      Sprays engine with degreaser and cleans with brushes & steam. Spends nearly entire video telling us how complex the process is. Not hating, it just came off like he was worried 100,000 people are gonna see this video and come gunning for his job.

    after having spent a year working on a 95 bmw v8, i can see so many similarities in parts, links, hoses, etc. not that i own an F1 engine, but i love how a 20+ million $ art piece can seem so familiar

      That engine from BMW probably cost McLaren less than $100k in 1995. There's no way in hell that it has actually appreciated in price. The price of technology ALWAYS goes down, so $100k for a state of the art V12 engine in 2022 is going to get you WAY MORE bang for the buck. You're going to get WAY MORE power, reliability and performance from a modern V12 engine. Thems the facts, folks.

    When you spoke about the milspec connectors probably being fine, but still not risk it, or how you explain about the inconel or gold fragility, it was verified for me that you truly have respect for the customer's car and know your way around technically.

      I used to work in the defense industry. If these are MIL-SPEC connectors, you can subject them to 3 atmospheres of pressure under water and they'll work fine.

    Shout out to Mike schien for letting us get such an in depth look at his f1. This is seriously what I’ve been dreaming of my entire life…..since I first saw this car in the Guinness book of world records like 20+ years ago as a child I’ve tried to consume as much content with this car as possible…thank you everyone whose making this possible

    As a European shop owner, it drives me a little crazy that they are pulling the motor to clean it, but not refreshing any gaskets, water pump, ignition system, etc. It's the perfect time to give a nice refresh.

      That's the point of an engine out I'm positive it was done, or checked or scheduled, the F1 shop is a top secret facility with one man access, and that sacred Compaq💻

      I can confirm that the powertrain was not removed solely for cleaning and that a decent amount of "engine out" work was performed.

      if you watch leno he explains that every five years the engine has to be removed to change the fuel bladder , for these to command the price they do the owner has to follow a strict maintenance regime dictated by the factory with one of there reps present , and when leno says its expensive then you know its astronomical

      This is probably going to be the first stop for that rear power train unit. Could be going off for service work after being cleaned.

    For everyone that's commenting on how much this detail of work would cost, just factor in that this is the central engine of a $25M+ vehicle that's at least in the top 5 greatest designed/built cars of all time.

      and that engine though. In 1992 being a NA engine, it could push the McLaren F1 to 241 MPH top speed. BMW made one hell of an engine. There is no sequence after S70 in the BMW engines list.

    I’ve only seen on McLaren F-1 in person. It was at a BMW dealer in Boston in 1996. Gorgeous car. I can’t believe what they are going for today.

    my son is a mechanic and also a high end detailer , like Tesla Porche Audi etc. something like this would be his dream, what would a job like this cost courious.

    Knowing how the F1 sounds through that coffin of a muffler is insane. Plus the amount of power it made through all those bends and piping is impressive. I don't think I've ever seen manifold flanges with 4 bolts for each port, very robust.

      It was suppose to be a crash structure for the rear of the car, that’s why it’s bolted like that :D

      @@charleshu5752 Imagine how much it weighs and how much it kills the tone. Even in Inconel it has to be heavy as hell. Ditch that and have4 Ti or Inconel pipes with a 90° bend and 4 tips would sound amazing, increase power and throttle response, and drop weight especially that far behind the rear axle. I just can't help but look at OE equipment and wonder how much there is to be gained or improved if NVH and other factors aren't an issue for the end user. The headers or manifolds look incredible so I doubt there's any benefits there or with the airbox. McLaren and BMW really did an amazing job with this chassis, engine, and development of making them all work together.

      Bends and dents don't do anything to HP. Engine masters did a series on it and the difference was less than the normal variation you'd expect on runs. The dented them basically completely closed before it made more than a handful of ho change

      @@pjbth I saw that episode but to deduce that "bends and dents" don't have an impact is foolish. Besides I wasn't talking about the bends and dents I was talking about the chambers, baffles, and weight of that muffler. If you saw that episode I am sure you also saw the episode where they tested different types of mufflers and how big of an impact they had on the power the motor was able to produce.

      @@pjbth You obviously know nothing about fluid mechanics. Every bend reduced the flow through a pipe. It's really simple to calculate, actually. Of course, to truly take advantage of a straight pipe you would want to RETUNE THE ENGINE, which is probably not what most people do, and I am certain was not accounted for in the Engine Masters video.
      If you took those huge mufflers out, and just straight piped this car out the back, not only would it sound FUCKING WICKED, it would absolutely allow you to make more power (especially if you tuned it for the increased flow). It's very simple physics. Nothing complicated here.

