  • Jack of all trades or Master of none?!
    I use the AP Light fencing Jacket for more than 4 years now. I got a prototype of the original 350N design and meanwhile upgraded to the Next Generation 800N version. I fought with this jacket almost every weapon in HEMA there is: Longsword, Sword and Buckler, Sidesword, Rapier, Smallsword, Sabre, Spear and other Pole weapons, Dagger and a few more. I got bruises (but never more), I sweated in it and I think I can speak in detail about it's qualities. So enjoy this comparison and let me know, if you would like to see more reviews in the future!

    Great review! I have the 350N AP Light and like it quite a bit, but it does have those weak spots you mention. Congratulations on becoming a dad! It certainly changes things.

    I recently got an 800N AP light, my previous jacket being an 800N ARCEM. Great jacket indeed, for all weapons. The only problem I have is that the shoulder protection can interfere when doing Guardia Alta. On the other hand, it's nice to not have massive bruises there :P

      Interesting, I use these high guards fairly often and never had an issue.

    How would you compare heat exchange in 800N vs 350N of AP Light? Covering the weak spot is great, but does it make you sweat more?

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  Рік тому +2

      Yup, it does - I suppose the 800N fabric is denser and therefore does not let the air flow as easily.

      I have to add the 800N is still great on this aspect.
      I switched from an old regular 350N AP to a 800N NG AP light, and it was a very big improvement.
      I live in southern France and it's quite hot.

    Funny how the colours on 350 are still so vibrant. Sadly that was not the case of red in my jacket.

    Hi, do you think that AP Light 800N from spes is worth to buy as my first jacket for long sword?
    Another option is AP 800N (heavy model).
    I would prefer light one because it has better ventilation and im overheating much :p it is also easier to clean, but it has much less protection :(
    and here is my question is NG 800N light still worth to buy as first jacket in comparison to heavy one
    (im planning to buy extra elblows and forearms protectors + chest protector form PBT, regardless of chosen model)
    One of my hema instructors said that heavy is better and he would never recomended light jacket as first jacket.. but i still dont know.. another instructor (he is training saber) said that it is easy to push some extra protective foam into light jacket. Third instrucror said that light jakcet is good but i will have always some extra bruises. AND 4th one said that light model give no proteciton and it is better to buy heavy one xDD
    Help! :D

      So, first up: I've always fenced with light jackets and it was never really a problem for me, but you certainly bruise more often than with a heavy jacket - but only where the foam is not. I think the protection on the light jacket, where the foam is inserted, is comparable to the heavy one. Especially with an additional chest protector, your ribs are safe. Problem ares might be the shoulders and upper arms, but if you find out, that it hurts too much you can easily get a plastic protector overlay for there as well.
      Heat and convenience to wash are better with the light jacket. If you opt for 800N you get great resistance against accidental penetration, but heat transfer will be limited. (I have an AP light in 350N and in 800N and the 350N is considerable less hot).
      Personally, if I'd recommend the AP light NG in 350N, if you are weighing less heat over a couple of additional bruises. Get the chest, elbow and forearm protectors immediately and upgrade shoulders and upper arms if needed.
      Hope, that helps!

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  7 місяців тому +1

      Well, it depends on what tolerance for bruises you got. Personally, it's my longsword jacket and I use the officer for sidesword & rapier.

      @@SchildwachePotsdam Good stuff! I had a 1st gen AP a long time ago and those jackets were impossible to move in specially if they weren't customized to your size Soo hearing about this new jackets being easy to move in is great. Thank you for your help! 🔥💪

    What’s it like to wash them?
    Do you need to take the pads out?
    Can you machine wash and throw it in a dryer?
    I’m a long time sport fencing coach looking for a better coaching jacket. I like to wash my gear after every practice, and most traditional fencing coaches gear is non-washable.
    I don’t want to be one of the many smelly fencing coaches… I was considering the 800N.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  Рік тому +1

      I take to main pads out and use the washing machine on low heat. Then I air dry them. I turn the jacket inside out and close the zippers to prevent damage. 😊

      I’ve sprayed pads with rubbing alcohol before, but it only really delays smell..

      I wash mine even with the pads inside. Depends on the volume of the washing mashine. Air drying them afterwards barely makes a difference 😁. And the color is similar even with washing them not always inside out. It's basically just a few weeks younger than Martin's jacket
