Very helpful video! I had a runt hatch here last year, and it has been a struggle getting him on track. He's just now getting some squish to him. He's still a bit too thin for my liking, but he's finally eating well and getting where he should be.
Nice videos guys! Positive and enthusiastic. I've been taking care of my boy Vladimir for 29 years now. I picked him up from a local breeder the day he hatched. He's about 4 feet, eats 3 mice every few weeks, sleeps from mid December until March or so and is active and happy. I got really lucky 2 weeks ago and found an incredibly handsome 6 month old male Lesser BP with complete cage set up for $40! Now my wife has her own to spoil! She named him Odin. I've had pet snakes for over 50 years now (I'm 56) and I have to say BP's are well tempered and easy to care for. Again, nice job guys!

My girl is a picky eater and I’ve been wondering if she was underweight. According to this she’s doing pretty well. She’s very shy since she was a rescue and hadnt been held much, but starting to open up to me a bit.

I really needed a video like this, as soon I'm getting a ball python of my own and I feel they may be underweight where im getting them from so I plan on checking.
Slow growth is best growth. so many issues come from overfeeding, power feeding etc. I've always worried about how thin the line is between good and over feeding and this made me much more comfortable, thank you!

I think the second one is up to weight now, and the first one has gained and filled out a lot but she has a bit to go!

My girl would probably be underweight if she weren’t in my care now, the last owner I got her from was only feeding her 2 pinkie mice every Sunday when she should have been on adult mice at her size...I’m glad I was able to get her out of that situation.
Thank you so much for this video!! I rescued a 7 year old ball python from a friend who wasn’t taking care of it properly, and he was SO underweight, and still is. The thing was, I didn’t have any other ball pythons to compare it to at the time, so the video helps me a lot. His spine is still going to a point, but not nearly as bad as before. Before, his sides were concave and you could tell he just wasn’t health at all.

You didn’t talk about the fat deposits on the temporal bone (top of head) that’s like the number 1 rule for weight it’s what we use at the Emergency hospital all the time.

green cat reptiles have rather extensive areas of fluid and fat behind there eyes and they shouldn’t look sunken at all and a loss of fat there will make the eyes look somewhat sunken and the head look slightly depressed on the left or right side(or both) so if u see either sunken depressions in the head or sunken eyes, I.e they are pushed into the skull a bit, then your animal is probably underweight. This works for your sliders most snake species like ball pythons and many of the lizard species like your bearded dragons. If u lightly touch these fat pads u will see the eye slightly bulge in a healthy animal because the fat pad is resting against a area of fluid found behind the eye and you are pushing it a bit. As long as u don’t press hard the animal will be in no danger (u really have to pressed hard to hurt the animal this way so it’s no risk to the animal) this is the #1 way to score a reptiles body condition in the clinical setting because those fat deposites are the first to go when an animal

Took in an adult rescue. I was pretty sure she wouldn’t take the food because of stress from poor husbandry from previous owner (also gonna mention that she was on live and I offered frozen) but she took it right away. She also just took a second meal last night (fed her 9 days after first meal). Her spine does not stick out like the one y’all showed, but I can feel her ribs. Should I stick to current feeding schedule and size (it’s the same size as the thickest part of her body)?

I currently have a ball python whose healthiness is difficult to determine.
-the animal physically looks thinner overall upon defecation, but that evenly distributed thickness returns almost instantly when they eat.
-the spine sticks out in an intensity between the two ball pythons displayed
-no signs of lethargy
-I ran my finger down the lateral side of the snake. I do not feel bones.
-eats on a biweekly schedule, medium rats slightly larger than their girth.
Could they have internal parasites??
What online site would you recommend for buying a boa?
I have a juvenile ball. She has not eaten for 5 weeks. I've tried live, F/T, braining, and gerbil scenting. She is 16" and 67g. I can see her spine, but not feel her ribs. When should I be worried?
So my snake is pretty young still, and he started eating regularly for me before going off feed shortly after. He was underweight when I got him and he stopped eating for me before I could get him to a healthy weight.
What would you say about assist feeding him (which I had to do when I first got him as he hadn’t eaten on his own yet) until he’s a healthy weight- or would you advise against this?

Hey I just bought a ball python and the breeder said he'd been "maintenance feeding" her, but her skin is a bit loose and she looks almost triangular at parts because her spine sticks out so much.

Say they are under weight. Would you then feed them two of the proper sized mouse or rat a week instead of one to try and help them gain weight?
Feed weekly mice that are twice as thick as the snake's thickest part. If that doesn't work throw in a mid-week meals every other week.
Amazing Animal Adventures hi, I have my 1st and have only had her 3 weeks so I'm still learning but was told to feed her adult mice 22-28 gr but I noticed last week feeding that the mouse is just about the exact same size as her thickest middle- so, that's not right? Instead of wasting these, can I give her 2 each week same night? Also, I've been feeding her every 7 days, should it be 5 days??
Robin Marvel I recommend twice as thick for the underweight ones. As long as yours doesn't have that sharp ridge, your fine feeding those weekly.

I was looking at some snakes for sale from some.breeder and almost all of the snakes for sale... are hatchlings and their spines are showing.. and they look all curvy... I was wondering if that means they are all underweight or maybe bad breeding or ehat... I bought a dnake from that breeder but the snake I bought didnt look underweight.. like all the others.. I havent received the snake yet because it's cold but it's just something I noticed and I'm worried. I plan to breed. Any info or help? Thanks!

