It’s nice for you to inform me that the toothpaste that my dentists have been pushing on me my entire life is the cause of the issues I have with my teeth. I appreciate it. I’ve wondered why I’ve taken such good care of my teeth for the past 60 years and now have indentations near my gum lines. Aside from that, I have been using charcoal tooth tablets for the past 6 months and they haven’t had any direct negative impact so far. They contain Xylitol instead of fluoride, which is a major plus in my book. Ongoing usage will really be the test. Thank you for your informative video.
The issue you mentioned is not likely caused by activated charcoal. More likely there daily of using toothbrushes with bristles which aren’t soft enough, or just brushing too aggressively. There may also be other chemicals and even abrasives in the toothpaste you’ve been using, which might be responsible. That said, some degradation of dental health at age sixty may simply be the result of age, genetics, long term diet, etc.. It sounds like your teeth are actually quite healthy for your age though, and if it weren’t for the activated charcoal in your toothpaste, your teeth may have been in even worse shape by now. It’s actually ridiculous, based on this video of a doctor saying “we don’t know,” to then conclude that the activated charcoal in the toothpaste you’ve used for most of your life, must be the cause of some minor development at an advanced age. Ridiculous…
I just spent 7 dollars on a small tube of Hempseed and Activated Charcoal from one of the brands featured in this video. Now I'm questioning my motives.
same !! i bought charcoal toothpaste yesterday and now i’m not sure i’m gonna use it , i don’t want it to effect my gums negatively or something .. although mine isn’t activated so i don’t know if it has the same effect as activated charcoal
Thanks. I am a pharmacist. Activated charcoal is a powerful absorbent. And that is how it works period. I don't think it is more abrasive than any ordinary white toothpaste with non soluble ingredients. Also carbon aka charcoal is actually a good lubricant.
Really honest and thoughtful input. Your review really helped me because I was having some swelling in my gums because of charcoal toothbrush. Thank you so much Doc
This is a thoughtful, logical, reasonable assessment of using dental/tooth/teelth related charcoal products. Glad I listened. Helped me make a decision.
Word of warning! I was an idiot and used the toothpaste twice a day every day and it worked great as a whitening product but then I got cavity after cavity and we couldn’t figure out why until I had images done and found out I had scratched off 96% (approx) of my enamel with the charcoal stuff I was using I now always have sensitive teeth and cannot use ANY whitening stuff BE CAREFUL CONSULT YOU DENTIST FIRST
Back in the day people in the village couldn't afford to buy toothpaste nor it was readily available. They used the charcoal derived from cooking in mud stove to brush their teeth. The teeth were as strong as they can be with not much stains.
Great video, doc. I have also been told by professionals in the field that "staining" of the teeth is layers down, and the only way to remove it and make the teeth whiter quickly is to strip away enamel. There's just no other way (I think that's the idea behind UV is to be ableto acomplish this).
He comes off as very honest. He doesn't know and we don't know the long term effects because there are no long term studies. I think he is good at giving us things to think about that we may not have been considering.
Great video, Dr. Nemeth! I was just considering purchasing one of these activated charcoal products but you're absolutely right. No long-term research have proved anything specific on its effects, specifically long-term effects on gum tissues and tooth. So, thanks again for sharing this video. KÖSZÖNJÜK SZÉPEN! :)
