When VPNs first hit the scene, encryption wasn't the main purpose. Back then they were usually hosted by a third party and were often half way across the world. People would buy multiples, just so they could be "truly anonymous." In other words, it was before we all realized that that doesn't exist. We had switcher software configured to switch connections every 30-60 minutes.. this was right around the time that TOR was at the peak of its popularity.
I would literally only ever use my own proxy. Sometimes malicious web servers may inject proxy settings into your browser forcing your browser to use their proxy, and like Joe said, start injecting ads into your web traffic. Coming from a network engineer, just use VPNs if you're concerned about security.
By this point after having researched all of this I honestly don't know how can one NOT use a VPN in the first place. Like there's just too much at risk.

Great explanation of the differences. I've used free proxies before when coding webscrapers for my clients. That way they could scrape a website and not have their ip blocked if found out.
just here to say that free VPNs are terrible, paid ones (or even better, your own) ones are better and don't leave you running the risk of getting spied on/caught!
Useful situation for proxies: When I was younger, I used to play a game that was locked for my country, so I had to use a proxy to connect to a server on a country that was supported by the game so I could play. There were other solutions but the proxy was the best in terms of ping, which was very important for an action game. The email and password I used for my game account were not related with any of my other accounts so I wasn't really worried about getting hacked, especially since the good items were hard locked to my character and needed real money to be unlocked. I did get hacked once and somebody stole my character's money tho, and I didn't share my email or password with anyone, so it might've been because of the proxy connection.
One possible use for a free proxy that I can think of is when you get an IP-based ban on some forum and just want to spam on it for a little bit longer. You use the proxy to hide your IP, so you get full access to the site, make a throwaway account and spam. Although, if you have a dynamic IP, then even that isn't needed - just reboot your router.
With a BB(BlackBerry) cell phone, is still the safest ones out there. BlackBerry, has sold a lot of what they had invented to be used on there phones to Google, just to keep the company from going out of business. Some BB's, use android software, but they still are using BB's internet, phone calls, texts software for checking if it is safe or not, but you can turn that off. No VPN's needed with BB's. BB's software is great, but not all their phones are made very good and not made to break like Apple cell phones are and Apple cell phones cases, don't really help out too much either. 😕😕😕
If you ask me which one is better? It's using a proxy. Why? It doesn't encrypt my data like VPN does. Proxies hide internal clients from an external network, bypass an ISP proxy by setting the proxies on my browser and redirecting my location to other location. :)

Hi Thio, you mentioned DNS leaks. But doesn't the proxy do the DNS look up instead of your browser? Doesn't the browser just send the hostname+port to the proxy, and the proxy ends up doing the DNS lookup?

Im happy that you talked about DNS because you're absolutely correct. DNS is going to try and resolve which ever way it can, if you're changing your connection route to the Internet over a proxy and DNS isn't being filtered correctly, you can end up reaching out to a malicious site without realizing it. Never use free VPN:s, they often log your traffic. A pretty important point. I'm using VPN often and it's super fast, allmost as fast as my original connection. I've never used a proxy that's fast before I tried some SOCKS5 proxys as an extra layer on my VPN connection in the browser.
One thing maybe wrong, proxy will not leak dns related things, normally there's no need to launch dns query when you use proxy. Proxy will do it for you.
The best thing i belive is to do your own proxy server with your own Vpn ip adress.... If you pay a vpn provider they often use one ip vpn adress for many costumers... So be your own vpn server provider is the best thing 👍.... Yes is more technical to of course....

One thing is for certain, Joe. You can do everything possible to protect your data, but if hackers want it, they'll get it. Happened to me, and now my Windows OS is wiped out. Hell, I might even have a wiped HDD. I won't be able to know until I can get a substantial amount of money.

It's easy to talk well about VPNs if you are sponsored up to the teeth with one. VPN is nothing more than a glorified proxy. The $ month you pay for the service doesn't even pay the lawyers' coffee, so expect them to provide all the information they need. And to tap into your connection is as easy as finding different access point. Everything has go out somewhere.

The VPN doesn't encrypt your emails for you. It just encrypts your activities between your computer and the VPN servers. You'd only need a password to an email if YOU encrypt the message of the email.