I recently got a pastel ball python from a coworker who didnt know how to care for snakes. his neck is super skinny and his back has a big ridge on it. though i think he can be saved with proper care and love. Im gonna do my best to bring this cutie back to full health.

I've had my Ball python for about 2 years now, he's gotten pretty big since he was a baby (from roughly 10" when I first got him to about 3'6" at 2 years old) and I haven't had him eat in about 3 months now. I do realize that it is winter and he may be fasting just because of the colder temperatures in my house but I don't want to risk him getting underweight. I've attempted to feed him every week, switching up sizes of mice/rats, coating them in the smells of other rodents like hamsters, serving it wet/dry.. But he's all "nah I'm not hungry now". He's around 800 grams since I last weighed him as well and hasn't seemingly lost weight, but I'm still worried. Any suggestions on getting him to eat?
I really wouldn't worry until March. He should start eating then. However, you could make sure his temps are normal. That may help. But if it doesn't get him eating don't sweat it. If he doesn't kick into gear by March then I would start worrying.

I know next to nothing about egg-eating snakes, but this is purely a ball python weight tutorial so I would not use this to judge them. Sorry that I can't be of more help!

Shelia is so much like my Ball Python! I have a Pastel Fire BP and she is just like Shelia! She’s so chill and is okay with anyone handling her. My younger cousins have come over and touched and pet her and she’s just like “yeah cool okay”. The main difference is that Nigel is younger (she’s almost a year old) and is a great eater

I have a baby ball python that is severely underway that I've had to assist feed multiple times and she continues to lose weight what can I do? I have weighed her and measured her but I'm not sure what the appropriate measurements are and I cannot find them online. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not even sure if she's actually a baby I don't know any of her previous history but I know her head is really small.
Ok so if you feed your snake once a week and he has a good feeding response hasn't missed a meal and is still a little thin not as bad as that snake you showed. How do you fatten him up a little bit to get him healthy? Btw he is a little too big for hoppers and a little too small for adult mice he's stuck at this reallly weird in between size so what do I do?
A snake, especially a skinny one can take a meal twice as thick as the thickest part of its body. Try that and if its still a tad slim feed it an extra mid-week meal every other week.

I've been super nervous lately because my ball python hasn't eaten for months but when I look at her I'm pretty sure her body shape is normal! It's just weird though, I feel like she's almost more squishy than the ball pythons I see in like your videos and other videos, like her skin feels looser? So I don't know!

If he's super obese. move down to a lower size mouse. But if its just a light chubbiness, I'd be inclined to say don't even worry about it. He's still growing.

Lyndsee Wharton .not sure what age or size ur ball is but I increased the size of mouse for my ball and still feed every 5 or 6 days and he filled out nicely.

Thats ok. Mines about 7 months old. Had him on hoppers.wasnt sure if he was ready for adult mouse but tried them 2 months ago and he took them no problem.

Usually you go by how big around he is at the biggest part of his body compared to the mouse size. You would be surprised at the size they can take. I thought mine would have trouble with an adult mouse but he took it down easy. I got the three pack adult size from petco just in case there was an issue. But he did fine
i got a baby ball python and still hasnt fed, the person from the petshop has 6 of them and he told me i have to force feed when he turns 90days old but i still dont know how
Try feeding live. Sometimes you need to get them on a steady diet first, then switch over to frozen thawed.

NO definitely not. Other snakes have different indicators. This applies only to ball pythons!

Well then, my bp is overweight, which puts me at ease considering he's refused food for months now.

Our ball python still hasn't eaten since we got him about a week ago. He was fed the previous Tuesday before we got him. Should this be anything to be worried about? He doesn't look underweight.
Check his temperatures. If he's not warm enough, he may not eat. If that and everything else looks good behaviorally, then just wait, and offer weekly. Sometimes ball pythons go off feed and there's nothing you can do. Don't be concerned until he starts looking a little skinny.
Temperature was a bit low, so was humidity. We fixed that. We're going to try feeding him next week.
Sounds like a plan. Feel free to shoot me an email (awesomeanimals2000@gmail.com) if he starts losing weight. Keep in mind he could go several weeks and not eat and be ok, but if he starts losing big chunks of weight you have an issue.

You shouldn't even try to feed a ball python after they've moved homes, until about 14 days after the move so they fully adjust to their new surroundings

My ball python is 5 years old and I weighed them yesterday and they were 1046 grams. The pet shop person wasn't sure if it's a she or a he but they guessed it's a she. But isn't that quite small female? They were feeding her one or two 40 g mice which is too small for her!!! And they said they had her about 6 months before I bought her. :/ She doesn't seem underweight though but I'll check her the same way you did in the video. I'm still starting to think that maybe she's a he after all because she's so small if she were a female.
My ball is fairly young, but will only take a mouse every other week.. any tips? I'm losing my mind 😭
Try offering larger meals. As long as she is maintaining that shape outlined in the video, she's doing ok!

What should you do if your ball python isn't eating? I've heard that they're known to go off of feed and I think mine just did for the first time... What should I do about it? Especially if the food is live???
Its normal for many ball pythons to go off feed every winter. Don't worry about it as long as they start eating by February or March at the latest.
