100% that's what is causing the problem. I'm a ford tech and this is how we do it. Set your base timing first then pins out and bring the small hole round until it lines up. Your spot on. No no problems after this

Yes, Alan Howatt is/was very knowledgeable on ford diesel engines. Not posting new vids at present as he's moved to Thailand I think or somewhere like that. Like you say my friend you can't teach experience and everyday can be a school day, it's great that guys like you and Alan share your own for us to learn by. I had to do the faulty master clutch cylinder on my focus mk 3.5 st diesel and if it wasn't for Alan I would have been charged 300 at Ford. Just one of those faults that Ford deny ever exists but you can read the horror stories online about clutch pedal drop to know there was a problem. Keep up the great work!! 👍

I too have heard of this and had long forgotten. I think its to do with the load increase on the pump as it pressurises the fuel system in pulses and then the load goes down again. When timed incorrect wirh the camshaft the harmonics shock the belt. (Could be wrong)

One unrelated "Warning" I'd have Peter, is that if any of yer viewers run a 2006/7/8 Landcruiser & they do any sort of heavy towing, it would behoove them well to have a gander in at the rear chassis crossmember that hides under the bumper. Chances are there's not much more than cobwebs holding it on - plus the last foot of the chassis both sides will also be in tatters.
Doing yet another there today - it's always those year models. Toyota hang the towbar off that crossmember & that crossmember alone - nothing else holds the towbar. There's no bracing, no fail-safes, everything hangs on that one skimpy crossmember - and it corrodes for sport. When it lets go, it twists the chassis rails, your trailer may well fcuk forth & head north - generally a bad day out. I can guess the year before the owners tell me at this stage when they say they were towing a heavy trailer and.....
Only cure is to rebuild the last foot of both chassis rails, install a new crossmember & I then run bracing from further up the chassis down to the bottom of the towbar Belt & braces. I mention this 'cos there's an awful lot of lads out there using 'cruisers as workhorses for towing, oblivious to this big weakness. Other year models aren't immune either btw. A CVRT disc is no guarantee btw - these corrode from the inside-out, so they can look just fine but still be hanging by a thread. It is, frankly, a shyte design for attaching a towbar to a jeep that's going to be doing heavy work.
Most owners are oblivious, until it fails. Like you were about that pump timing. :-) :-)

@@kennedysgarage3281 Really rubbish design - but then again, the entire chassis/underside on these is a rubbish design - once Toyota swapped from open C section chassis to box section, it was goodnight to long term longevity.
The steel used is also next to unweldable, don't care what any other "Experts" say, it's rubbish steel - I weld on all & every make of 4*4, all day every day - I dread welding on Landcruisers & newer Transits - because both use absolutely garbage metal.
The reason I switched to using flux-core instead of traditional MIG is exactly this - the level of recycled steel manufacturers are using. Gas shielded MIG is very fussy about metal composition, cleanliness etc etc - it hates any oxide inclusion. Flux core is a lot less fussy (I use real good grade wire/machines). If I didn't have the ability to run flux core right at the raggy edge of what garbage is possible to weld, a lot of these that come in would be irreparable.

Hi, I have a 2004 Landcruiser and had to weld in a new rear cross member and repair the chassis areas around the rear shocks, also replaced both side sills.
In your experience, what’s the best product to spray into the box chassis to help prevent it rotting from the inside out? Is spraying used engine oil into it going to be too messy, would it leak out all the time everywhere

We have a Fiesta in - running on 2 cylinders - been EVERYWHERE & no joy. Broken for over 12 months - Owner was now into the thousands on parts -absolute insanity. 1.4 psa diesel. Egr, pumps, injectors, blah blah - all new.
I did some checks, decided I condemned the ecu as being shorted on injector 3 & 4 control circuits - sent the ecu off for repair in ireland. Ecu comes back as "Not faulty" - I paid the guy the 150, said thanks, smh.. Sent it off to another crowd. Another 175 - comes back, they say it's fixed. Tested it quickly - inj 3 & 4 circuits still shorted. FFS like.. Are ye all touched??
Sent if off to the UK - 179 inc postage - ECU landed in this morning. In the meantime, the owner, not trusting me & my "It's the ECU" diagnosis, had sent the replacement injectors off to be "tested" - I'd already tested them, they were good imo - injectors come back from "Testing" - "Testers" had condemned 3 of the 4 as bad - to me, I'd stripped & examined/tested them all, they were fine. When swapped into a different position, they ran fine - the ultimate test. Owner ignored that, sent more new injectors - which I didn't bother my hoop unpackaging. I refitted the "Bad" original injectors the vehicle was born with that were in the boot. He can look for a refund on his buys - not my problem. Those babies are €479 each ffs.
Anyhoo - boring stuff aside, ecu lands back from the UK - they had actually fixed it - unlike the others. Fitted that, chucked the "Bad" injectors back in, put the entire top-end back together - van fired up first tip of the key & runs like a top. I wonder how many Ford/PSA 1.4/1.6 "Injector" failures are really ECU injector driver circuit failures that nobody cops? Loads, I bet. "Real costs" on this - €179 for an ecu flash/copy to known good plus labour to fit - barmy world costs ran to more than the vans worth & then some.
