Guess I'm simple-minded. My primary fire kit is in my pocket consisting of a Bic and a ferro rod. My Emergency/back-up fire kit is another Bic and ferro rod along with my burning lens and two fastfire cubes. Yes, I carry a tinder bag that may or may not have some bark and fat lighter in it. But what I need has always been found in the environment around me. If I take my flint & steel kit (and char) to the woods, it's just to play/practice with. I may source and carve a friction fire set while out, it's the same, just something play around with. I'm not toting 3 lbs of tinder sources around in my pack because I'm scared I won't be able to get a fire. What you need is already out there for normal fires. Take some form of man-made emergency quick-tinder and a couple of ignition sources for any "emergency" situations that require quick fire and be done with it.

Agreed.. my fire kit is extensive. From matches to flint and steel and everything in between. I use all. Keep in practice never know when your gonna be down to slapping a couple rocks together just for a spark

i remember going into bars that were smoky as a three alarm tire fire ( and yes i was well under legal age!!) hell the hospital here used to let you smoke in the visiting room up into the late 80's!!! we had a couple drive in style restaurants here that had a sign up that said the hell the law smoke if you want and if you don't like go somewhere else when they outlawed it!!!!
I too smoke a pipe and always have it with me in the woods. Call me crazy but I have been out in weather so cold none of my lighters wanted to burn (14 degrees not counting wind chill). Those UCO boat matches saved the day. A good fire kit has several options as you always say.
I know i normally have at least 5 Bics in my pack at any given time. So, on all the back ups to the back ups, i use the the little cover caps from Dutch Wear hammocks. The protect the button from being accidentally being depressed in your kit. Best part is, they are only about $1 each. They have them for the mini Bics as well.
Great advice. Upside to the Zippo, you can light it and set it down leaving your hands free to burn nylon, keep a fire to damp, stubborn to light tender. Is it my go-to? Nope, but I line them. Thanks for your videos, I learn something every time I watch one.
Mr Thomas, I agree with everything you said about the weaknesses of the Zippo. One thing I did was buy butane inserts for my Zippos and has made a world of difference. Some of the inserts are still flint fired and others are electronic. I also still carry Bic lighters and storm matches. Keep up the great videos and Thank you!!

ive started experimenting with what's called a "permanent match" it uses a small ferro rod and a striker, but on the striker is a bit of wick that holds the lighter fluid, and when not in use it has an O ring to seal i feel it is a good alternative to fluid lighters since it solves the evaporation and its waterproof.
I have butane lighters in my kits, for windy days, I have ferro rods and storm matches as well as strike anywhere matches. I make my own tinder from cotton rounds, squares and balls. Great video.
Blackie that one ain't all that much more expensive than a Zippo anymore!! i looked at a dressy Zippo the other day $38.99 and the plain ones are up to $24.99!!! on the bic lighters the full sized ones when they run dry you can pull the flint out of them and use them in a Zippo lighter! they'll last 2 to 3 times as long as purpose made Zippo flints!! personally i like those pocket torches they have for cigars they burn at least twice as hot as a bic or a Zippo but i always back it up with a flint strike lighter seeing how most of them are peizo lit!! with you talking about matches in the past you got me remembering the funeral home here they used to have double wide book matches and pocket first aid kits for the taking at the door!!! you got me thinking too and you can't find book matches in any store anymore and strike anywhere you have to look for 3 counties to fund any!!!
The bic you have in the waterproof case is in backwards. I carry a clipper lighter,flint n steel, and a ferro rod in every fire kit with vaseline soaked cotton balls. Great video.
They also make lighters that use the pezo crystal ignition that can be used to ignite charcloth and the crystal lasts longer than the flint in a regular lighter.
A Clipper lighter is the perfect combination of a Bic and Zippo. Like the Bic, it is a plastic butane lighter and you can see the fluid level through the transparent bottom. Like the Zippo, you can refill the Clipper lighter and replace the flint. Once you go Clipper, you will never go back to Bic.
I have a few of the Exotac Fire Sleeves, one for my pocket(EDC), one for each bag ,and one in the large ESSEE tin survival kit that I keep in my center console of my truck. One cool thing about the ESSEE tin is that it fits perfectly in the canteen cover that I use for belt carrying it if nothing else
When I was young, every cash registar had book matches for free. Almost every eatery had them on the tables and bars had them. What people forget is there were no Bic lighters, there was Cricket lighters. I use Zippos with refillable butane inserts. They are white, so you can see how much fuel you have. I think I use the torch one more often than the regular flame.

