Is 1/4 oz of orange bitters too much? No. Also, I personally know the folks at North Shore Distillery who make the Scofflaw Old Tom Gin and they're good people - support them if you're in the area! Time stamps in the description! (And let me know how you make your martinez!) 🍸
You are right, the best is to go with your favourite bitters or at least using the right proportions to taste(which would definitely be as per a person's taste).. I had tried Fee Brother's some time back and I messed it up.. Maybe I added too much.. I avoided any kind of orange bitters for next few weeks until a friend talked me into experimenting it all again...And it was all good (which means I actually messed up the proportions in my first try). Btw I used 1/4 oz too this time.. was not too much!.
Bit late on commenting here, but they are indeed great people at north shore! We’re regulars there, even had friends get married there. Have you done the tour and tasting?
The Martinez has become my favourite cocktail thanks to this video, I've made many small variations and lately I've switched the bitters for Fee bros cherry bitters, still a full 1/4 oz and then I switch the maraschino for dry curacao, try it and see what you think for yourself. I most frequently use No 3 gin, Cocchi vermouth and Pierre Ferrand.
First off: I love and relate to the chaotic and mildly confused energy on show here. Second off: I've tried a few different martinez recipes over the last year, and this is my favourite so far.
Best Martinez recipe I've found for this magic cocktail. The 1/4oz bitters is genius and pairs very well, never would've thought to try that. FYI I used Botanist gin, don't have an Old Tom (yet), this worked like a charm and tasted better than Beefeater, but not night/day better
You guys rock! We’ve watched vid a couple of times but decided to make the drink with you. And taste it with you. And agree… with you both (LOL). So more interesting than a Manhattan or a Martini. And so appreciate how you describe the flavor components of the cocktail. Love you guys. Keep it up.
I only made this now...late I know. But OMG do I love it! I really like that punch that the 1/4oz of the Fee Bros Bitters gives it. This one is sweet, yet bitter, rich and easy to drink. Thx Anders!
Scofflaw Old Tom Gin-my favorite as well! I used to live next to Scofflaw in Logan Square, the bar that launched it with North Shore, for years! They made a lovely Martinez as well.
Absolutely love this recipe. Last year, Evan Magill turned me onto your specs with that quarter ounce of orange bitters. I’ve been making them like this for my friends for months and been getting rave reviews!
Not only is your channel really interesting, it's also fun to watch! I love the humour, the spontaneity, and sometimes the little cringe! I make my Martinez with 50 vermouth del Professore, 30 Old Tom gin and 2 dashes of decanter bitters. So mine is definitely a vermouth- based cocktail. I'm wondering if you'd like to try it and what you think?
I am really enjoying this channel! I realized after watching this that I had 90% of the ingredients on hand (I used a tiny 1/8 oz /splash of Cointreau instead of about 1/8 of an ounce of the bitters, as all I have are Angostura orange bitters (which I dutifully used). I also used an Oroblanco (grapefruit) in place of the Lemon and that peel/zest worked very nicely as a garnish to accent the orange without over-powering the rest of the drink.
I've followed your channel and recommended it to friends for a good year now. Your proportions definitely add character to mixed drinks and have given me a solid understanding so I'm just now starting to improvise. The Martinez and the Black Manhattan are perhaps my favorites. Thank you!
Antica formula for the vermouth and swap lux from gran marnia, only two dashes of bitters. A squeeze of the orange oil and let stand wow Those flavours are amazing - my favourite
I used dry gin and it was plenty sweet enough, though I also used carpano antica for the vermouth, don't know how that compares to the cocchi. One could also use dry gin and add a bit of syrup if desired. I just had Regan's orange bitters and added a little shy of .25 ounces, but a good amount. It was a very good drink and unexpectedly harmonious.
Surprisingly found it hard to get Luxardo in Melbourne, Australia, but Maraska substituted. Otherwise made as described and is my new favorite cocktail. Have seen several people recommend it before, glad to finally make it properly. Thanks Anders!
So I tried this tonight. I used London dry gin (Bombay sapphire, because we've had this bottle forever, not a bug gin drinker.....maybe until now...) Dolin sweet vermouth ( what I had....going through this, might try the Cocchi next time) instead of Fee bros bitter (I have Regans) I used a half bar spoon if orange curacao and a couple dashes if the regans. And the luxardo. Very tasty!
I just made this drink. Have to say I really like it. Used London dry gin as it is what I had on hand and the 1/4 Oz of Fee Brothers Orange Bitters. Very nice! Thanks for sharing it.
Always loved this cocktail from the first time I had it. Looking forward to trying your recipe. Really enjoy your videos. Thank you for all the work. I’ll just selfishly enjoy with a cocktail. Cheers.
