As a theatre kid, it brings such joy to watch you watch movies based on musicals. It reminds me of the way that I first felt watching them. It's stunning.
In The Heights was my favorite film of 2021! This film deserved so much better at the box office, mainly because of Warner Bros.’ HBO Max day and date strategy, which caused it to sadly flop. Even at the Oscars, this film was ignored, largely because of West Side Story (which is another incredible film as well, but still).
Whew. Nina's song Breathe makes me ugly cry every time, it's so powerful. Glad you loved this, it was the first move I took my parents to see when things were still so rough and the theater was disappointingly empty
YES, I LOVE this movie!!! Edit: And now I’m crying, and I need to rewatch this movie as soon as I finish watching your reaction. Also, I don’t know if you mention it in the uncut reaction, but when Nina’s singing her song and an older couple sings “Welcome home!” towards the beginning, that couple is Lin-Manuel’s parents, Luis Miranda and Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda. Edit 2: Also, the ice cream truck guy that fights with the piragua guy is Christopher Jackson, the original Benny and George Washington in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton, Abuela Claudia is Olga Merediz, the same actress who played the part on Broadway, and she and Carla, Stephanie Beatriz, were two of the voices in Encanto. Olga was Abuela and Stephanie was Mirabel.
@@cniknik9863 it's a lot of rap, but more like in this story, it's a type of rap that is often palatable to non-fans. And there are some really great songs beyond the rap...
Some fun facts about this one: 1) Olga Merediz, who played the Abuela, was the only actress from the original Broadway version of In The Heights to reprise her role for the film. She was also the singing voice of the Abuela in Lin Manuel's "Encanto." 2) Two other actors from the original Broadway production ( Lin Manuel himself who was Usnavi and Christopher Jackson who played Benny) ended up playing the Piragüero and his rival Mr. Softee Truck Driver (Christopher Jackson was also the singing voice of the Chief in Lin Manuel's "Moana"). 3) Many other background dancers found in the film were also background dancers in the original Broadway productions of both "In the Heights" and "Hamilton." 4) Stephanie Beatriz (who played Carla in this movie) was Mirabel in /'Encanto." 5) Daphne Rubin-Vega (who played Daniella) was the original Mimi in the Broadway version of "Rent" (and even won the Theatre World Award for her work). 6) "In the Heights" was filming in New York at the same time as Stephen Spielberg's revival of "West Side Story." Both were even released the same year as each other.
Aw, man! That was cancelled? Yeah, I was really interested in seeing her as Batgirl after seeing what a great actress she is in "In the Heights." That's disappointing.
Oh I'm so excited you're watching this! I liked it a lot but it's honestly nothing compared to how obsessed I am with Hamilton so I'd be absolutely thrilled if you were to check that one out in the future!! To me it's one of Lin's specialities to mix music genres within his work so there's a lot of rap/hip-hop stuff in Hamilton as well but like here mixed with more typical musical songs, like you I'm not usually into rap at all but his lyricism and rhyme schemes and the way it's performed are just so intricate and amazing that it hooked me from the very first second
This was the first film that I saw in theaters after COVID and it was a phenomenal experience. I loved it! Often times when I'm in a swimming pool, I think of "96,000." It baffles me how many people have never heard of the Broadway show "In the Heights." I was excited when this film was announced in 2020, but I had never heard of "In the Heights" before. And then COVID hit so it wasn't released that year, but I watched "Crazy Rich Asians" for the first time so I would be familiar with the kind of movies Jon M. Chu has done, and the "Hamilton" movie came out instead. In 2021, I educated myself in the show "In the Heights" so I would be familiar with the story when I saw the movie in theaters. I once told my mom, "Anthony Ramos and Melissa Barrera did a great job in 'In the Heights,' but I think we can all agree that Gregory Diaz (Sonny) was the real star of the show." 2:51 The salon girl on the right is Stephanie Beatriz, the voice of Mirabel in "Encanto," also composed by Lin Manuel Miranda.
My grandmother passed away last year. Her story is basically the same as Abuela Claudia's. As was her personality. A Latina woman with a heart of gold who loved God and loved her family. Immigrated from Mexico dirt poor. Struggled to fit in in America. Found a job as a maid. Then as an LVN. Worked her way from ground up. Oldest of 10 siblings and was like a mother to them. Then when my parents were too busy for me, she became a second mother to me for 19 years. She was always the voice of wisdom. Encouragement. Support. And near endless positivity. It was a few months after the time this movie came out that her battle with cancer finally took her life. I still weep whenever I hear Paciencia y Fe. I bawled when I first saw this live. To me, part of my nana is always in this movie. And I'm so grateful for that. I hope I can keep part of her alive too. Because it truly was like a light went out when she left. I miss her so much. And I pray one day I can see her again. Paciencia y Fe.
The blackout scene was actually pretty different between the broadway and movie. I’m kinda glad that they changed it. It had a much darker tone (like when they’re about to light the fireworks, Sonny and Pete were using Roman candles to keep people from looting usnavi’s shop.)
Hello Nick so good to see you! Hope you're doing well and staying safe. Tonight I'm watching Bull Durham and Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation Of Christ. Wednesday, Gods And Monsters, Inland Empire Thursday, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Devotion Friday, All Quiet On The Western Front, Steven Spielberg's The Fablemans Saturday, Babylon, MEGAN Sunday, PLANE, Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes Monday, Ace In The Hole, Singin In The Rain Tuesday, Stanley Kubrick's Paths Of Glory, War And Peace.

Please react to The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston + Kevin Costner! Or react to Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts! Both great films that I think you’d love ♥️
Live-action musical films are pretty iffy to me (save for a few I actually liked) but In the Heights proved to be worth watching and listening to. Lead star Anthony Ramos sure stepped beyond his early work like Hamilton (coincidentally reunited here with Lin-Manuel Miranda) and A Star Is Born (with Lady Gaga). Worth it!
Three of the actors from this musical film would come together again for a future musical that didn’t take long to release in the same year. Piragua Man (Lin-Manuel), Abuela Claudia (Olga Merediz), and Carla (Stephanie Beatriz) would reunite for the Disney animated musical Encanto.

While I totally understand your ambiguity about musical movies going forward, I'd like to let you know that Phantom of the Opera is widely regarded as one of the WORST musical-to-movie adaptations ever. If you didn't like it, don't worry, pretty much no one else does either.
the movie got backlash because of the lack of afro latinos in the main cast which is what contributed to the movie flopping. washington heights is a mostly afro dominican neighborhood and yet the casting doesn’t reflect that
As a Caribbean Latino from a very racially mixed family I thought that backlash was petty, silly, and not justified. The reason the movie didn't do well was because it was released when loads of theaters were closing because of the pandemic.
@@torontomame it absolutely was justified. i have visited washington heights before and there are way more black people in that neighborhood than what the movie depicted

Yes, this movie made me as a theater kid sooo happy!!! It was such a great film!!!
Lin Manuel Miranda played Usnavi in the original broadway production
This is basically a passing of the torch from the previous Usnavi and the current one.
And Anthony Ramos played Sonny in the Original Broadway Production
This show won the Tony for Best Musical. Seeing it live was to be sucked into its energy and vibrancy.
