is low. She’s been drinking and flickering her tongue. But she does look like she’s getting a little skinny. What should I do? I heard to switch their prey items

    Switching to rats from mice- I had a snake (in this case not a ball python), and I was feeding her mice and when I got home I realized they hadn't given me a frozen large mouse, but a frozen young rat about the same size.
    Ok sweetie, let's see if you'll eat this, and we'll go back to mice next feeding. She ate it just fine.
    Next feeding- no thanks.
    wait a week
    Feeding attempt- no thanks.
    wait a few more days (temps and such checked after the first refusal 'cause she was always a fantastic feeder overall except here and there in the winter months)
    Feeding attempt- no thanks...
    But in the meantime she was patrolling her tank more and more- she wasn't losing weight but she was definitely acting hungry, like she was trying to search out food. Fine- I'll get another small young rat about the size of the mouse, yup, more money- and of course, that's what she wanted.
    From then on she refused mice and ONLY wanted young rats... lol.

    my ball python is weird. She's a rescue, and I've had her for almost six months now. and she still doesn't strike her prey. like I'll dangle the small rat or even mouse in front of her, and she won't strike. but if I take away her hide and put the rodent in between her body, she'll consider eating it, and won't even constrict it. it's very strange, and I'm not sure what's wrong with her or why she doesn't strike. again I don't know her backstory or her history so maybe something is off about her.
    EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I got her, they estimated her to be around 5 years old and is a Mahogany morph, so there's no spider gene to cause neurological damage

    • @miballs65
      @miballs65 6 років тому +2

      Some snakes just don't get real excited about prekilled prey. I'm guessing thats what you're using since the snake can eat it without striking or constricting.

      Brookealyn Danelle I have a Pueblan milk snake that's an odd eater too. I feed frozen/thawed since that's what he's raised on, but he refuses to strike. He'd rather I just leave it on a flat rock in his cage for him to eat at his leisure.

    Ok I just bought my first ball python two days ago, and for the most part I've done my research on them but I forgot to ask 2 of the most important questions when I bought her...... **Face palm** does she eat live or frozen & if she eats jumbo mice or rats, so now I'm worried when it comes time to feed her next Saturday

    • @sabzillagorilla
      @sabzillagorilla 6 років тому +4

      Where did you get her? You might be able to call the place and ask. I would suggest buying one frozen mouse, and one frozen rat. Offer one to her, wiggle it around so it seems live. If she eats it or not, try the other the next time you feed. If both are eaten, you can choose which one to stick with. If neither, try feeding live. Do you know when the last time she ate was? She might slow down with eating during winter. If you are having trouble getting her to eat, don't be afraid to get her nice and hungry after 2-4 weeks of not eating. I have a baby sand boa(3 months old) who wouldn't eat for 3 weeks and he was fine. Hopefully you won't have too much trouble finding what she likes!

      Katie Elaine I bought her from a breeder at the reptile super show in Pomona, and that's actually a great idea! So if I buy both a frozen mouse and a frozen rat, say I try the mouse first and she doesn't eat, then I have to throw it away and try again the following week with the rat? I can't re-freeze the mouse? I've never had this kinda trouble before because I have a corn snake and he will eat just about anything haha he's a horker

    • @sabzillagorilla
      @sabzillagorilla 6 років тому +2

      Robert Mata lol yeah my corn is the same. What I normally do with my baby sand boa is wiggle it around a few minutes, leave it in for an hour and as long as it's not in there all night you can totally refreeze the mouse/rat! You can do this a few times with each, but after you use that same one a few times you would need to throw it out

    Just discovered you looking for answers on my first ball python. I’ve had him 2 weeks. The first time I handled him he struck the air. So I tried to feed him and he was shying away. Tried to offer food a couple times but no bite. 🤷🏼‍♀️ he strikes at the glass but won’t eat. What’s wrong with him? I was told they’re docile. I’ve held several and never had them be aggressive.

    I feed my bp frozen thawed adult mice and he never strikes at them or tries to constrict them. He just noses at them for a few minutes then eats. From what I could find online, I think this might mean he's figured out that striking and constricting isn't necessary because he's being fed dead prey, but it's still kinda weird. He was fed live mice before I acquired him but switched over to frozen thawed without any problems.

    This video was a great idea- you’re correct that most people concentrate on all the positives of owning each type of pet, and don’t ever mention the reality of what caring for the animal might be like, and what the less fun or more challenging aspects might be. It’s really important for people to be properly informed so they can make educated and considered choices when getting a new pet, as knowing both the pros and cons of each species will lessen the chances of the animal being mistreated or needing to be re-homed 👍
