  • The year is 1976. Steve Jobs cofounds a little company called Apple Computers and Star Wars starts filming in Tunisia. Jimmy Carter is elected the 39th American president. A big mac costs 75 cents and the average car costs around $3500. A 4-year-old me still hasn’t discovered the hobby and Tamiya release the M16 variant of the US M3 Halftrack.
There were three versions of these US halftracks and I recall them being highly sort after in my younger years. As time passed their availability became scarce often commanding crazy money online which more or less relegated the range to our memories. The US Tamiya halftracks became just a piece of the puzzle in the evolution of scale modelling and a fond memory for most of us who never got to build one.
Moving forward nearly 50 years and Tamiya have chosen to crack open some of these moulds and rerelease some of these old kits. But was this a case of Tamiya cashing in on an aging demographic and conning us with our nostalgic memories, or was this a genuine case of giving the people what they want? Would the kit be as good as we remembered, or would it be like introducing your children to the movies you thought were amazing as a kid only to find they really were pretty lame by today’s standards.
So, there was only one way to find out and that was to build the kit and let you judge for yourselves. I decided to build the kit out of the box and resist the urge to add aftermarket in the hope I could present the model as it was designed and meant to be built all those years ago.

I admire Tamiya keeping these older kits on the market as cheaper alternatives. They still build up well and respond well to a little aftermarket detailing.

For sure. It’s great people are responding and buying them. Hopefully it inspires other manufacturers to join in and price the accordingly. 💪🙏

Got mine the other day. Nobody mentions just opening the kit and just looking at all the parts...dreams of a new build...we used to call it "grokking" I'm 63 lol...but I have been building kits since I was 4 mom or dad would build in front of me, then with me, then turned me loose.
The tamiya box art is always worth some grins also...

I built that kit in the late 70s when I was in elementary school. I like the fact that they are releasing these kits again at a reasonable price. I always think about redemption builds. ie skills then compared to skills now. Greetings from Tennessee,USA

Redemption build! I love that as a concept. I’ve recently found my old Dungeons and dragons lead figures. I recall them being painted so masterfully and now I look at them they are horrible. Was planning to repaint one for my redemption of sorts.

Hello From Detroit, Ditto on “redemption build”! Both Hilarious and Very True- I was 13 when this kit came out- a kid with a News Paper Route (The Detroit News, route #54- still remember) have me ample pocket change- and in the U.S.A. Most towns and cities of all sizes had Hobby Stores we could ride a bike to- the Tamiya Kits then, were the Gold Standard (mainly still are). Tamiya was “pricy” compared to Airfix & Monogram- our tools & Glues were NOTHING like 21st century products… Testors Tube cement left a lot to be desired, heck I think we used NAIL CLIPPERS for “sprue cutters”. The Tamiya kits had a lot of “fiddly” parts for a ham handed kid. Built a few of their motorized tanks, but that was it. All Monogram, AMT (made in Michigan) and Revell. Now- we have more than a Plethora of tools, Paints, specialized sanding sticks, AIRBRUSHES (!) etc. during the pandemic, after a near 50-year absence from the hobby- I jumped back in. Four years now and still loving it. UA-cam has been a fabulous tutorial platform- THIS channel I just found- yesterday- while in the process of finishing a vintage 1976 M16 GMC- amazed that prior to having this superb channel/tutorial “pop up” on my algorithm- that I could find NO full builds of this vintage kit- a damned popular one to this day. Always a help in seeing others build/work the kit you plan to build prior to building it. Cheers to All and thank you.

I built this when it was first released (benefits of having a brother working in a model shop ). I pre-ordered it as soon as they announced it's re-release. Thank you Clayton for this wonderful trip down amnesia lane. I personally have never build this kit, but I vividly recall sitting at the kitchen table (late 70's) watching my father build this kit and thus my modelling addiction was started. It is good to see Tamiya digging into the ancient kit mould stash and re-releasing the models that got some/most or all of us into the hobby. Looking forward to part two.

I still have the one I built as a kid sitting on my shelf. It's important to note that while there were seamlines and ejector pin sink marks, nothing else made by other manufacturers compared in terms of detail and quality. Tamiya kits were simply the pinnacle and I would gobble up anything Tamiya I could get my hands on.

    • @workbenchhobbies4316
      @workbenchhobbies4316  5 місяців тому

Yeah. Agree. The seam lines and marks are just a reminder that we are dealing with a 50yo kit and that was a result of the limitations of the day. Great to hear you have your old one still! Wish I knew where all my childhood models ended up 🧐

Greetings from 'Straylia 🇦🇺. Nice treatment of a classic kit.! My favourite version of the US half-track platform is the M3 GMC which Tamiya did not produce a version of. The Dragon version of this kit is also a bit of a nightmare, due to the incredibly thin and weak parts forming the driveline and suspension. I suspect if it was easier we wouldn't be so enamoured with this past-time.

Greetings from Canada. Nice build! I think with a bit of sanding and scraping, that overscale armour could be thinned down a bit. Gluing the tracks flat across the top of the drive sprocket and idler would help the appearance also. The kit really seems to hold up well after close to 50 years.

