      It's a nightmare to deal with. It can take over a lawn before you know it. I sorted the bottom tier lawn in my garden yesterday. Spent about half an hour just pulling out poa!

      Poa just ruins the aesthetic! Sometimes it's worth just starting again if it gets too bad. Good luck with your renovation when you do it!

    Your lawns are looking really good mate!
    Weirdly enough, i did this exact same process myself this week. My lawn all of a sudden started going yellow, I put the same fertiliser on as you have yesterday, but stupidly i got impatient and give it a cut this morning so I’m hoping i didn’t hoover up most of the fertiliser🤣🙈 ( it was watered in well last night and we had a good amount of rain for a change this morning ). I think I’m the next few weeks I’m gonna give it a light scarife to expose a little more of the soil. Keep up the great work, oh and I’m really liking the hayter too as it gives a superior cut. Fingers crossed I’ll have a beautiful lawn next year and I’ll treat myself to a nice cylinder mower? That way i can buy various cartridges for verticutting, scarifying etc

      It's trying to find the right balance at the moment which is quite difficult with the weather we're having. We're expecting quite a bit of rain here within the next hour so I'm trying to get a few over seeding jobs sorted before it does!
      Same here with regard to the cylinder mower. So much more convenient having the cartridges for the one machine. Only problem is they set you back a fair whack!

    I renovated my lawn in May , but have a lot of POA , which has started to die with the heat . I verticut the lawn today and managed to get a whole green bin full of dead and weed grass out

  • @lukeheatley4148

    I had huge problem on my 200m² lawn but didnt want to start again from scratch. Whole sections seemed to be just weed grass. So on Friday I verticut, cut, verticut, cut, scarified, cut, scarified cut. Last cut was 15mm with a cylinder. The weed grass hates it so short and goes brown after a few a days which makes it very easy to see and rip out.The new grass I have been putting down is happy down to about 1cm - so should eventually win.

    I'm killing my back lawn off lol. The best thing to fight it seems to be fescues as they are so dense. My front lawn has far more fescues with not so much rye and doesnt have issues. I think thats a lot to do with how thined out rye goes during the winter time.

    • @NoviceGardener

    Did exactly the same thing yesterday. Even down to changing from number 4 to 3 on the Hayter. The only difference is that I used the verticuter attachment instead to hopefully do the same thing. My theory is that it will cut and weaken the flat grasses and make way for the grass we want.

      As long as you keep it quite high, it won't look too bad. Alternatively, you could gently go over with a spring tine rake. It will just draw them to the surface.

      It's so much better! We have a plan for that area. I found out recently when I tried digging below that the stones from the french drain below it stretch wider than we originally thought (this was put in by the developers!).
      We're going to raise the area by creating a raised sleeper bed. Hopefully then the plants will be able to get a decent footing in a proper layer of soil!

    If you’re lawn is covered in POA do you think it’s wise to try and pull them out with a weed puller and try and reseed the area? My lawn was great last year but over the winter it’s now 50% weed grass 🙄

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Рік тому +1

      It's definitely worth removing the plant. It has shallow roots so a lot of the time you can pull them out by hand. Saves taking too much soil out.

    Doesn't the poa grow back if you don't dig out the roots? Or is the idea to increase healthy grass to out-compete it?

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  Рік тому

      It will come back, but taking off the seed heads will just reduce how much will come back next year. But like you said, I'm hoping the grass I want just crowds out the weed grass! I'm considering lowering my height of cut so that it is easier to identify and keep on top of!

      I've started to grow grass in small little 15cm pots with lids. Then when a find a bigger enough weed grass, I just cut around the pot and dig it out. I then just pop in the new grass I have grown. Then fill pot with soil and grow some more. This is what I have become. Save yourself and get out while you can. 😃

      My lawn is covered in the stuff! I've got a dog that uses the lawn (for obvious reasons), so I cant kill it off.
      The only option I have is every few weeks i'm using the scarifier (metal blades, not the tines (as they are closer to a verticutter)) in 2 x passes up & across to lift up the stems & then cut them back. This time I intend to cut lower & run over with the scarifier 3 x times. Then as you say spend some time each night with a fork digging them out. I feel like i'm fighting a losing battle each year though.
      I also have a shady part which seem's to prefer the creeping fescue cultivar & the other end the rye cultivar. So when it grows you can clearly see the different blades & shades.
      I'd love to kill it and re-start, but it's just not going to happen for a while.
