    Great job, I could only watch this with envy, I have almost finished building this and it has given me nothing but agro. A complete drama, unusual for Tamiya, first one that almost got shelved.If the Handlebars don't go on it's going in a diarama where a Tiger reverses over it. But the figures are out of this world, a pure joy, got my money's worth with them alone

    Great video with very easy to understand commentary. Very helpful when you described the glue you like, and tools and paints that you were using. That is very helpful to novices like me. If I could get my figures to look half as good as yours.... I'll keep working on it. Thanks!!!

    Awesome video!!!! Have not built this particular kit as of yet, but plan to. I have built the "ancient" Tamiya kit of this vehicle from the 1970s - think it was an OK kit for the time. Know that a few other manufacturer's have released their versions of this vehicle, but will stick with Tamiya for the simplicity.

    Welcome back. Love your vids, very inspirational.
    A question - I note you always seem to have a lot of paint in your airbrush cup, it looks more than your likely to need for the job your doing? What do you do with it when you've finished?
    Thanks 😊

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Bob, quite often I burn through the lot, it's not very often I have to empty the cup. When I'm mixing colours in pots though there is some wastage. If I have empty paint pots I'll recant them but often I'll loose the mix.

    Another excellent video James. Looking forward to seeing what the new camera can do. Interested to hear what benefits you think the VMS cement has over the tamiya extra thin.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Bruce, with the vms fast setting it seem to be quicker to dry than extra thin, but a but slower than the extra thin quick setting. Adhesion wise it cures quickly and is durable. Very similar to extra thin, just a teensy bit quicker.

    Shot in the dark here... I've built and painted the kit and painted up the figures. I'm happy with the results BUT... I didn't attach the right arm correctly on the driver. The figure's hand is about 3 mm above the handle bar grip. I figure I have 2 options. Saw off the arm as close to shoulder as possible, re-position and try to blend the seam with milliput. I've never done this so am fairly certain results would be garbage. Option 2 would be applying heat in some way.. boiling water but I'm betting this'll melt off the acrylic paint or a candle flame which I did set up to try but didn't go through with it because even if I don't manage to melt something or bubble the paint, the results would look odd and disconnected from the shoulder. Any tips out there? Magic buttons? Time machine? Thanks for any ideas or sympathy.

    Did you ever figure out the issue with the airbrush and the brown? It looks like you had to keep moving the trigger to keep the paint flowing. Something I have issues with sometimes…

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  5 місяців тому

      Thanks!
      I think its the nature of the brown pigment. I have had trouble with all of my fine nozzle needle combos and many brands of red brown ( 0.2 and smaller).
      A fun fact, some pigments cannot be ground finer because it drastically effects the opacity of the paint to a point it may be rendered useless.
      That's why some paints are just coarser (microscopically) than others.

    hey i remember you being a fan of VMS products. A store in my country will be stocking it soon. How do you find VMS varnish compared to other brands (i watched a vms produced video on their varnishes and they stated to apply it wet so it doesn't dry while still applying it to the model, also that it doesn't require thinning and it can be sprayed on thick)? Also any thoughts on VMS thinners, slow-mo retarder? Thank you for the reply when you get a moment or chance.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  2 роки тому

      Hi mate, I would be lost without my VMS stuff now, the varnishes are next level, I dont spray them really thick though just wet coats, I havent used the gloss so can't comment on that but the matt and satin are very nice indeed. I use a lot of their other products as well and I get the impression they are well thought out and tested properly before release. Definately worth trying

      And while some of the parts breakdown amd assembly is similar there are too many differences in surface detail, the two side Hull panels and construction are similar but fit together slightly differently. I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one I'm afraid. 100% new tooling.

    Painting the wheels multiple colours is pure fantasy as is multi-colour schemes on the hull. The Heer had very specific orders that the KK was to be painted in one colour only. ALL German vehicles, by order, were only allowed to have the wheels painted in one colour, on say a tank, that could be one of the 3 colours on any wheel, BUT not 3 colours on one wheel. A rotating wheel with multiple colours is the biggest attractor of the human eye possible. Likewise, other than stencils, it was specifically prohibited to paint the German cross or Swastika on a KK. This is all documented. Please stop perpetuating the modelling world fantasies.

      I appreciate your dedication to accuracy, but bro I was just following the instructions. Are you going to also go out and gatekeep every other inaccurate build on UA-cam?, if so, you might need a few hundred years.
      Sometime I want to delve into the nitty gritty with a build, down to pigments used and try my best to match them. Sometimes, I just wanna build a model.
      The real person to complain to is Mr. Tamiya, but I'm sure you won't get anything from him.

      @@lpjmodels Just because some individuals went against orders, does not mean those are correct schemes. Roughly 9,500 KKs were built during the war. 4 examples of non-compliance is less than 1/1000th, a statistical error. They were delivered from the factory in either grey (early war) or yellow (mid to late war). This has been extensively studied by vehicle owners and the leading experts in WW2 German vehicles. Most of whom are still alive and still active.
      You may want to google the "rambo kettenkrad", restored and kitted out by a Frenchman whose imagination ran away with him. Just because it looks nice, doesn't mean it is in any way accurate. It is more a mobile museum than a vehicle as it has more weaponary and kit than a squad of infantry.
      Isn't the modelling community supposed to be into the rivet counting thing and all about accuracy? Are all those kit reviews I have read that go into minute detail about the number of rivets on a vehicle or the changes in detail of a particular item in a specific month of Tiger production the exception rather than the norm in modelling?

      I understand where you are coming from, the exception to the rule not necessarily being the norm, but as the hobby is a hybrid between historical and artistic I think there is room for either approach, and a blend of the two suits me well.
      I value authenticity, and to derive that I do usually look at some reference images, for a more casual build, this one for example, I will look at a few references to see how the vehicle wears, what schemes are used, and look for any really glaring errors.
      If you model a specific vehicle for example, as a broad example one of wittmans tigers or Baders hurricanes, studying the specific vehicle for paint schemes, wear, unusual features e.t.c is useful, for a generic build just to build, like this Ketten, I simply dont invest that much into the exactly was, more the could have been.
      For other builds, I will go a little more overboard, the Italian flying boat I recently built was a minefield due to the lack of reference, even after contacting a restoration society I got contradictory evidence on colours. I made several corrections and improvements.
      But my end goal is authenticity, and by that I mean a believable miniature, not strictly a facsimile of the original. Rivet counters in the hobby are wrongly derided, I think it's healthy to have both approaches in a hobby. But I think for the majority of builders, authentic is good enough. Some take it further. I'm currently building a specific marking version of an aircraft and there are no publicly avaliable references, so it's going by plausibility at the moment !