Dr. Nemeth, I requested, earlier today, that you revisit the charcoal toothpaste subject now, in 2020, BEFORE I finished this video. However, after watching the complete video & learning about the study stating that ALL toothpaste is abrasive, you made a great case against all toothpastes. I have periodontal disease but, my dentist/periodontist says I'm in a holding pattern from my excellent dental hygiene. HOWEVER, I am always yearning to expand my knowledge of my dental health & therefor my whole body health. The fact that you make these videos, truly makes me feel like you care about your patients & want them to have the knowledge to EMPOWER them to better dental & overall health. I'm so impressed & grateful for your videos. SINCERE THANKS!
You dentists are something else. People have been using activated charcoal to brush teeth long before crest and Colgate existed. It's completely safe. If you are experiencing pain when using it it is because the glycerin from your normal toothpaste is putting a wax coating on your teeth preventing them from being able to remineralize & heal from the damage been done from commercial dental products. Activated charcoal is not abrasive. It's a ultra fine powder & when mixed with water it dissolves. When mixed with water on your toothbrush it becomes a paste therefore isn't abrasive. Your normal toothpaste is way more abrasive than activated charcoal.
No one knows for sure because scientists don't care about the substance; research is very, very expensive. He's telling people, as informed and unbiased as he can, that there are clear pros and cons to using this not-so-innocent-yet-apparently-effective substance.
Ive been using the hismile combo toothpaste. So far, it's worked fine with little to no side effects. It feels great, smells awesome and works really well!
Dr.Nemeth, this video was incredible and thorough and most surprisingly HONEST to the core! I hope the rest of the medical community takes note. THIS is the frontier of honest and successful marketing! Three cheers to you and your association.
Thank you for your advice, Dr. Nemeth. I agree about using it sparingly... but then, if there are other options to whiten teeth, then I'd go for that than daily usage of charcoal to whiten teeth. Thank you again, Doc.
What he says makes perfect sense. When I first read about using toothpaste to clear up foggy headlights, it made me wonder "if this headlight was my teeth, what is toothpaste doing to them?" Never gave it much thought past that, until seeing this video.
@@oscarbrieva5362 no. Most people already have sensitive teeth from fluoride toothpaste and harsh detergents in them. Activated charcoal will actually help the sensitivity if you have it. I recommend a toothpaste containing the charcoal like My magic mud brand. Dont use the Hello brand. It has glycerin in it which prevents your teeth from being able to remineralize because it coats it. Always choose a fluoride free toothpaste with activated charcoal in it. So dont use Colgate
@@oscarbrieva5362 dont use the food grade activated charcoal the one that is used for digestion. Use activated charcoal by my magic mud. It is for teeth and is very low abrasive it has been lab tested it will not make your teeth sensitive. Brush gently with a soft bristled toothbrush
A message from carbon coco a teeth whitening company: The oil and polish are not abrasive at all and they basically just bind with stains and toxins through a process called adsorption and pulls the toxins away from your mouth and teeth. Also, the charcoal powder is very fine so it doesn't harm the enamel. The tooth polish also has bentonite clay that helps reminalise your teeth. Both have no harmful chemicals as well.

