The new @rodemic Rodecaster Duo is coming out this week!
Let's take a look at whether or not this is just a pared down version of the Rodecaster Pro, or if it offers anything new!
One thing is for certain, it is adorable!!

I forgot to mention the Vesa mounts.
Yes it does have them!!!
Waiting for my pre-order from B&H.. I want that small stand they had on it during their reveal! Seemed to be a Rode branded product but haven't seen any news on it.
I use Rode Unify software. Do u think RODECaster Duo is any different to Rode Unify, please?
Well from a hardware perspective...yes...very much.
That said Unify is very powerful in its own right
Really?????
This will be a huge hit! My guess is that the Rodecaster family is actually a platform: Rode could sell plugins that run on the internal DSP as software downloads. For example, a real-time noise cancellation, or room de-reverb could be an excellent way to provide more value and make more revenue from the current customer base. And how about being able to remotely sync multiple Rodecaster units during a podcast with specific functions for host and guests? I think Rode has huge potential here and I think they know it!
I feel like Rode missed an opportunity to just call it the Rodecaster Adorable Edition! Come on Rode!

@@DarkCornerStudios Perfection. Just take my money!
Or rodecaster mini
I just ordered one yesterday! I am super stoked to be using this as a dedicated livestream audio source to pair with my yolobox pro. This is so exciting! I can now keep my RCP2 in my little home recording studio without needing to disconnect the 9 cables i have ziptied underneath my workflow desk lol.
Exactly the info I was looking for and wonderfully succinct! I think I might be getting one to replace my old goXLR mini!
Thank you for providing this information!
Nice video, so since I am getting into more streaming, podcasting on location or at home. I am so new to this kind of equipment. Could you make a video on actually how to hook it up. With laptop, to camera and mics?? Thank-you
Thanks for this incredibly informative video. I really couldn't see the need for a full Rodecaster Pro II, the Duo fits my needs much better. So, you've inspired me to order one. I'll pick it up in a few days. Very excited to have a nice setup for recording and the like.
Glad I could help!
Great review and video! I'm planning to get the Duo vs the Pro! It seems to work best for me also since I have the PodMic this will be a welcomed addition! Thanks for sharing!🔥
Superb review. Short, sweet, to the freakin' point. Well done, sir!
Thank you!
Hi couple of questions:
Can you still use 3 OG podmics?
Like a usb c to xlr, or connect it wirelessly via wireless go ii using 3.5mm to xlr. Sometimes i have 3 speakers so just wondering if that’s possible.
Lastly, does this still have the audio lag when monitoring like the rcp2 users have?
Thanks for the video!
Do you think this is over kill for just recording an streaming ? Should I just get the wave XLR for that ? Or keep the rode? Have an sm7b
I'm actually stuck between this and a vocaster two, wondering if I will be left kicking myself for spending less money or if I should just even get the vocaster one to launch my podcast and improve audio in videos and keep saving for the rode caster duo or even pro if the need arises to have that many inputs.
Think it would be possible to compare this to a GoXLR/GoXLR mini?
i had the rodecaster pro 2 for less than 5 days, the top right started to peel from the base within that time, it also lacks some features from the GoXLR that would truely put it at the top.
Great info 👍🏾
Given it can connect directly for updates, am i to understand correctly that, once this is setup, a computer is not *required* to operate it?
That is one of my bigger gripes about the GoXLR is if the PC isnt running, the controls do not work so i cant control the audio levels of other devices i have plugged in (ie the 2nd audio input).
(the other big gripe is the LED's do not turn off when i shut down the PC so i had to make a separate profile just to disable them, which i looks like the Rode unit has its own power switch to resolve that, plus its self powered so i can also plus it into a controlled outlet).
Hi
Thinking of running this off a large powerbank, how many watts does it need to run from the power brick supplied.
Great video
Thanks
Hi, im trying to help my son get started with his music. What else do i need to go along with the Ridecaster Duo? I don’t want him to give up! TIA
Looks like ill definitely be selling my RCP2 for the Duo. I work solo when i do my livestreams and use my inputs as follow, input 1 with fader 1= Procaster Mic, input 2 with fader 2= Microsoft Zune for background music, Usb C 2 with fader 3= used for my Smartphone via USB C and finally fader 4= sound effects volume control for the pads. Slider 5 and 6 never been used since day 1 and neither has input 3 and 4 or usb 1. Hopefully i can get a decent sale price for mine to cover the full cost of the duo.
