For fans of unique cars, it doesn't get much better than an Exner era Chrysler. And if you're a discerning collector who's itching for a classic big-fin Mopar that'll be the star of every cruise night in town, this '57 DeSoto is your ticket!
Based on legendary designer Virgil Exner's 'Forward Look' body, DeSoto's Adventurer was introduced to supplement the brand's well-known Fireflite series and, according to many classic car enthusiasts, is some of the finest metal to ever leave an American design studio. The spectacular code L Surf White and code P Adventurer Gold example you see here was assembled at Chrysler's Detroit, Michigan manufacturing facility and currently wears a clean, high quality restoration that has been exceptionally maintained.
Recognized as the first European to cross our famed Mississippi River, Hernando de Soto was considered North America's ultimate adventurer. As such, the Adventurer series became the DeSoto line's ultimate offering. And this car's classy metal moves thanks to an exclusive Hemispherical V8 that wears a correct S26-A-2311 engine stamp and turns hearty 9.5 to 1 compression into a stout 345 horsepower. Clocking in at 345 cubic inches, this square-bore mill was introduced as a slightly massaged match for Chrysler's renowned letter cars. The copy you see here appears to wear a roster of correct pieces from its freshly decaled Mopar air cleaners and high performance Carter carburetors all the way to its heavy duty radiator and green cap Mopar battery. And little details like fresh chrome valve covers, vivid "DESOTO FIREFLITE EIGHT" call-outs, correct squeeze clamps and a pair of fully restored horns round out the car's natural eyeball appeal.
Behind the FireFlite V8, a slick-shifting A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic sends power to a correct rear end. That tough driveline spins in a fully restored undercarriage that's complete with Chrysler's robust torsion bars and stiff outrider springs. At the corners of that undercarriage, heavy duty power drum brakes ensure solid, fade free stops. At the center of the car's solid floors, a traditional true dual exhaust system employs fresh turbo mufflers that sound deep and civilized. And all this road-worthy hardware rides on old school wire wheels which spin pliable 235/75R15 Firestone FR721 whitewall tires.
Take a look inside this coupe and you'll find a spacious and airy environment that has enough room to haul the whole family in comfort! Front and rear bench seats, which still feel firm to the touch, prop an attractive combination of two-tone vinyl under plaid centerpieces. Like-new carpet, which is sprinkled front to back with awesome gold flecks, does an excellent job of highlighting rich and luxurious ambiance. Above that carpet, a Surf White dash hangs a fresh gray pad, fully rebuilt gauges, triple-range pushbutton transmission controls and a correct AM radio over a prominent Big Daddy Don Garlits autograph. And in front of the driver, a two-tone steering wheel spins a chrome horn ring around an intricate DeSoto logo.
If you're looking for a top-notch classic that'll draw a crowd wherever it goes, your search is officially over. Call, click or visit RKMotorsCharlot... for more information on this awesome DeSoto!
Love those triple-stack tail-lights.
This was the first muscle car I ever drove, I was about 13-14, my Stepdad let me drive it, it was black, had the gold package, hemi with dual quads, dual exhaust, torqueflite and it was a convertible, it was like being in a rocketship, I have never forgotten that ride with him, it put me on a very successful career in the automotive trade, God bless him, rest in peace pops,
ITS MORE THAN A CAR ....ITS ART
My buddy next door's mother had a new butter yellow with a white top Adventurer convertible.
She looked like Elizabeth Taylor. Going for a ride on a Summer day with the top down was an experience in the "top ten" of my memory.
Bought one just like this car (only it was a convertible) for $200 in 1964. Drove it for a year and a half cleaned it up, did minor repairs, and replaced the tail pipes so they came out under the bumper to keep the exhaust tips under the tail lights from rusting.then happened to find the right guy that gave me $ 500 for it
This is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and the level of restoration,… well, it looks like jewelry. The importance of Virgil Exner to the history of American design and auto making can't be over-stated. That man was a genius. It was a pleasure just looking at this car. Thank you.
Totally agree! : )
His sheet metal rusted heavily
This is the most literate car ad I’ve ever heard. Hats off to whoever wrote it
Best looking automobile from the 50's bar none.
That car is stunning........
Thanks for sharing. This is as close as I will ever get.Dad had a ‘56 when I was a kid.
Wow! My dad had this exact same car when i was alittle kid! But i remember every inch of it! Awesome car!