Had A Martinez cocktail at a Memphis restaurant last night. It was good. My wife tasted it and said it tasted like Nyquil to her. She ordered a daquri. I liked hers too.
Just tried making this and agree it is better than a regular martini. Had a couple of changes from what I had on hand. Used Gin de Fiori blood orange gin. Same ratios. For bitters cut the amount in half since only had Angostura orange on hand. Great nuanced drink overall.
WOW, the addition of so much bitters sounds crazy at first but kind of makes sence. As soon as I get Old Tom gin I will try your version. Sounds like heck of a drink. Thanks for the recipe. Cheers!
I normally like my drinks on the sweeter and more citrussy side but I just made this and it's excellent. I used a dry Gin and a different orange bitters, with a little less overall, and it still tasted very interesting and well balanced
Just made this tonight, with exactly the same bottles except for the old tom gin (I used Barr Hill's "Tom Cat"). This cocktail was unreasonably delicious. !!!! I will absolutely make it again. Like, probably tomorrow!
This is a very intriguing Martinez cocktail. Anders' version at first glance seems VERY sweet. That may not be a bad thing. Also the large amount of Fee Bros. orange bitters may balance it out. His desire to garnish with lemon peel as a foil to all that sweetness seems to make a lot of sense. I made a Martinez (2oz Salcombe Gin | 2oz Dolin Sweet Vermouth | 2 dashes Angostura Orange Bitters | 1 Bar Spoon Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur | Orange Peel Garnish | Freezer Ice| Same Glass) and ended up adding an ice cube to my final drink. I found the sweetness a little more indulgent than I would like. That's what got me on the Interwebs looking to see how others do their Martinez. If mine with dry gin and more bitter orange bitters tasted sweet, I wonder what Anders' version will taste like with the OT gin and sweeter bitters. All in all, I'm NOT knocking this version. I DO agree that a Martinez is a great cockail for Manhattan lovers and gin haters to try. One other curve ball, Maraschino Liqueur can be hard to find. Simultaneously it is very easy to think they mean the red syrup in a jar of maraschino cherries. I may try a bar spoon of the cherry jar juice of the Bada Bing cherries with a 3:2 gin to sweet vermouth ratio. Great video and definitely a version worth trying EXACTLY the way Mr. Erikson made his.
A dry dirty gin martini is my absolute fav cocktail, however the mint julep is my 2nd fav... which leaves a lot of room for close 2nd's in between! Just want to say I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for keeping it real and not taking yourself too seriously, yet taking yourself serious enough to be a real professional that learn something new with each video. Looking fwd to watching this one! 🍸
You're absolutely right about this cocktail had one for the first time about three weeks ago and it's fantastic, I will be making these at home for sure..
Thanks for introducing me to another tasty cocktail, Anders. I've made the martinez with both Old Tom gin (I bought Scofflaw) and London dry gin. I think I prefer it with London dry gin. The Old Tom is nice but it makes the cocktail a little too sweet for my taste. But it's wonderful in a gin and tonic. Thanks again.
Made this with Ford’s, formula antica, luxardo, and a normal amount of angostura orange. It blew me away. Complexity for days. Will need to try this too.
This is my favorite cocktail that I have to teach to every bartender I have ever ordered it from, I swear I'm gonna tip 100% if a bartender can ever make one of these without my help. The recipe I have memorized for teaching bartenders is: 2 oz Gin (I usually have to settle for Tanqueray) 1 oz Sweet Vermouth 1/4 oz Maraschino 3 dashes of Boker's Bitters Garnish with lemon or cherry At home I usually make them with my favorite Japanese Gin, "Roku," I really like the added dimensions that I get from its botanicals.
Just made this for the first time and I'm very pleased. Went with tanq, martini & rossi, luxardo, and orange ango (3 dashes). Way better than a Manhattan imo.
I live in Oakland near Martinez, CA. I am always looking for classic cocktails from the area to give a try. I don't like Gin, but there are some cocktails I like with [Scottish] Hendrink's Gin. So, I used Hendrick's Gin with Antica Turino Vermouth: I thought this vermouth would express the fruitiness I was looking for. Final cocktail has become a favorite of mine, for which I'm now a proselytizer! 2 oz Hendrick's Gin 1 oz Antica Vermouth di Turino 1/2 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur 3 dashes Angostura Bitters Garnish: Orange peel Wow. Thanks Anders

Pisco Punch, Irish Coffee (ofc), Mai Tai (now officially Oakland's!)....California Milk Punch (a bit complex!)
recently made a martini-esque cocktail for a friend but forgot I took the fun stopper out of my orange bitters so he got a wallop of orange bitters but it ended up perfect, glad to learn I was right
Another great video. Want to try this one. But if I tried every drink that looks good on your channel, I’d go go broke buying booze! Keep up the great work!