Great video! I wrap electrical tape around my zippo lid crack. The fluid won't evaporate and you can always use the tape to start a fire. I recently found a zippo that I taped up in the 90's, took the tape off and it lit right up. I was surprised.
What is a ferro rod and striker but a larger version of the flint and wheel that lives in both a disposable lighter and a zippo lighter? A dry disposable lighter with the hood removed works very well as an alternative to a ferro rod, particularly for a silver wolf who struggles using both hands, or anyone who is trying to hold something and to light it. If you have a Zippo lighter and want to carry it but want the reliability of a Bic, I highly recommend the Thunderbird line of Zippo compatible butane inserts made by Vector. I've got the TH-INSERT-G model that feels and looks exactly like the stock zippo insert but is sealed and doesn't leak, has a shutoff for the fuel when the door is closed and it's re-fillable. Best of all worlds and much better than the Zippo branded butane inserts you can find all over the place because it doesn't look or feel cheap and has a functional wind guard like the original Zippo inserts.

I carry several different methods, but a Bic lighter in an Exotac case is pretty much always on hand. It just speeds up the process. Also, long story short, I get a whole lot of free lighters, so I have a basket full of them to use.
I know zippo makes a butane refilable insert that you can order from them that you put in your zippo instead of the lighter fluid one. I dont remember the cost but seems like a better idea.
Hi Blackie, just a fyi to you and your good followers: if you do a search for Zorro insert for Zippo lighters, there is a company that makes an insert for zippo lighters with a wick cap, and oring seals, as well as a capped bottom that fits in standard and 3/4 size zippo lighters, or buy a full knock off in milled brass, copper, titanium, etc. Still uses regular Zippo fuel, flints, springs, etc. bur significantly seals off the tank body and makes evaporaton almost a non issue.
Nothing like the days if lighting a Marlboro and draggin the taste of that zippo fuel in! Of the good ole days! I like to keep the white round 25 cent sized, 1/4" thick fuel tabs in my fire kit. Not the larger mre ones, these are older. But they burn real hot, good flame for 9mins. Stack nice in a 35 mm film canister from the old days. Also, have you seen the orange and white smaller diameter para cord looking fire cord? I think I got it at Sportsman's Warehouse. Real cheap, plenty long. Wrap it around anything, starts fire and burns well.

