This game is super underrated, probably one of my favorite games of all time, love the unique spin on turn based combat, the story’s depth and twists, the attention to detail and seemingly endless side context. One of the best rpg games to date
I was always interested in these games but my brother was the one with the Gamecube and he was tired with card based RPGs after he beat Lost Kingdom 1 and never got either of them, and now my physical copy of the Switch remasters finally came in the mail just in time for the weekend.
Admittedly the voice acting is cheesy, but it doesn't detract from the experience for me. There's a bizarre charm about the bad voice acting, at least for me. I'm really happy to see that Baten Kaitos 1 and 2 are getting remastered for Switch!
Ohhh wow. I had remembered playing a really fun, card-based JRPG on the Gamecube that was set up in a Walmart and I always asked my mother if we could go to that Walmart if we had to do any shopping. I couldn't remember the name of this game for years though, so it's amazing to finally see just what I was playing :D
This game felt like the visual spiritual successor to Chrono Cross. Not story wise or anything. But the visual style felt right at home with the visuals used in Chrono Cross. But an amazing game in its own right.
was best game i played on the game cube none of my friends had it only me .. the days with THPS 1/2 the resident evils monkey ball kids today wont ever get them
Awesome review! The pr bgs from this game is partially what drew me to it. But as an MTG and Battle Network player, the card battle system also attracts me
I'm over a year late in coming across this review, but you sir have perfectly explained why this is one of the best gamecube games, period. I had discovered the game in 2004, when the clerk at my local video game store I frequented at the time gave me a demo disc while purchasing for my then starting gamecube collection. I was instantly interested from the demo, and wanted the game. Unfortunately, perhaps do to the issue you mentioned of low sales, I couldn't find the game for years, and the one or two times I was able to find it, I couldn't afford it. It wasn't until 2011 during a trip to gamestop that I found it on the gamecube shelf, and instantly snatched it up. it quickly became my favorite RPG. I know I'm not the only one here who was excited when the whisperings and murmurs started surfacing about an HD remaster, so when they officially announced it, I let out a scream of excitement, damn near scaring my friends of whom I was in a voice call with at the time, made even more excited by the extra bit of news that I hadn't heard in the rumor mill, that it's sequel-prequel, Baten Kaitos Origins would be packaged along side it as you mentioned the bad voice acting being an actual positive for the game (totally agree, btw. I had mentioned it as being bad but in a good way years ago in a top 5 RPG podcast I was in), it's a shame that the remaster will not be bringing the english voice acting with it, but I think overall, it will still be a great remaster
Gotcha Force, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2&3, Star Fox Assault, Pokémon Gale of Darkness, Kirby's Air Ride, Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, Smash Bros Melee etc...
still can't believe this is being re-released, glad to see it get a second chance with people, I've tried to play it a few times, never reached the weirder dungeons but it was such a fun game
Aside from the port of skies of Arcadia I can’t think of a better RPG than Baten Kaitos on the Gamecube* So epic and memorable. The battle system is very unique even if a bit long winded making the game take much longer to go through but it was a very special game with so much to enjoy and get enveloped in. I loved it.
I am glad the Internet does not forget that masterpiece. One of my favourite games fromy teenage years and one of the best soundtracks ever.

god tier music, awesome backdrops, great battlesystem, nice story. when i played it when it was released i didnt care too much about the campyness or the quality of the voiceacting. my main problems were that there is only an intro cinematic and none during the game and the world seemd too 2d, and one had to use a microscope to make out anything of the visuals sometimes because the characters on the maps and in the cities were too zoomed out.
Yeah I always assumed the Tinniness was because of the way our character (the spirit) heard or interpreted the voices of people in the world. Kinda like how you hear your own voice if your ears are covered. Shame the English dub won’t be in the re-master, but happy to be able to play it again all the same 😊
I don't have a source for this, but I'm pretty sure the "tinny" effect on the voices were an intentional choice. Since you (the player) were playing the role of the guardian spirit, the idea was that all of the characters you hear are being heard from whatever spiritual world you're currently in. They were going for an eerie, otherworldly effect, but they never explicitly communicate this, so it just sounds shoddy. As for the performances themselves... maybe just a combination of poor direction or not hiring professional VAs?
Good point. Yeah, I remember reading this on a message board but I couldn't find any kind of proof. It's an interesting idea. I kind of like the myths and different justifications around the VO, it adds a 'lost in translation' vibe that feels very quaint and very typical of GameCube-era games.