Another amazing episode Anders! I too love Martinez even more than Manhattan! 1/4 ounce of bitters got me thinking and I will try it out for sure! Cheers my friend!
Just made this with absolute bottom shelf bottles - Gordons Gin, Gallo Vermouth, and Lazzaroni Maraschino. Still liked it millessss better than a Manhatten I made with a top shelf bourbon, thanks Anders!
I have tried this ratio also with white sweet vermuoth or with vodka or with both of them (I know It is’nt a martinez at this point) and I find it always perfect Good job man
I LOVE A MARTINEZ! almost as much as I'm loving your channel. The pandemic introduced me to the joy of making cocktails, I'd already locked in the enjoyment of consuming them...but making AND THEN consuming them, even better! thanks for your tips, tricks and positive vibes. Great work!
I'm a Manhattan fan not a gin fan but with the other ingredients I might just like this.... gonna give it try. 3/8/22 - tried it ..WOW! Really like it... thanks Anders. BTW I used Aviation Gin which is from Portland.
Funny, I just had my first martinez 2 weeks ago, did not think I would like it but when I tried it I was surprised! It's now in my rotation, I really think it's underrated.
I will eagerly give with recipe a try this weekend! I often use more Vermouth in the Martinez, and make it a more Vermouth forward cocktail. It's a favourite and I agree, about preferring it to the Martini! This recipe sounds amazing and especially, so, with the amount of the Fee Brothers Orange Bitters! I can't wait! Great choice of cocktail to profile, Anders!
@@AndersEricksonI know I am going to love building this cocktail! I plan on making this tonight's cocktail!! Thanks so much, Anders! I hope you have a fabulous weekend!!
Nice one. Never put that much bitters in, but I don't have Fee Bros. I have Regan's, which tastes like celery to me, I need to get some different orange bitters.
Okay I watched this video today (very new subscriber here!), and made this as soon as I got home from work. I used Rabbit Hole Bespoke Gin (barrel finished - good stuff), Antica Formula Vermouth, Luxardo Maraschino, and the Fee Bros Orange bitters. I have to say, this cocktail is amazing. I truly enjoy your videos and wanted to say a big THANK YOU! And CHEERS!!! (p.s. I told my wife that you’re my new best friend…)
I make mine without the orange bitters. And you must try different gins, not all pair with sweet vermouth, but they all create a different and enjoyable Martinez.
As a fan of both classic martinis and manhattans, I think I know what I'm making tomorrow. Especially since I got a nice local sweet vermouth recently.
This is one of my favorite cocktails. I tend to gravitate towards two part vermouth and one part Old Tom depending of what vermouth I have on hand. The Cocchi is a winner! I haven't tried with the Fee brothers....yet.
Actually, after starting to experiment with other Martini recipes, that have a little absinthe, maraschino or other liqueurs, I might have to take that back. I tried the Martinez this evening and found it fine, but maybe a little too sweet. So experimenting goes on...
I just have a home-made Martinez in front of me. The only difference was that I used Hayman's Old Tom gin (which is rather tasty, no?). This is such an interesting and wonderful drink. Definitely like it more than (any) Martini. And may I say, your choice of glassware is always spot on, Anders.
This is my favourite cocktail! Oh my god I have so many questions! So I’m interested to hear you say you had nothing to say on the maraschino, but what about Maraska? Croatian cherries are the best and Luxardo even get their cherries from the Croatian region of Italy. Have you tried Maraska? I love it. The fee orange bitters looks like a game changer I must try it! Always used angostura orange bitters and only two teaspoons but I guess it maybe too bitter like you said for a whole quarter oz?! Now for the vermouth, I’ve tried Punt e mes (too bitter) and vermut lustau (too sweet) I always come back to martini rosso, it works. I have to now buy yours of course 😂 As for the gin I use a local Old Tom called bath tub gin from an independent brewery in Kent, UK. Best Martinez video ever! Please try the Maraska and get back to me! 🙌
Martinez was the first-named Capitol of the State of California in 1850. This lasted until 1854 when the pull of Gold from the Sierras moved the Capitol to Sacramento. Bitchin drink, I think I'll make one tonight.
Yes!! Love the Martinez. As I'm sure you know since I told you on the GRAM. Outrageous to put 1/2 oz of bitters in it though! That's like putting 1oz or more of Angostura in a cocktail. Going to get Fee Brothers ahora.
