How to Grow an Avocado from Seed
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 чер 2020
- When avocado season swings around I can't resist chucking a few in water to watch them grow. It takes a little patience but it's so fun to see the seed splitting open and that little tap root making an appearance. Even though it's better to move it to soil before the root gets too big they'll grow pretty big in water so if you just want a fun project to watch then keep it in water and if you want to grow it into a pot plant - or even one for the garden - then get it into soil.
As far as I know, avocados grown from a shop bought avocado seed won't grow any avocados and even if it did, it'd take around 10 years and they wouldn't be the same as the avocado you got the seed from. If you want it to grow fruit you need to wait until it gets big enough and then graft on part of an already fruiting tree.

After watching this video in January 2024, I sprouted avocado seeds in March. Great video, thanks! ❤
I went back to see how to properly put it in the ground)))
I've been putting the seeds upside down lmao. Thanks for this
Omg, me too! LOL
Mee too. OMG 😳
It's a learning experience for us all 😂
Oh my I thought I was the only one 😂 I can’t believe it 😅
Me too 😂
I watched this a month ago and now I’m coming back for the next steps, yay!!! 🎉
CLIFF'S NOTES: How to grow an avocado from seed: Select an avocado, wait until it ripens, take seed out (makes no difference if it is large or small), plant seed into dirt with the belly button down without peeling it, water it and wait 2 or 3 months. Done. No silly sticks or water in cups necessary. That's just for noob entertainment. You also don't want to do the water silliness because the roots should go into dirt right off the bat so they are well arranged in there. If you do the water thing then you'll be screwing up the roots. There, straight from the avocado farmer.
How often do you water the seed? I'm trying your method but it couldn't possibly just grow off of one watering.
@@lydiabrady9000 The soil around the seed needs to be damp so the root can find moisture. This isn't "my method". This is how avocado seeds are planted for grafting. No serious grower will ever use sticks and water like that. That's for entertaining.
@@MasterKenfucius Thank you for the information. Stay blessed 😊
@@lydiabrady9000 Anytime!
Thank you. Every single time I researched this, the water method comes up... so annoying. Appreciate it.
What a great tutorial showing all parts of the process. Amazing work
If you soak the seed for a few hours it makes it easier to peel.
Orrrr if u leave it in the sun for a Lil bit
I put my seed in the fridge and it was easy to peel the seed plus it also grow baby roots ! 😱
No it doesn’t
@@macysondheim well it made it much easier for me.
Im not criticizing. I just dont understand why people grow them because they dont produce avocados. Aesthetic purposes??
Your voice is so nice to listen to! If you ever narrate an audiobook, please let us know 😂
no long intro… thank you for that 🫡
I love growing things and this my first foray into avocados. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you! Agree, simple and easy to understand!
This is my third attempt at growing an avocado plant. So far I see the stem already.
Use a 1 gallon nursery pot. Fill with sandy loam. Top with mulch. It needs heat, humidity, and sunlight. Water it for 1 year. Keep in mind that not every seed, from every fruit, is viable. A year could be wasted if you have a bad seed. That's why growers begin production with 1,000 seeds. If they lose a few hundred, it's okay. Then they have to graft them, where they could lose more trees that don't take the graft. If 2/3 of the seeds are successfully grafted within a year, it will be a success.
Clear and easy to understand :)
Thank you so much! The moment I had the idea of growing an avocado tree, I immediately went to this video! I've already done the first two steps ( Peeling and placing in water) and fingers crossed it will sprout! 🤞🤞 This video was so easy to understand, best tutorial I've seen on how to grow one so far! 🥑🥑✨
Did it grow?
@@gamechanger6385 Not yet unfortunately 🤓
@@applespiceasmr4260 how about now?
I am trying with the cheaper Fuerte avocado instead of the Hass avocado. It already sprouted.
@@TheMisfit It didn't work but it's my first attempt so I'll try again 🤦♀️
Nice AVO knowledge, great stuff.
Well spoken and informative.
Great job. Thank you.
such a great video, easy to follow, lovely accent. keep going really enjoyable.
Very good video. Clear and explanatory. Equivalent of Delia Smith on cooking, instead Daisy Dawes on growing avocados from seed. ❤
Thank you so much for this video, very informative and easy to follow ❤
This video was so helpful!!! I would really like it if you did a video about how to plant lavender! 😀
Thank you! I had done this exactly as you showed but I hadn’t seen this video till today. I was concerned I did something wrong. It took months for the seed to crack and the root to start coming down. I didn’t replace the water every few days I just topped it off. That’s probably why. So I’m glad I found your video thanks again.