I graduated as a history major in college and can confirm that America was founded on the tobacco industry. Tobaccos were even used as a "currency." In World War II there was the ubiquitous Ronson Lighter that was compared to the Sherman tank, because, once hit by the enemy, it would light up every time.
I've been meaning to get an Exotac lighter for a couple of years. I am a zippo guy but I don't even count that as fire kit. A lighter to look at is the old Ronson Whirlwind circa late 1940s, early 50s. It takes me 5 weeks to run out of fuel in that. A zippo lasts me a week. Yeah.. I'm a smoker. I guess I should fill a Whirlwind and light it every 3 or 4 days to see how long it lasts. I'm betting atleast 6 months. We shall see. For those that don't know they do have a windscreen. It's just hides then you slide it up if needed. A pretty nifty lighter.
A wide rubber band around the zippo between the top and bottom of the lighter. Exotec cover in flouresent clear. lights up with no light. Used in a tent at night to guide the way to ...................? Many possibilities. Great that it never needs "charging" to find it in the dark.
Modern methods are better to start fire, but in the end we all need to fully understand and be able to start fire with flint and steel or bow drill or and other method. We practice until we can't get it wrong. How many things have most of us learned with muscle memory and got rusty over the years or we're unable to remember how we did it becausr we did not keep muscle memory. Retirement don't mean we stop doing stuff. It just means we don't need to do it everyday anymore. We still need to horn our skills to keep them sharp. I have a butane lighter in everything. Draws cars trucks my boat tackle box tool boxes, but i also have other ways to start fire with those lighters. I use forever matches too. Candles ferro rods. I keep a pocket knife on me all the time except when I'm bathing or it's not far away. If we go away from home we have a means to survive. A knife container and fire starter are the 3 most important tools to have above anything and are the easiest to carry anywhere. Most of us today carry a water bottle of some kind. Make it stainless steel. I mostly carry coffe in mine, but water is everywhere i go too.
I was hoping you would talk about torch lighters. Is there a reason i dont see ppl put them in their fire kit? I bought a couple of nice ones, i thought it would be a good idea to have a powerful flame in the outdoors
They burn too much fuel, even if you only light them up sparingly. If you want to have a way to light almost any type of tinder, even in inclement conditions, just bring along some fire starters. They all work basically the same, but the best results I've had have been using dental cotton plugs, saturating them in paraffin oil, then dipping them in melted beeswax. They catch quick, and burn for a long time.
On my Zippo I have a 3 inch cross section of an old 10 speed tire tube. Solving 2 different problems: 1. Residing an old tire tube that already has a hole. 2. Keeps it sealed and slows the evaporation of the fluid. Just my experience and opinion hope it helps someone.
Keep the exotec. I can buy 40 bics for the same price. I recently blought an arch lighter that was a major waste of money. My advice is use a flame lighter if a lighter is what you want you use.
Never toss an empty Bic lighter if the flint is still good. Several demonstrations are shown on the "David West Channel" of making fire with an empty Bic with all kinds of tenders and char cloth and charred punk wood.
Did you take that disposable lighter put a little zip tie those plastic zip ties around underneath the where your thumb and you can keep it from going off when you don't want to use it you just put it away and it stays right you'll have it already just put some duct tape around it and hope to pray go somewhere you got and it works great
You get ducky little lighters at our local hardware store for 5 Rands (R5 - South African money; currently R21 to the dollar...) You don't thumb roll that horrible spiky metal thing - you just press down. Quite firmly so it doesn't ignite by accident. Great little lighters. They don't last long but at R5 who cares.
They never figured out how to waterproof the zippo? Also, wasn't there a butane insert or something for the zippo? The empty Bic can also be used to start a fire. Is that Bic lighter holder waterproof? There's a lighter that looks like a metal pill bottle that uses lighter fluid but I m not sure how reliable they are. Looks designed to hang on your keychain. There was something about a clipper lighter but I know nothing about it.
Go Vols…you sounded a little twisted to say it. Smokey will get you to light a fire or bite you depending on which one it was. The one retired early for biting. When ferro rods were new to the game, people used flint and steel due to the price and apprehension to new things. Even I had a side eye towards them until it was explained that the “flint” in lighters and torch strikers were mini ferro rods. Also, pick up those dead Bic lighters because the flint can be salvaged or used as a sparker for a long time after the fluid is gone. And the plastic body can be shaved to become tinder it you have nothing else.
As an ex smoker I would carry my Zippo in a leather pouch ( made for Zippos ) on my belt to stop the leaching chem burns . Along with their little refill tanks . Which were more for hand warmers . Love all the new stuff you showed .
Absolutely 100% agree with the Titanlight . I absolutely love it. Bought my wife one. When we got them we purposely over filled them, and screwed the bottom cap on, caught the excess fluid in a small jelly jar. When it finishes dripping, wipe it off, wipe your hands, either use it then or put the lid on it. Out in the field , TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN , unscrew the top cap and check for fliuid migration, and act accordingly. People keep just opening them, and fluid every where POOF and give the lighter bad reviews. For your own safety, remember folks lighter fluid BURNS😂

I like that the clipper is refillable and the flint is replaceable. Some people don't realize that and throw them away when they're empty.

I put a two inch wide clear tape around the zippo to keep it from drying out and clear nail polish on the extra flint to prevent corrosion.
I bought a Zippo brand insert that take butane so you still have the classic zippo look with the benefit of the fluid not evaporating. Great video!!!

I like to keep the white round 25 cent sized, 1/4" thick fuel tabs in my fire kit. Not the larger mre ones, these are older. But they burn real hot, good flame for 9mins. Stack nice in a 35 mm film canister from the old days. Also, have you seen the orange and white smaller diameter para cord looking fire cord? I think I got it at Sportsman's Warehouse. Real cheap, plenty long. Wrap it around anything, starts fire and burns well.

One advantage of a Zippo is that they are somewhat wind-proof. They used to be advertised as "wind-proof" .
Oh Yeah, I meant to add that zippo does have butane inserts too. Those don't evaporate. They have a torch and a yellow flame (more like a bic fire.)

In World War II there was the ubiquitous Ronson Lighter that was compared to the Sherman tank, because, once hit by the enemy, it would light up every time.
Empty pill bottle packed full with dryer lint is the tinder I carry.
I've been meaning to get an Exotac lighter for a couple of years. I am a zippo guy but I don't even count that as fire kit. A lighter to look at is the old Ronson Whirlwind circa late 1940s, early 50s. It takes me 5 weeks to run out of fuel in that. A zippo lasts me a week. Yeah.. I'm a smoker. I guess I should fill a Whirlwind and light it every 3 or 4 days to see how long it lasts. I'm betting atleast 6 months. We shall see. For those that don't know they do have a windscreen. It's just hides then you slide it up if needed. A pretty nifty lighter.

A wide rubber band around the zippo between the top and bottom of the lighter. Exotec cover in flouresent clear. lights up with no light. Used in a tent at night to guide the way to ...................? Many possibilities. Great that it never needs "charging" to find it in the dark.