The car of my dreams that I can only afford to dream about .
The backup lights seem to be blended in neatly with the tail lights on the second level. De Soto, RIP.
This was such a great car, and so comfortable.
What a beauty!
Nothing like a late 50's MoPar.
i had 57 desoto firesweep in 1967.318 V8 manual .... great cruiser still taste it
Mattuzo Olle dam should've kept it
And sooo much easier to maintain..the big multi carb engines are great eye candy but until you've had to keep one running for very long you can't appreciate a good ol' 318..
My dad had this exact car! Same color and all!
I have one exactly like this one in the back of my garage 🤠
Awesome sound
I was eleven years old when this car came out and thought it so kool that I bought a model of it.
Other than a 55,56 or 57 Chrysler 300, that is about the most beautiful car ever. Love that exhaust. When I was a kid, my uncle had a Dodge with a hemi, fast as hell.
Only a Mopar sounds like this....and perfectly styled fins made Chevy & Cadillac shake in their boots!
Wow, one beautiful automobile that is the finest Mopar I've ever seen and I've owned a few
Wow what an awesome! car you forgot the rearview mirror attached to the dash. I remember it well my Dad had one and a 1960 version with dual quad carbs. It could pass anything but a gas station
very nice looking car
beautiful car!
My first car was a 1957 Desoto Fireflight. Bought it in 1964 for $100!
Tail fins tastefully done.
Of all of the chryslers the desoto was the best looking of them all.
This is one really nice car.
sooo beautiful😍😍😍
This is my dream car - although an Adventurer is not necessary. A plain Fireflite 2-door hardtop would be fine. And since I'm just fantasizing, I'd want to see the range of available colors to select the 2-tone combination I'd like best.
Did anyone notice...the max on speedometer....160 mph.....what other american factory car ever put on their dash?
This was my first car, same color too. I wish I still had it.
I agree, it's a beauty....
This is my favorite Exner design next to the'58 Plymouth Belvedere.
MrBreeze and the fury
Thanks too much
Matt
Ohhh man. I want this car.
i like the buttons on the left side dash to change the gear of the transmission🏌🏌🏌🏌🏌🏌🏌🏌🏌👏🏌👏🏌👏🏌👏🏌👏🏌🏌👏👏🏌👏👏🏌👏🏌👏🏌🍻🍻🍻🍻👏🍻👏🍻👏🍻👏🍻👏🍻👏🏌
My dad , Ernest Johnson , of Louisville , Ky. owned two of these 1957 Desotos . One was a Firedome and one was a Fireflite . This was around 1960 . Cars as late as 62-64 could not touch dad's Desotos in a drag-race . They had 130 mph on the ( ribbon ) speedometer and would peg the ribbon . They were an excellent car !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ernest E. Johnson
what a car
man does this take me back.....oh I remember it so well. The faulty electrical system with the amp needle wagging like a dogs tail (see @1:38 notice amp gauge). That needle should not be kicking like that......
The erratic ammeter was normal. The electro-mechanical voltage regulators acted as primitive pulse chargers at low revs. It would settle down when actually driving.
It's not a Voltmeter .
Amazing to see top-of-the-line model with heater delete option! Imo, this car would look better with original golden hupcaps and correct widewhites instead of wire wheels. Also outside mirrors are non-mopar aftermarket type. Nice Adventurer, though.
Good calls. The mirror stands should angle forward. There are others around with the (probably Kelsey-Hayes) wires, so maybe they were an option. But of course the one-more-gold-thing gold wheel covers are the best.
Someone below noticed no heater stuff under the hood. I noticed no heater controls - they weren't integrated into the dash but were a chrome thing below it. And of course no AC, which would have been an excellent integrated unit. These are really big problems. I would want AC on anything, even if it had to be the modern retrofit ones like you see on Jay Leno for cars from before they had AC. They are integrated into the dashboard instead of a hang on unit. Probably for about $10K!
I had to go back to the video and view the under-the-hood portion to see the heater was left off. I'm always surprised when I see a car with the heater delete, unless it's a serous racer. I would NEVER have one, I want a car that's loaded to the gills. Ironically this car did have a factory radio. I had a 1957 Plymouth with factory heater and dealer-installed radio (no pushbuttons.) Then I had a 1960 Dodge with factory everything except power seat and A/C. The previous owner added the power seat and I added the A/C, which I took off a junked car with factory A/C. I also put in a new engine because the old one was kaput, and I found out (the resultingly easy way) I could not have installed the factory A/C without the engine being out of the car.