Hi Dr. Nemeth, as I watch your video and I came up with this question; So in your ideas what can we use or do to whiten our teeth? Thank you very much for the response.

Activated charcoal isn't acidic, so it won't dissolve teeth. It's also relatively soft (1-2 on the Mohs scale of hardness, compared to a 5 for tooth enamel), so it won't abrade or scratch teeth during brushing. However, the grittiness of most activated charcoal can be irritating and damaging to gums.
thank you for the openness and honesty about not using toothpaste. For many years, I have mostly brushed with fresh water and a "hard" toothbrush, adding toothpaste {*recenely the same brand shown in this video} only 1-2 times weekly .... and my teeth and gums seem totally normal.
thank you so so very much for an honest video on this subject. ive used it myself and the results are very minimal. i think that youtubers and instagram models ect are probably sponsered to do these vids, that or they naturally have white teeth and its a sort of placebo effect. the risks involved are just not worth it. i really thought it would be the answer to all my teethy prayers, but sadly not. that said, i think its ok to use maybe once or a maximum of twice per week, that way you get a little brighter teeth, without the risks of damaging them too much. i wish i lived in america to come and see you guys for my teeth, as you honest advice is so refreshing to see. it means your trust worthy and reputable! but i live in england so not able to book with you any time soon. Thanks for your clip, I have used the powder type that we would dip the toothbrush in. I brushed for 3min every day for 4 days and on the 4th day, I stopped because my gums were getting sensitive to sweets and ice-water to the point it would really hurt and I would have to have a glass of warm water and rinse my mouth (and still do). After about 3 months now my teeth still look nice and white :D and I love looking at them. My teeth are whiter then I have even seen them but it came at a cost. I still can't eat any chocolate with mint and caramel in it and very-cold-water still hurts however bottled water is Okay. After I used it to test on my self first I then shared with my partner what the product has done for and to me. My partner then tried it as well only brushing once a week for 3 weeks until a satisfactory whiteness was visible and then stopped. No pain and teeth look better. I would recommend once a week or once a month, slow and steady with the Charcoal & brushing as normal other times and don't try to go too crazy with wanting white teeth. Once your teeth look better ''then you would have expected to ever look'' that's when you stop brushing with Charcoal and just keep the Charcoal product around for if you want a shade whiter again later on. It's now been 6 months from last time I used it and my teeth still look good but still hurt as well. My partner's teeth look good and no pain. Take it from me - Slow and steady wins the race :)
He’s wary, and that’s right for new ideas, but there is testing done. Charcoal House had proper checks done and theirs is less abrasive than regular stuff.
I kinda wanna get this and then after using it for a bit just brush my teeth after i drink coffee so I won’t have to keep buying it. Also I’ll use it again if i think my teeth look yellow. The yellowness has kinda built up over the years of drinking coffee. When i was a kid I didn’t take good enough care of my teeth.
What do you think about Living Earth’s Black Pearl teeth whitening powder? Many people tell me that it is amazing but this video changed my mind a little. What do you think?
Thanks for commenting! Activated Charcoal may help to whiten teeth, but at the same time it can cause irritation of the gum tissue. Depending on what's going on in your mouth, it may be best to see a dentist. 👍🏻
I used a charcoal toothpaste and here are my results: I did NOT necessarily noticed any whiter teeth however, I DID notice that my teeth were really really clean. Any stains that I had from smoking and coffee were completely gone and that alone is a positive thing, teeth definitely look cleaner!
I'm glad that those were your results but just know that the charcoal can be abrasive. Maybe use it once a week to keep the stains away but not so much that it causes damage. Just a suggestion!
After 1 use I could see a difference but 30 min later I had this sensibility in the teeth which is lasting more than 24 hours. I do not advise for people like me which have high sensitivity. The doctor is right
Thank you for this I was about to use it . Can you give any recommendations on ways I can whiten my teeth without causing any long term damage ? Thanks
i brushed w charcoal toothpaste last night & now i have a big ol' swollen spot in my gums. maybe i let the charcoal sit too long or didnt rinse properly after, but it might even be an abscess. yeah my teeth look kinda nice, but i dont think ill use this stuff more than like...once.
Keila Rivera it depends what shade your teeth are! If they’re just yellow, you can use whitening strips. If you have severe internal staining like tetracycline you may need some stronger bleach solution found only in dentist offices.. I’m actually putting up a video this Tuesday on whitening, you can check it out!
The home whitening kits listed in this video may help you whiten your teeth. It's not that expensive either! ua-cam.com/video/T5Ajff80GoE/v-deo.html I hope this helps!
What about flouride in a toothpaste? Is it neccessary? I've heard that it really helps preventing cavities and other problems, however, as you mentioned, only brushing teeth is enough to remove plaque and other bacteria. So, what would you say?
It isn’t abrasive as I have used it for years with no sensitivity and my dentist says my enamel is great. And my gums are healthy as the charcoal absorbs the bad bacteria.
Thanks you for the information and insights. I'm wondering about the Burst electric toothbrush, which is all over UA-cam these days. It has charcoal-infused bristles but they're said to be extremely soft. Could the softness mitigate or undo the abrasive qualities of the activated charcoal?
I've used the Burst toothbrush and I feel it's a great brush! I prefer the 30-second smile toothbrush myself. Also the charcoal-infused bristles are not as abrasive as activated charcoal powder.

Thank you for your informative video.
are you alive? Just checking on old people
The issue you mentioned is not likely caused by activated charcoal.
Ridiculous…
This is intellectually honest. I appreciate your candor Doc
Sounds like dentists don't really know; still speculating about charcoal.