I've heard that too. It's frustrating--the sound quality is just fine in the opening cinematic, which has me believe they knew they needed better sound.
I was originally going to get it's prequel first, but I had to turn it down because it was very expensive. I heard the original Baten Kaitos is actually affordable and the perfect start for any newcomer of the series.
Yes, the original is more affordable, the combat system is easier to learn and the environments, pacing and strategy are all better in the original too. The prequel is good, has very interesting and hectic combat, however, the story relies heavily on being familiar with the original so start there first.
@@avideogameodyssey3204 Yeah, I will definitely get the first game before it gets too expensive. I remember the prequel being around 40 to 50 bucks years ago, but the pandemic skyrocketed it's price, now costing over 150 which is infuriating. I really wanna play Monolith Soft's holy grail on the Gamecube.
Im not from North America so i dont understand what you mean by "CAMP", like.. something thats kinda bad but endearing? if so what does the portrair art has to do with camp? great video though! ive always wondered if this game was any good
Yeah, exactly, camp but endearing, and usually excessive in some way - I would say the portraits are kind of exceesive. Oh and thanks for watching, I am actually from England!
I originally played it on a Gamecube with component. However, the easiest way for me to capture this footage was via Dolphin emulator and I was unsure what would be best for viewers, giving the video the clean look it has hear, or sticking with the less appealing but more authentic resolution the actual game has.
I feel you styill undersold this game. Almost nobody mentions the fact that some card change over time. I don't know any other game that has any function like this.
The original opening cinematic had different voice actors and I was super excited when I heard it. Then the voice actors they obviously went with were a significant step down.
@@hunger4wonder yes I just looked it up a minute ago. Search the E3 2004 trailer and you should be able to tell the difference in voice quality right away.
@@SeveredLegs Just checked it out and yeah, it's much better. It's such a shame. It's also a shame a 3rd one never got to be made. They were supposed to be a trilogy i think.
One of the best RPGs of all time and definitely the best combat systems to this date that only very few games come even close to. My only problem with the game was and always will be, it's way to easy. There are like 2 fights in the whole game that can even pose a challenge (if you have a bad deck) and if you are well leveled, have a decent deck and have a bit of luck to get the right numbers you can literally kill the final boss in a single attack. Sadly Baten Kaitos Origins sucks hard, it's like they didn't even understand what made their game so good in the first place.
I recently got this game for around 30 dollars disc only but look great no scratches I keep them safe all my games on a cd case and i gotta say when I first started I laughed at the voice acting I love cheesy goofy yet bad voice acting they sound like a 4kids dub love it lol
Hey, I got about 25 hours (halfway) through Origins. The battle system is incredibly unique and fun, and the story seemed like it was moving around some very interesting territories, but I found the pacing really slow and the re-used locales from the first game really bogged things down for me and kind of killed my enthusiasm after a while. I definitely want to pick it up again soon and have another crack at it.
@@avideogameodyssey3204 The game's voice acting for BTO is quite memorable. Every character's voice actor(s) nailed the mark, unlike the first game. It's the tale that I found more memorable, 15 years later.
BK was the worst RPG and one of the worst games I've ever played. It's a hard pass on the remasters. The battle mechanics are just so obtuse and chance based that they suck all enjoyment from the game.
Friends we've finally been acknowledged! I'm so excited for the remasters 🎉
I loved this game so much, but I don’t know anyone else who played it. I’m glad to see it get some love!
This game along with Tales of Symphonia and Final Fantasy X were my introductions to jrpgs. It’s been my favorite genre ever since!

Just started my first ever journey with BK this past week after getting it for a STEAL on eBay! Can’t wait to tear into it!
They just announced the remaster for Switch!
Here's hoping a remaster is announced in a couple days.
Is a year good enough?
Lol
Just bought this game for 40€, such a cool looking game, cant wait to play it (the original, not the remaster)
Campy is exactly the word that describes baten kaitos best. Also the Story is pretty damn good and original, so thats a 6th reason
Nothing wrong with Camp
I'm glad to know there's someone who shares my enthusiasm for this game!
I’m looking forward to playing this game for the first time this year. I love Monolith Soft.
"Baten Kaitos is distinctive and unforgettable, yet the game has been forgotten."
In case it hasn't been said yet: the voices are much better mixed if you change the sound options from Stereo to Surround.
Ok bestie you popped offfff on this one yassss
