MONTE CARLO - Manhattan variation | Whiskey Cocktail
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лис 2024
- The Monte Carlo is a variation on the Manhattan and was featured in David Embury's 1948 The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks. It is on the sweeter side but these ratios do showcase the Benedictine liqueurs sweet, honeyed spice.
If you prefer a dryer, whiskey-forward drink then the Benedictine measurement can be halved.

It is on the sweeter side but these ratios do showcase the Benedictine liqueurs sweet, honeyed spice. Enjoy! My next Patreon goal was to hit 500 Patrons and as a result, would fly to the US to collaborate with other cocktail channels... but unfortunately that's not going to happen any time soon with the way things are currently. What should be my replacement goal/reward?

You could always do it virtually. Split screen live.
Have you ever thought of doing some sort of face off? Where several ingredients are provided and you have to get creative and use a certain number of them, make a cocktail and present it to some judges. See who creates the best cocktail. Could be fun!
Ok, there's a drink that you HAVE to make. It's called the "Baltimore Zoo".
Steve you completely resemble Sal from Impractical Jokers .. I'm not kidding 👊👊🍻 Cheers bud thanks for sharing
Monte Carlo is quite an elegant drink, but your elegance make it even nicer!
Looks good. I'm impressed and amused by the strainer toss. Cheers.
The smile gets me everytime
This is one of my and my wife's favorites. We typically use 3/4 oz of the Benedictine to 2 oz rye and garnish with a couple of cocktail cherries instead of lemon. The cherries are like a second dessert! Cheers!
So.... I tried both versions and prefer this mix way better! Thank you for sharing.
Glad you agree! What rye did you use?
I love how your wife always helps but never is on the video. You two are ment for eachother, you can just tell by the way u guys treat eachother
I just tried it with the 1776 rye which at 50% abc dried out the sweetness perfectly, thanks for the video
Watching this video while I eat my breakfast. Probably not a good idea to start drinking before work ...
Amanda McDowell just Do it ☺️
It's 5 o'clock somewhere...
This motivated me to pick up a bottle of Benedictine. Also, the background music has hints of Unchained Melody, and I cannot unhear it. Thank you kindly.
The vintage strainer?? Awesojme. Great cocktail
Yeah, we call it the “vintage shell strainer”... see here: www.cocktailkit.com.au/product/vintage-copper-shell-strainer/
Unfortunately we don’t really see all the cool authentic vintage barware in Australia..
Posting this at 10:43am is dangerous in these trying times
Great video tho :D
Exactly what I was thinking! But I guess it’s evening already in Australia so there’s that
@@Pennerman Yeah I looked it up, 16-18pm so it makes sense.
You're in western Europe then.
6:23pm right now in Aus - I filmed this yesterday actually..
Western Europe here too and had a great Manhattan session last night and a brand new DOM Benedictine in my home bar. Hmmm...what to do, what to do...
You are tempting us, my dear Steve, you are tempting us... ;)
Seems nice and doable(my fave type of cocktail).
Honestly, I've never heard of a bad cocktail with Benedictine in it. Definitely having one of these tonight.
that was such a clean catch
Thank you Steve! I made it but used 15 ml of the Benedictine and used 3 dashes bitters. . It was great! Thanks for all you sharecwith us!!
Just made this drink. The flavors and aromatics are smooth. 👌 Then I made a variation of it with Welches Dragon fruit mango and a little simple syrup. Very nice.
haha @ pulling a Leondro. Love this version of the Old Fashioned, thanks for posting!
Thanx Steve both variations have there place. But it's nice to have both options when friends like sweet or non sweet drinks. I have hear that some people also add a dash of peychauds bitters.. Haven't tried yet.
Smiles on the stir now, this man knows what his money maker is 🤣 great drink steve!
Pulled a Leandro...🤣
Holy Flying Strainers Batman
🤣
Delicious! And I am glad I am not the only one forgetting things! :@)
Have a wonderful weekend Steve!
Great drink. I prefer the lower amount of benedictine or use a higher proof 100% rye whisky. Great evening siper.
finally made this. not bad. i might go with a spicier rye next time i make it. this is definitely now in my rye cocktail rotation now.
I try to wait until the end of my shift for the video because it’s a bit tempting while working from home!
Great drink. Had grab almost the same ingredients and checked out your videos and found this. Was in the mood for a little fruit so I muddled two Maraschino (luxardo) cherries and a decent wedge of orange with the angostura. The used the 2-1 ratio with Bullet rye. Hit the spot. Next one will be with overproof Rye to give a better bite. Well done as usual...... ok 29 minutes later, yes long day at the office.... This time Rittenhouse 100 proof. Bit more spice and rye forward. I like this.
Anything with whiskey is good!! Keep it up.
Benedictine Liqueur is sweet, yet complex. Usually, I like to add only a bar spoon or two of the Benedictine to the drink. This cuts the sweetness and still lets the Benedictine come thorough.
Cheers, really do like the Monte Carlo, in the sweeter version too. 🥃 Thank you.
Is that unchained melody playing in the background?..Great cocktail btw!
Looks nice that mate, will give it a go when I get some bitters,, 👍
Figuratively..am drinking this right now😋
Love whiskey based cocktails. I’ll try it with scotch.
Great cocktail! Maybe think about doing another live stream. I know the first was was hard for you but I really enjoyed it and would love to see another one 🍻🥃
Chris Henderson yesssss
All looks good
shout out to Gospel for doing REALLY good local Rye Whiskeys.
I expect the amount of the benedictine should be used as balance to the rye. Just tried this 2 to 1 ratio with Templeton 4 year and it seems a bit too benedictine heavy. Otherwise very tasty. Thank you for bringing its existence to my knowledge.
I'm no whiskey connoisseur so I'm probably using the wrong rye here but... that is what I had on hand.
Try it with a higher proof rye - should work better, or just lower the Benedictine 👌
@@StevetheBartender_ about 3/4 ounce works well
Pulled a Leandro. Classic
So it’s basically a Frisco with bitters; you hinted in your Frisco/Frisco sour video that bitters and a bit more Benedictine might improve the cocktail, and the Monte Carlo seems to do that.
Hey Steve, I've recently gotten into cocktail making because of you and Leandro, so thanks for that!
Which spirits/bottles would you recommend as a start to my bar? I currently have a 10 year scotch, bombay sapphire gin and a white rum as well as sweet vermouth and Ango bitters for mixers. What stuff should I add to have a good base?
Your base should be determined on what drinks you would be interested in making. Buy a book of recipes or google some drinks you like, then buy the ingredients for the drinks that sound good to you and work from there. I have a 40 bottle bar. I like making Tiki drinks, 13 of those 40 bottles are rums from different Caribbean countries.
This looks delish. Thank god Dan Murphys provides an essential service.
I always forget my jiggers 😁. Great video man
Такой серьёзный, складки на лбу. Улыбнись, ты молодцом
Translated to: "So serious, wrinkles on the forehead. Smile you're done"
Lol, I do have a few serious lines on my head... it comes from my old man!
what is the name of the cocktail that is made with whiskey, ouzo and coke??
How would Benedictine and Brandy [ B&B ] work in place of the Benedictine? Is there any real difference in sweetness between Benedictine and B&B?
Nice :)
With skills like that a call up for the next Ashes squad beckons
Use a big spoon; use a small plate; you just need something to hold back the ice.
I see these drinks with bitters. But does bitters last a good time or does it expire or go bad within a short amount of time?
Bitters lasts ages - generall high proof and high flavour/bittering agents..
Okay thanks. Holy smokes u responded lol.
Of course, I try and respond to everything...but it’s hard!
I only see one version in the description :(
It is in the description but I've added it a second time so it can't be missed ;)

