VPNs are basically proxying data - the only difference is that it takes control of the internet connection & forces all requests through it, whereas a proxy has to be individually set up on each app/software you want to be routed.
Both have their advantages. A proxy is good for when you want specific applications to tunnel through a remote server without affecting everything else, while a VPN is good for making all connections route through the server - especially in software that may not have a proxy setting.
Just started using them this week. So far, very happy with the service. I was able to access TV shows in another country very easily. Installed it on my desktop and android and it works seamlessly. There are some websites that don't function well with the VPN on, but I found that it was very easy to instantly kill the connection and re-connect. I have had to do that a few times. Overall I feel more secure now. Also, the chat support is available 24-7 and is very good.

I’ll genuinely never go back to a free VPN ever again... the difference is staggering... I was dubious as to whether I could watch US Netflix from Europe (or indeed anywhere), but I literally can! Washington DC server works best for me.
Also... 0:41 - is that a refrigerator? Don’t make me have to make myself sound a fool and ask what application a VPN connection could possibly have..! I’m sure it’s there for effect 😉

Just use TOR. And maybe operate your own exit node using a Raspberry Pi.
Why?
1st: You never know if the VPN provider tells governments or anybody else your true ip address im it's for 'national security' reasons. In the TOR-Network only the entry guard knows your true ip address, the next nodes don't, and the exit node and the webserver of course don't know either.
2nd: You can trust open-source-software more than a closed-source-VPN
