You may think a VPN and Proxy are similar, because they have a similar end result: Hiding your IP address. But the way they do this is very different, and they cannot be used in the same way and by the same software. They are also very different in terms of security and encryption. This video goes over the difference between VPNs and different protocols used in Proxy servers. By the end, you'll be well informed and know whether to use a VPN or Proxy.

Great explanation of the differences. I've used free proxies before when coding webscrapers for my clients. That way they could scrape a website and not have their ip blocked if found out.

wouldnt that make navigation less secure than using only a vpn?
I originally thought the same thing but after this video it seems kind of redundant. a VPN generally seems better (obviously i'm no expert). Even so if you want quality products you have to pay for them both.

When VPNs first hit the scene, encryption wasn't the main purpose. Back then they were usually hosted by a third party and were often half way across the world. People would buy multiples, just so they could be "truly anonymous." In other words, it was before we all realized that that doesn't exist. We had switcher software configured to switch connections every 30-60 minutes.. this was right around the time that TOR was at the peak of its popularity.
So how does one defeat ebay from catching ur location when they sniff your network and recognize vpns?

I would literally only ever use my own proxy. Sometimes malicious web servers may inject proxy settings into your browser forcing your browser to use their proxy, and like Joe said, start injecting ads into your web traffic. Coming from a network engineer, just use VPNs if you're concerned about security.
By this point after having researched all of this I honestly don't know how can one NOT use a VPN in the first place. Like there's just too much at risk.

Hi Thio, you mentioned DNS leaks. But doesn't the proxy do the DNS look up instead of your browser? Doesn't the browser just send the hostname+port to the proxy, and the proxy ends up doing the DNS lookup?
What if I am under a NAT, will SSH not be slightly secure/ more secure?

Im happy that you talked about DNS because you're absolutely correct. DNS is going to try and resolve which ever way it can, if you're changing your connection route to the Internet over a proxy and DNS isn't being filtered correctly, you can end up reaching out to a malicious site without realizing it. Useful situation for proxies: When I was younger, I used to play a game that was locked for my country, so I had to use a proxy to connect to a server on a country that was supported by the game so I could play. There were other solutions but the proxy was the best in terms of ping, which was very important for an action game. The email and password I used for my game account were not related with any of my other accounts so I wasn't really worried about getting hacked, especially since the good items were hard locked to my character and needed real money to be unlocked. I did get hacked once and somebody stole my character's money tho, and I didn't share my email or password with anyone, so it might've been because of the proxy connection.

One possible use for a free proxy that I can think of is when you get an IP-based ban on some forum and just want to spam on it for a little bit longer. You use the proxy to hide your IP, so you get full access to the site, make a throwaway account and spam.
Although, if you have a dynamic IP, then even that isn't needed - just reboot your router.

If I use a proxy through an application only, would the only data likely to be compromised be the details I enter through that application? And nothing else stored or my computer or other applications since I'm not using a proxy for those?

Incorrect, the essential aspect of a VPN is *not* accessing any server indirectly. It is used to establish a network of computers that are not in a LAN to allow them communicate between themselves.

How about using a socks5 through a vpn login? I'm looking for something to use on 1 specific program on my pc but not mess with everything else like the vpn software seemed to be doing on occasion.

If you have a VPN as an extension, do all applications on your computer still go through the VPN, or just the browser traffic goes through the VPN. Thanks a lot and love your videos!

If I'm sending an email to someone using a VPN, the recipient would need a password to read my message. Would I send that passcode to the recipient using U. S. mail (snail mail) before sending my email?
The VPN doesn't encrypt your emails for you. It just encrypts your activities between your computer and the VPN servers. You'd only need a password to an email if YOU encrypt the message of the email.

Are free public VPN servers secure? If I use a random person on the internet's personal VPN server, is there a chance that the server's owner can intercept the data that I'm sending/receiving through his server (like passwords and stuff), and read, or even write to it?

Proxies are good in China where the VPNs are super slow. Proxies are quicker.

If you ask me which one is better? It's using a proxy. Why? It doesn't encrypt my data like VPN does. Proxies hide internal clients from an external network, bypass an ISP proxy by setting the proxies on my browser and redirecting my location to other location. :)

arvidsniper yes, some take up less memory than others though. You just need to find some that don’t take up much (I used to use trendmicro but now I use avast which doesn’t take up much memory on my computer)

If you're layering protection, Proxychain.
One thing maybe wrong, proxy will not leak dns related things, normally there's no need to launch dns query when you use proxy. Proxy will do it for you.
What about using tor's socks 5 encryption proxies for browsing...is that any secure ?
Casual User That's a local SOCKS proxy provided by Tor to provide a gateway for applications with SOCKS4/5 support to use Tor, and it wouldn't be exposed to the outside unless you forward the port outward while it's running. Can't say the same about the apps though.