@@StevetheBartender_ OH I was looking for a second recipe, my bad LOL
Try swapping out the rye for a nice reposed tequila and thank me later
Someone else mentioned this too.. I’ll have to try.. the Monte Carlos!
"But it's most commonly served strained over Isis"
CC 1:17
Swap the rye for tequila and you get a Monte Carlos.. which i think i prefer..
We call this drink a Kentucky Colonel in Texas.
So what Rye was that, Steve?
It's an Ozzie rye from Melbourne, the Gospel straight rye: melbournemoonshineshop.com
Which seems not to be available here in the US, unfortunately. :(
Sorry I forgot to mention it! As QD mentioned, The Gospel 👌
@@StevetheBartender_ if it can't be had in the US, I doubt I'll find it in Canada. But maybe you'll smuggle me a bottle along with your gin when you decide to visit Canada!
Coming at our boy Leandro like that!🤨🤨 #300DOLLAR30BLENDER LOL
Lol, I’m not having a dig at Leandro.
I think it is an interesting cocktail - however I do have to disagree with one thing: while it seems to swap only one ingredient, it is for sure not a Manhattan variation - because the Benedictin DOM is a completely different ingredient (liqueur) than vermouth.
This obviously changes the whole character of the cocktail as well!
While a Manhattan is a medium cocktail (spirit, vermouth/wine aperitif, bitters) the Monte Carlo is rather a sweet cocktail like a Godfather or Rusty Nail...
All just depends on your interpretation of a “variation”.
Steve the Bartender
True. But an interpretation should (in my playbook) incorporate a relatable character...
Gimlet, Gin Sour, Tom Collins and Gin Fizz are all extremely similar (when it comes to the ingredients) - but are very different when it comes to character!
So, just a little sweeter than a Manhattan? Ok
I'd just use a much higher proof rye. Rittenhouse would be an easy choice.
hi daddy ;-)
