Ahhhhhhhh! Eureka! Now I get it! It's all about the gravel. Thanks for the interesting information and analysis. I wonder what's lurking beneath all those large gravels on the far side of the river. I have a hunch that there might be some accessible bedrock, and maybe even some one pound plus specimens, just waiting to be uncovered over there. There's only one way to test that hypothesis. Get out there, examine the gravel, and then start digging. Win, lose or draw, it looks like a beautiful spot to spend the day examining gravels, digging, sniping and swinging for the fences. I really enjoyed this video. I hope there will be a sequel. Thanks for posting!
You said don't bother digging when you're at water level... My friend who started me out had me digging in the river itself! I dug and moved rocks until I needed a mask, sluiced it all and, got next to nothing. The hole was 6 by 4 feet, and the gold was just going deeper. One heck of an introduction to gold prospecting, and I'm hooked!
That's what I try to tell people, every time that gravel moves the gold goes deeper. Its very hard to get under the gold if there is water in the hole. Glad to hear your hooked, your life just got a lot better! lol

The key is the distance from the source, the more the gold travels, the more it gets ground up. I try to get as close the where the river has cut threw the old channels. I don't know why but I have never had a problem with my mask sealing. One of my old mining partners used petroleum jelly to seal his mask.