I’m doing the same, thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the guide! Defo will plant some avocados soon, now I feel inspired, thanks to you 😌
Nice PFP
How’s it going?
@@skeletonjanitor very well actually thanks for asking! Not all of the seeds sprouted but some of them did and now I have a small “garden” on my balcony 🌱
Thank you so much, I watched this last month and now mine has grown using this method, though it has grown within a month 😊
Appreciate you. Seems like every year i have to look up how to start seed, more so, which way is up. Then i find i already knew that but reinforce ment is nice and u never know what u might learn from another individual. Again thankyou so much. I live in mississippi, during the winter, so far they've all died. Anyway I keep trying
Thank you! This is the best explanation and video I've seen.
Thanks. Excellent explanation
really cool! simple, thank you! 😊😊
I agree with you, plant them in soil when the tap root starts protruding from the bottom
Leaving them it water for too long is a mistake in my opinion.
Excellent! 🌱🥑
THANK YOU FIR EXPLAINING THIS SOOO WELL. IM TRYING TONIGHT👍👍👍❤
Her: Avocados don’t like much water
Also her: proceeds to basically flood the avocado seed 😂
Thank you very much. I have two very tall avo trees. I now realize that I did not pinch the top ends when they were still growing and I have to struggle to reach them. Monkeys are only too glad because they benefit from my toil 😢. Will look after the next seedlings better. Thank you once again.
Thanks for this wonderful video that saved my day! Today is my 1st try to grow avocado tree. Watching this video made me realised that I made a mistake of bottom up the seed! I immediately paused video and swung into action for correction while apologies to the poor seed. Thank you again!
Been a month how Is it growing?
Been 4 months, any updates?
Been 6 months now.. Has it grown?
My avocado is growing well no idea on how this person's avocados growing
22/3/24 done the first step, Thankyou for the video x
Thanku for your good message
Thank you. I'm going in!
Ty so much ur method is the truth im happy I have my own tree
Started the process today hopes it turns to be amaizing from SA 🇿🇦
Hi Daisy, I have few questions..
- I planted 1 pit similar to your with small root at the bottom. I planted it in the same way as you did same container & soil, but it’s not sprouting any stem, it’s been 3-4 weeks - how long did that pit take for you to sprout a stem?
- I planted 2nd pit similar to yours and it has stem, but it’s not producing any leaves. It’s stagnant at its growth - what should I do for the stem to produce leaves?
- when should I put them outdoors ? Can these be grown under grow light?
- How many hours of sunlight ?
- how much to water the pit when it’s at starting stage?
My 3 of 5 avocados seeds cracked on the bottom and i can see stem coming off :D im so happy :D thx for vid advise !!!
Tysm, we needed this info!!
TY so easy to understand 😊
I like how u explain
Thank you for not stating you vid by doing “hi guys can u like and sub” lol those people are sad if I enjoy it i will like and sub. Good work
So 👍 true
Thank you
Great video thanks so much
Nice
The best Avo documentary I have ever seen-Killed them All
Thank youu !! Great vidéo !!!
I got the fattest avo seed I've ever seen so decided to try growing it. It's been around 2 months and haven't seen anything yet so I think it's a dud but I'll try a bit longer. I'd love an avo tree 🥰
Did you get your tree?
Good work.. Very interested
Thanks for the toothpicks is that the one when split becomes a thorn?
Thanks 😁
Thanks
Love 🥑!!!👍🏾
Marvelous
Seems like she gave the avocado too many amounts of water
Thanks so much , Madam . It looks easier to grow Avocados in this way.
You are requested also to throw light about the weather conditions in which these grow up in better conditions. J Sidhu (Canada)
Nice
Nice video
True
Hello, I have a question please! Do you change the water in the jar from the day you put the seed in or you keep the same water? Thank you
i just ate one whole avocado because I DIDNT KNOW THEY BARELY TASTE LILE ANYTHING but the one good thing i got from thay is this avocado seed friend
Question- Can they be later transplanted into a large pot, or are they required to be in the ground?