I've taken on your use of a full 1/4 oz of bitters and must say my Martinez is more to my liking as a result, so thank you for that. Today I thought what happens if I swap out just the gin ( either Tanqueray 10 or No 3 in my case) for some Rittenhouse rye to take this Martinez back towards it's Manhattan roots, it's soo good.
Hmm….Given I’m a martini fan and Manhattan fan…I have the fee brothers orange (gin barrel aged ) orange bitters and cocchi…methinks I need to go get an old Tom gin and some luxardo liqueur …thanks for the video …you have some great recipes
My desert island cocktail! Enjoyed your build quite a bit, but have you tried it with Boker’s Bitters? Something about the extra cardamon brings the aromatics and florals out of the old tom gin, and the funk out of the maraschino. And totally agreed on the lemon-the brightness is much appreciated. And agreed-way better than either a Martini or Manhattan!
Might be the Old Tom I found, Hayman's, but the drink was a little sweet for me. Maybe could try it with the Punt e Mes instead of the Cocchi, or perhaps dry gin (or split the Old Tom with something proofier). Flavors are excellent, mind you, just a tad sweet for me.
Absolutely love this drink, Anders, and the only bottle of your recipe I've used so far is the Luxardo, so still looking forward to trying it once I expand my collection. I do have one complaint, though. These go down WAY too easy. I'm almost tempted to try it on the rocks to make it last. Almost.😉
I read somewhere of an 1853 martini which was 2 or 3 parts gin to one part sweet vermouth, garnished with a cherry. I had a bartender whip one up for me; tasted like bourbon!
Hello, I truly enjoy watching your videos they're fun and informative. For this particular cocktail could I switch the maraschino liqueur for grand Marnier?
Is 1/4 oz of orange bitters too much? No.
Also, I personally know the folks at North Shore Distillery who make the Scofflaw Old Tom Gin and they're good people - support them if you're in the area!
Time stamps in the description! (And let me know how you make your martinez!) 🍸

Is is valid to replace the orange bitters, or angostura bitters for something else as campari or something of the sort? Thank you. Love your videos

I would also like to complement Az for the awesome camera work and lighting in you videos. It doesn’t go unnoticed 👌
Every UA-camr should have an Az in their corner! 👍
I appreciate how the clock in the background always is set at 5:00…..well played!
This might be my favorite cocktail ever. So well balanced. Wish more bars would serve it. I like to put a maraschino cherry in there as well.
the martinez is my all time favorite cocktail and this rendition is a game changer
Wow those little info-drawings are stellar! 😉Drink wasn't half bad either.
The drink was full good.
i like when you are on camera together great channel.
Possibly the most watchable chap on all of youtube. Just love your cocktails. Thanks.
Just made one of these for the first time, it’s INCREDIBLE. Who knew using that much orange bitters would be so palatable!!
This is my favorite cocktail at the moment
I made this with Tanqueray gin, Dolin vermouth, Luxardo maraschino and Angostura orange bitters. What a great cocktail!
I got Northshore Gin No. 6 a Modern Dry Gin. Love it. I didn't know they did an Old Tom. Imma gonna get it now!
Just made and had more than one but fewer than seven of these. Solid cocktail. Also, this is the best cocktail channel on UA-cam. Cheers.
I've made this two or three times now. It's by far my favorite version of a Martinez! Thanks for the recipe and video!
I really enjoy your videos and are very helpful, thanks for the recipe
You guys rock! We’ve watched vid a couple of times but decided to make the drink with you. And taste it with you. And agree… with you both (LOL). So more interesting than a Manhattan or a Martini. And so appreciate how you describe the flavor components of the cocktail. Love you guys. Keep it up.
I'd love this! You can see the citrus oil floating on top after the twist, very cool. Will try!

I love this, Dominic. Evan became a master of the Martinez! If I'm not mistaken, he didn't care for gin before this drink. What a turnaround 😂
My wife is going to love this one. She likes Manhattans and gin.
Not only is your channel really interesting, it's also fun to watch! I love the humour, the spontaneity, and sometimes the little cringe! It was lovely hearing a foreigner saying 'jenever' correctly. Great recipe and great video!
Been binging the channel all day - love your style!
Really happy to see Hayman's Old Tom get a shout out - it's really a great OT!
I am really enjoying this channel! I’ve been wanting to try this for a while. Finally got a bottle of Maraschino and tried it out. Absolute banger. Really delicious.
Mmmm! I’m a whiskey drinker, but this is indeed, a lot like a Manhattan! Delicious, thanks again!
Bravo Anders! Love the vibe of your videos!
Thank you so much, Sašo! That means a lot. Love the work you guys are doing!
