2:50: Yes, there are ways to use cat and dog poo in your compost: I use compost as a cat litter to start with, sometimes home made compost, sometimes store bought bagged compost, doesnt matter. We use a "vessla" plastic container from ikea as a litter box. I put a layer of compost on the bottom, then keep layering as the cat uses it, so there's always a clean layer on top. No smells, nothing, works perfectly fine. When it is about half way full, then I just toss the content to a dedicated compost pile. We live rural and have a huge garden, about an acre, so we always have a few different compost piles around and one of them is dedicated to cat litter as well as all the regular composting stuff from the garden. But so I know that THAT specific compost pile has a lot of cat stuff in it so I only use that compost on flower beds, under the hedge and around non-fruiting trees. It works perfectly well, so yes you can put cat litter into your compost, just make sure you don't use it on food stuff. (Obviously if you have space in your garden for 2 separate compost piles).

Use a garlic spray on your plants for slugs and snails. Crush 5 cloves of garlic with a liter of water in a blender. Strain into spray bottle. Put on new leaves as they emerge like hostas.

And yet another wonderful Q&A, and not just because you answered my question, ha. I've always enjoyed your channel and your honesty about your garden. It's not always going to be perfect, but it is going to be lovely for the effort and care put into it. Put a reminder on your calendar to plant new daffodil bulbs ( I use my phone calendar). Daffodils are one of my favorite occurrences in the garden every year! Best wishes to a gorgeous springtime for you. I'll be in Ireland in May- woohoo!

Hi Niall, for some reason I didn’t think you had a greenhouse! it was very windy here yesterday (Saturday) and hail showers throughout so was challenging weeding so when it hailed I dived into the poly tunnel and planted up little gem lettuces!
my asparagus will be 3 years old this year but might not pick until next year as I moved them last year from poly tunnel to outside!
its a great idea to probably sit and look in and around the garden to enjoy what have created and achieved!
    thanks Niall

Congratulations on your recent TV slot with Alan Titchmarsh's Gardening Club. Like my peony, you have just broken through and I’m sure you will go on to inspire and give us great pleasure in the future. I’m just up the road in Co. Armagh and my daffodils not good this year either, wonder if it could be the weather! Thank you for all the advice and I have just started my cherry guild, so here’s hoping.

That was a great video Niall, I really enjoyed it. I’d love to see more regular Q&A videos- you have so much knowledge to share! 😊 I liked the mix of Q’s and the chatty style. Also, I love your hoodie! 😆 Gorgeous colours. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Don’t work yourself too hard!! We’re off to the garden center here in Wexford. We saw massive terracotta pots for a good price, so we’re going back with an empty boot 😉🚗

5:25: i bought what is called "slug collar" from Agralan, gosh it is pricey but works a miracle. I have also tried some of the cheaper ones but they are very flimsy, the wind can blow them and they break in the sun in a few months too. Agralan is the best - unfortunately coz it is the most expensive too. But it absolutely works like a charm. And sometimes I also go out into the garden when it is already dark and preferably after rain when it is wet to slug hunt with a pair of scissors. And snip snip. Not the most glamorous method but it is free, organic and 100% effective. 😂

Great video Niall. So true to just stop and enjoy our garden even for a few minutes. My daffodils have been poor and blind this year and I have just pulled them out. Haven’t got the time or energy to nurture them! So surprised to see you pop up on Alan Titchmarsh’s Gardening Club. Congratulations on appearing on national telly!

Great questions Niall! The last one made me tear up a bit 😍🙏 I am the same. Rarely sit still if I am in the garden. There is just so much to do! 😄 Yes we definitely need to also be able to just sit and breathe it all in 🌱🌻🍀❤️

So many opinions on used cat litter. Personally, I would never use it in areas in the garden, especially where food is involved or any chance of you touching it. What I have done and it's just another opinion is use it in areas a bit away from the garden to keep away mice and rodents. I would sprinkle into areas like loose stone walls, edges of the yard and so on but never where there is human contact of any kind.

I have seen special systems that can be installed in a garden, away from food crops, where pet waste can be composted in place, with some activating additives.

I think you got the question about cat litter the wrong way around. I believe they asked whether you can use wood pellet cat litter minus the poo (usually flushed down the toilet). That leaves pee and wood pellets, in theory. And it’s the «in theory» that leaves me to land on the same conclusion as you though. The pellets will have poo residue however well one tries to separate it. And I cannot get myself to think that cat poo residue is something I want near my food.
We do compost the pellets, though. But only use the compost on things that are not edible.

      @lg2352 8 місяців тому +2

That's how I understood the question too! I used wood pellets in my bunny litter trays, and found I could sift through and only remove 'spent' pellets - that is those that had broken down to mush. I think the person asking the question could possibly do the same, thus reducing the cost and the amount to be disposed of!

Hi Niall! Loved the Q and A. If you’re planning a part two- I’d like to submit a question. I have a few dwarf apple and pear trees in large pots and I don’t know how to feed them. What kind of feed and how often?

Morning Niall 👋. Same here on the south coast in the UK. Freezing, windy & wet. That hasn't deterred my bulbs, had a few daf's up in December too 😂.
Quick question, when should I prick out my seedlings? So many are popping up & I can't remember when to move them on 🙏

Just caught up Niall, great vlog, I did a bit of weeding and transplanted some snowdrops from my back rockery to the front rockery as they're still green, hope they flourish next year, I had 2 lovely camelia bought for my birthday, a lovely pink one and a beautiful white one, I've put them in the greenhouse to protect them and put fleece over them as it's been very cold past few days. I've not started any seeds yet,far too cold but hopefully will soon. Take care and see you soon thank you happy gardening,😊 xx

I compost the animal poo with the human poo (humanure) from the compost toilet. Have a separate compost and leave at least 12 months; its well documented 😊

  • @nooie99

I cant help myself now. I always seem to be looking at what youre wearing and what it matches in the garden. Lol. Sweatshirt matching frame of green house and plants on the table. How sad am I. Lol.
I listen to the answer re cats trays. I think the question was more about the litter soaked in urine. As the poo they said went down the loo.
Obviously every one should do their own research regarding this. But my cat littler less poo goes in my bins. Thats my choice. Plus my new bays are 5x6 foot each so will get hot. But you could have separate bin that is just use in flower garden not food

Any tips for rejuvenating ancient fruit trees. We have lived a this property for 8 years and last year was the first time we had pears and apples - we were so taken off guard we lost the lot to wasps and hornets (we live Mid East France so very temperate climate) Any tips gratefully accepted.