Great video and NEW subscriber here!! Was wondering if you'd recommend this for a 3 person podcast set up? I currently have rode wireless go II mics/receiver and wondering if I could connect and control the 2 wireless rode mics AND add an additional XLR mic to record at the same time? Debating between the Duo or the Pro 2 but specifically need a device to control that kind of set up. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Keep up the great videos!
Sounds like you need the pro2. Duo is mainly intended for 2 mic setup.
I was able to get the RCP II for 599 as an open box display from b&h. The only thing with the Duo that’s a dealbreaker for me is the digital record button as it seems a bit too small. I would have to focus to make sure I touch the exact spot to record, pause, and stop playback. I love the physical button on the RCP II as well as the size.
Do you know if you can use Rodes unify software with the Duo? I saw a video, that you can use unify with the streamer X.
If rode put hdmi input on this cutie like streamerx, that would be killer
I love your work! 😃
Thank you! Cheers!
I have an iRig Pre 2, that allows me to connect an XLR mic to a phone (via TRRS) while direct monitoring. I wonder if using this with the TRRS port will allow for a 3rd XLR mic with direct monitoring.
@DarkCornerStudios I would like to send mic input back to PC via XLR ( sure it can do that) I also would like to be able to be able to send sound out from the PC to the Rode where it would allow me to have mixer type control going to a power amp. Can it do that? Does the USB send signal both to a PC and receive sound from a PC?
currently I have a GoXLR and I have 3 consoles and two PC connected, can I do the same with this or will I need the Non-Mini version?
Will this rodecaster duo be able to work with the Streamer X? I want to do a live stream with 2 mics for interviews with the Rode NT 5 by xlr. Will I be able to live stream and have 2 mics going thru the DUO and video thru the Streamer X?
Great video and education on Rode products.
I don't know if they will be integrating the StreamerX with their other gear.
No word as of yet
Just got the device. Many issues I am experiencing. One HW quality issue is the rotary knob does not work. I cannot change any effect , date, virtual channel fader.
Headphone output has constant hiss. It is annoying still rose didn’t fix for many years.
Then a couple of SW issues. Custom routing does not work. I disabled system sound output or mic output but still I can hear the sound. Only fader reduces the sound volume.
MAC Rode Central app does not correctly fetch device configuration. So it is basically unusable right now.
Note related to the video but...when are we getting a full review of the Sennheiser e835? 😁
Can I connect both a Casio PX-S1100 electronic piano and a microphone for UA-cam streaming to the Rodecaster Pro Duo?
Can you put seperate audio chanels for both chat and music?
Can the DJI Mic be connected to the Duo? I know the Rode GoMics can connect. I'm considering this unit for live events. I have the RCP and the RCP2, but I like the smaller form factor for travel.
Great question!
Good idea to ask @rodemics themselves .
I'll reach out to check though
If the rodecaster pro 1 and 2 wasn't so expensive I would have love to complain about the rodecaster duo price but I can't because not only is it worth the price but it's also less expensive than what was there before
How are the headphone outputs compared to the Streamer X? I have a Streamer X but the headphone output way more noisy than i would prefer. Escpecially with lower impedance headphones?
That's weird.
I have low impedance headphones and I do not have that experience.
They are fine...though I believe they are the same
Hey i just got the Donner Pc-02 , I feel like it could be a great competitor for the podcasters and mixers out there
Looking into it now!!
Thanks for the vid. I have a GOXLR and the thing I love about it and what I don't believe the DUO can compete with is all the virtual I/O. The Duo I think has 3 total virtual I/O across two USB-C ports. The DUO also doesn't have a routing table lile the GOXLR which is brilliant. Thoughts?
From what I seen, yes it does have routing like the GoXLR
Also goxlr doesnt support macos.
In Belgium, due to popular demand, they already priced the Duo at 740 Euro (about 800 dollars) with limited availability. The rodecaster pro 2 can be bought from reputable belgium online shop for 650 euro (710 dollars). Insane...
is the RODE DUO compatible with the VIdeo Mico Go II mics?