SUCH STYLE, COMPARE THIS TO ALL THE NEW CARS DESIGNED LIKE A SUPPOSITORY.
Gorgeous car! Exner Excellence! Very expensive now...somewhere between $100K and $250K.
While you don't have to be a genius to come up with ingenious car designs this one certainly possesses genius. Ditto Exner. The most sophisticated sense of studied carelessness ever. Oops, the steering wheel is square. Those DeSoto fins with the supernumerous space age lenses... Why not? Puts the doctrinaire form-follows-function people to shame!
looking at this car once more, I noticed it doesn't have a passenger heating system. There is a black plate covering up where the heater core and blower motor would have been.
I knew something looked odd to me when seeing that area under the hood. I’ve also come to notice there are no controls whatsoever for the heater/ventilation/fan hanging below the radio. No clock either to the right of the radio?
Damn, that's sweet.
I have a 48 Ford P U with a 330" Desoto and 4:71 GMC blower...Fun!
First American car to offer one horsepower per cubic inch as standard equipment. The 355 horse 354 in the '56 300 B was an option, not standard, as was the '57 Chevy fuelie, and the '57 Adventurer beat the 283-horsepower fuelie to the market, anyhow.
I had a 1957 Adventurer (black) in 1960's. Awesome car, but very prone to body rust. Accountants killed the Hemi in Desoto for 1958; did same in Chrysler 300 for 1959. Great shame great cars are expected to make a profit like run-of-mill wheels. Should be part of overhead.
I would take a 57 DeSoto over a 57 Chevy ANY day.
Then buy one!!!
Al Wheeler
I can't afford nothin'. I done gots to ride da bus.
Yes indeed.......
For sure, but we need to remember that the top of the line Chev Bel Air was at least a thousand dollars less than the upper end De Soto models. That doesn't sound like much today, but it was substantial in '57.
Yeah, it was about a $9,000 difference back then (taking inflation in account.)
I used to drive De Soto station wagon...
My god what a beauty
دوزتو 1957 هذه احلى سيارة يمكن ان تشاهدها في العالم
Fantastic car, fantastic video. Only one small criticism - when you have a guy in there starting the car up, a 1950s car, could you not kit him out in a 1950s suit? Not T shirt and shorts. 1950s cars need 1950s clothes.
years ago in my area, they had Edsels, and the people dressed up in tuxedos and ballroom dresses in that kind of stuff
Yes. Keep that bum away from the car..
I would have been glad to put a suit on just to drive this rare baby!
TruthOldSchoolStyle
I'm glad at least nobody has put 20" mag wheels on it yet..I'll be glad when the dumber is better wheel fad passes..
I'm sure if you bought that car you would have to go to a vintage clothing store for a whole new wardrobe.
As a general rule if they don’t put the price it means their asking to much. Not serious about selling it
hi man, how much?
waaaaaant one now
Beauuuuutiful Car!!
هذه هي السيارات الحقيقيه وليست كارتونات هذه الايام فيها رونق ومتانه وقوه
Is this car still on the market five years later?
looks like some accident damage on lower left hand rear corner
Bring LOTS of money!
NICE
Show Room New DeSoto.
0:27 I love cars with big booties! :D
---- joke aside, it's very sad cars aren't like this anymore, big, spacious, plush comfortable springy furry seats, now you get hard and stretched leather seats and the suspension is.. (ughh)
the last beauty was the 2004 cadillac.. :(
The new Chrysler 300's are pretty nice.I love this car but it's way out of my price range.
I....AM.....IMPRESSED!!! What's the reserve price?
The wood on the dash and door panels is nice, but not original. They should be cross hatched aluminum appearing.
4 miles per gallon! Yipee!! Sign me up!! $50 a day for gas. AWESOME!!
Tell us you can't afford it without telling us you can't afford it.
If I has restored this car, I would have added power windows.
i like those better than the 57 bel air and im a chevy man
Clock ?
Clocks were an extra cost option in these cars. This car did not have one.
Or a heater. Very weird for a top of the line car.
I bet someone is here from sam and max
+Noah B00m Hi.
no, thats the 1960 DeSoto.
I am
:O
Don’t like the autograph on the dash 🤮

Makes modern cars look like junk.