I just made this drink. Have to say I really like it. Used London dry gin as it is what I had on hand and the 1/4 Oz of Fee Brothers Orange Bitters. Very nice! Thanks for sharing it.

I love a good Old Fashioned. But I just made one of these and it might be my new favorite cocktail. Delicious!

You're absolutely right about this cocktail had one for the first time about three weeks ago and it's fantastic, I will be making these at home for sure..
@andersErickson brother... you are a gem... thanks

Like the build you went with! I think that would be a great side-by-side comparison with this one. Cheers!
Another great video. Love the bits of history too!
Cheers, Tommy! Thanks!
hi anders, found your channel 2 weeks ago. great videos! i'm a hobbymixer from germany. the martinez was one of my fave drinks in the 2010s 🙂
One of my favorite recipes. At the bar I work at we used to do a barrel aged Martinez and it was delicious.
That sounds epic! Haven't had a Martinez yet, but the specs sound good and barrel aging makes everything better

Still LOVING seeing the local Fee Bros on all the Drinktuber pages
Funny, I just had my first martinez 2 weeks ago, did not think I would like it but when I tried it I was surprised! It's now in my rotation, I really think it's underrated.
I'm so glad you liked it! I think it's such a great sipper. Cheers, Lee!
I made this last night, my grandma said it reminded her of a bitter candied orange and she loved it with chocolate.
Thanks, Christine! I hope you like this build for the cocktail. There's so much going on in this drink. Cheers, and enjoy your weekend!
@@AndersEricksonI know I am going to love building this cocktail! I plan on making this tonight's cocktail!! Thanks so much, Anders! I hope you have a fabulous weekend!!
What a beautiful video. You should be very proud of your work. Instant subscription.
Thank you so much, Jacob! Cheers to you!
Nice one. Never put that much bitters in, but I don't have Fee Bros. I have Regan's, which tastes like celery to me, I need to get some different orange bitters.
Thank you, Pete! You could split the two and make Feegan's. Best of both worlds - orange & celery. lol
@@AndersErickson That is the obvious next step.
Haha cheers, Tom! So glad you found the channel and a new drink to enjoy!
Oh, I'll have to try this! I have Barr Hill Old Tom gin and Carpano Antica in my bar right now. I'll look for Scofflaw. =)
What a great video! What a great cocktail!
Cheers, Evan! This one's definitely for you!
I'll be in RI next Saturday. I'm taking a little road trip with an old buddy of mine. We might just look you up and buy you a beer!
Great job. Your just fun to watch and I learn something. Do you use Chicago ice?
This is one of my favorite cocktails. I tend to gravitate towards two part vermouth and one part Old Tom depending of what vermouth I have on hand. The Cocchi is a winner! I haven't tried with the Fee brothers....yet.
That sounds like a solid build to me! I hope you like it with the Fee Brothers. Cheers!
This is definitely better than (any) Martini out there! It's a pity that such a tasty and complex cocktail tends to be forgotten or overlooked.
Actually, after starting to experiment with other Martini recipes, that have a little absinthe, maraschino or other liqueurs, I might have to take that back. I tried the Martinez this evening and found it fine, but maybe a little too sweet. So experimenting goes on...
Interesting recipe. Looking forward to trying it out.
Great info! Good to know👍
Really OLD Lady here...I don't drink...I just enjoy watching your show!
Never to old to start! Lol
Yes!! Love the Martinez. As I'm sure you know since I told you on the GRAM. Outrageous to put 1/2 oz of bitters in it though! That's like putting 1oz or more of Angostura in a cocktail. Going to get Fee Brothers ahora.
Hahaha. It definitely makes it one to remember. In the best way possible!
Great stuff! Would still love to see you do a video on martinis!
Looks like something I need to try! Another excursion to Binnys looks like.
This sounds so good! I need to get Marischino liqueur (and dry curacao, because so many other good sounding dri n ks have that!)
Letherbee from Chicago made a barrel-aged gin this last fall that is amazing in a martinez
I was just talking to someone about this! I'll see if I can find a bottle - love their seasonal offerings.
This is a new favorite of ours. I need to pick up some old tom gin.
Definitely. The old tom works so well in this drink. Thanks, Carl!
Almost.😉
Interesting combo
I read somewhere of an 1853 martini which was 2 or 3 parts gin to one part sweet vermouth, garnished with a cherry. I had a bartender whip one up for me; tasted like bourbon!
Hello, I truly enjoy watching your videos they're fun and informative.
For this particular cocktail could I switch the maraschino liqueur for grand Marnier?
@AndersErickson Could you show how to make G&T with tonic syrup + seltzer instead of the tonic (quinine) water ? -GF