Soil or water grown while cares they look beautiful either way
How long did it take for your Avocado to grow the stem? Mines is in the tap root stage and I don’t know where to go from here, should I place it in direct sunlight? I used to have it on the window sill but it never got any direct sunlight, I don’t want to dry it out or kill it before it even has a chance to grow. Any help would be appreciated
Mine took 4 months to do the tap root ,be patient mine is about 12 cms . tall now soon I will do a repot .
4 months to just get it to root ? 😢😂😭😭😭😭😭
@@stefanoherwee1831 maybe yours won't take that long
I want to make mines into a house plant. My grandfather use to grow beautiful plants indoors. He never grew fruit on them or put them in dirt
My avo tree took 2 months before i seen the plant first shoots . I stuck in a few steel nails when ot was about 30cm high..oh yes.. I started my plant in a large coffee tin..i will cut out the bottom of the tin in put in in the ground just like that (tin and all)
Is it ok to let it sit out for a couple of days so the skin dries to easily pick off? Or does the skin need picked off while wet?
Hii.. Can we keep the avocado seed on bottle top(filled wd water )without toothpick?
I like that
Just let the avocado seed dry for a few days. It is a lot easier to peel off the dried skin.
Hi you don't need do things just throw the Avocado seed in to pot granty it will grow. I just throw 10 avocado seeds under the fruit tree all have grow.
what happens if its not sunny out? Do you use a lamp?
I have seven avocado plants in my compost pile growing from seeds just thrown into it.
My seed has two small stems. Should I cut one off?
Hi, I started getting some burnt and brown big dots on the leaves after about 2 months since I planted in the soil. What would be reason you guess?
I have the same thing going on . Brown spots, totally brown leaves. Then they dry up & fall off. Not sure why ?!
What happens if you put the toothpick in the side seam and it splits the seed a little? Will it still sprout?
Mine did! Actually sprouted and rooted within 6 weeks.
Do not trench a hole for the root people it can cause the soil to not fully connect woth the root and cause air pockets which can make your root rot hold your seed up and put the dirt in around it.
My school has a avacado tree with not fully grown avocados but people still keep picking them, one day someone picked one and threw it on the ground so I took him home and took out the seed so he can become a big tree
Edit: it didn’t make it but u just recently started again with another seed
You just helped an avocado to achive it's goal, to become a wonderful plant!
You earned my respect.
@@niggaballshd8425 thanks I love avacados
@@niggaballshd8425 such a nice guy
Get a big stick. Stand next to the tree. When someone comes to take an avocado, hit them with the stick.
How long does it take for it to give avocados? And how tall does it have to be? Anybody? Thx
How long is commonly waited when the seed of the avacado is in the water
I put grow rocks in a glass and filled the water to the top of the rocks then set the seed on top ,seed split in a few days.
Good🎉🎉
Does the fruit grow on this plant. I heard the fruit will not grow if u plant it with its seed
So, my seed split in half, I tried to hold it back together with toothpicks and now I have a sprout that’s growing, but no roots are growing underneath lol. Help!
How many years before the plant starts growing fruit?
Personally I don't recommend watering the soil until after planting.
Otherwise it will compress the root(s) too much.
I direct sowed my pit in potting soil mixed with coco peat . water it and put in a humid area .keep soil not wet and leave it, let nature takes it cause.....
mine grew into a stem currently potting it
yeah usually they take weeks for me to see them sprout
but I've been doing this in one of my seeds for almost 2 months now
maybe i should throw it soon too 😞
and tho there's a bigger crack showing i don't see any signs of life yet 😞
❤
Do we need to add anything to the water to give nutrients to the growing seed?
Yes we need to
Thought the roots need darkness? Conflicting videos out there during germination about the sunlight versus putting it in a warm dark area.
Will it actually produce avocados? Does keeping it short reduce the chances of it producing avocados?
I just push them into the ground in my garden and after a while they pop up everywhere.
Tear drop? Don't cry 👽 it's huge
Where can I find a dwarf alvocado plant??
Must it be glass bottle?
How much do you soke the seed
Friday July 28th i’m attempting to grow an avocado tree, i will be back with results
September 18th - i forgot to update! the first one i tried to grow didn’t work, absolutely no change at all, so i tried again around two weeks ago, with a couple more, and one of them started growing a root! still no plant yet, but a root is something!
October 15th - Two of my avocados started growing roots, and they both have little plants now! So 10/10 would recommend
cool
TIP put avocado seed in a container full of water for an hour or more for an easy peel off.