    This was so therapeutic.
    The gentleman really likes to give the job its due time and doesn’t like to rush. He definitely loves doing it.
    F1 is the only car that gets my attention, it just has that perfect balance of absolute rawness, pure driver control and is just elegant, no over the top looks of super cars these days. Worth it!
    I know it I will never probably own one but maybe get to drive one one day.

      Yeah, maybe in 1995. But, even then you would have to put the the disclaimer (BEST ROAD ENGINE EVER MADE) because I can absolutely assure you that a V12 F1 engine would have decimated this motor, even in the 1980's. In 1986, Renault introduced the pneumatic valvetrain and allowed for amazing revs. The highest redline achieved in F1 with a pneumatic valvetrain (that I know of) was 21,000RPM. The BMW V12 in the McLaren revved out to only 7,500 RPM, less than a typical Honda Civic VTEC engine of the time.

    I loved when ammo did one like this back in the day. Any idea what this cost? In reality if I had an F1 the cost is priceless to maintain such a historical piece that will only appreciate with time

      The difference is that Mr Ammo is only trying to sell you his "cleaning products". Hagerty is likely prepping this car for sale, and is using a bit of degreaser, some steam, and a few ordinary towels. No sales promotion for "super foam", 6-density brushes, and special polka-dot microfibre towels. He talks about "being aware of what you're doing"; this guy did the research to know that just wiping the heat shields would wipe off the gold plating.

    When I was younger I worked with a gentleman who did work on a lot of classic cars, mostly Jaguars and Ferraris. My two most important tools were clean rags and popsicle sticks. You'd be amazed at the intricate cleaning you can tackle if you take your time and use a little elbow grease.

    I worked for an engineering company back in the 80's / 90's and they developed the CO2 cleaning process for the oil rig industry cleaning drill heads, so that was designed to clean oil/grease.

    It cost me $20k to do an engine out repair on my McLaren 650s (Not a major repair). I can only imagine how much this detailing service would cost on an F1 😬

      Probably close to the same. Its detailing. Just cause of what engine it is doesnt mean its more to detail. You pay for the detailing expert, but not the type of engine

      Kind of ridiculous to pay much of anything for an engine detailing when you think about it. You can barely see the engine when it is installed, and if you actually drive your car (which you should) it is immediately going to start getting dirty again.
      Remember, these are functional pieces of art, a little bit of dirt does nothing to affect its operation. You have to dial back your anal retentiveness and OCD when you are dealing with a car, and only apply that mentality to your food preparation instead.
      Hopefully, you aren't licking the the engine block after every drive (but to each, his own.)

    Love the look and sound of combustion engines. Always will. No electric anything will ever impress me like a combustion power plant. I could get emotional enough to shed some tears when an engine fires up, but an EV motor will never illicit emotion with me.

    What brand of degreaser and steam machine?

    Why steam is better than dry ice: degreasers work through dissolving the grime by lowering its PH value, and heat is a catalyst for this chemical reaction. So steam works better because heat is a better catalyst.

      Spartan SD20. Also used by race teams to remove rubber marks from cars

      Foamy Engine Brite. Same they use on Roadkill.

      Spartan SD20. Used in the restaurant industry to clean range hoods. Will not stain bare aluminum.

    I feel like it would have been worth while to remove the belt, takes seconds, a monkey could do it, and it would grant much better access to the front of the block and the accessories. I imagine that if the engine is out the owners replacing it anyways, it's not like an F1 owner is going to get miserly over a $15 wear part while it's accessible when they have spent a 5 figure sum to have the engine removed and detailed.

    I literally asked myself "Why isn´t he using dry-ice" like 5 secs before he answered it. What i´m really curious about tho is: How do you find out stuff like the fact, that that gold plating can´t even be touched without damaging it before you actually touched it?

      Learned the hard way. I have cleaned and detailed over 40 F1s. I’ve been fortunate to be able to practice techniques on gold foil that was being replaced.

    "This is not something that you can just jump into and start spraying randomly" - My man acts like I'll ever have to worry about washing one of these in my life. If somebody asks me to wash their McLaren F1, I'll definitely evacuate that to a higher level of care.....
