      Mainly weeding in the garden and poly tunnel area! Got the whole week of work this week and started painting the outside of house to remove the pink or rose white colour! Hard work!
      Enjoy whatever you do but get that all important vitamin G!

    I live in Cape Town, South Africa and a couple of years ago we almost ran out of water here. I started my veggie garden in August 2021. Because of really tough kikuya grass I had to dig it out. I used cement slabs and large cement bricks to form a barrier from the grass. I am a pensioner thus have no spare cash and no compost. I covered the soil with cardboard and cut holes in the cardboard and inserted "grow tubes" (tubes cut from soda bottles) in the holes. I planted my veggies inside the grow tubes and only watered inside the tubes using a 5liter water bottle with a hole drilled in the top. My water bill has not increased by much and I have had a good harvest.

    Niall, another great and informative video! You can see, that you truly think about what you’re going to convey. And, how you’re going to convey it in an interesting and fun way. 👍🏽 Keep up the good work and we look forward to the next video! Those control valves are game changers!

    My goal this year is to have my son in law help me put in a drip irrigation system. I once enjoyed hand watering but my garden has grown so much and im getting older, its become more than a chore. Great topic.
    Also, overhead watering here can promote mildew which is devastating.
    Thanks for the vid, and have a lovely week.

      Oh also, check out Fraser Valley Rose Farm utuber. He has a recent vid on watering container plants. Love his channel. He's got a really great gift of teaching and explains things really well.

      I gotta say that the convenience factor of an irrigation system is just fantastic - you won't regret it! I'll deffo check out that UA-cam channel you recommend!

    In Delaware, I have been planting, planting, and planting. Sweet potatoes this week. Last week gathered the radishes to pickle them. Waiting for turnips to get a tad bigger.

    Just installed a system with these sprinklers for raised veg beds but they just dribble - have you got a higher water pressure & flow rate that mean they work better for you?

      That's going to be next year's project for me I think... water capture! There are handy water pumps that could hook a water butt up to my irrigation system which I'm very tempted by! Thanks for watching and the lovely comment Hazel - hope you have a great week! PS: It's raining here too!

    💦 Ooo, this is very much on my radar/ToDo list. I see the pipes run around the outside of your beds on the lawn. Will you bury them so you can still mow the lawn or are you just careful in those bits of the paths?

    • @niallgardens

      At the min, they're pinned down at ground level because I plan on covering the ground with wood chip over the next year. I would say that currently, I'm using my strimmer (which isn't high powered) and working along them with care

    Hi Niall, according to the info that I received with my new system, purchased yesterday, I can run 20 drippers per system. I have a 40m long garden, with a greenhouse and raised veggie beds at the end. My calculations suggest I will need 4 systems at the rear of the house and 2 more at the front, is there any way I can avoid having to use 6 timers?

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 роки тому

      Hi Michael - my first suggestion would be to look at your water pressure as (in my personal experience) it may be possible to extend the system with more drippers and accept a lower flow rate out of them. That could potentially reduce the total number of systems. My other suggestion would be zone the areas with flow control valves. It would mean you’d need to turn on and off zones manually though which may not be what you’re looking for. Your project seems bigger than mine (my polytunnel runs off a separate system and it’s own timer) but perhaps Hozelock could offer you some support if you contact them? Hope this helps.

    hi I have the hoselock system in my greenhouse but I'm still using the hose as I can't get the drips right on the furthest lot so about half isn't working right any suggestions would be very helpful as I'm disabled and find watering very painful ,I also have soaker hoses for my fruit and veg beds thanks love the vlog best wishes Tina

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 роки тому

      Hi Tina! That's a shame you're having difficulties - in what sense are the further ones not working? Is that no water is coming out of them, or is the flow lower?

    • @christinamills1897

      @@niallgardens hi it has no water on the end section at all ,would it be best to split the run into 2 with there own water supply, do you think that would be better as I have a 4 tap watering system thanks tina

  • @lisaskilton3746
    @lisaskilton3746 2 роки тому

    good video however I have no tap near either my poly tunnel or my fruit tree growing areas as stretched out so much. we have not sorted water butt areas out because they are square downpipes which are difficult to connect to. thankfully our entire garden doesn’t need watering as quite mature so just the key plants I have planted and veggies! been looking at the quick water drip systems that you can use with empty water bottles and drip systems to see if those would work at least in the poly tunnel!

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Lisa! That's such a plus having mature planting that will have lower water requirements. For my garden, the tap is at the garage and a good 30m away from the veg garden. So I've run a hosepipe down the veg garden and then have a kind of multi-connector that I have the hose and the irrigation system hooked into.

    We have such hard water. It’s prevented me from investing in a drip system. Has anyone with hard water used a drip system and how well did it work for you?

      Thanks Donald! So... I'm not 100% sure whether they are or not. If not generally stocked, it may still be possible to pick parts up off the internet. However, I'm not sure whether the same gauge pipe is used in the U.S.?

    It sound all ok,but i have main water all round my property garden area of at least thousand mtrs unless i am up and watering before sunrise the water retained in pipe work gets to hot to hold your hand under,far to hot for plants and i have to run to cold before use i assume this would be the same with your set up.

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Nigel! Thanks for the comment. From my experience, watering at sunrise and sunset helps to avoid a lot of these issues because the piping has either been cool all night, or has had the opportunity to cool down from the hot day-time temperatures. Saying that, I'm in Ireland so we don't really get temperature extremes!

    Hozelock confusion. ... produce numerous different garden timers nearly every year and don't put instructions in the box.!