Thanks. I am a pharmacist. Activated charcoal is a powerful absorbent. And that is how it works period. I don't think it is more abrasive than any ordinary white toothpaste with non soluble ingredients. Also carbon aka charcoal is actually a good lubricant.
It’s 10000% more abrasive
I only use charcoal toothpaste about twice a week to prevent any significant harm to my teeth and it’s still been helping
Have you seen your teeth get whiter
Really honest and thoughtful input. Your review really helped me because I was having some swelling in my gums because of charcoal toothbrush. Thank you so much Doc

This is a thoughtful, logical, reasonable assessment of using dental/tooth/teelth related charcoal products. Glad I listened. Helped me make a decision.
Word of warning! I was an idiot and used the toothpaste twice a day every day and it worked great as a whitening product but then I got cavity after cavity and we couldn’t figure out why until I had images done and found out I had scratched off 96% (approx) of my enamel with the charcoal stuff I was using
I now always have sensitive teeth and cannot use ANY whitening stuff

Back in the day people in the village couldn't afford to buy toothpaste nor it was readily available. They used the charcoal derived from cooking in mud stove to brush their teeth. The teeth were as strong as they can be with not much stains.

Great video, doc. I have also been told by professionals in the field that "staining" of the teeth is layers down, and the only way to remove it and make the teeth whiter quickly is to strip away enamel. There's just no other way (I think that's the idea behind UV is to be ableto acomplish this).
The UV light definitely penetrates deeper than the over the counter teeth whitening kits.
I just bought a brand new charcoal toothpaste last night out of curiosity. Thank you for making this video.
I don't see anything wrong with charcoal because our granny's used it especially that there was no toothpaste during those days. Thanks from SA

Of course not. Western medicine is funded by biased pharma companies
This video should be called “I don’t know, but I did make a video.”

Thank you for your advice, Dr. Nemeth. I agree about using it sparingly... but then, if there are other options to whiten teeth, then I'd go for that than daily usage of charcoal to whiten teeth. Thank you again, Doc.
What he says makes perfect sense.
When I first read about using toothpaste to clear up foggy headlights, it made me wonder "if this headlight was my teeth, what is toothpaste doing to them?"
Never gave it much thought past that, until seeing this video.
Who's watching this while brushing their teeth with activated charcoal? 😂
Does it cause sensitive
Why were you watching this and brushing your teeth?

Being careful. Like using it once per week ?

I am so skeptical of using the internet to research these products because I can’t tell if the commenters and reviewers are real or fake
I always read about this happening with charcoal. Definitely going to stick to peroxide.
Appreciate the feedback and words of caution. It's great that you advise moderation and being careful versus a complete negation of the the practice.
Thanks so much John! I appreciate it.
thank you for the openness and honesty about not using toothpaste.

(but definately would based on this honest video aloe, if i were near by).

Dr. Nemeth, Would you please revisit this subject now, in 2020? Grateful for vids!
I use powdered activated charcoal then around 2 mins after I brush my teeth but I only use the charcoal once a week and it works pretty good for me
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
@@josephrnemeth btw when I meant once a week I use it twice that day in the morning and night

That sounds like a good plan! I do think it whitens your teeth. Just make sure that you only use it every once in a while, like you said.
What do you think about Living Earth’s Black Pearl teeth whitening powder? Many people tell me that it is amazing but this video changed my mind a little. What do you think?
Thank you, Doc. That was a good explanation. I was going to try some charcoal products but now I think it's better to see a dentist.
Thanks for commenting! Activated Charcoal may help to whiten teeth, but at the same time it can cause irritation of the gum tissue. Depending on what's going on in your mouth, it may be best to see a dentist.
👍🏻
Yellow is better than white. Thank you doc.
I used a charcoal toothpaste and here are my results:
I did NOT necessarily noticed any whiter teeth however, I DID notice that my teeth were really really clean.
Thanks
there really arent any, because teeth arent supposed to be naturally white.

Doctor what is the best way to whitening the teeths. What do you recommend?
Keila Rivera it depends what shade your teeth are! If they’re just yellow, you can use whitening strips. If you have severe internal staining like tetracycline you may need some stronger bleach solution found only in dentist offices..