As someone who has been building scale models for over 56 years , I have to say the details and fit models that have gotten much better. although there are some kits depicting certain weapons that you can't find easily, like a Sdkfz 7 troop carrier pulling a flack 36/ 37 flack cannon. Tamiya used to have the series, but to but discontinued both the sdkfz and the flack 36 /37 cannon line, I used to have the entire 7/1 ,7 / 2. 7/3 series along with the 20mm cannon ,being pulled by the Horch . Just as the flack crews, there were three types spread out from the kits ""a Africa. Corps Tropical, standard and eastern front, heavy winter. I sadly found out that a lot of the kits that I had gotten over the years were no longer available , SInce I had to file an insurance claim, Police report for the Arson at my house,It is true some of the kits had there silly motorized lower hulls to put a electric motor and gearbox to make it a hybrid between a scale model and a kids toy.. I would love to see some of thease discontinued kits reissued in a series together . Such Z Tamiya used to release a themed kit package .I wish they would do a series like a Horch , a hooch with the anti tankgun, and the single 20mm flack gun . Or do a Sdkfz 7/1 ,2,3 series with the three models. To me, it was much easier , faster time wise to pre paint ,and weather a whole bunch of the same sprue assembly versus each kit separately. Also, to me, sometimes a model that has so so details is a good candidate for a scratch build start point . How many models of an armored 7 series V2 launch vehicles do you know of ?????

Would I still love them now as I did then, its hard to say because I would be looking at them with modern eyes and its easy to be critical of old stuff. But its funny how retro this and retro that has also become fashionable.

Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 I too have started "redemption builds" during and after COVID and im having a ball building them! My older brother got the Tamiya 88mm flak gun kit for Christmas one year and was so so jealous of him. It was the first kit i bought during the pandemic. Hi Workbench Hobbies . . . . .Greetngs from Indiana USA!
Built this kit in the early 70's aling with the personnel carrier with a single mount .50 caliber machine gun mounted on top. I built it up and used a hot pin to put dents and bullet holes in it and other battle damage. I also used old guaze bandage to roll up a battle net on the
on the side for added realism and painted in flat olive drab. I always wanted a small airbrush and fancy paint, but it was too expensive for me and my paper route money,
so I was stuck with make-shift tools, imagination, and books.
I was a kid then when I did this along with building other model WW2 planes and tanks! No pictures though. Unfortunately, I built more models then than I got school work done in those days when I was in catholic school. I haven't done any of that since and moved
    on to other hobbies.
I always enjoyed it and learned much about history then! Thanks for the early '70's flash-back!
Cheers from a former "modelman" Dan

I remember this kit when it came out and loved it. Very nice vid. I don’t follow much, but your feed popped up and the title caught my eye. Tamiya was the king when I was kid. Now much older and a disability forced me to find something to do and I returned to modeling. The silver lining is my 2 grandsons found grandpa’s tinkering fascinating and have picked up the bug. You are obviously very talented, but the “out of the box” approach is great for the beginner. As a young "glue bomber" in the late 1970's I built a number of Tamiya's armour offerings including this very one.
Now I primarily build class 8 trucks (the big rig kits) which were another favourite modelling subject for me back then. Much of what is one the market now is the same kits from way back although in some cases there has been some clean up of the original tooling when reissued. Clean up of ejector pin marks (sometimes in really inconvenient locations such as on the diamond tread side of part instead of the not visible when assembled opposite side!), seams and parting lines are familiar tasks with these older kits, which as you mentioned are a reflection of a different era in model kits.
For me, I am happy to see kits like these available again without having to pay collector prices. Same with the Round 2 releases of those truck kits I remember which, for a time especially with the rarer ones, were priced at ridiculous collector levels that effectively discouraged actually opening up a sealed kit and building it.

Greeting from the UK. I made a huge effort to acquire this kit last year, loved it when my mate Neil built it in 1977 (I was 12),

Hi Clayton! Great job on the M16 my friend as usual. A lot of YT modellers bag the older Tamiya kits as not being worth the effort to build them, and while they may not live up to modern standards and design technology, I still think they have their place in our hobby. Yes they may be a little unrefined, and they do offer some challenges compared to their more recent kits, but I find them a joy to build, as they drag my memory back to when I was a teenager building models with my Dad. I have only returned to the hobby in the last couple of years after a break (of too many years to mention), and my first attempts building armour models was with older Tamiya kits just like this one. I actually still have some kits of this vintage in my stash, and I intend to build them soon. A great subject Clayton, and as usual, clearly showing build techniques you used. Greetings mate from Australia 🇦🇺 (of course)!

Thank you for the build review...Love this old school stuff and the prices are right. Some companies, Revell comes to mind, would take these old molds and triple the price. Tamiya has made their money on these 100x over, as have the others, so
I, like most of us, really appreciate them releasing these once again. Certainly we will see more of these Tamiya classics in the near future 🇺🇸

Greetings from El Cajon, CA, USA. I have had an original issue of this kit in the stash for longer than I care to admit. You did a great job on this one. Great to see someone do a straight out-of-the-box build. Great results. Congrats!

Hey 👋 I must admit I’ve underestimated how many people have appreciated the out of box build. I assumed people wanted to see aftermarket and upgrades. Definite ‘note to self’ moment. Thanks for joining in 🍀🙏

I haven't built a model in over 20+ years but kept on reading the modeling magazines, watching videos and have some tank models in the closet for that "one day" I may return to it. Loved this video. Coming to you from Atlanta, GA USA