I asked Rode if they’re going to make a dustcover for the Duo and I got a response today saying that “We currently do not have an ETA on when this accessory will be released, but it is in the works.” So, yay?!
😂 love the intro
I might have overlooked it, but can you hook up a phone to it?
I have a question that I cant seem to get the answer for. Does this unit have the VESA mount like the Rode Caster Pro 2?
No.
Doubtful it would work with such a large unit too
Subbed from the intro alone lmao😂😂😂😂
Love it!
Great vid! Can you share the actual dimensions of the Duo, please? Thanks!
9.25"x9"
And 2.25" height
@@DarkCornerStudios Thank you so much!
@@CharlotteDrew happy to help!
Can I connect it to 2 PC's? Not a dual PC setup but my video editing PC and gaming PC that I don't use at the same time. Same mic and headphones and all the features of the rodecaster duo shared between 2 PC's. I hope you understand what I mean and I hope you have the time to answer.
Yes...but the second USB is JUST a stereo feed
Thank you @@DarkCornerStudios
An odd naming strategy, the small one is called Duo cause it's limit is two mics. But the larger version is not called Quadro although the limit is four mics. It's called ||...and that's the same as two or kinda the same as Duo. Røde's marketing department has some work to do here. May I suggest Mini?
I bought it this week and I'm having a problem that I can't solve, I'm leaving it here in case someone can help me. When it comes to monitoring myself, I hear double all the time. I get the feeling that it is if the audio is saturated, but I go from not hearing myself at all to directly hearing myself double and canned. I can't find the middle ground no matter how much I mute channels during routing.
Do u need to hook up focusrite and sound cloud to use this
No, you can record to a memory card or connect it to your computer. No cloud lifter needed, the built in pre amps are powerful enough to power just about any microphone.
Can you provide me with a link to the multitrack drivers on the Rode website. I can't seem to see it.
It's right at the bottom of the product page...under downloads
@@DarkCornerStudios How do you install it. Is this installed on your computer or the RODECaster Duo? Is this a Windows only software? How is this different from the Rodecaster Central? It is not very clear on the website what this is for.
Here’s a slight dilemma: what if you can can a Rodecaster Pro II for $499?
Buy it!!
Not me pausing the video on the BSOD at 0:20 to see if you stuck an easter egg in there. Didn't look like it, but maybe I should check again...
Damn....I missed that opportunity
@@DarkCornerStudios There's always a next time... 😜
Why is it not battery powered to make it portable????????
In NZ the duo is $995 and I found a pro II for $1100. Hmmm.
My main problem is the price. €618,- for the duo, and €718,- for the Pro II. (local store) That is not much of a discount.
Do you have a European/euro link aswell
The main rode link I have in the comments is universal
Can this be powered by USB only?
No...it requires a power supply
Also...long time brother!
@@DarkCornerStudios Indeed, it's been a while. Hope all is well on your end. My gear is doing great, though I am sort of kinda, looking at other stuff, just in case I were to upgrade. I have Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen, and a Shure SM7B. I might switch to the 4th gen Scarlett, and get a AV RE27N/D
@@Philminator yeah...the new 4th gen looks sweet.
As for the 27...it is a great mic...though not sure how much of a difference you will get over your current setup.
Especially since the 4th gen has plenty of gain
BUT... unless I missed it, there's something you didn't address..... does it have the same converters as the pro II ?
Yes, I did bring it up.
Same Revolution preamps.
@@DarkCornerStudios Read my reply again... I asked if you mentioned the "converters"
@@MikeG-js1jt ah.
I'd assume so.
Not likely that they would keep everything the same...only to engineer completely different converters.
if this can power 250ohm headphones, then we're in business!
Yes...it can
Sad thing is, here.. it costs exactly the same (some places even more) than the pro 2.
Not anymore it’s lower then the pro 2
@@donjohnson19 ye, very little. Not worth it, I'll be going with the Roland Bridge Cast instead.
So, I have the RCP II and when this was announced, I immediately thought that I was going to be interested in switching mine out for this one. But my ONE issue is workflow. For my podcast, I use fader 1 for my mic. 2 for USB1, 3 for USB1Chat, 4 for USB secondary, 5 for Bluetooth, and 6 for soundpads. I rarely use BT, but I'd be down 2 faders. I'd be looking at using the virtual faders (which I have XLR2 on right now, but would ultimately be going without a fader for either soundpads, BT, or XLR2. Only getting 6 faders (including virtual) makes it a bit more difficult to jump in. I would have to sacrifice something. Which would probably be moving sound pads to the Stream Deck. But then... what would I do with 6 sound pads? We could cut those out, too. haha.
