In many of the stage productions, during the Piragua reprise, Lin's character reveals he has a wrench with him when he mentions 'Mr. Softee's truck has broken down', rather implying that he had part of it. "I told you, I run this town!" (Also, Lin's father was a piragua man, so he really wanted to play the part himself.)

  • @godabandonedthistimeline
    @godabandonedthistimeline Рік тому +47

I'm not sure if you know that but Lin Manuel Miranda and Chris Jackson were Usnavi and Benny in the original cast.
The Piragua Guy is based on Lin's grandfather but the studio wanted to cut the character from the movie for runtime. So Lin decided to play the Piragua Guy and Chris would be the Mr Softee Truck Driver to make sure it would stay in the movie. He is also wearing his grandfather's glasses and reads his favorite book in the scene where he sings.

So, In The Heights came out before Hamilton on Broadway, the film was released after.

DREAMers are illegal immigrants who entered the US as children. A lot of kids either cross the border with their parents or are sent across alone, in the hopes that they might have a better life in America. In 2001 there was a bill proposed in the US senate called the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors), which basically would allow people who illegally entered the country as minors to get official temporary residence and a path to full citizenship. People have tried to get it passed into law many times over the years with no luck, unfortunately-but the term DREAMers stuck around.

And the subplot about it is new in the movie. The DREAMers weren't a hot-button issue when the stage show came out.

In The Heights was pre-Hamilton (although the movie is more recent.) Lin originally played Usnavi and Christopher Jackson was Benny, also Abuela Claudia was played by the same actress in both.
Edit: Yes, you should absolutely watch Chicago

A tragic truth for many people on a low fixed income-they won’t be consistent with taking their medicine to try and stretch the costs of refilling. It can definitely be deadly. RIP Abuela ❤️

Usnavi's uncle is played by Marc Anthony, ex-husband and father to the twins of Jennifer Lopez, and an amazing singer in his own right

Nina loves Benny, and Benny loves her; but her dad doesn't think he's good enough for her. Usnavi and Vanessa like each other but are afraid to admit it.
Yes, it was on Broadway in 2008. Earned LMM his first Tony. He started writing it in college in 2002. Based on growing up on the upper west side.

I took my parents to see this in the theaters, was pleasantly surprised they enjoyed it so much. Abuela's passing destroys me every single time, I'm just never emotionally prepared for it. And she's no stranger to pulling that emotion, that's her same role from the stage show as well!

Would love if you continued your way through the Lin-Manuel Miranda-verse and checked out his directorial debut - Tick, Tick… BOOM!
He didn’t write it, so it has a totally different style, but it’s great! Incredible performance by Andrew Garfield as well!

I was lucky to have seen this on Broadway during its run when Lin Manuel Miranda was still playing the lead. It was amazing. You should listen to the original soundtrack. While I like the movie the live show was better . It’s always hard to capture the magic of theater in a movie. The show was considered groundbreaking at the time.
    Definitely watch Chicago.

I believe if my memory is correct the dreamers is the organization for kids who are immigrants it helps them go to college. I think its called the Dream Act or something like that.
Yup its a stage show! Lin and George Washington play Usnavi and Benny in the live show

There's extra impact for those who have walked on those streets (this was filmed in the real Washington Heights). Undoubtably infinitely more for those who actually live there, but even having been there many times gives a real connection.

I think the movie doesn't have a stance one way or the other on "finding happiness where you are" vs "dreaming big even if it takes you from your community". Usnavi found out that for him, his happiness was his community -- he's a "street lamp" -- and he had been putting a dream ahead of the things that actually made him happy. But Nina does end up deciding that she will continue to chase her big dreams, even though it's scary and hard to be away from her supportive community, because she realizes that's what she really wants to do, make big change to help the people she loves. I'm a little bummed that even though we skip ahead a few years to the future with Usnavi's family, we never find out what happened to Nina (and Benny).
But I LOVE this movie! All the big energetic and beautiful musical numbers really get me in my happy place, the same way that Hairspray does, so even though it makes me cry at the Abuela parts, it also . And I adore the stylistic eccentricity that Jon Chu brought to it -- he also did Crazy Rich Asians, which I absolutely recommend and will click on just as instantly as I clicked on this reaction!

A lot of context was lost due to a good chunk of the songs being cut from the original musical, as well as the order of the plot being switched around. The character motives don’t make as much sense in this, I would suggest listening to the original broadway soundtrack from 2008 if you’re interested.

Really bro, Vanessa really just felt guilty for not doing anything with Usnavi sooner, literally says, "i wish i was mad, im just to late", and you still think shes mad and crazy. But apart from that, i really appreciate you watching this and trying to understand and enjoy something that culturally is distant from your own experience.
