      A quarter to 4 basically translates to 3:45 ( three forty five )It’s basically the top of the hour minus the minutes ,except we don’t say pass or to

      For the time in America, instead of saying a quarter to, they say a quarter of or “15 of” “10 of” for ten to. I always find it to be so confusing I have to clarify exactly what they mean even after living here for over 20 years.

      @Joel & Lia: What is boring is Lia frequently finding a way to be snippy, and then Joel being the dutiful puppy dog and going right along. I have watched your videos before, and for the most part they are somewhat entertaining. In reality, you could be two entirely different people doing the same videos and it wouldn't really matter. The problem is when Lia feels a need to go all 'I've got a stick up my arrogant British a$$', so I'm going to make comparisons, or wonder why something is so popular over here. We all have different tastes here. Just because a group of people said that you should try something doesn't mean that EVERY American likes it!!! You obviously think that you are being subtle, but after seeing it time, after time it becomes glaring! For the record, I have been to London a few times, and the British snobbery is real! I have had some great times there, but there are always the Lia's of the world showing up. And the UK ain't all wine and roses! MANY, MANY Americans use the terms "Half past, a quarter after, three quarters before or after, etc. Just because you run into 100 or so people in ONE state that don't use the term means nothing. Every region is different, and even within one state people don't all use the same vernacular. Contrary to popular belief, the British way isn't always the best way. Newsflash: Your historical little brother has passed you by in so many ways, it just might be time for you to understand that we do things the way that we want to over here, just like the Brits do where you come from! We don't care what you think at the end of the day. One of the worst things that a person can do is go to a different country and feel like they always need to make comparisons, IN THEIR FAVOR! We don't need for you to like everything about America. I don't even like everything about America, but overall it's a great country, otherwise you both wouldn't be trapsing all over the place over here. Have a little more respect. Again, you are mostly just fine, but this ain't the UK, and we don't want to be.....

    We do say “quarter to 7” and “quarter after 7” in the U.S. Alternatively, we’d say “6:45” or “7:15” (pronouncing the numbers, as from a digital clock: “seven-fifteen.”) No one would say “15 after 7.”
    Very rarely, someone old/very formal will say “half past 7,” but “7:30” (“seven-thirty”) is far more common. The British form we never, ever use is “half seven.”
    Based on your reactions to Pottery Barn, I have a feeling you’d enjoy Restoration Hardware - especially Joel, as you’re redoing your/Lucy’s house.

      Yes, I agree. The "quarter to" and "quarter after" phrases are still quite commonly used in the States. "Half past" is used less frequently. And many here also say "20 after" or "20 to."
      I would guess the usage of these phrases all depends on the region and age group. I would suspect that younger generations in the U.S. use these phrases less often.

    Fyi, in the US, if you want still water at a simple carbonated drinks dispenser, usually one of the dispensers (typically one near the center, often lemonade or a citrus drink) will have a small white tab that may have "water" embossed upon it (usually unreadable). Pushing that tiny lever down dispenses still water from that spigot, instead of the labeled drink.

    Re Lia's tea preference: In USA I drink both hot tea and iced tea. Whenever I order tea I ALWAYS specify hot tea or iced tea. If Lia did that there would never be any confusion or misunderstanding. If you order iced tea ask if it's unsweet iced tea. Many places where I live have both sweet and unsweet iced tea. Some restaurants only have unsweet iced tea and those who want it sweet add the sugar themselves. You only have to ask for unsweet if that's what you want. I prefer sweet iced tea but presweetened iced tea is generally too sweet for me, so I always ask for "half-sweet tea", or "half-sweet and half-unsweet tea". It's very simple. It also depends on what part of the USA you're in but just be specific, or ask questions, and you'll get exactly what you want every time.

    • @RobertWilke
      @RobertWilke 2 роки тому +1

      This is soo true. I get that Lia doesn't understand it. While tea is popular, Coffee is King though. In general when asking for Tea usually you would have to say hot or iced. Unlike in the UK where hot tea is a staple that is just tea there and would have to specify if they wanted iced. Strange though in the morning if you asked for tea here why they'd assume you wanted iced. It may have been a Southern thing. In the North East in the morning be it Coffee or Tea they are both served hot.

    Americans say things like "wow, My mom's from Germany" because to Americans we group all of Europe as being from the same geographical area. Though, i totally get your point. I've been guilty of doing the same thing. I think people do that because they are trying to say essentially, "I see your from europe. And now you're in a foreign country. Let me show you that i'm familiar with Europe to try and make you feel less alone, threatened, homesick, whatever." It often falls flat. But i think fundamentally it an effort to find common ground.

One of the most interesting cities that I have ever visited in the United States was New Orleans. It is like no other city in the US or in the world for that matter. Its architecture is very unique and it has this voodoo/occult type of subculture where you have tarot card readers in the streets, and it has a very known blues and jazz music culture and not to forget the equally unique cuisine that they have. So I really really hope that you visit New Orleans one day. It would be even better if you can go there during Mardi Gras. You can make ten videos out of that city, I swear

    Wow, very nostalgic feeling. Malls are dying out around America and it makes me a bit sad, I grew up hanging out at the arcade and the record shop, eventually working at the cinema and trading movie tickets and popcorn for pizza, ice cream, and even photo developing. You two seem like a ton of fun to hang out with, can't wait until May & Scotland.

    As for telling time, when looking at an analog clock for example you'd say a quarter past three or a quarter after three. On a digital clock you'd express it as three fifteen. More examples, a quarter to nine(analog) would be eight forty-five (digital). Half past six and six thirty. As a high school teacher I found young people, even some of the younger teachers, were not comfortable with analog clocks. They seemed to prefer digital ones.

      Lia left out the confusing part. Brits will simply say "half five". For quarter-hours, Americans would say "quarter to", "quarter til", "quarter of", "quarter past", or "quarter after". On the other hand, for half-hours it's only "half past". But when Brits say "half five", Americans aren't sure whether they mean half before or half after.