The only reason I say this... is the missing faders is the ONLY downside to the Rodecaster Duo. =[
I would even love the headSET jack on the front. But now we're introducing ANOTHER channel if a headset is being used.
Did they fix the live monitor latency problem?
can we compare this to boss gigster 8or5, if 32bit worth
I did a video on the Gigcaster 5.
Not really much of a comparison...very much apples vs oranges
@@DarkCornerStudios I watched that, however, I am still kinda struggling since they are at the same price point. My purpose it looking a device to finish a live streaming busking on smart phone, so in my situation both device get the job done, but they have benefits on different way, for rode, I have wireless go pro, and procaster so, procaster duo is more compatible, but considering what I am doing is more musical streaming 32 bit gigcaster has its own strength... So I might want to learn more about them to see which one I should finally turn to...how about the control user experience? I know you are kinda struggled with boss one, but how about the in machine setup without connecting to computer? And which one has more flexibility on customization?
@@rainy2299219 32 bit float does nothing for you as a streamer
Contrarian (sorry/not sorry) but if the price was maybe $300-350 I'd agree with you.
Adorable as it is, I just don’t see the value at the price. If it was another hundred bucks cheaper maybe.
That wouldn't make sense to the rest of the field.
That puts it way to close in price to the last Gen...and things like Vocaster Two
Only thing bringing down the price will be competition
500 is too expensive. 400 would have been perfect
I wish you would go more into submixes and the uses/setup for game streamers & content creators, yes yes.. I know, that isn't exactly you, but this is something a lot of people in general would love to see and benefit from knowing & seeing what it can, especially compared to things like the Beacn Mix Create, Wave Link software etc. I did watch your review of the original (and a ton of other videos), where you didn't get into what I just mentioned either, so.. maybe an idea for a future video.
I do see rumors starting to spread about a Go XLR 2 and sub-mixes for the units, which would make sense and also allow for the exact options I mention.. like the Beacn Mix Create (and wave link software with e.g. Streamdeck+) is perfect in the matter of you being able to quickly switch between your audio and the audience audio, using the same dials for adjusting.. this obviously isn't a method that works on faders.. or does it? because it would in fact work on the Go XLR, as it has motorized faders, so it would be possible to do this and simply have them adjust themselves to what level each submix for Monitor / Audience mix is.
Not about it NOT being me, but more because it has been done by EVERYONE already.
Considering this thing is EXACTLY the same as the RCP2, it is literally just rehashing older info.
And as I have found with retention, well, the video dies real quick with stuff like that.
@@DarkCornerStudios I disagree, I have specifically been looking for this and watched all the big youtubers (and some small), with the rodecaster and not a single person mentions and shows the work of submixes, adjustments etc. with the windows sound settings, OBS etc.
The closest I've found was "The Provoked Prawn" who just talked a little bit about it and OBS, but nothing really showed it.
@@Somtric I believe Tom Buck covered it with the RCP2
Man no need to slap me with a BSOD I already have that happen enough. It is past 8 so it is too late for that to happen now. Past 3 days at around 8 bloop.
Damn.
My last PC was like that.
First Gen Ryzen was rough...lol
Is there anybody experiencing RC Duo getting stucked at boot screen, just like nearly 99% complete and stop there, like forever?
Have you called Rode?
@@DarkCornerStudios I just did, and they asked me to send it back to them. So, I just sent it back.
@harysuwanda2529 yeah...they are good at replac8ng when issues come up
@@DarkCornerStudios Well, at the moment, I can only keep my fingers crossed, hopefully, they can fix it or send me a replacement. Great product, I agree, but the firmware is unreliable, also I just noticed a few days ago, that the ASIO driver doesn't work, I need to use ASIO4ALL to be able to use multitrack in OBS.
No soup for you!!!
No me normalices el precio por su uso... es muy cara
B&H just send me a delivery email! 😊
Yay!!
Me too. Can't wait to get. Keeping my RCP 2 also :)