Modern methods are better to start fire, but in the end we all need to fully understand and be able to start fire with flint and steel or bow drill or and other method. We practice until we can't get it wrong.
How many things have most of us learned with muscle memory and got rusty over the years or we're unable to remember how we did it becausr we did not keep muscle memory.
Retirement don't mean we stop doing stuff. It just means we don't need to do it everyday anymore. We still need to horn our skills to keep them sharp.
I have a butane lighter in everything. Draws cars trucks my boat tackle box tool boxes, but i also have other ways to start fire with those lighters. I use forever matches too. Candles ferro rods. I keep a pocket knife on me all the time except when I'm bathing or it's not far away.
If we go away from home we have a means to survive. A knife container and fire starter are the 3 most important tools to have above anything and are the easiest to carry anywhere. Most of us today carry a water bottle of some kind. Make it stainless steel. I mostly carry coffe in mine, but water is everywhere i go too.
I was hoping you would talk about torch lighters. Is there a reason i dont see ppl put them in their fire kit? I bought a couple of nice ones, i thought it would be a good idea to have a powerful flame in the outdoors
They burn too much fuel, even if you only light them up sparingly. If you want to have a way to light almost any type of tinder, even in inclement conditions, just bring along some fire starters.
They all work basically the same, but the best results I've had have been using dental cotton plugs, saturating them in paraffin oil, then dipping them in melted beeswax. They catch quick, and burn for a long time.

I carry multiple ways to make fire . I have been looking for a case for matches that I can carry 5 to 6 matches in . In my bikers or truckers wallet .
Tic tac boxes make AMAZING match holders. They dispense nicely too. You fasten the striker to the outside.
On my Zippo I have a 3 inch cross section of an old 10 speed tire tube. Solving 2 different problems: 1. Residing an old tire tube that already has a hole.
2. Keeps it sealed and slows the evaporation of the fluid.
Just my experience and opinion hope it helps someone.
Keep the exotec. I can buy 40 bics for the same price. I recently blought an arch lighter that was a major waste of money. My advice is use a flame lighter if a lighter is what you want you use.
Here in South Africa a nice flat lighter with a push down igniter can be bought for R5.
Never toss an empty Bic lighter if the flint is still good. Several demonstrations are shown on the "David West Channel" of making fire with an empty Bic with all kinds of tenders and char cloth and charred punk wood.
I’m a big fan of carrying a candle to save lighter fuel. I light the candle then use that to light my fire.
Did you take that disposable lighter put a little zip tie those plastic zip ties around underneath the where your thumb and you can keep it from going off when you don't want to use it you just put it away and it stays right you'll have it already just put some duct tape around it and hope to pray go somewhere you got and it works great

An $80 lighter? No thanks, I'll stick with a Bic. I started to carry the EZ Reach version in the winter to keep gloves away from flame.
You get ducky little lighters at our local hardware store for 5 Rands (R5 - South African money; currently R21 to the dollar...) You don't thumb roll that horrible spiky metal thing - you just press down. Quite firmly so it doesn't ignite by accident. Great little lighters. They don't last long but at R5 who cares.
They never figured out how to waterproof the zippo?
Also, wasn't there a butane insert or something for the zippo?

There's a lighter that looks like a metal pill bottle that uses lighter fluid but I m not sure how reliable they are. Looks designed to hang on your keychain.
There was something about a clipper lighter but I know nothing about it.

Go Vols…you sounded a little twisted to say it. Smokey will get you to light a fire or bite you depending on which one it was. The one retired early for biting.
When ferro rods were new to the game, people used flint and steel due to the price and apprehension to new things.
Even I had a side eye towards them until it was explained that the “flint” in lighters and torch strikers were mini ferro rods.
Also, pick up those dead Bic lighters because the flint can be salvaged or used as a sparker for a long time after the fluid is gone. And the plastic body can be shaved to become tinder it you have nothing else.
Can’t figure out if the guy in the thumbnail has a makeup kit or paint brush kit.

As an ex smoker I would carry my Zippo in a leather pouch ( made for Zippos ) on my belt to stop the leaching chem burns . Along with their little refill tanks . Which were more for hand warmers . Love all the new stuff you showed .

Absolutely 100% agree with the Titanlight . I absolutely love it. Bought my wife one. When we got them we purposely over filled them, and screwed the bottom cap on, caught the excess fluid in a small jelly jar. When it finishes dripping, wipe it off, wipe your hands, either use it then or put the lid on it. Out in the field , TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN , unscrew the top cap and check for fliuid migration, and act accordingly. People keep just opening them, and fluid every where POOF and give the lighter bad reviews. For your own safety, remember folks lighter fluid BURNS😂
